Peggy Noonan responds to open-mic story

From NBC's Mark Murray
In the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan writes of the open-mic story that's spreading like a wildfire through the blogosphere. "When the segment was over and MSNBC was in commercial, [Chuck] Todd, [Mike] Murphy and I continued our conversation, talking about the Palin choice overall. We were speaking informally, with some passion -- and into live mics. An audio tape of that conversation was sent, how or by whom I don't know, onto the internet. And within three hours I was receiving it from friends far and wide, asking me why I thought the McCain campaign is 'over,' as it says in the transcript of the conversation. Here I must plead some confusion. In our off-air conversation, I got on the subject of the leaders of the Republican party assuming, now, that whatever the base of the Republican party thinks is what America thinks."

"I made the case that this is no longer true, that party leaders seem to me stuck in the assumptions of 1988 and 1994, the assumptions that reigned when they were young and coming up. 'The first lesson they learned is the one they remember,' I said to Todd -- and I'm pretty certain that is a direct quote. But, I argued, that's over, those assumptions are yesterday, the party can no longer assume that its base is utterly in line with the thinking of the American people. And when I said, 'It's over!' -- and I said it more than once -- that is what I was referring to. I am pretty certain that is exactly what Todd and Murphy understood I was referring to. In the truncated version of the conversation, on the Web, it appears I am saying the McCain campaign is over. I did not say it, and do not think it. In fact, at an on-the-record press symposium on the campaign on Monday, when all of those on the panel were pressed to predict who would win, I said that I didn't know, but that we just might find 'This IS a country for old men.' That is, McCain may well win. I do not think the campaign is over, I do not think this is settled, and did not suggest, back to the Todd-Murphy conversation, that 'It's over.'"

Noonan's recollection matches Todd's on the context of the conversation.

"Your bias is obvious, your news service is now just a outlet for the democrats. Your comments prove this. If you had any ethical standards you would resign or admit your political leanings."
Yes Peggy you have been caught red handed you should resign!
As a result of this and the way NBC treats its conservative folks, I suggest that conservatives refuse to appear on MSNBC.  At the end of the day, if you read the comments and blogs, it looks like the liberals are all talking to each other as usual.  They know the truth and don't need any other "facts".
The Palin move was strictly to pander to the base.  The likes of Limbaugh, Hannity etc were immediately supporting the pick.  Someone like Tom Ridge would dwarf her qualifications.  I could imagine the Republicans who do not look at candidates with rose colored glasses would say the same thing privately.  Too bad Noonan is backing away from it.  Palin has to have her A game on for the next 60 days and become expert at all the trivial issues of the campaign and avoid any gaffes.  That is difficult for even the most seasoned candidate.
Peggy  - don't apologize - just admit that McCain picked a schrill and mocking VP - who is going to turn off more voters than she is going to appeal to (leaving just the hard core right wing nut jobs on her side)
Very funny. Reminds me of ignoring the elephant in room. It's not there I'm telling you! As she trips over it.
I WAS A RABID REPUBLICAN!!!!  As far as I'm concerned ... IT'S OVER!!!! for 08/12!!!  Peggy: Trust your woman's intuition, I think and feel it's right on... IT's OVER FOR THE REPUBLICANS!!!

OBAMA/BIDEN 08/12
What was said on that open mic revealed exactly what most of this country knew on Tuesday:  The McSame-Palin campaign is over.  Peggy can try to back-pedal on this, but she said it.  She meant it.  She's here to represent it. Anyone who believes her "excuse" for that deserves the rid1cule that they get.
Let's accept Ms. Noonan at her word. The most interesting part of the quote is  "I said that I didn't know, but that we just might find 'This IS a country for old men."

TAke a look at the party convention demographics and that would have to be amended to white, old men.
Republicans are presenting a convention that is almost entirely white. Only 36 of the 2,380 delegates seated on the convention floor are black, the lowest number since the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies began tracking diversity at political conventions 40 years ago. Each night, the overwhelmingly white audience watches a series of white politicians step to the lectern — a visual reminder that no black Republican has served as a governor, U.S. senator or U.S. House member in the past six years.
Republicans have only one African American — Steele — scheduled to speak during prime time at their convention. The united, diverse coalition that Republicans once envisioned instead looks uniform.
The Republican party has been very good at getting the American people for voting against their own self interest.  Maybe this election will be different.  Yea, RIGHT!
Anyone who thinks this race is over is just being extremely naive.  One must remember that the Republicans view this political race more than any other as if they were the last 2 football teams left standing readying for the Superbowl. For them, it is not about who has the best ideas or concerns about the country as a whole, it is all about Winning.  So, please do not count these highly competitive, ends-justifies-the-means people.  No way are they down and out by a long shot!

P.
Hey Peggy, you are like Palin, for and maybe against.
Like the bridge to no where.
I wish you had had the nerve to speak your own
true feelings to your viewers.
Many, many of us feel she was a dangerous pick,
risking the future of our country. Why don't
you have the courage to state the facts??
