Peggy Noonan responds to open-mic story

From NBC's Mark Murray
In the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan writes of the open-mic story that's spreading like a wildfire through the blogosphere. "When the segment was over and MSNBC was in commercial, [Chuck] Todd, [Mike] Murphy and I continued our conversation, talking about the Palin choice overall. We were speaking informally, with some passion -- and into live mics. An audio tape of that conversation was sent, how or by whom I don't know, onto the internet. And within three hours I was receiving it from friends far and wide, asking me why I thought the McCain campaign is 'over,' as it says in the transcript of the conversation. Here I must plead some confusion. In our off-air conversation, I got on the subject of the leaders of the Republican party assuming, now, that whatever the base of the Republican party thinks is what America thinks."

"I made the case that this is no longer true, that party leaders seem to me stuck in the assumptions of 1988 and 1994, the assumptions that reigned when they were young and coming up. 'The first lesson they learned is the one they remember,' I said to Todd -- and I'm pretty certain that is a direct quote. But, I argued, that's over, those assumptions are yesterday, the party can no longer assume that its base is utterly in line with the thinking of the American people. And when I said, 'It's over!' -- and I said it more than once -- that is what I was referring to. I am pretty certain that is exactly what Todd and Murphy understood I was referring to. In the truncated version of the conversation, on the Web, it appears I am saying the McCain campaign is over. I did not say it, and do not think it. In fact, at an on-the-record press symposium on the campaign on Monday, when all of those on the panel were pressed to predict who would win, I said that I didn't know, but that we just might find 'This IS a country for old men.' That is, McCain may well win. I do not think the campaign is over, I do not think this is settled, and did not suggest, back to the Todd-Murphy conversation, that 'It's over.'"

Noonan's recollection matches Todd's on the context of the conversation.

Methinks thou dost protest too much, Peggy.

I know what I heard and the tone in which you said it. I wish you had the guts to stand by your words, because they are spot on.  It is over for the Republicans in 2008.
MSNBC sure got that up on Youtube in a hurry. Staffers must have been pretty excited about their find. At least Fox sat on Jesse Jackson's story for a week making sure it was accurate, correct, and in context, before putting some of it out there. Doesn't seem to be much of a vetting process at msnbc.
Ummm...OK.  Is Mike going to refute this too, then?

Just when I had such high hopes that y'all were being honest with us...so sad.
Whichever way... you were right.

The Republicans can't rely on the same smear tactics from those elections and this election is over.

nice try, but it is not going to work. Peggy clearly said she was not qualified and said it was poltical bs. Murphy agreed and said it was a polticial gimmick. can't spin this when it is on tape. Stick with your comments Peggy because you, murphy and todd are correct about palin. she is a poltical gimmick and unqualified.
Careful around those MSNBC mics Peggy. Keith is listening to everything you say and is just waiting to take it completly out of context.
No one ever actually believes that the spindoctors actually believe what they say on TV, anyway.
This is why I never never watch or go on msnbc, I made the mistake tonight and that goodness I learned my lesson, You have a bunch of losers working for you and I dont need there opinions
Why is it so difficult for politicians and pundits to tell the truth?
Trying to back peddle and clean up a mistake - done like a true republican!
Sounds like spin control... In Texas we have a term to decribe this..."are you going to belive your lying ears ?" ...try again... Are we going to hear the same story from Chuck Todd ? Why did he not cosign this press release ...
Sure that's what you meant...

The woman made a rational observation! McCain made an unexplainably stupid pick and quite a few people are refusing to eat their turd sandwich and call it cheesburger.
Yeah, Peggy, you just keep telling yourself that.  I think the orderlies will be around shortly with your meds.
I Think you are the first HONEST Republican Strategist. The open mick just confirmed my feeling.
You are the only one that is not stuck on the talking points you honestly answer the questions with and without the points
I'm a democrat who has enjoyed you.
Hope this doesn't change your ability to be on Hardball ect.
GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE
Caught Ya! lol

Old hawaiian saying , always speak the truth, its easier to keep track of !   GO OBAMA/BIDEN
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
I am a very liberal Democrat, but I really like and respect Peggy Noonan and think she adds an honest view from her side of the aisle. She was very insightful through the primaries and I appreciated her opinion, and wrote her once to tell her so. Though I don't agree with her on things political, I'll give her a pass here, but I do have to say that I really enjoyed hearing that full throated expletive coming out of her mouth!

PS Mike Murphy is an honest guy too, no worries. But Mike, don't lose your edge, that's what the TV audience loves about you!
Huh?
Peggy
Nice try!
Damage control
Nice try.
..... yeah ... sure .. this statement is just as believable as what you said (and continue to say) when you KNOW the mic is on ... its ashame your not secure (mature?) enough to have the conviction of your words ...
I don't believe your explanation, Peggy.  You are lying to protect yourself.

It's the usual CYA!
"Noonan's recollection matches Todd's on the context of the conversation."

Wow. Not surprising that Noonan and Todd would cover for each other.  After all, "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" has been the mantra of the media elite in Washington (and I'm speaking of Noonan, Todd and Murphy here) for years now.  God forbid any reporter should do any actual REPORTING OF THE NEWS, when "insightful" commentary from a bunch of overpaid idiots is so much more "interesting."

"Ooops...watch out for the open mike or the truth might actually come out and we all know the American People aren't ready for THAT!" he said, insightfully.
My compliments, to my knowledge, one of the few Republicans that is ethical enough to tell the truth.

If we are lucky, the Rove Clones won;t pay attention to waht she said. It is true that so far, over half of the RNC TV viewers are over 55.
It is over.  Just follow Palin's history..is a high risk choice and long term will not work!!
Either way she's right. It's over. The Republicans are so out of touch with mainstream America they may as well be aliens from another galaxy. They are preaching the same old things they always have.

I can hear even conservative families around the table saying:"Sure I believe in right to life, but it would be nice to have health insurance to pay for the new baby, and gas money to drive from the hospital, and after all that I hope I still have a job and a house to bring the new baby home to!!!"

Having a right to life for my new baby means nothing if the rights we already have are being trampled on > I'm not even going to watch Palin or McCain speak. I don't want to be counted with the Nielsen ratings. I won't even dignify him and the Republicans with that.
Thanks for clearing that up for us..
Yup, Yup
I think everyone should stop trying to be so politically correct and please who ever they are sitting by. Just be straight and say what you really think. That way it doesn't matter if the mic is on or off. You are good at the job you do. Don't apologize to anyone. Tell it like it is. That's why we listen to you. It is Honest! I wish Chuck Todd would run for President. I'd vote for him today!
Yeah right! wink, wink.
Smooth backpeddling Peggy!
Good try Noonan...but face it you got caught.  Dont try and change it.
Noonan is disgusting and so is Andrea Mitchell. Can someone fire these people. I thought a reporter's job was to be fair not bias!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are disgusting. Both of them. Fire their ass!
Despite the protestations,
it's over....just admit it.
Is Palin going for the Betty Crocker award, or the VP of the US
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrG8w4bb3kg

This posting is somewhat different from the one above why is that?
I have watched her speak, and Paulin still hasn't told us why she is qualified. So she gave herself a pay cut and stood up to a "fat cat"  no details, not convinced. Having a disabled child isn't good enough to make me like you sara.  obama biden has this independant vote
It seems sad that everything has to be spun. Both commentators obviously felt that Palin's selection was a very bad choice.

What both recognize is that McCain did not choose the person who he felt would make the best president should something happen to him. He picked a person that he thought could help steal Hillary Clinton's supporters.

Doing that is indeed cynical
Although this may refute the "it's over", this in no way detracts from the point brought up by Chucky T that there were many "qualified" republican women that McCain could have chosen, ones that may have been more accepted by moderate Americans. The point that is so abundantly clear is that McCain is gambling, not just with his ticket, but with American's future. I just wish that we could hear more honest talk from the political analysts.

Obama/Biden '08
Mark,
Go back a watch/listen to the comments again.  Slound to me like Mr. Todd is covering for Murph and Noonan whose tails got caught in the perverbial wringer of an open mic.  Obviously no Republican of any standing is going say anything negative, on record, about McCain's pick.
What she doesn't deny, however, is that Palin is a poor choice -- so clearly she still considers this choice, excuse me, bull@#%t!  Nor does she recant relying on these compelling narratives/life stories work or are effective.  I like the clarification. Noonan has not recanted she considers the woman a strategic mistake for the GOP.
Nice try!
Don't worry Peggy, we agree with you - total bulls*I!
This sounds terribly convoluted. Doesn't saying the base is no longer in line with the American people the same thing as saying the campaign is over? Especially since the Palin choice was so obviously an attempt to pander to the base.I think Peggy Noonan should have given herself more time to think of a better way out of this mess.
LOL

Would you like a shoe horn to get your foot out of your mouth?
Your bias is obvious, your news service is now just a outlet for the democrats. Your comments prove this. If you had any ethical standards you would resign or admit your political leanings.
Yeah right! and the sun revolves around the earth. Ok, please explain Ms Noonan, what you meant by "bulls@#**"?  We know it aint over till its over.. But you did good.
Peggy is for Palin, after she was against her and got caught lying about being for her.  Hahahaha!
Okay Peggy...Take it on the chin, suck it up, and move on.  These things happen -- and given the pace of this campaign, the new hot story will pop up later today.  And, after all, you were just honest.
