McCain hits Obama on defense, 'bitter'

Posted: Monday, September 08, 2008 2:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy
LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. -- For months McCain has been accusing Obama of blind allegiance to the Democratic Party, but today he said that his opponent's failure to buck his party could be dangerous when it comes to defense spending.

"This weekend Sen. Obama was asked for an example of a time when he bucked his party," McCain said. "His answer was defense spending. He says now he wants to increase it, but during the primary he told a liberal advocacy group that he'd cut defense spending by tens of billions of dollars. And he promised them he would quote 'slow our development of future combat systems.'"

McCain added that recently America has realized that "this is an even more dangerous world than we had thought" and that this is not a time to "slow our development of future combat systems."

"This is not that time," McCain said. "And that's not bucking his party, that's telling them just what they want to hear."

Catering to the Left is "wrong for America," McCain said, and Obama's "wrong for America." But continuing in his campaign's tradition of comparing McCain's running mate to Obama rather than McCain himself, the GOP nominee concluded, "This governor is right for America. Sarah Palin is right for America."

Traveling with the GOP ticket today was also Palin's husband Todd. After introducing Todd Palin and calling him a "wonderful father," McCain made an obtuse reference to Obama's controversial comments about bitterness in small-town America by saying that his ticket would bring the Palins' values back to Washington.

"Americans, wherever they are, aren't like Sen. Obama said in small towns in Pennsylvania that only cherish their Second Amendment rights and their religion because they don't like the economic conditions," McCain said. "Americans in Missouri, Pennsylvania and all over this country value those rights because they love America, because they love America."

It's an all out offensive by McCain/Palin today on Obama! Is Obama going to fight back, or is he just going to give interviews to George Stephenopolis on the set of Hee-Haw?
Boy McCain you and Bush are sure in each others pockets ratcheting up the intesity: ABCNEWS Bush Cancels Civilian Nuclear Deal With Russia
Keep Keith and Chris --get rid of Dick Gregory and Pat Buchanan, we have to have SOME news that is not 100% pro republican. Why not get rid of Joe Scarborough - he was the one who was drunk and fighting with Schuster.  If KO goes, I go, from MSNBC and so will his millions of viewers.
Not a word about Palin's gaffe on Fannie/Freddie?

You wonder why the dems always lose.
Palin's first big Gaffe: She stated on Sunday that Fannie Mae and Freddie were getting too big for taxpayers. ?? Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were private companies that are now being steered by the U.S. Government. A govenor should know that.

Why does the media continue to participate in this false framing of the issue? Why is "bucking" your party a good thing necessarily? What if your party is right?

I'll put the record of the Democratic party for the last 16 years up against the record of the Republican party ANYDAY.

The Republican party has had FREE REIGN to implement their economic and foreign policy ideas, and we are reaping what they have sown now:

- a mortgage meltdown
- fossil fuel dependence
- mistrust of governement
- sky high national deficit
- thousands of dead and maimed soldiers in Iraq,
- substandard care for military veterans
- sky high health care costs
- the politicization of the Justice department
- widespread corruption and cronyism

and the list goes on and on.

There is a party that needs "bucking", and that is the REPUBLICAN PARTY. How many times will America fall for their lies?

Not this time.

Rachel Maddow calls LIES LIES and Keith Olbermann is right!!!!!!

Americans should be INSULTED and APPALLED by Senator McCain pandering to fear by deliberately selecting 9/11 imagery to further his political career. To be blunt, how many of the thousands of victims (republicans, democrats or independents) are rolling over in their graves because their legacy, decided by McCain, should constitute a YES vote for HIM? Friends, families and all Americans should collectively PUSHBACK such deplorable injustice, pretense and political opportunism. There is no HONOR to be found in Senator McCain’s Campaign endeavor, only GREED. John McCain doesn't “get it” and I'd like to say that's besides the point, but it isn’t.

You must agree that no matter your political predisposition, one thing should be obvious by now: callous, disrespectful and un-classy is not Senator Obama's style.

Think rationally now, just WHO is John McCain pandering to?
And what does McCain know about small towns.  Oh and by the way, how about that celebrity image.  Oh right, it's only negative if it's a Democrat.  Palin being a celebrity is a good thing.  It's negative for Obama, right.
Careful grandpa, you're drooling.  I'm bitter that someone involved in Charles Keating's scam on so many Americans can even be running for president.
Somebody woke up McCain ? I thought he enjoyed the second place on his/her ticket.
I'd think it would be useful to hear some substance from them instead of the usual hate stump written by the Bush empire.
September 26tha and October 2nd can't get here fast enough for me.
Where's the coverage of the Clinton event in Florida today?  Two back to back articles on McCain-Palin...nothing on appearances by Democrats or responses by Democrats.

Maybe those in charge of your political coverage shouldn't have ties to the McCain camp?  Ah, but Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews were too divisive?  Riiiiiggghhht.

Oh, and by the way Chuck, North Carolina is within 5%, your supposed determination for for what defines a 'toss up' state, yet it remained red in your calculations this morning...
Yup, Obama wants to increase military spending, lower taxes, extend the powers of the Patriot act, make abortion illegal, strengthen our borders against illegal aliens, finally get the Robert Bork appointment to the SC completed, and go to a nice church everyday.

What a phony.
Ah, John.  I suppose the Palin pick was bucking your Party?  No, that would have been the choice you wanted to make in Joe Lieberman.  In fact, you caved big time and catered to the Right, as you have been doing all through this election cycle. You and Sarah are both wrong for America.
Most Americans are certainly NOT like Palin and her religious right conservative beliefs, or McCain and his 7 or so houses!  Why don't you start telling us what you are going to do for us McCain instead of just attacking Obama.
Actually, Sen. Obama has said he would send our troops into Afghanistan to eliminate al Qaeda, and would attack Iran if they continued their quest of developing nuclear (new-clear) weapons.

Why isn't Sen. McCain talking about domestic issues, like the economy?  It'd be nice to know where he stands instead of being a "war candidate."
<Catering to the Left is "wrong for America," McCain said>

Sorta like him catering to the right?

What a hypocrit.

This from the guy who once opposed the "agents of intolerance" . . . who said he would run a respectful campaign . . . who wanted Lieberman but caved in to the extreme right and "picked" Palin.

Oh yeah . . . talk about catering!

And American really needs the Palins' values?

Help us Lord!
McCain is the LAST person to comment on someone's blind allegiance to a party.  You can almost see Rove's lips move when McCain and Palin talk.

Not only does Senator Obama want to cut military spending, he wants to cut NASA funding.  Our space program generates thousands of high paying, high tech jobs, not to mention thousands of jobs for suppliers, and generates enthusiasm for the kinds of science college majors that we need.Anecdotally, my husband majored in Chemical Engineering in college, and is a member of several engineering honor societies;  his interest in this discipline was sparked as young boy by the first moon missions.  Although he did not enter the space program, it was that that propelled him into his career.  WE NEED MORE SCIENTISTS!  Cutting NASA to balance the budget is like shorting your mortgage payment so you have more movie money.
Bitter v. Bitter.

At least we weren't called whiners...
McOnMyLastNerve is really not in touch with the American people and he bucked his party in 2000, but he has been towing the line every since then...try 90% of the time.

Has McCrazy really viewed our economy?
Clinging to guns and religion.
Well I am clinging to my gun, because some of the  desperate people without jobs are stealing and breaking into homes.  I was a victim...the deputy told me it was best I have a gun.
I am definitely clinging to religion so this economy and the people of the great nation can go back to normacy without rethuglican rule.
McCains hitting on all cylinders now. Obamas still trying to get his windmill started.
The only reason I will click on msnbc.com from now on is to check my email.  Your reporting on the campaign is remarkably "unfair and unbalanced".

I guess Obama, Biden, Clinton et al have been sitting home eating bon bons today, right?

Since I cannot find out what is happening on BOTH sides, I'll take my business to someplace that will tell me.

bu-bye msnbc
Sweet.  McCain's lying again.  Glad to hear him cozying up to the people he used to call "agents of intolerance."
I hope I don't sound like a nut job, but this Palin gaffe is huge. She doesn't know foreign affairs, that's fine, she's a governor. BUT if she doesn't understand key economic concepts, then how is she qualified at such a crucial time??? This is huge. 2 idiots on the economy after having Bush, no way, no how.
How about McCain/Palin discussing how they want to keep the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, don't favor universal healthcare, Palin does not believe in global warming and opposes abortion even in cases of incest and rape; of how McCain voted for Bush policies 90% of the time and Palin was for the bridge to nowhere and took special federal handouts while mayor and governor - They are the 'no change' 'no maverick' ticket.
Why don't you spend some time covering and reporting on Palin's gaffes?  Isn't this what you are supposed to do?  Check out http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/08/palin-makes-her-first-gaf_n_124792.html

Have all of you at the MSM fallen prey to the GOP's attacks on the media?  Are you now cowering?  Do your job.  Thanks.
WOW - a couple of speeches and now McCain says he is  bucking his party.  When he voted with Bush 90% of the time. Doesn't make sense to me. He is not the maverick he used to be. Wake up America - if anything happens to him then Sarah Palin takes over without any experience, foreign policy knowledge and the McCain group is giving her domestic issues revamping from his campaign. This is just stupid. Why would I want to vote for them.
Ah, another Republican lobbyist nailed to the Abramoff wall!  Go Repugs...
Why no story about McCain's son's involvement in a bank that was seized by the feds on FRIDAY.  We sure heard about Joe Biden's son plenty last week.

WHY WON'T THE MEDIA DO THEIR JOB???  WHY IS IT THAT ALL WE HEAR ARE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN TALKING POINTS.
Well.. Palin video of her speech at the June "Masters of Commission" graduation at Wasilla's Assemblies of God Church has finally hit the mainstream media...judge for yourself and then let's talk.
I finally applaud the action of MSNBC in removing Matthews and Oberman from the political anchor.  these two were bitter, angry, and vile and it spewed all over the TV. I know daviDavid Gregory will be less partial and we will watch MSNBC more.
Obama once used the Republicans rest room. If that's working with the other side, I don't know what is.
I've been listening to Obama talk about increasing troop strength for almost two years.  Can McCain's lies about Obama be intentional, or is this man senile?  Either way, I will do my best to keep him far away from the White House.

And by the way, are you going to cover Sarah Palin's first effort to be weaned from the teleprompter?  She told a Colorado crowd that Fannie May and Freddie Mac have "gotten too big and cost the taxpayers too much".  They are private enterprises not funded by the taxpayers.

There is too much at stake to vote for such an incapable VP when you have a 72 y/o four time cancer survivor.

Not this time.
McCain is trying to compare Palin to Obama, because he has conceded that when it is McCain against Obama, McCain loses.
A big part of the reason the world is more dangerous is because of Bush/McCain invading Iraq for NO GOOD REASON!

We can talk about the surge all day, but who had the judgement to invade Iraq, and who had the judgement NOT to?!

Obama was right from the start, and the surge should have never happened, because we should not have invaded Iraq.  DUH!!!!!
You don't have to 'buck your party' if your party is the only one with  the good ideas!
I can't wait until this election is over. I can't take it anymore. If Americans are stupid enough to vote McCain, we get every harmful, sad consequence that will come our way in the next 4 years; we have no one to blame but the ignorant American people.
What a nut case.  Who's running for president here McCain or "the Palins' values"
90% of the time McCain voted with GWB! I for on will never vote for someone who thinks that GWB is right that much. That 10% of time he didn't agree with GWB now John McCain has flip floped on Drilling, Taxes, SSI, and Vouchers now he is more in agreement with GWB than he was before the campaign started.
And where was John McCain when the Veterans needed him to vote for benefits?  NO WHERE, A NO SHOW.

He opposed Sen Webb's GI Bill, and he's opposed funding for veterans programs.

What a joke.
HEY, corporate-owned MSNBC:

You are aware that Sen. Obama and Sen. Biden are campaigning, right??? It's amazing to me that you guys are willing to sell this country out because of monetary reasons.  And you call yourselves journalists- HA!

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
I love America, and that is why I hope and pray that these two republiucans do no get in the White House. I do not want my soldiers to be under the direction of this woman, and I am female. Forget her pro-life ideals, forget the bridge to nowhere that she and Johnny are lying about, think about her not knowing what a VP does!!!! She is scary, and she may have control of my soldiers.  George Bush and Dick Cheney blatantly lied to get us in Iraq,  and to think that this woman may have the control to either keep my soldiers there or to get us out. Do you really want that, America? I love the way these politicians go to church every Sunday, call themselves Christians, and then lie like rugs. And to blatantly tell lies on another person. Oh, sorry, I forgot, she is pro life and that makes her and McCain both Christian.
The Palins family values back to America. No thanks on that. I would like my daughter to go to college before she gets pregnant.  I also prefer turkey burgers to moose, thanks.

I guess McCain family values are too warped to sit well with the rabid conservative base, huh, so McCain has to talk about Palin's?
mccain-palin are fear mongerers.  They are the ones that are dangerous for America considering they would continue the failed Bush policies for another 4 years.  Their policies are wron for America.  Sen. Obama on the other hand is right person for President at this time.
It's better than being wrong 90% of the time. What has he done for us? One thing, war. If he wins, there will two class, poor and rich.
Does anyone else see the GOP ticket as a continuous SNL skit?  Only, I have to shake myself and realize that it is not a joke--this is really happening.
If the McCain ticket is elected, I have to believe that this idea called Democracy just does not work.  Americans are too stupid to govern themselves.
Did Mccain check with Palin on that before he spoke up? It's pretty obvious that she is running the show for the Republicans now.

I wonder how mcsenile will square the circle over how he is for bipartisanship and Palin revels in gouging her opponents eyes out...Plain wins I think
Just another flip flop from Obama. Not surprising, not surprising at all. Maybe the decisions are above his pay grade.
Fear, fear, fear.  This blatherful palaver is as anti-American as it comes.  John McCain was a 32 year old POW.  Fine.  One who accuses those who disagree with him as not being "American", and who hides behind the flag is what I would call a traitor to true American values---the social compact which as existed the past 230 years; the fundamental freedoms (including freedom, not tyranny, of speech and religious tolerance), and the central role of the rights of the individual.

We are surely smarter than this--and, yes, braver and more patriotic, too.  If one reads Friedman from yesterday's NYT (re the foolishness of throwing money at the Georgians) and looks at Woodward's somewhat frightening view of the absolute power given our Chief Executive, one should think very hard about dismissing in a catch-phrase or two the complexities of this stupid war that Bush and the neo-cons blundered us into and which we are far from out of.

In that regard, Tom Brokaw's parrying with Biden was embarrassing yesterday.  Brokaw should be smart enough to not insist on the Bill O'Reilly-esque notion of reducing things to "c'mon, say the surge is good".  What a 'gotcha' game, Brokaw----please don't dumb us down anymore.  If you lack the curiousity and energy, retire again.

The press has an important role in making sure the debate is fair discussion of the issues---not 'even' or 50/50 so much as making sure that false issues and perceptions are weeded out.  E.g., the 'press is sexist' when Palin is criticized; or, the "you aren't patriot enough" when war strategy is criticized just cannot be allowed.  Pull back the curtain, folks.
Barack is sinking faster then a dead toad full of buckshot.
