Biden: McCain-Palin all talk

Posted: Tuesday, September 09, 2008 1:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Biden said that he's glad McCain "finally realized the idea that this election is about change," but said that while the message is new, his plans for the country don't back it up.

“John must have been the last guy in American politics to know this [election] is about change,” he said. “The only problem is that all John’s changing is the rhetoric. And all he’d change as president of the United States in my view is the name at the top of Bush’s policies. That’s the only change that you’re going to see, and all that would do is keep America shortchanged.”

The Delaware senator argued Republicans don’t understand the anxiety most Americans feel about the economy, and certainly have not explained how they’d ease it.

“I’ve never seen so many Americans get knocked down with so little help, so little recognition from their government, from this administration,” he said. “And apparently there’s not going to be a whole lot more recognition of their plight and concern on the part, based on what’s said so far, from the Republican ticket. Ladies and gentlemen, he and Sarah Palin have said nothing about how they’re going to bring about change.”

Biden’s primary attack line on the GOP ticket has been that they offer only glib attack lines and distortions of Obama’s plans, especially on taxes. Biden told several hundred here in Central Missouri that while the Democrats would give tax cuts to 95 percent of those who take home a paycheck, McCain would leave over 100 million families out of his tax plan, while giving $4 billion in incentives to oil companies.

Politifact debunked Biden’s claim that 100 million families would be left out -- that it would be more accurate to say about 100 million people or about 65 million families.

“This isn’t change this is more of the same,” Biden said. “I can hardly wait until we get into the details of our respective tax policies.”

This event was the rare one at which Biden took questions that one of them was not about his counterpart on the Republican ticket, Gov. Sarah Palin. But he did refer to her when one woman asked about how he and Obama would help those with disabilities. In her convention speech, Palin said she’d be a voice for parents with children with special needs, noting her newborn son, Trig, who has Down’s Syndrome.

“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have … the joy and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability,” said Biden, who’s wife is a teacher. “Well guess what folks? If you care about it, why don't you support stem cell research?”

Biden’s itinerary today takes him from the heart of Missouri to the Democratic stronghold of St. Louis. He told the audience that he felt good about the campaign, and said the Obama organization here would go a long way to turning the state blue.

The republican trick is to keep the Obama/Biden campaign's hands tied because they do not want to be accused of sexism.  That is the only reason they picked Sarah.  But Sarah herself said she is a pitbull with lipstick.  Good, because the world is run by pitbulls with ties!  So, if Sarah is a pitbull with lipstick and she gets ripped by Biden, a pitbull in a tie, and her fans cry sexism, then Sarah is not fit to run this country let alone protect us from the pitbulls in ties that run the world!  So when they cry sexism does that mean we need a man, a pitbull in a tie, to come to Sarah’s rescue because she is the victim of sexism, the damsel in distress?  Let’s keep it real.  World wide, internationally, the pitbull in lipstick will be the “victim” of sexism and the pitbulls in ties are not going to care less about her complaining about sexism. Get over it, it’s a trick that is not going to work.  Give her hell Biden, just remember, she’s a pitbull with lipstick.
FRead: [Biden said that he's glad McCain "finally realized the idea that this election is about change," but said that while the message is new, his plans for the country don't back it up.]

Unless you count moving to a socialistic society, then neither do Obamas.
Every election is about "change" there is always someone un happy with current policies and want to change it, your messiah isn't toting anything new here.

Also, Change could be worse...anyone think of that?

And Biden shouldn't talk about being all talk considering Obama and Himself haven't really shown how they are going to "change the world" just talked about doing it
Go Joe!!  It's great to hear you and Barack out on the stump talking to people about actual issues, day after day.  The other side can keep flailing about with their sarcastic attacks on you guys, but the people know the real deal when they see it.  The american people are too smart to fall for a contest of personalities instead of issues.  Keep up the great work.
Not enough aggression. They need to actively PROVE that Palin and McCain are lying. There tactic so far is not working with the blue collar voters.
Biden is right. McCain and Palin have not addressed at all what they would do to improve the economy except to say to look at verious alternate energy sources which Obama has ben saying all along. Can any McCain/Palin supporter here list for me 5 "specific" plans or proposals that McCain or Palin have offered the Amercian people to resolve this economic crises beyond that of providing the largest of tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% of this country many of whom pay no taxes at all including many large and profitable corporations because of the loopholes they can take advantage of?
I am skeptically optimistic about the color Missouri will be on November 4th.

I live in True Blue KC,MO.  With the exception of Columbia and St. Louis, I can't predict with any confidence what will happen.

I know Matt Blunt (Governor) is not running for re-election and the state has been reeling from his 'Blunt Trauma' and other fiscally nightmarish policies.  It is just too grey to predict with any accuracy.

I have hope (and for now - that's about it!)
Joe Biden GETS IT!

He will give direction & help Barack Obama navigate through Washington to achieve the change they are both talking about.

Barack needs an "insider" in order to change the politics of Washington.

Leadership & experience ----  VOTE for OBAMA/BIDEN '08

How very true.  If only the American people would vote with their brains.  Obama/Biden is the hope we have left.
anybody with a brain can clearly see they are all talk. McLame cant even energize his own party so he brings on this puppet in a skirt who cant even come up with her own lines without someone writing it for her. Grant it its not all about a speech but if you are so much of a reformer then state in your own words what you plan to do to actually help the lower 48 states. Not to discredit the good folks in Alaska but do you really want a big time oil woman who represents Alaska, one of the most remote states who insinuate that snowmobiling and moose hunting and being just is a normal way of life that we can all relate to help us get our affairs in order. we need to hear about health care, education, taxes, lowering oil prices and becoming energy independent. we all know the problem wont be solved over night but drilling for more oil is not the answer either. Just a temporary fix and another gimick like the whole gas holiday trick. remeber how Obama helped us understand how it was more of a gimick and not a solution.
Joe, you are being too kind, they are not about talking,  they are all about lying.  Thankfully Ed Rendell and a few others are finally saying that. As for Sarah,  even the Wall Street Journal has called her on the Bridge to Nowhere.  That is where she belongs. Nowhere
Way to go Joe!  Keep it up.

It would be absurd to claim that if Joe is tough on Sarah that he's sexist... wouldn't treating her differently than he would a man be the real sexism?!

Can't wait for the debates.  Then we'll see who really has a grip on what our country needs.

I don't want my taxes to increase, but other than that, this independant mostly agrees with the dems this time around!
Biden should have mentioned the Saint Sarah of the Tundra vetoed assistance for special needs families in Alaska (as well as assistance for teen pregnancy). Ironic, huh!

Maybe McPalin is waiting for his policy from Karl Rove.
100 million people--100 million families. I make more mistakes than that when I type a comment for posting. Yes, he misspoke.  No, he did not lie.  Palin lies about her bridge-to-nowhere.  She co-mingles earmarked money.  She charges Alaska a per diem cost when staying in her own house.  She lies about her involvement in the Alaska Independence Party.

You know, when you lose your integrity, as a person and politician, you have nothing left.  Just lipstick and an empty dress.  In the next 30 days Sarah will be vetted and John McCain will see that shooting from the hip is a bit like shooting yourself in the foot.
All talk alright - Biden should know. Was it all talk when McCain got all those bills that he authored through the Senate? Was it all talk when Palin proposed and got agreements on the budget in Alaska? Was it all talk when when McCain fought for his country? Was it all talk when Palin negotiated a tax plan with the oil companies in Alaska?

All talk is what you do if you're a Community Organizer, or voting Present on hundreds of bills.
When we talk about issues, the DEMOCRATS WIN!!  Keep focused on the issues, because they are what will matter in January 2009!  McPallin doesn't signify change . . . it's all spin.  Pallin is more right than Bush (Bush with lipstick) . . . McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time. McCain can't talk about the issues because he's wrong on all of them.

Obama/Biden!!!
This is confusing. Biden talks about change for the economy, but the only change his man Obama has proposed is higher taxes and rebate checks. That's not much change that we can believe in.
Biden should also point out to McCain/Palin that you can't be a reformer if:
*you are under investigation for abuse of power
*you bill the government for personal expenses
*you make hiring/firing decisions based on personal vendettas
*you lie about your accomplishments and positions.

McCain is a Maverick alright -remember the rusty bucket of bolts car from the 1970s called the Maverick  That is John McCain.
Nice to see Joe out on the trail again and telling lies.
If McCain & Co were actually for any CHANGE the GOP wouldn't be so excited about them having a chance to stay in office with the same BUSH agenda. They stole the caption CHANGE from Obama because they saw it was working,  they might fool some but surely not enough people?  I pray not, from the frying pan to the fire!  With this new McCain ticket they are further right than Bush!  Maybe even further right than the shrub!!
Can ANY Republican PLEASE tell me where McCain differs from Bush on the economy? Foreign policy? Education?

McCain has voted with Bush over 90% of the time...

McCAIN: "I'm the agent of change!"

Alaska is #1 in TAXES per resident, and #1 in SPENDING per resident...

PALIN: "I'm a reformer/maverick!"
I think Alaska is a much more important state then Delaware. We know which one to sell if we need the money.
Biden will keep working, sleeves rolled up. Attacking with issues and positions, not empty rhetoric!  You go Joe!

Obama-Biden '08
From Politico and Huffington Post:

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch, who endorsed and worked for George W. Bush in 2004, is endorsing Obama today, NY1 first reported.

I asked Koch just now what prompted the move.

"The designation of Palin to be vice president," he said. "She's scary."

He said he was alarmed by the report that she'd triggered a conflict with the local librarian in Wasilla, Alaska by inquiring about the possibility of banning books.

Wow. You don't support help for your own child. You only talk about it.

Leaders who think what's good for their kids is good for everyone else's should be a natural thing. Getting called out on something so seemingly mundane is pretty bad no matter who you're voting for.
It really angers me all teh talk about Palin and her benefitting the GOP and her celeb status. She basically represents everything negative the Repubs said about Obama, except in her case it is true. I really hope that Missouri learns from its mistakes with BUsh. In 2004 here in the suburbs of STL you would see Bush bumper stickers, now you could not find a bush bumper sticker anywhere if you looked with a microscope. Hopefully we here in Missouri with STL and KC leading the way will fially be on the side right.
NO way No How No McPalin!!!
Yes we can Obiden 08!!
Say what you will about Biden, but he's a true work horse for the American people unlike McCain who's riding hard on the tail of a woman to get to the White House like the wuss he is.  The Obama campaign doesn't really have to do much to combat Palin's popularity, the MSM is doing a good job of that these days.  If McCain won't properly vett Palin, the American public will certainly demand to hear about this unknown woman and get results from the people who are on TV every single day who will report the news whether they like it or not.
Go after em' Joe.  Their lies mustn't stand.  The RNC is selling an empty package wrapped in a lie and our children will suffer if it's sold.  Bring on the debates and let's hear some substance.  Also, I'd like to hear more about the report of Palin's son being arrested and given a choice between the military and jail.
From what I read, stem cell research is rapidly being replaced by newer techniques affording the same results. In view of this, Biden should be careful about pushing this subject because Palin knows more about it than he does.
Thanks Joe; I have faith that this year the people of the U.S. will use thier heads and vote thier own intrest, weather it be republician or democratic. There will be something that either John McCain or Gov. Palin says that will smack the poor people and
real working class people right in the face. They have
no plans except what the GOP already has working now.
Of course thats a lot , after another 4 years of GOP
they should be able to fit us all with our yokes and
we will truley be thier slaves. I know that Obama is just a politician, but at least hes smart and will
surround himself with other smart people with good ideas. Hopefully some of those ideas will take root and some things could turn out better than they are right now. Maybe health care, maybe jobs in green industries, maybe we could bring some of our troops home and then have enough sense not to send them on a
stupid mission that only helps the no bid contractors.
Maybe we could use diploymacy.  Oh Well, just thinking out loud.
No way
No how
No McCain

marty
Attacking a pitbull

Who is "attacking" mooseburger Palin? So many of you who say that she is being attacked are the same hypocrites who were yelling "if you can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen" during the primaries.

Now you expect everyone to treat pitbull Palin with kid gloves?

The only women "motivated" to vote for Palin/McCain are women who believe in "faith healing" without doctors, creationism, no equal pay, abstinence without actually teaching it your own daughters, dividing America up by secession, criminalizing abortions even in the case of rape, abuse of power, and gullible women who love mooseburger meat..........

She has been lying about her own record, wants it both ways when it comes to her own families "issues" (she wants to parade them on stage~ but nobody is allowed to talk about even seeing them there!), and she refuses to answer ANY questions, if anyone tries to ask; they're "sexist"!

I hope all of the ignorant women who support her will WAKE UP!!!!!!! She isn't ready to be our next commander in chief, and that is the primary responsibility of a Vice Presidential pick!!!!!!

Ready to serve?

Pitbulls aren't a good example of leadership...... with or without lipstick!

NO PITBULL PALIN IN THE WHITEHOUSE!
Biden knows all about change.  After all, he's the one who so quickly changed his mind about Barack Obama.  In the primaries Obama was "not ready to lead" this country according to Biden.  But then after he's picked by Obama as his running mate, quick draw Joe now says Obama is clearly ready to lead.  What changed, Joe...besides the wind and your own career advancement?  Is that "change" we can count on?
McCain voted with Bush 90 percent of the time and Bush has never voted? Obama voted with Bush 80 percent of the time and only voted 10 percent of the time. Gosh, I hate this new math.
Andy S in Denver:  I agree wholeheartedly.   The mistake Dems make is that they give people the benefit of the doubt.  The reason the GOP wins again and again and again is that they know the ONLY way their message will be swallowed is if they hammer it over and over and over.  In fact, the only way to cut through the noise and get attention is to do things that the cynics and "elites" knock.  Look how effective the "celebrity" ads were.  I thought they were idiotic but we're talking about an election here, not a PhD thesis.  Unless and until Obama develops a hard-edge, he's going to be in trouble.  Look, we all wish it weren't so.  But it'll be a whole lot better to win in November than to be wringing hands in December and have Karl Rove laughing yet again.
Not just "talk" ... those are "hate speeches" that unfortunately play well with the simple minded voter.
All politicians need to do some personality profiling exercise to understand the needs of people in the different segment of the country. The challenges the family with a child with disability are not just about stem cell research. Also about healthcare, child care, education. Even Sarah Palin herself seems not understanding what challenges wait ahead of her, because government officials tend to get good supports which normal citizens can not access to. This is not a criticism to Palin, this is a criticism to all politicians, Obama, Biden, McCain, Palin. Obama has better policies for these families, but if so, please explain them better.
Republicans have always been masterful at crafting a message that sounds compelling, but says very little.  Take for example McCain/Palin adopting a "Mavericks for Change" message.  McCain himself boasted voting for Bushes policies 90% of the time.  Palin supports even more of the Bush/Cheney policies.  She even objects to abortion in the case of rape and incest.

This Republican ticket still subscribes to tactics that avoid discussion of the issues: the economy, unemployment, the mortgage crisis, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, health care and education just to name a few.  Why? Because they have no new solutions for these problems.  But the subtle message is as follows:  We are familiar, comfortable - like that favorite pair of loafers or comfortable old recliner. Change can be wrong for America, especially if it comes from someone who is different.  Can you really trust that he (Obama) has your interests at heart - if he isn't really like you?  ITS THE SAME OLD DEVISIVE POLITICS - PIT MEN AGAINST WOMEN, BLACK AGAINST WHITE, YOUNG AGAINST OLD.  The only difference this time is the the message is covert.  But it is definately still there.  The New Republican Party:  A Pitbull in Lipstick indeed.
Senator Biden on John McCain vs. Barack Obama!

From ABC’s “This Week”, when Biden was still running for President.

Moderator George Stephanopolous saying to Senator Biden, "You were asked if he (Obama) was ready. You said, I think he can be ready but right now I don’t believe he is. The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.”

Senator Biden then says “I think that I stand by that statement.”

The announcer asked Senator Biden “what does he (Biden) say of John McCain?”

From Jon Stewart’s “The Daily Show”, Biden says “I would be honored to run with or against John McCain because I think the country would be better off.”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDVUPqoowf8

Joe thanks for your support!!!
As far as I'm concerned, everyone can say whatever they want; however, the proof is there for anyone to see. We know Obama's views on healthcare, taxes, foreign policy, jobs, and social security. What have we heard from McCain or Palin on these issues? Like Joe says, "Absolute silence." If people vote with any kind of intellegience on this subject, it should be a slam dunk for Obama/Biden. If they don't and McCain/Palin win, I'm moving to Canada because I can imagine how much worse things are going to get here.
Biden has worked for years to bring reform to many aspects of washington he has stood by his ideas even when his own party diagreed with him.
McCain on the other had has flip flopped at every oppotunity in recent years in order to fit the bill to become Prsident at whatever cost to America.

People of America you  need to wake up do your homework instead of being wowed by the WOW factor.  Palin billed the state of Alaska per diem for 312 days at home.  Will she bill the US goverment for her stay in the VP mansion in DC.

Additionally, she continues to go on and on about her stand on the bridge to nowhere, which if you really want to know she backed and than backd down from (but kept the monies).  She also has gained millions of earmark monies for the tiny town of Wasilla, so tell me how does she plan to go up against the lobbyist of Washington if she and McCain have them in their back pockets.

People  educate yourselves on the FACTS our country is 470 Billion dollars in debt at this time. With McCain in power and his voting record of 90% with the Bush backers can any of you afford another four years.  I know I CAN'T.

Suzanne, Western NY
when people lie it becomes easier to trip them up in their own rhetoric. great point joe made about the repubs not supporting stem cell research. totally supports the "all talk" express viewpoint!
Obama has plans, not for quixotic foreign wars, but for serious economic, educational, energy, and health
care mobilization at home.  McCain offers disposable band-aids like the "drill now" mantra that even McCain himself says will only have a "psychological" effect on gas prices.

But worse than that, we have learned over the summer that McCain's trigger-happy temperment and reactionary policies offer worse than no change.  He is an unstable bridge back not just to Bush policies but to Vietnam and the cold war.

Obama will navigate the fast-moving changes of the 21st century; McCain would put America on hold.

"drill now" mantra that even McCain says will only have a "psychological" effect on gas prices.
Hope and Change are Myths

Was it all talk when McCain got all those bills that he authored through the Senate? Was it all talk when Palin proposed and got agreements on the budget in Alaska? Was it all talk when when McCain fought for his country? Was it all talk when Palin negotiated a tax plan with the oil companies in Alaska?
------------------------------------------------------

First.... can you reference anything he did as a "Maverick" within the last 8 years?  Please don't say the surge, because if you saw 60 minutes last week... you know who came up with that notion, it was McCain's twin brother, George.

Every since GWB punked McCain, he's been in Bush's hip pocket... voting with him over 90% of the time... more than any other sitting senator!  Is that change or lip service?  I mean, if you didn't agree with Bush on most of his policy, how in the he11 can you argue that McCain is about change?  He has the same foreign policy, has the same tax plan, has the same domestic policy... the only place where he may have differed is environmental... but he even flip flopped on that (off shore drilling).  He talks about getting rid of lobbyiest in "WAR-SHINGTON"... yet his campaign is headed up by two of the biggest lobbyiest in DC.

Some of you people are so gullable it makes me wonder what in the heck we stand for anymore!  You have a guy (GWB) that "you" put into office that lies to you for 8 years-- his administration, dimes out a CIA agent-- and you're willing to put a guy that backed him over 90% of the time into office?  I mean, how stupid can Americans be?  The economy is going in the tank and you want to vote for a guy that has the same exact agenda...

all I can say is Whoa!  We are the greatest nation in the world, but boy do we have some stupid people that live in it!
Rose I agree with you, Obama/Biden have at least put their cards on the table about the issues facing this country.  If we Americans are to "stupid" to see the lies and fact that there is no McCain/Palin plan than I say we will live with severe dificulties and pain for 4 more years at the very least.  I will join you in Canada and those that vote McCain can stay here!!!

Suzanne, Western Ny
Obama (1st most liberal Dem) talked so  much about  change and then he goes and picks one of the old Washington boys (the 5th most liberal Dem)...where's the change?? Have these guys given us specifics about what actual changes they'll be making to fix out economy, the war, the foreclosure problem, immigration? Obama doesn't commit to anything, doesn't answer any questions head on...always a run-around.  Never a yes or no, always flip-flopping.
Tick, tock, tick, tock......TWELVE DAYS and counting without a SINGLE UNSCRIPTED WORD FROM SARAH!!! Tick, tock, tick, tock..... And does ANYONE think good ole softy Charlie Gibson is going to ask any TOUGH questions? Or that PART OF THEIR DEAL was that Sarah could not be asked any questions without being told AHEAD of time what the questions would be?? WHEN WILL PALIN PUT HERSELF BEFORE A LIVE PRESS CONFERENCE BEFORE MULTIPLE REPORTERS LIKE QUAYLE and FERRARO DID WITHIN TWO DAYS of their selection??? Tick, tock, tick, tock.... TWELVE DAYS and counting....

All talk - all NASTY talk!

Chicken Dick Cheney "loved" Palin's speech. And why not? It was vicious, partisan lies. What's not to love?

Good ol' Chicken Dick.
I have yet to hear mcbush or pcheney say the one thing that is the most important to me:
"You deserve the same health care as members of Congress".
I have heard Obama and Biden say this on several occassions.  So, what's up mcbush & pcheney- we not good enough for the same healthcare you guys receive?

No mcbush/no pcheney/ no more oil and insurance companies whores running my government please!
So far without any specifics, McCain-Palin can claim almost any policy that they think  will get them voted.  However, for example, unless they can come up with a health care policy that does more than tax health care benefits and takes the control out of the hands of health insurance and pharmaceutical companies, there is no way any increase in funding or support or medical research (stem call or otherwise) will ever be reality,  Just remember that these are for-profit companies that are traded on Wall Street and that answer to their shareholders, not the American people who need health care.  So just how is Sarah Palin proposing to help parents of special needs children?
During my dog walk this morning in Western Massachusetts - I spoke with TWO of my retired neighbors who asked me if I could keep my ears and eyes open for employment opportunities for them.  Both men have worked their entire lives and both men cannot afford to stay retired.  This economy situation is very very real and I hope the American people realize this.  This is a race about issues NOT about personality.  Obama/Biden in '08.
