'Lipstick' jungle

The McCain campaign is calling on Obama to apologize after he said these harmless remarks mocking Team McCain's call for change.

"John McCain says he’s about change too, and so I guess his whole angle is ‘Watch out George Bush -- except for economic policy, health-care policy, tax policy, education, policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove style politics -- we’re really going to shake things up in Washington,'" Obama said today at a town hall in Lebanon, VA.

He then added, "That's not change. That's just calling the same thing something different. But you know, you can ... put lipstick on a pig; it's still a pig. You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change; it's still going to stink. After eight years, we've had enough of the same old thing. It's time to bring about real change to Washington."

Former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift, Chair of the newly found Palin Truth Squad, argued on a conference call sponsored by the campaign that Obama clearly directed the comment toward Palin. "It is clear to me, as I am sure it will be to fair minded Republicans, Democrats, and Independents across the country that Sen. Obama owes Gov Palin an apology," Swift said. Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella later added, “Barack Obama’s comments today are offensive and disgraceful. He owes Governor Palin an apology.”

But when you read Obama's quote above, it's pretty clear that the "lipstick" remark wasn't directed to Palin at all. And the Obama campaign fired back at what it called McCain's "increasingly dishonorable campaign."

“Enough is enough. The McCain campaign’s attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy -- the same analogy that Sen. McCain himself used about Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year," said Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn. "This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run.”

Indeed, as NBC's Carrie Dann points out, McCain himself used this phrasing during the primary campaign. On October 11, 2007, he criticized Hillary Clinton's healthcare plan after rolling out his own plan.

"I think they put some lipstick on a pig," he said to the Des Moines Rotary Club when asked if he could put a price tag on Hillarycare, "but it's still a pig."

Still, that did not stop Swift from demanding Obama apologize to Palin over the comment -- and from linking this comment to others coming from the Obama campaign she calls sexist.

"As far as I know, she is the only one of four presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates who wears lipstick," Swift said when pressured to explain why she believes the comment was directed toward Palin. "It can be a very gendered comment. So it's both a gendered comment and there is only one woman in the race. And it's directly analogous to a comment she had made. So it is hard to think that anybody would see this as being directed to anybody but Gov Palin."

I am truly sorry.

That there is anyone in America shallow enough to vote for John McCain, the over-the-hill crash test pilot and faux hero, just because of what one of Sarah's neighbors in the great metropolis of Wasilla, AK, calls the "babe factor."

Sorry indeed.
I am so dissapointed in how McCain/Palin are trying to defind their place.  I have watched many of Palin's speechs and am not impressed by any of them.  Okay so she is pretty but what does that have to do with the issues.  At least Hillary speaks with authority and intelligence.  Palin well I am not sure where she is going with this nonsense.  I am leaning even more so towards Obama and feel that he needs to just keep focused on what matters.  Get us out of this mess.!!
Did OBOMBER derail his campaign?? How could he be going to the twin towers tomorrow afet having cocktails at a domestic terrorists home...unreal...u whackos.
Hey Joe...does Amtrak even go to Alaska....your a real Washingon outsider...you...silly.
Sounds like Sarah is "whining". Typical Karl Rove tactics.  It appears that the republicans have nothing to say -- again -- politics as usual from their side.  Where's the change?  Hopefully people won't fall for this stuff -- again -- or our country will be in big trouble.
Because she wears lipstick this is about her?  Someone's a little conceited, don't ya think? Next the McCain camp will claim that supporting better schools is a slap at Palin's crappy education.  Or that improving healthcare is a slap at McCain's age and infirmities.

Or that investing in cures for birth defects is a slap at her kid.  Oh, wait, they already went there. . .
Palin quote:
"Explaining how she got her political start at the PTA level, Palin told the RNC crowd: "I was just your average hockey mom. I love those hockey moms, you know, they say, what is the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick."

I ask what the difference is here between what she said and what he said.  A tail?  A snout?

Give me a break!
Why does John McCain hate Sarah Palin so much that she thinks she's a pig?  I mean, Barack Obama didn't even mention Sarah Palin, but McCain automatically assumed that the pig comment was directed at Sarah.  Why would he do that if he didn't think that that was a way to describe her?  I mean, it's probably just a memory lapse to the time that he referred to Hillary Clinton that way in regards to her health care initiatives.  He meant to call a woman a pig by what he said, so he just assumes that Obama must have meant that, too.

What a silly old Sexist John McCain is!!!
There they go again. Once again the Republicans don't talk issues just act like hypocrites. No surprise. What is a surprise is they demand an apology for Palin when they were really talking about McCain. Guess he doesn't merit one and this confirms it really has become the Palin McCain ticket.
Oh my god. Poor fragile Palin. What happened to the Barracuda? "Lipstick on a pig" is a phrase as old as my Great Granny, and it's not a sexist remark. It's no more sexist than the phrase "the pot calling the kettle black" is racist. Once again we are confronted with the ignorance and cowardice of the GOP. The fact their their leader, John McCain, used the same phrase not so long ago proves that they are being hypocritical. It wasn't sexist when McCain said it, and it's not sexist now. They should get no apologies, and should instead apologize to US for trying to pull this stunt.
The only disgrace I see is John McCain who has bowed to the politics of dirt and not the straght talk express. His campaign is a disgrace to fair talk, to honorable politics. He shames the legacy of Lincoln
The McCain campaign is the sleeziest, slimiest bunch of liars, crooks, and practitioners of gutter politics I've ever seen.  And these cronies responsible for developing and crafting these attacks will be rewarded as appointees in a John McCain Administration.  Looks like Sarah Palin would fit right in with this crowd -- a pitbull with lipstick --dangerous and rabid.  Embarrassing to our country.
This is just another way to avoid talking about the critical issues that face this country.  Maybe someone should ask McCain to apologize to Hilary Clinton since he said the same thing to her.  I just don't get it.  Why aren't we asking all the candidates, not just the Democrats, to give us specifics as to how they are going to fix this country.  I am beginning t think that Palin is a hologram.....
Actually I don't believe Senator Obama does owe an apology. This pig puts her lipstick on....
When you have no new ideas you resort to lies. Not so much lying about your opponents but lying about yourself. Even though I would not vote for McCain at least I had respect for him. The operative word being "had". How low will this man go in order to fulfill his dream of being President? Country First my ass!
Come on First Read, you're one of the only news outlets that calls out McCain/Palin lies, distortions, and smears.  Let's call out the McCain's campaign for blatantly playing the gender card.
The media and those of us who want and demand the truth should not stand for McCain keeping this running mate behind his skirt.  Palin made the decision to join the national stage and she needs to be held to the same standards as all the other candidates have been held too.  Enough! Enough with all these claims of sexism.  If Palin wants to play in the big leagues, then she needs to take the hits just like everyone else.
OH WOW!! Honestly, team McCain needs to suck it up and take a punch. Senator Obama's remarks are totally fine, and McCain just can't handle the fact that his games are being played back at him. Please, Jane Swift, get a life and stop picking these pointless little fights. All is fair in love and politics.
Oops.  I'm sorry.  This must be the LIBERALS ONLY page.  Oh, no.  It's MSNBC.  Sorry, my unbiased CONSERVATIVE comments/opinions will not be shown here.  The obvious question is. . .not one of YOU can connect the "lipstick" remark to Palin's first speech??  Right.  There's no connection.  It was just an innocent remark by Obama.  Who are you people??  Nevermind.  The word desperate comes to mind.  We'll see in November.
So she as a woman wants equal everything that a man gets but when it is dished she crys sexism. HMMMMMM!!!
Can't take it get out of the Kitchen. Maybe it wasn't aimed at Sarah, she is really not the one running for President.
Obama don't you even consider this apology BS.  As a woman, a smart American and an Alaskan, this use of the sexist tag is OUT OF HAND and only a DISSERVICE to the advancement of women.  Sarah Palin can stand up for herself, for one thing.
FOR ANOTHER, McCain NEVER stood up to the lady who called Hillary a "b_ _h", he laughed. He didn't have a problem advertising his own wife for a topless contest, and what about him saying he was going to run an HONORABLE CAMPAIGN?
The latest ad from them is nothing short of character-attach garbage. You look desperate John, it's sad.
"Now you know why woman are running to vote for McCain. These cheap shots by Obama and his campaign staff are getting Olbermann-este. Inpendents know the score -15 point lead now for Obama. Keep it up Obama. Keep it up. " Poll Sitter

You're kidding right? This was in no way directed at Palin and if the so called Truth Squad had any real truth to put out about Palin they wouldn't need to resort to below the belt tatics such as these. Jane Swift is reaching. And as time goes on I can forsee them reaching even farther.

I do have one question. Why didn't they have a problem with the fish comment? It's ok to say Palin is a fish wrapped in paper but not a pig in lipstick? You can have it one way or the other or not both.

Let's talk about the real issues and stop hiding Palin from the media or having her regurgitate the same speechs over and over to the curious crowds that flow out to see her and McSame.

I think I'm just got to say, thanks, but no thanks to Gov. Sarah Palin. Hey Jane, I can't wait to see what you and your little Truth Squad come up with next.
Torie Clarke -- Ass't Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs from 2001 to 2003 (under Sec. Rumsfeld) and an advisor to Sen. McCain at the time of the Lincoln Savings & Loan scandal -- used "Lipstick on a Pig" (Free Press, 2006) as the title for her memoirs.
Give Obama a break.  You know how Muslims treat woman.  He was raised that way.
i guess he should have said "you can polish a turd and it's still a turd"?  please, mccain, find something substantive to whine about.  you are making all of us look silly.
He called her a pig. The pig is his devil. He won't eat ham at Easter. Don't vote in the sleeper cell.
Is Rachel M. really Keith O. in disguise?
McCain said THE EXACT SAME THING last year.  I swear to god the man thinks we are a nation of imbeciles.  Give it a rest, and give us a break.  And while you're at it, give us your VP candidate so we can find out who she really is.

"As far as I know, she is the only one of four presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates who wears lipstick," Swift said.

Yeah?  Well, as far as we know she is the only one of four presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates who

a)  has refused to answer a single question
b)  is unable to campaign alone
c)  cannot be further than 2 feet from her handlers
d)  picks her interviewer when she finally speaks
e)  is hiding behind her family and using them as distractions to keep the focus off the issues
f)  lives in a bubble, "no press allowed"

Here's another expression they won't like:  the american people will NOT buy a pig in a poke this time.  Yeah, that's what I said.  We won't buy a pig in a poke even if it IS wearing lipstick.

People are losing their jobs.  Their healthcare.  Their homes. Their LIVES.

Prove you care, McCain.  Prove you still have some honor.  Prove you put country first, not campaign.

Debate the issues that matter to the people.  Tell us what you're going to do for the people.

If Palin can't stand the heat, she needs to get out of the kitchen.  I am a woman, and I don't know a single woman who thinks she needs "protection" or thinks she should be treated with kid gloves.

You're a pitbull?  Prove it - meet the press - or get lost.
This is a direct result of our society being thoroughly uneducated.  Lipstick on a pig is a common expression.  People who do not understand that are simply stupid.  McCain surrogates are preying on that fact.
John McCain about a year ago talking about Hillary's healthcare plan:

I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig,” he said of her proposal.

But I suppose just like with the bridge to nowhere and the jet on ebay, they wont let the facts and the truth get in the way of their total BS. They think if they just repeat something enough times people will believe it......and there are a lot of suckers out there just eating it up.

Palin/McCain have taken lying and deciet to a whole new level in the past couple weeks.....even Bush doesnt compare anymore. I honestly would rather have another 4 years of Dick Cheney than Sara Palin

As tired as we are of hearing about Mccains POW record, America is just as tired of hearing this 90% agreement record that Mccain has with GWB. If I hear this one more time I'm going to ask for proof on all policy's he's agreed with and all policies he's dis agreed with. Without any concrete proof his 90% is just a made up # and therefore just another Obama lie.
This poor, pathetic little wiener went from a Goldwater wannabe to this laughable embarrasment he has become. If this country ever hopes to end this kind of politics, people need to wake up and send a final verdict to McPalin-we don't want any. If not, you have to live with the trash you elected.

After 8 years of this useless, moronic Fratboy, haven't you Repugs learned a single thing? If there is any justice left in America (VERY debateable) these 2 despicable creatures will be dropped into the nearest dumpster on Nov. 5.
What I want to ask Sarah Palin is if it is possible to "pray away the gay"
does she  think I can "Pray away the gray"  caused by the past eight years of Rove-engineered  politics.
