First thoughts: A new hope

ST. PAUL, MN -- Last night’s speech by Palin made one thing very clear: Conservatives have found their Obama. Win or lose, Palin has already established herself as the future star of the party. She stayed within her comfort zone, avoiding issues she's not up-to-speed on just yet. The only question is whether her tough sarcastic words for Obama played well with swing voters, who were hearing her for the very first time. Republican strategists believe she did; Dems, on the other hand, thought she was a bit too hot with her rhetoric. By the way, it was interesting how one of the strategies with the speech was to pick a fight with Obama. The McCain folks are hoping Obama joins the scrum. He didn't take the bait, but his campaign released this statement: "The speech that Gov. Palin was well delivered, but it was written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years. If Governor Palin and John McCain want to define 'change' as voting with George Bush 90% of the time, that's their choice, but we don't think the American people are ready to take a 10% chance on change." Of course, for a campaign whose candidate was launched by speeches, is it smart to actually mock another person’s speech?

*** Palin’s challenges: But as a few newspapers remind us today, Palin’s speech last night was the easy part. Over the next nine weeks, she will have to survive the Troopergate story that could undercut her reform credentials (the Washington Post has some new emails from Palin on the matter); answer questions on specific policy matters to prove that she’s capable of being one heartbeat away from the presidency; and demonstrate that she and McCain have good chemistry. Remember that McCain had met Palin just once before the day he picked her. Can they overcome that to prove to voters that they’re a better team than Obama-Biden?

*** Now it’s McCain’s turn: Last week, Obama was able to soar over the previous speeches by Michelle Obama, Ted Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, and Bill Clinton. By the time we got to Invesco Field, you knew this was Obama’s party. Can McCain do the same thing after Palin speech last night? She made the Arizona senator’s job easier  (she fired up the troops) and harder (can McCain ever win over the hearts of the base?). The good news for McCain is that last night had enough Obama contrast that they don't need to do that with McCain’s remarks tonight. Don't be surprised if the McCain speech is more about himself as a reforming change agent, rather than a speech filled with barbs at Obama. McCain's not known for his great speechmaking. But his chief speechwriter, Mark Salter, is someone who has a great sense of history, so no doubt this will read well for the books. Now, it's up to McCain to perform.

VOTE: Can McCain's speech top Palin's convention performance?

*** Red-meat night: Last night was a red-meat night, and an effective one -- much better for the GOP than Tuesday was. As for the sideshow of the evening, the unofficial 2012-16 primary, Huckabee seemed to top Romney on the speech front, but it may not matter since Palin seemed to trump them both. In fact, as we stated above, the GOP response to Palin reminds us a bit of how Democrats reacted to Obama in 2004. Then again, Obama's '04 speech was quintessential Obama (talking about uniting the country, a new hope, and a better tomorrow). What did last night’s speech tell us about Palin beyond her family and her attacks on Obama? That said, her appeal to be a fighter for families of special needs could really help with attracting those voters to cross party lines.

*** The Democratic response: Obama strategist Robert Gibbs and DNC adviser Jamal Simmons hold a conference call with reporters at 9:30 am ET.

*** On the trail: Obama is in Pennsylvania, stumping in York and Lancaster. Biden campaigns in Virginia, hitting Virginia Beach and Manassas before heading to fundraisers in DC. And Michelle Obama is in New Mexico.

I couldn't tell if that was a Comedy Central Roast of Barack Obama, or a Student Council Election speech. Well written and well delivered, I guess, but light on details about how they are going to fix Bush's mess. But given her tone, I think Joe Biden can plan on being as strong as he needs to be in the debate.

Keep in mind, also, that so far, everything we've seen from her has been scripted and controlled. When will we get to see her on MTP or some other venue where a reporter can ask her questions and we get to see her have to think on her feet? I'm sure they'll delay that as long as possible.
The republicans don't want to find their "Obama" as Obama is all talk of hope and change and no substance.  We found someone who can actually create change and bring hope to the American people. Not just talk about it.
It seems like the media elite and the Bush GOP are fired up about this woman but I think she was presumptive and arrogant. Actually for the first time I think I know how Republicans feel about Obama because she struck me as an upstart with no record who is acting out of opportunism and partisanship. The big difference is Obama does so out of concern for the American people and his desire to lift America out of the Bush years. Palin wants to continue the Bush policies while crafting a good comedy routine fit for Rush Limbaugh and basically being a yes-woman for McCain. This is a battle for the heart and soul of America and the GOP are trying to play on the cynicism, pessimism, and fear of voters....again! It's the same Rove playbook wrapped in a different package and it's a shame the mass media is too devoid to have a little more honesty in their remarks. Luckily Obama has the tools to speak above McCain/Palin and directly to voters.

But make no mistake it is the task of Democrats to discredit Palin and not allow her persona to obscure her record. Also they can't allow McCain to basically hide behind his VP. And one last note...I think Biden/Obama should definitly point out the elitism that McCain and Palin represent. She belittled community service and the efforts of people who support Obama. How arrogant to exaggerate your record and wisdom when it doesn't stack to either Obama or Biden. How arrogant to outright LIE about your record and your opponents positions on national TV for the sake of scoring political points. How arrogant to smirk at the very same congress(who overthrew GOP rule) who's help you will possibly need if something happens to McCain. How arrogant to perform a national comedy routine fit for talk radio but yet ignore the economic plight Americans face on a daily basis. How arrogant is it to mock your opponent when you seek to represent the last eight years of Republican dominance in Washington. The very same GOP she talks about going against are the very same people she will empower if McCain becomes president. It's absurd that the same party that broke Washington now says they can fix it. Democrats must put this in perspective for voters....especially Reagan Democrats that have often rejected hope and resonated with 'Culture wars' of the GOP. It's time for the new 'silent majority' that is against these wars, incompetence, and Bush/Rove Republicanism to say ENOUGH!
Gonna call Palin on her lies?  She slashed funding for special needs kids, slashed funding for a home for teenage unwed mothers, was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it, didn't seem to know about all of the legislation that Obama has introduced, etc.  C'mon, guys, do some reporting on this!
Sorry.  "She stayed w/in her comfort zone?"   YOu mean she can read a speech real well?  She makes a terrific mouthpiece for Karl Rove.  McCain is Rove's puppet now that Rove protege Steve Schmidt is running McCain's campaign.   Now Palin is simply mouthing Rovian talking points.
As demonstrated by John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin to be his Vice President and by her acceptance speech, the radical evangelical right wing of the Republican party has shown that they have succeeded where the North Vietnamese failed: they have broken John McCain’s “maverick” spirit and captured his soul.  McCain’s pretense of still being an outsider and  “maverick” is nothing more than the self delusions of an old man who is reduced to being a  mere shadow of his former self. McCain clearly shows that he intends to win the election by avoiding issues and continuing the divisive partisan politics of Carl Rove and George Bush that he once eschewed. He and Palin now take a ticket into the election that is clearly more extreme and ideologically tied to the radical conservative right than was Bush-Cheney. Personal ambition has trumped his love of country.  What a shame for someone with such a distinguished past to end his career and perhaps life on this note.
The bottom line here: just as the GOP found a star right-winger in 2000 in GW, they have found a female version of GW for the future.  No doubt, she has fired up the base.  The problem I see is she offered no solutions for the average middle class family who is struggling to pay their mortgage, provide health care and buy groceries right now.  I think 8 years of Bush has been enough for Americans and Obama-Biden will be in office until 2016.  But Ms. Palin is no going anywhere, she will be back
I think it's funny that this trooper story is getting all of the attention when she is lying about her bridge to nowhere support, lying about her earmarks, has not answered a single question about foreign policy, the economy, anything. Another example of our glorious 4th estate at work.
YES HE CAN!
This was revolting. The lies, childish insults, the way they exploited that poor disabled baby. This makes me truly ashamed to be an American.
Glad to see the Republicans finally have something to cheer about.  When you continue to tell us how excited you are about your nominee over and over again, it makes me think that maybe you're trying to sell something you don't even believe. Don't think it(the speech) will make a difference with Dems or independents though.
Sarah Palain delivered a stunning speech that has the electrified and rarified this election.  But we didn't know he so she needed to be brilliant.

We all know Jon McCain is a bona fide hero.  He is free to be himself.  Humble, compassionate, wise, statesmanlike...ready to lead on day one.

Sara Palin..you have "got" to be kidding me ! This is a joke, isn't it ?
How do you know she's not up to speed on issues?
Sarah Palin "A breath of fresh air" !!!!  What a pleasant change from the cardboard paste up Obama.
Please note as no other person has, Palin was a profesional broadcaster. She did the weather and sports after she got her degree in journalism. The very same profession she railed against last night. Hence, she already had a confront level with the camera. The great communicator Ronald Reagan taught us you can tell the American public anything but if you do it with a smile and a wink you win their hearts but let's hope this time not their vote.
The Rog
What did Palin's speech tell us beyond her family and her attack on Obama?  It tells us that she is a tough woman who's amassed an astonishing list of accomplishments in a very short time as the governor of an important, energy rich state.  If I were a Democrat I would be thoroughly embarrassed comparing Obama's lack of legislative record to what Palin has done.  (And no, attaching your name to some bills that someone else has written doesn't constitute legislative achievement.)
My only question is this: What about a Obama/Palin ticket?  It covers all aspects of the "change" that they all proclaim and we get the balance of true government we really need with a little of a reality show appeal to swing voters.
I wondered if I would live to see a female President of the United States.  I have seen her and heard her speak, now we just need to get her elected Vice President and start her toward the presidency.  Working people will see people they know in her.  I see myself in her.
I am bothered by the fact that a VP nominee would praise her own experience of fiscal responsibility being a mayor and governor for a State that has consistently taken more tax dollars than any other in the union per capita.  She has done a great job passing out my hard earned tax dollars to her fellow Alaskan folks.  As mayor she passed money to her 6000 citizens that she secured by paying lawyers to go to Washington and collect.  How is this in any way representative of person who understands fiscal responsibility?  I don’t really care if she has a 17 year old daughter that is pregnant.   I don’t really care that she sought revenge on her brother in-law through a messy divorce.  What I do care about is real issues.  Let’s really look at Alaska’s history with spending federal dollars.  Let’s look at the real reasons she fought so hard against these oil companies.  To me her fight seems very similar to Chavez and Putin’s most recent attempts to socialize there natural resources by kicking out oil companies so she can than divvy up the money amongst Alaskan’s.  These actions would be very consistent with a person who has supported Alaska’s succession from the union and whose husband was a member of the succession party.  I am Texan and I understand being from a State that has many resources and boost at times that we think we are a country.  The only difference is  we know we are not a country and here in Texas our presidential and vice presidential candidates the bushes and LBJ never pushed for socialism of Texas resources and succession from the Union, neither did their spouses.  I hope the media can start asking some real questions of this new candidate and get away from the lame pregnant daughter and trooperhate thing.  Do your job and start asking this candidate real questions.

Overall, per-capita federal spending among states was highest in Alaska, which took in more than $12,200 per person, followed by Virginia, Maryland, New Mexico and North Dakota. Nevada ranked last with more than $5,000 in per-capita federal aid. Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Indiana rounded out the bottom five.

This is a real biased report.  Stop trying to sway the American voters into the direction you want them to go. This report is a joke.
The only discrimination that I've seen exhibited by McCain-Palin is for "special-needs children" and possibly our American troops.  What about Obama??  Please do not forget Obama's church video!!!
If people hate America, why don't they leave instead of "sucking the life out of the hard-working Americans who love this country" and believe in working for what you get?  As a hard working R.N., I am so tired of supporting the lazy people of this country who know how to beat the system and get everything free.  I would have loved for my son to have gotten a "free" education instead of spending the $50,000 that I am still paying back.  Why doesn't someone take on an "Anti-Welfare Reform" platform.
I hardly think she is a new "hope". She spoke nothing about her vision for America and how people can come together in this country and STOP being divisive. All her language was very demeaning and spiteful. Like OBAMA said ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!
NO McSHAME IN 08
Palin and her husband were wearing Alaska Flag pins rather than American Flag pins.  Does this mean that Alaska is first rather than America?
Governor Palin put the Dems on the defensive. It's turn around time. Glad to hear someone is going to Washington for the country, not the approval of the elite.
I see the Dems are out in force here. Obviously there is a strange new feeling in the Dem camp. FEAR, now the Dems will have to show there hand of change and produce some background as to how they are going to do it. Biden came out and said that Palins family is off limits to attack, good call Joe, it was a sure loser tactic for you. The Rep VP pick has outmatched the Dem nominee, she IS the average American he talks about, family, job, bills to pay. Yes, the Rep ticket gets it. VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN. Join the winning team.
Yeh But the difference between her and Obama, she actually has something truthful to say, he's full of it. Mr. Hollywood!!!
Republican Party,Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton and for to degrade Obama the way she did after he stood up for her family is disgraceful. Obama is a Harvard Law Graduate and chose to help less fortunate people as a community organizer. How can you even poke fun at this. What were you doing? Miss. Wasilla beauty pageant and a sports reporter. Give me a break.
Go Sarah!  We love you and will vote for you.
In reading the comments, it sounds as though she will slam the dems well. Everyone was knocking her on something, with no clue as to Palins' character and abilities. THE ONLY QUESTION REALLY IS, WILL SHE BE PRESIDENT IN 5 YEARS.
It's amazing you liberals smash a person for doing exactly what you've wanted government to do. That and you bash Palin's daughter for being pregnant while you let fags marry, adopt and run wild in the streets.
Just like the Republicians she's all talk and attacks. She constantly Obama and points the finger at him and the Democratic party but what points does she get to about resolving the economy or sending our troops back home? McCain has done a job with this woman who shows up at the convention, gives her speech, and then comes out on stage with her infant son as if her being a mother and wife will help people better decide who to vote for but it's not going to work. She governs a state (Alaska) that's 95% owned by the U.S. government and Obama helps run one of the most populated states in the country. Not comparing the two candidates but do you want another 4 years of fail promises and decitfulness by voting a Republican in? I don't think so so before you vote you all should really do your research on these candidates because like "Yahoo News" said this morning, "Palin and the RNC said a lot of facts that were untrue". Just think about it. Bush is a republican and see how he helped changed our country for the good. See how he's put us in trillions of dollars in debt. She how he started a war in Iraq over oil oppose to one in Afganistan where the terrorist of September 11th came from. See how he did absolutely nothing for 5+ days for the Hurricane Katrina victims. All I ask is think of how you felt about the direction of the country over the past 8 years and then look at the party who's been heading the country for the past 8 years. Bush promised changes 4 years ago and looks like he made good on those promises but the changes weren't good for America and its citizens. Reasearh, Related, Realize, and Vote.
I loved her. She is a great orator, her image and family vlues resonate with me.  She appeals to people outside the urban beltways that view things a little differently than those from rural and smalltown America.  These populations are facing different issues and challenges. Sarah Pallin is someone who can give a voice to the quiet America, undergoing quiet challenges and adversity that don't get all the media attention.
I was a HILLARY supporter, on the fence about Obama this whole past year. LAst night my choice was made. Obama/Biden '08!! Palin is frightening , almost stepford wifelike, angry, beady eyed, nasty, not an ounce of anything you could trust exuded from her, no warmth, no anything. .Mccain tried to hug her and she sort of tapped his shoulders and coiled away. no chemistry. She scared me to death.
If Palin hit it out of the park, how large was the park? I missed the great speech!  Palin is a  pedestrian speaker at best!  Palin voice was grating and the speech offered not solutions to improve the quality of life for working people.  Sarah Palin proved yesterday that she is quite comfortable lying to the American people about her record. She proved that she can  lie with a straight face. Palin cut special needs budget by 60%.   Once again, she used her children as props!
Stephen,Dallas

Her accomplishments and attacks are based on lies and corrupt practices.
It is amazing at the hypocrisy of dems every little bit of attacks on palin can be the exact same attack on obama. they talk about experience, palin and obama equal zero they talk about same old politics biden has been a senator longer than mccain. please liberals look a little farther than your nose.
If I were a Democrat I would be thoroughly embarrassed comparing Obama's lack of legislative record to what Palin has done.  (And no, attaching your name to some bills that someone else has written doesn't constitute legislative achievement.)

*****

If I was you I would pick up your check from the repubs before people really look too closely at Palin and realize what a crock this is.  Ever notice how 90% of the repubs stroking themselves come from the south? Hmmm...wonder why?
To Nancy from Richmond:

All I can say is God bless you!  You hit the proverbial nail right on the head.  We have been life long Republicans and you expressed very eloquently the same feelings we have about the GOP.
All of you democrats are just jealous! Look at you....you talk about how Sarah Palin was lashing out on Obama and being nasty?!? Take a good hard look at yourselves! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?! Sarah Palin was speaking Truth. Obama lied, she called him out. Obama has no experience, she called him out. She only stated what was true and what people have been thinking but were too afraid to say.
Sarah Palin is exactly what this country needs. She has spunk and isn't afraid to say the TRUTH!
Can the Republican's get real!!! The Nation is not that stupid. Why should we believe anything they say, according to their record we are real bad shape!  Oh, I forgot they have no idea what everyday Americans go through. Having Sarah Palin as his running mate is just more smoke and mirrors to get the public to over look what is really real. Our nation is in trouble no thanks to their politics!!! Sarah is lovely, but so are flowers, cute puppies, and babies.  Nice to look at but take alot of work to take care of!!!!
Our country and the world need to be healed from the devastation of US led wars of the last eight years and we have finally found our collective "soul". We thus feel elevated to the place our forefathers sought for all Americans; that is the place where the individual is respectfully allowed to feel good about freedom and his country. We have achieved that in this election to the delight of ourselves and the world which is waiting for the diplomatic climate change necessary to pursue peace and prosperity. Make no doubt that we are strong enough to give peace a chance.

And the nature of peace is quiet and calm.

The choice is simple.

Obama
Boy oh boy such vitriol!! Very few of us are in the middle anymore and we see only one side of the equation. We are so eager to attack..what an angry group of people we have become. Please remember that whomever wins will have nearly 50% fo the people voting for the other person. Somehow we need to work together and realize that both canidates want a better America. Their approaches may be different but there goal is the same. Neither candidate can be as bad as represented in all these hateful emails. Can't we agree to disagree in a respectful manner? I am hoping and praying that we can. God Bless America.
She did great - you all know it - and now your scared to death of her. Mainly because she is going to get JM elected. Can't wait for November - football, turkey, and no more BAMA !
As usual, the media is one sided, spins the stories to the liberal liking and posts all negative comments regarding the Republicans. Not surprised one bit that you have not posted any comments from the Republicans view point
Please, keep attacking Sarah.  Please, I beg you.  For America loves an underdog and I think when it is all said and done, America will love Sarah!  The more the media and democrats attack Sarah, the better she is looking.  Funny thing is that all the attacks have been of a personal nature and against her family.  Attack her policies, not the person or family.  Finally, when did the media become America's vetting machine as suggested last night by a Washington Post writer? When did a candidate have to get approval from the media to select a running mate.  Wrong answer.  Go Sarah!
With the democratic protestors setting fire to St.Paul outside the convention and democratic hypocrits taking cheap shots at Palin on CNN, I think the country got a clear view of which party has resorted to filthy desperation.

Another strength that Palin has over Obama; She is not a bigot. Obama married a white hating bigot and attended an anti white church for 20 years. Can we risk having a black supremecisit in the white house?
Just a bit of advise for the democrats on this forum.
1st
You are running against McCain not Bush.  Keep wasting your time and money doing that if you wish.
2nd
When the vice president nominee is consistantly being put up and compared against the democrats presidential candidate, what does that say about Obama?  It weakens him.

Hmmm
I THINK SARA DID A SUPER JOB.IT WOULD nOT MATTER WHAT SHE SAID, YA'LL WOULD STILL CRITICIZE.
