'Lipstick' jungle

The McCain campaign is calling on Obama to apologize after he said these harmless remarks mocking Team McCain's call for change.

"John McCain says he’s about change too, and so I guess his whole angle is ‘Watch out George Bush -- except for economic policy, health-care policy, tax policy, education, policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove style politics -- we’re really going to shake things up in Washington,'" Obama said today at a town hall in Lebanon, VA.

He then added, "That's not change. That's just calling the same thing something different. But you know, you can ... put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change; it's still going to stink. After eight years, we've had enough of the same old thing. It's time to bring about real change to Washington."

Former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift, Chair of the newly found Palin Truth Squad, argued on a conference call sponsored by the campaign that Obama clearly directed the comment toward Palin. "It is clear to me, as I am sure it will be to fair minded Republicans, Democrats, and Independents across the country that Sen. Obama owes Gov Palin an apology," Swift said. Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella later added, “Barack Obama’s comments today are offensive and disgraceful. He owes Governor Palin an apology.”

But when you read Obama's quote above, it's pretty clear that the "lipstick" remark wasn't directed to Palin at all. And the Obama campaign fired back at what it called McCain's "increasingly dishonorable campaign."

“Enough is enough. The McCain campaign’s attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy -- the same analogy that Sen. McCain himself used about Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year," said Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn. "This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run.”

Indeed, as NBC's Carrie Dann points out, McCain himself used this phrasing during the primary campaign. On October 11, 2007, he criticized Hillary Clinton's healthcare plan after rolling out his own plan.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig," he said to the Des Moines Rotary Club when asked if he could put a price tag on Hillarycare, "but it's still a pig."

Still, that did not stop Swift from demanding Obama apologize to Palin over the comment -- and from linking this comment to others coming from the Obama campaign she calls sexist.

"As far as I know, she is the only one of four presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates who wears lipstick," Swift said when pressured to explain why she believes the comment was directed toward Palin. "It can be a very gendered comment. So it's both a gendered comment and there is only one woman in the race. And it's directly analogous to a comment she had made. So it is hard to think that anybody would see this as being directed to anybody but Gov Palin."

So, if Obama said that on Election Day, the "fat lady is going to sing on the Republican administration" that would be sexist too since a woman is mentioned in the analogy.  Brilliant!
You know, the McCain/Palin brigade just can't handle being treated the way they treat the Obama/Biden team.  It's just a case of the McCain Bully being given a dose of his own medicine, and the poor guy can't swallow it without raising a fit.

Obama/Biden '08
An apology?  I guess the "truth squad" is the only ones that could take that comment so far out of context to find it offensive.  This is patently ridiculous!

Will mccain apologize?  He actually did make that same comment directed toward clinton.  I guess he should step up and apologize because he did use it in an offensive context.
I used to have respect for John McCain.  Not anymore.  His campaign constantly plays games and makes mountains out of mole hills.  I don't understand why anyone would want to vote for someone who is so dishonest.
It was directed at McCain.  Drop it!
I think McCain has jumped the shark. Even the most committed Republican is going to recognize this approach is about to backfire.

Get a life lady....that was not directed to Gov Palin. This is stupid. If they are going to see shadows everywhere then they better start hiding under the covers.
This is getting ridiculous!

CAN THE MEDIA TAKE THEM TO TASK FOR THIS BS??????!!!!!!!
This isn't a "truth squad" --- this is an utterly-ridiculous-attack squad.  When McCain himself used the same (common) phrase directed at a plan proposed by another woman (who was also the only woman in the field)?   They are losing it, and in the process insulting all women who truly are equally intelligent and quite capable of  understanding an analogy, especially a very common one!  Good grief!  PLEASE tell me these people aren't going to be running our country.  Please...
Now you know why woman are running to vote for McCain. These cheap shots by Obama and his campaign staff are getting Olbermann-este. Inpendents know the score -15 point lead now for Obama. Keep it up Obama. Keep it up.
Again the Republicans trying to make a big election about small things.  One can then conclude that their campaign reflect their small minded approach and is an indication on how John McCain will run the country. Making a big deal out of small issues and ignoring the real and important issues.  Sounds familiar?  Just more of the same.
Here's my son's take on this whole mess, "If McCain
is using smoke and mirrors to win this election I want to know what he's smoking, and if its good for the country - pass the pipe."

This is NOT good for the country.  How much more surreal can it get?
These people are literally shameful.  The McCain campaign is unquesonably running a dishonerable comapaign.  Who are they fooling?  That's what happens when you don't have any issues to run on... you make stuff up.
This is a ridiculous subject to be discussing.  Here's a more important one:  I was appalled to see the photo of Sarah Palin on page 29 of this weeks edition of Newsweek magazine.  She is shown wrapped in an American Flag.  This is a most egregious treatment of our flag.  Whose idea was this, and why doesn't Sarah Palin (who hopes to be our next Vice President) not know this is disrespectful!  If she meant to show her patriotism, she was badly off the mark!
It was directed at McCain.  Drop it!

CArol Michigan (Sent Tuesday, September 09, 2008 9:55 PM)

So Mccain is the pig? I'm not seeing how this helps.
Oh give me a break.  The McCain campaign can run an ad with 2 blond white woman and Obama and say that  that's not racist, but humorous.  This is bs.  Swift was real forthcoming when Andrea Mitchell asked her about Palin's flip flow on the bridge to nowhere.  McCain, Rove and company are trying to insulate Palin from any criticism, and the way the mainstream media is timidly reporting on Palin it is working .  Folks watch the Republican attack machine at its worst in the coming months.  Karl Rove is back, and these people have no respect or dignity.
Again the Republicans trying to make a big election about small things.  One can then conclude that their campaign reflect their small minded approach and is an indication on how John McCain will run the country. when you can't talk about issues, i guess this is all you can do...

playing the sexism card, playing the playing the racism card, slandering and smearing with trumped up ads and divisive politics, i'm sorry but this McCain campaign is such a far cry from the straight talk express.

can't even stick with their slogans of country first and service, but had to make the republican's the party of change.  heard a radio interview in Omaha, Ne where the spokesman for the 10 year republican incumbent tried to use the change theme in conjunction with the congressional candidate.  The announcer laughed him off the air.  its a flat out joke.

The only thing that McCain has changed is himself, into a sorry shade of a man who avowed straight talk but can't follow through.

__________

Not only sexist, but a horrible slam on fat, er, zaftig people.
Obama knows about racism. So he knows that he's playing on the edges of sexism. The man comes from the gutter politics of Chicago, and it shows. Obama is not a leader, he acts like a blogger on the Huffington post.
FROM ONE SMALL-TOWN PERSON TO ANOTHER
Working from Home

Dear Governor Palin,

You amaze me. Hardly any of your stump protestations remotely resemble what we small-town residents believe in or care about. Listening to you, it's as if your human spirit and upbringing froze in the tundra of your little-town experience. We do not want a bulldog with lipstick! We want a leader who empathizes with our human condition, tells us the truth, and looks out for our best interests.

Our mills and factories have closed. Businesses are boarded up. Those fortunate enough to have health insurance can not find a doctor or dentist in the community anymore. We haven't the income to send our children to college. Record numbers of our neighbors now file for bankruptcy because of outrageous health-care expenses, losing their homes in the process; their American dream gone. Oil heating bills exceed property taxes.

Stories of our residents unselfishly helping those in need dominate the conversations around our town's pot-bellied stove. We organize, work together to solve problems in our small town. Yet, Mrs. Palin, you denigrate community organizing at every opportunity.

In our small-town, we balance the budget, making do with what we can afford. Occasionally we receive a few thousand federal dollars in grants, fixing the sewage treatment plant for instance. Yet Mrs. Palin, as mayor of your small-town, your employed the indicted Senator Ted Steven's 'man' and got 27 million dollars of federal money. As a professed reformer, you are a good politician when it comes to getting your hands on our tax dollars. Aren't you Mrs. Palin?

In our small town, we try to get along with everyone. We do not berate homosexuals or people of different races or religions publicly. Yet, you, Mrs. Paylin, publicly pray in your bible church to make gays straight and belittle those, even other Christians, who do not accept the bible as you so narrowly interpret it. In our small town, teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases happen with increasing tendency. We want and desperately need scientifically proven sex education in our community's schools for our children's sake. Yet, Mrs. Palin, you want abstinence-only education that does not work. We need science teachers in our community so our children can compete in this world. Yet, Mrs.Palin, you support creationism.

In our small town, we read the news of a complex world in turmoil, we want the leader of the free-world to be as educated as possible and possessing good judgment.
Mrs. Palin, you abused the governor's office for a personal vendetta. That is not good judgment Mrs. Palin. But do not worry, the cover-up is underway.

Just a generation ago, our small-town thrived, industry provided fair wages, health and retirement benefits. We could work hard and realize our dreams. We were the middle-class-backbone of the nation. Then the republicans, like you, took over Washington, singing the praises of small-government, cutting taxes for the rich and corporations and doing away with government regulations for selfish financial gains; rules that had protected us small-town citizens from the greed of the market-place since the Great Depression And all the while, like you, they attempted to impose socially conservative, right-wing, intrusive policies upon us.

In our small town, your word is your bond. Is your word your bond Mrs. Palin? Your republican, political, magician, Karl Rove, lied to us during the last two presidential elections as he and his minions are lying to us now. Why do you and Senator McCain lie with impunity? Do you think we small-town people are complete imbeciles? It's true that the lies and innuendo worked in the past two elections when too many of us small-town folks wanted to believe in the republican's delusional mantra of small government, no taxes, ETC. and helped vote your party into power.

Under this republican leadership with John McCain leading the charge, the White House propaganda machine whitewashed us into supporting the War with Iraq and our small town children answered the call and volunteered. Many have paid with their lives or incurred life-long injuries. We go to their funerals, do you Governor Palin?

The great American author and playwright, Thornton Wilder, captured life in a small town better than you and I ever will. I suggest you read "Our Town" Governor Palin, unless of course, it's on your "books to be banned list."

In the climatic scene of the play, Emily's spirit hovers over her grave site looking down on the mourners of the small town and says,

"They just don't get it, do they Mother Gibbs?"

Mother Gibbs replies,

"No dear they don't. Poets and saints maybe, some do!"

Sorry Governor Palin, but you just don't get it and the next time we pray, let's pray that our small-town voters do!
Gloves are off now Obama. Get ready for a storm.
...and she still wants to be treated like a lady all-the-while both candidates shamelessly lie and distort truth. You can plainly see what they are capable of and it DOESN'T LOOK LIKE CHANGE. It looks sickeningly like politics as usual. After viewing Palin regurgitating the same old LIES word for word and tone for tone, along with McCain's Sex-Education ad, you wonder at what point do they do more damage to themselves than the opposition ever could?

Obama/Biden: Change We Can CERTAINLY Believe In
I wonder how Michelle feels about all this? Anything for a win though, right Michelle? Even if it takes away what ever dignity you have left.
I grew up in a small farm town in Michigan. I have heard this saying a thousand times by men and women. I would think Gov. Swift would have a bit thicker skin and a sense of humor. By the way when did pigs get lips?
Barack Obama - Worst Person!!
Just perverse. Dishonerable.
Wow. Playing the gender card now? Nothing surprises me anymore. The sad thing is, America (the same America that voted for George Bush) is so stupid, that this will probably come back to bite Obama in the butt.
Oh Swift, cry me a effin river.

Why should he apologize, McCain has not apologized for screwing this country the last 20+ years, so now he wants ethics...well I say don't hold your breath!

These republicans are nuts, she called herself a pitbull, well hellloooo!  What next, go away republicans; life will be grand without most of you all!
Thank you for showing the full Obama quote in context. The McCain camp is shamelessly concocting controversy from a reasonable comment.
It's so funny how they care about women now ,they called Hillary every name in the book ,find a bridge to nowhere and get over it!!!
Meghan McCain suggested from her interview that her Dad wasn't too bright.  Sounds familiar?  Just more of the same
I loved the remark!  I've been using it for years in similar situations...  this woman has no credentials for being a heartbeat away from the presidency...

I will repeat, you can put lipstick on a 'Palin', but at the end of the day, it's still a 'Palin'...

Look at her record folks!  This is a female GWB! Ignorant...
Keith O's reputation has been on a downward spiral for a long time now. Every lie he speaks has barely 50% truth to it (The average Liberal has at least 80% truth to their lies). He hit his apex when he started backing up Rosie O’Donnell’s radical stories of 9/11 being orchestrated by the federal gov't. Both of their careers never recovered form that day on
He should have stayed away from that line. Especially since she used it in her speech. Obama is smarter than that. The republicans will use this well no matter how much MSNBC try's to deflate it. It wasn't smart at all. It was really stupid.
As the sun set over Lebanon High School in Western Virginia today, Deputy State Fire Marshall David Wyatt declared the gym at capacity with a crowd of 2400 inside. Earlier, Barack had filled the Ellis Soda Shoppe & Grill in Abingdon to its much smaller capacity on an unscheduled stop to talk to folks about the economy in Virginia and what can be done to help people there.

How low OBAMA Can go? Shame on BARACK.. Barack You are shame and no way CHANGE. Give away your nomination to Hillary & walk away for the good of the country.. OK you will not understand.. For your own good.
McCain and his campaign are schoolyard bullies who try to beat up on everyone but the minute they get punched back they go back whining back to mommy. Get over it. Obama has said nothing that is not true. It is old phrase that has been used pre-Palin. McCain has no ideas, policies, platform, or courage to take the country in the direction of change. It is rhetoric that he espouses on the campaign trail. Lies, lies, and lies.
McCain trying to make an issue of this is IDIOTIC.

This kind of distraction is an insult to American people whose homes are in foreclosure, who lack access to healthcare, whose children are in substandard schools, who have loved ones serving overseas... and even for the lucky ones NOT dealing with these, we deserve at least a SHRED of substance in our political dialog.

And it is insulting to every woman who has ever faced discrimination -- if the McCain campaign cared about discrimination, why did McCain vote against the Fair Pay act?

Let's talk about LILY LEDBETTER if we want to talk about discrimination. And McCain's despicable vote. I am so angry about this lipstick BS -- GET REAL AND STOP INSULTING WOMEN WITH THIS DISTRACTING NOTHINGNESS!

McShame: we got real issues to deal with!

Despicable.

The media need to get over their Palin-infatuation real fast, because they are losing focus, just like they did during Kerry swiftboating when they did no fact-checking or reporting beyond horse-race reporting. Shame.
Just like Obama said negative negative from the republicans.. when will this nation wake up to the Karl Rove antics.. we never talk about the middle class.
YES YES OF COURSE MSNBC AND CNN THEY ARE THE KINGS OF DIRTY POLITICS  NO WONDER OUT OF CONTROL KITH O MOTOR MOUTH CHRIS M ARE LUCKY THEY DIDN'T THEIR SORRY ASS'S KICK OUT OF THE STATION BIG SHOTS CIRCLE THEY DID HILLARY UNDER NOW ARE TRY FOR SARA PALIN SORRY IS WON'T WORK WE WOMEN ARE MAD AS HELL!!!!!!!!
Where is November 4th? I go something I need to do.
Palin is refers to herself as a pit bull with lipstick, and now McCain/Palin are using the song "Barracuda" at their rallies (though Heart has made it clear they do NOT support McCain/Palin). If you look up the word “hypocrisy” in the dictionary, you will see a photo of this duo.

As a side note, after eight years of Bush-speak, please people, don’t make us sit through McCain’s speeches and Palin’s shrill voice, please. Holy cow, I was just listening to Bush, and he's starting to sound good in comparison.
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
I've also heard that quite a few pigs were very offended. P.S. I'm making a list of Palin lies and looking for help in finding the biggest whoppers.
An apology for what?  The Republicans owe Obama an apology for crying sexism all the time.  I don't care if Obama was referring to Palin or the the McCain/Palin ticket in general I am a woman and I loved the line.  I think Palin's mouth is dripping with so much pork grease that it is a joke for her to say that she is against pork.  After some of the stuff that has come out of the McCain I could care less about Sarah Palin feeling offended by this comment.  This lady told Hillary to stop whinning and she should to. Next time Obama hit her once and hit McCain three times.
Obama was making a point that not everything is what people say it is. The Republics are claiming they are going for change but they are not. He is also correct in saying that their first claim was to experience now it is change...
Besides Palin referred to herself as a pitbull during her speech I don't see people upset that she referred to herself as a know vicious animal that can't fully be trusted even when trained.
Excuse me, Mr Murray.  Did you watch the footage of Obama's unfortunate quip before you wrote your biased article?  His audience (some standing to cheer) certainly appreciated his lipstick reference and he paused for their applause before continuing.

I do realize this is politics which does get ugly at times, but do your readers the honor of possessing at least a modicum of intelligence (if you can stretch that far) and admit that Obama just made himself appear immature.  He's more suited to recess with the other little taunting boys at this point than the presidency.
Obama is clearly losing it. His hand wringing and name calling, now referring to Governor Palin as a pig (ok, before you argue he didn't mean it that way, do you think he was referring to McCain wearing lipstick?). The house of cards, built by the media, is falling apart. In so doing, the nation is being saved from a young man with no savvy, experience, or understanding of what it takes to become an executive.
I grew up in a family in which all were democrats, not leftists! You people at MSNBC are leftists. The way I can tell is very simple. A group of us in college back in the 1950's came up with the following characteristic of liberals and leftists. You always talk like someone with a paper anus sitting on a timebomb.
I am so sick of these Rove tactics! The bottom line is that McCain has nothing to offer to the voters in this country! Anything to not have to deal with the REAL issues in this country. That's sad. And by the way , why can't Gov. Palin answer questions from the press. This amazes me. She is running for VICE PRESIDENT!!!! She can't talk to the media?? Can you say LIGHTWEIGHT???
