Obama answers organizer jab

Posted: Thursday, September 04, 2008 4:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
YORK, Pa. -- Obama said Republicans' criticism of his work as a community organizer was more proof they were out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Americans, an argument that has become a major theme of his campaign in recent weeks.

In an eight-minute prmess conference in the scorching sun outside a factory here, Thursday he challenged Republican claims that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was being treated in a sexist way, saying they were trying to "work the refs" and that fair treatment meant withstanding scrutiny of her record and views.

The senator brushed off the Republican attacks, saying he had predicted them in his own acceptance speech last Thursday in Denver and, using another sports analogy, joked that he's been "called worse on the basketball court. It's not that big of a deal." When asked moments later as he got on the bus what he'd been called on the court, the senator told reporters they would have to "bleep" it.

On the community organizer criticism: "They [Republicans] haven't talked about the fact that I was a civil rights lawyer; they haven't talked about the fact that I taught constitutional law; they haven't talked about my work in the state legislature, in the United States Senate," he said. "They're talking about the three years of work that I did right out of college as if that's-- I'm making the leap from two or three years out of college into the presidency."

Obama added though that his work as a community organizer was relevant to who he is and the kind of people he's "fighting for."

"Why would that kind of work be ridiculous?" Obama said. "Who are they fighting for? What are they advocating for? They think that the lives of those folks who are struggling each and every day, that working with them to try to improve their lives is somehow not relevant to the presidency? I think maybe that's the problem -- that's part of why they're out of touch and they don't get it 'cause they haven't spent much time working on behalf of those folks."

On the accusations of sexist treatment of Palin: "If they want to work the refs they are free to do so, and I think the public can make their judgments about this," he said. "The notion that any questions about her work in Alaska is somehow not relevant to her potentially being vice president of the United States, doesn’t make too much sense to me. I think she’s got a compelling story, but I assume that she wants to be treated the same way that guys want to be treated, which means that their records are under scrutiny. I’ve been through this for 19 months. She’s been through it, what four days so far?"

Obama and his surrogates have repeatedly argued that McCain does not understand the economy in general and that the Republican convention this week was ignoring economic issues. The senator has been saying for weeks that he is best-suited to tackle the problems hardworking families are facing.

"I believe that the American people need change, they want change, and I’m in the best position to bring it and on a whole host of issues from energy to health care to education," he said. "If at some point Sen. McCain is-- actually addresses those issues, then I think that’s gonna be a useful debate for the American people to listen to."

The guy organized painting fences, growing gardens and picking up litter.   Powerful stuff there.
Interesting fact:

Jesus Christ was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor.
Great response, Obama. Those silly Republicans...they can't truly attack your background, so they make fun of it. And then they get angry when the American people want to know about the background of their VP candidate, and raise concerns.
Community organizers freed the slaves.
Community organizers got women the right to vote.
Community organizers are the people closest to the ground and help those that need help the most.
Perfect - Believe me Barack Obama get's it.

I love you Barack Obama

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Nice!!  Real nice!  Nuff Said!!
That's right, Barack!

Notice how Barack Obama and Joe Biden are not making personal attacks? It's because they don't need to. They can win on the issues.

McCain could have chosen a running mate that would have boosted the experience level on his ticket above that of the Obama/Biden ticket. But he chose not too, and it's gonna cost him. The American people are smarter than the McCain campaign thinks we are.

OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!!!

Obama/Biden '08
Another classy and forceful defense from Barack Obama.  Point out why they're full of it, pivot, move on to your own talking points.  THAT is how it's done.
WE LOVE YOU OBAMA!!
I have no problem with the media scrutinizing Palin's RECORD, but the last few days have been full of vile attacks on her children which is the lowest of low.  Of course, the problem is that the press doesn't want to scrutinize her record because then it will become clear that (a) hers is more impressive than Obama's, and (b) the press really never scrutinized Obama.  He was simply welcomed with open arms, no questions.  For 19 months the guy's warts have been completely ignored.  Perhaps it's time we start looking at those too?
Obama hasn't attacked Palin's family like she claims.  It's insulting for her to suggest otherwise.

It's dangerous for her to suggest her governing record is off limits to criticism.

Obama believes in open and honest government.  McCain believes in government behind closed doors.
This is why this man should and will be President!

Obama/Biden '08
Another Fun Fact: John McCain is 23 years older than the state of Alaska.

My Husband and I have been Registered Republicans for 45 years and fully planned on supporting the ticket this year as well.

My son has been a Community Organizer in Boston for the past 5 years and done tremendous and important work helping the less fortunate.  My Husband and I are very proud of him and until last night were proud Republicans as well- but we've NEVER been so insulted in all our lives.  Imagine if one of your children's chosen career was fed through the meat grinder the way ours was!!!!!

We were sitting there and the entire convention felt like it was mocking us, our wonderful son and the choices he's made in his life - to try and give back and make a difference. I'm embarrassed to say this morning the whole thing had me in tears.

This concept may be laughable to most in the GOP but it's not to us and we support him 100% and we could never support a Party that so willingly mocks members children.

Furthermore, I found the tone of the whole thing to be rather Sophomoric and had virtually NO substance at all - especially Rudy G and Palin.

We wanted to know more about Sarah Palin and instead got negativity and condescending attacks from WHO exactly?  Who are you- we still don't know except that you can insult others- many of them!

This whole thing came off as preachy, very divisive and just plain nasty.

Must admit that I feel terrible and ashamed that I would support a ticket and a Party that so freely tossed people like my son under the bus for Political gain?

Or is that just the way the GOP feels about Citizens that aren't up to their high standards of making a living? Who really are the elitist here????

Either way- the attack on Community Organizers may have initiated it and although if I relied on the speeches we still have NO Idea where Palin stands on the issues but- do know that she can recite snarky remarks that were obviously provided for her.

What are her plans ideas hopes- who knows?

Certainly the very limnited info that has been provided on her positions is quite enough for us  - this woman is WAY too  far Right, even for us lifetime Republicans. This is the direction the GOP wants as a symbol of the future? This is the direction you want to take the Party?  Creationism in School,  Iraq is a 'task from God', Abstanance, No incest or rape options, Ignore creationism, greenhouse effect is a myth and on and on.

Our youngest son (a Dentist- is that better?)-  is a ardent Obama supporter and has been Campaigning here in Richmond Virginia for him for months. Today we are going to join him, not just because our son and thousands of others that work in the Social services, was ridiculed but because in our hearts we've known for a while that THIS time- It's the right thing to do!   We will work with the same conviction we did for IKE way back when to get a ticket elected that we feel is representative for ALL  (or the vast majority of) the people. We will try and convince close friends relatives and people at our Catholic Church to do the same!

I would have never in my wildest dreams thought this would have happened - that my own Party would make me feel so badly,  completely ostracized and like the butt of a cruel and unnecessary joke. In the bigger picture, however-  It has become abundantly clear  to us and surely to some other Moderate Republicans and Independents-, that  the Pat Buchanan and Rovarian Wing has won out!!!!  These weren't the values and principals of the Party I supported, not even close. Last night my husband said to me- "President Reagan would be ashamed" and you know what- I bet he's right!

We are done buying into the GOP hate and scare machine and urge any open minded and realistic Republicans to do the same.

Thank you for allowing my thoughts to be heard.

God Bless

Sexism reigns alright. The McCain campaign want Palin to be treated like a "woman."
This guy is top notch. You know what's really scary, you can see him getting better and better as time goes on. He's learning abilities are out of this world. He's starting to answer questions rapidly and with passion. You can actually see him maturing as the days fly by.
How much does the GOP hate Community Organizers?

Looks like the McCain Campaign skipped out on Habitat for Humanity!

Looked up 'Community Organizer' on monster<dot>com. Nothing. Nada. None needed. None wanted.
"called worse on the basketball court. It's not that big of a deal."

I see 2004 revisited!  Obama it IS a big deal!!  You have to get tough and go for the jugular!  McShame and gang do it and they ARE succeeding!  The Kerry Campaign decided to take the high road all the way to defeat.  It will happen again.  Sadly the american electorate thrives on attacks and negative ads.  We cannot continue to "just follow the yellow brick road!"  It will NOT lead to the White House!

Frustrated but still supporting Obama and going after any republican jugular defending our platform and vision.  I expect the same from our candidate that says he is tough!  Sir, show it!  I know it's in you.
Why aren't you outraged!!!!!!!How dare an entire room of people laugh at the contributions of a community organizer.  IS IT FUNNY - that there are children that can not afford school supplies - thank goodness for community organizers that are handing out book bags to those kids. IS IT FUNNY that people can't find a job - but want to work.  thank goodness for community organizers that lend a helping hand by teaching how to regroup and find a new way.  IS IT FUNNY that people think they are so insignificant that they don't vote. thank goodness for community organizers who help them find the polls and tell them they have a voice.  IS IT FUNNY and I repeat ... IS IT FUNNY when someone is down and out and feels helpless.  thank goodness for community organizers that show them that someone CARES!

I AM OUTRAGED!!!!!!!!!!   I am outraged at the media for letting the republican party laugh and get away with this.  I am outraged that we as a community (USA) are letting the republicans laugh and get away with this.  Our situation is NOT FUNNY.  IT IS NOT FUNNY.  IT IS REALLY NOT FUNNY.
Good!

Let's pick Al Sharpton OR Jesse Jackson for President...they BOTH have MORE experience than Barack!
oh, Obama is taking off the gloves. Good for you. I am pleased that you responded to the negative attacks of community organizers. They are so important in helping people find jobs that the gop loves to outsource. Maybe if the gop knew what is was like to help people, then they would have a better appreciation of assisting those in need.
Thank you Obama for this response. I work for Community Actgion Agency in New Mexico and the work I do is demanding and heart-wrenching. My Agency receives more than 50 calls per week for utility and rent assistance, and the number of calls from elderly widows and veterans have more than doubled in the pasrt year. In New Mexico, the fastest growing segment of the population that is homeless is children under the age of 5. Any candidate who minimizes the value of work done at the grassroots level is not just out of touch, but is, frankly, a moron. Former senator Paul Wellstone said "We all do better when we all do better" and that sums up the underlying principle of the Obama campaign.Palin is so mired in her own self-righteousness that she cannot - or will not - acknowledge that Mayors and Governors aren't the ones helping people every day - we need an administration that supports local, grassroots community building - thankfully, there is a ticket that will do that - Obama/Biden.
You Tell Em!
Obama couldn't have cared less about any community he allegedly tried to organize. He used his "position" to make contacts with lobbying groups to fund his run for the state senate.
We will find out this year whether or not Americans like to align themselves with bullies and liars, or if America really does want change.

I hold out hope that Americans really are tired of the negative relentless divisive politics in which the McCain campaign is grooming Palin.
Obama, as opposed to Palin/McCain, "gets it!"  He has real ideas to address real problems, and has devoted his entire career to address concerns of the average person.  The Obama campaign needs to continue to emphasize their ideas to improve the economy, health care, education, etc. - issues that matter.  The petty and pitiful attacks that Palin and the other GOP attack dogs just do not do the American people justice.  We need more from our leaders than the ability to scare people into voting for them.  It is time to move beyond the politics of smear and fear......

Obama and Biden are taking the high road.  Leadership is not about making people afraid, it is about making people hope.....  It seems all the McCain/Palin have left is fear.  We cannot, cannot, cannot continue to have that type of leadership in Washington.  8 (years) is definitely ENOUGH!
Note to Media: DO YOUR JOB! VET SARAH PALIN, VET SARAH PALIN!

The man is presidential. He'll continue to stay above the fray as the negative GOP whiners self-destruct.
I've been listening to all the Palin hoopla for the last several days and everyone has jumped on the bandwagon, loving her like she's the best new ice cream flavor at Baskins & Robbins. You guys just don't get it. The only question the American people should be asking right now is this one....Is she ready to serve as President of the United States? Being a hockey mom who wears lipstick and thinks she's a pit bull is not a qualification. Far from it. She is a novice at best who is living in a state that gets all its revenue from oil and is not in touch with the realities that the rest of governors in this country all dealing with. We have more people in little Rhode Island so put it in perspective. She is not the second coming and you guys are missing the boat, a huge boat. Drip, drip, drip. That is what the media is going to do to her and McCain has already made the media the enemy; i.e. reat the Time magazine "interview" he just did. He has taken a calculated risk, knowing that his campaign needs to work outside the box in order to stop the Obama steam roller. Not a bad thought but his thinking is way flawed and won't work. If we had to vote tomorrow maybe he would stand a chance but with 60 days to go he will be at his peak tonight and then it will be all downhill. Remember....just ask the American people if they think Sara Palin could be President of the United States and then watch as people back track and say well, maybe not that job. Mayor,yes...governor, I guess so, but making that jump to national office will not be happening and she will be a footnote in American political history.
Thank you Sarah Palin.

Thank you for being exactly what you and your party think Senator Obama is.

An inexperienced young person who can read a teleprompter. A talker who gives a speech with no content.

Much like Huckabee, Guiliani, and Romney before you, you made a great cheerleader for John McCain. You threw your GOP delegates a lot of red meat. You bashed and mocked Obama. You made fun of his speech and the columns behind him. You made fun of his comments about people clinging to religion. You made fun of his lack of experience, and you got a standing ovation.

Congratulations.

However, I must point out that in fact in your speech you offered nothing. You offered no depth, no vision, and no plan for the future. You support John McCain. We get it. But what are you going to do with your role in the Vice Presidency (that is, after you learn what the job entails)? What are your thoughts on the economy, on healthcare, on the war in Iraq (which your son is about to go fight in). What are your plans for the mortgage crisis, the emptying of social security, and most importantly what are your thoughts on National Security?

You claim to want to fill Hillary Clinton’s role in this campaign. Well Governor Palin, Senator Clinton you are not. I know where she stands on issues and I know what she believes in, and from what I can tell it is everything you stand against.

Perhaps this was not the time for you to let us know your plan on any of these issues. Perhaps this was a speech for you to tell us who you are. You are a Hockey mom. That’s great. But what are you offering my country. Why are you running for office?

Perhaps we have to wait for your debate with Joe Biden so you can actually tell us anything of substance. For your sake I hope you are ready. You said you are ready for a challenge. And a challenge is what you will face.

Seriously.  If Obama doesn't get elected because McCain is putting on a GREAT sideshow, then America deserves what happens to it the next 4 years which will probably be worse than the last 8!
If Obama was "fighting for the people" in his communithy, he didn't do a very good job. Unemployment is in double digits in Chicago, and about 30% unemployment in the districts he organized. Be careful and try not to get shot either if you go into Baracks district. It has one of the highest murder rates in the country.
Good Job Obama.  Without Community Organizers and Faith Bases Groups we would not get anything done in most communities.
PALIN WHAT IS WRONG WITH BEING A COMMUITY ORGANIZER!!!!
Oh, snap!  THIS is why I'm voting for Obama!  Take it to 'em tonight on O'Reilly!
Thank you, Barack Obama!

I listened intently last night to hear what I thought would be a great introduction to an entirely new (to me) political player.  What I found was an condescending attack-filled speech that was long on sarcasm and short on policy.  Sarah Palin did not address a single issue important to my small town or my family.

What a missed opportunity.

I want a president that is smarter than Bush. I want a president that is more experienced than Palin but not as entrenched in party politics as McCain. I want a president that is intelligent enough to pick an experienced average Joe as his VP. I want real change!
OBAMA/BIDEN!!!
Obama: On the accusations of sexist treatment of Palin: "If they want to work the refs they are free to do so, and I think the public can make their judgments about this," he said.

What in the world does this mean? Can this man not just answer the question? Who are the "refs" he's talking about? Looks like Obama is cracking under the pressure.
I voted for Bush in 2004 because of national security, and I voted for Gore in 2000 because of his character. Gore was always decent and he proved he put country first when even though he fairly won, he stepped aside.

In other words I am an independent woman. I hate party politics. I forced myself to keep an open mind about Palin until I heard from her -- against a huge tide of logic, she is plainly inexperienced, and against a huge tide of vetting news about how hypocritical she is personally, about earmarks and the literally hundreds of millions of our tax dollars she has squirreled away up in Alaska.

If I was a Democratic, then I'd be in PUMA. Party Unity My U-know-what. May the best person win, and in their case, Obama won, didn't he. Hillary, eventually, took it in stride and she is standing up for her issues. I'm proud of her for that, not for "party unity."

So it came to last night and my mind was pretty well open. Palin completely lost me, and the independent girlfriends in the room with me, and my mostly conservative husband. We believe in common decency. Obama and Biden have given McCain and Palin both all the respect in the world. In turn, she insulted both of her political opponents and in turn, she insulted me and I suspect, most other independents.

McCain obviously made a hasty, poorly informed decision. She obviously belongs nowhere near the top of our government. Palin was like a partisan revivalist, like a cheerleader shouting "beat 'em, thrash 'em, kill 'em, trash 'em."

Partisanship is not reform, dividing this country is not a change, and it is not American. I would refer Palin to our most fair founders George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, to our great compromisers and keepers of our union Abe Lincoln and Henry Clay, and to the independent, decent, American choice in this election Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Go Obama!

The Republicans are great at smear tactics, ridicule, and "misleading" the American public a la WMDs, Iraq was involved with 911, had ties to Al Qaeda and all the other half-truths & unsubstantiated accusations regarding Obama.

Community Service is of utmost importance to those who need a helping hand, i.e., food pantries, homeless shelters, woman centers to escape abuse, etc., etc., which gives people HOPE letting them know someone is on THEIR SIDE, unlike the Republicans who seem to be only concerned with the wealthy and powerful.

The constant ridicule of "community organizer" will come back to haunt the Republicans who, after all are the ones who are out of touch with REAL Americans.
Sounds like Brack is alright then with the sexist treatment Palin is receiving. What a guy.
To all reporters -
Don't drink the cool aid! You started to find your voice again after Katrina - as an American - you need to do your job. I want the hardest legitimate questions asked of Sarah Palin - hard ones - and I expect you to ask them for me so I can judge her answers. She better be able to stand up to the press if she's going to stand up for America in the international arena. No one will be crying sexism if she has to face world leaders who don't like us.
But isn't it hilarious that McAilin canceled his Habitat for Humanity photop today.  Was he scared of those big bad community organizers??
GO OBAMA!!!!

Republicans and policies in the same sentence, not in this lifetime.  They are out of touch and I am glad Obama is hitting them on it!

First Read what happened to words like Obama slammed the GOP?  Got use to the word "slam" in the primary.  Get your game faces on. Looking forward to Pat Buchanon doing karate every evening. Pat is clueless.
It is an incredibly delicate balance Senator Obama has to deal with in his debate with Gov. Palin. On the one hand she would certainly argue for equal treatment, on the other I'm sure all hell would break loose if Joe Biden or, heaven forbid, Obama attacked her position. I am looking for Hilary Clinton to prove her pledge to assist Barack Obama into the White House. She is the one that can put right the slurs that were expressed last night....come on Hilary, you can take over from Barack after 8 years!
Exactly. Doesn't the GOP always tell us we need to get involved as volunteers at the local level? Remember "a thousand points of light?" So... when Obama did this, he is criticized for it. And that's not all he has  done since college - like he said, his whole life he has worked to help in communities, teach law, serve in the Illinois Senate and then the US Senate.
Thank you, someone finally points out that Obama has more experience than work in the community right out of college.  Palin can get elected in a conservative state, sure, but she's not qualified to do much else and wouldn't even get an interview for jobs that Obama would be offered with bonuses. Honestly, who is the lightweight?
Barack H. Obama babbles: "They [Republicans] haven't talked about the fact that I was a civil rights lawyer; they haven't talked about the fact that I taught constitutional law; they haven't talked about my work in the state legislature, in the United States Senate,"

Okay Barack, we've got a minute or so, lets talk about all of your accomplishments. And it's real nice that you're a lawyer, but don't you think we have enough lawyers Barack? And here's a question for you Barack, name one person you helped with all of your lawyer skills, besides yourself that is.
Barack, no one is saying that being a community organizer isn't a good thing or doesn't potentially help people.  These comments have to do with experience and preparedness to lead.  You guys started this with the subtle but demeaning comments about Palin only being the mayor of a small town.  You were questionning her qualifications.  Now they're returning the favor.

But one question we'd all like to hear more about....please explain and account for the millions of dollars spent during those community organizer years and what the long term benefit to those local citizens was.
