McCain: Mr. Straight Talk?

Posted: Friday, September 12, 2008 9:17 AM by Domenico Montanaro

If there’s a common theme today, it’s the press taking McCain’s campaign to task for running a series of ads distorting Obama’s record and positions.

AP's Babington writes, "Even in a political culture accustomed to truth-stretching, McCain's skirting of facts has stood out this week. It has infuriated and flustered Obama's campaign, and campaign pros are watching to see how much voters disregard news reports noting factual holes in the claims. McCain's persistence in pushing dubious claims is all the more notable because many political insiders consider him one of the greatest living victims of underhanded campaigning. Locked in a tight race with George W. Bush for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, McCain was rocked in South Carolina by a whisper campaign claiming he had fathered an illegitimate black child and was mentally unstable."

The Los Angeles Times’ Rainey: "News organizations and these admirable truth-squadding outfits, including PolitiFact.com, do not collaborate. But in independent news reports and commentaries this week, they seemed to reach a consensus to say ‘enough’ to the McCain camp's efforts to demonize Barack Obama. I'm not saying that Obama hasn't told a few whoppers -- like suggesting McCain's proposed corporate tax breaks are tailored specifically for oil companies or that his opponent seriously believes anyone making under $5 million is middle-class. But it's McCain and his foot soldiers who have really fouled the election airwaves in recent days, provoking the first flickerings of a backlash from the media."

Paul Krugman also gets into the act. “But I can’t think of any precedent, at least in America, for the blizzard of lies since the Republican convention. The Bush campaign’s lies in 2000 were artful -- you needed some grasp of arithmetic to realize that you were being conned. This year, however, the McCain campaign keeps making assertions that anyone with an Internet connection can disprove in a minute, and repeating these assertions over and over again.”

The Washington Post does a deeper dive into the story of Cindy McCain's addiction. "In describing her struggle with drugs, McCain has said that she became addicted to Vicodin and Percocet in early 1989 after rupturing two disks and having back surgery. She has said she hid her addiction from her husband, Sen. John McCain, and stopped taking the painkillers in 1992 after her parents confronted her. She has not discussed what kind of treatment she received for her addiction, but she has made clear that she believes she has put her problems behind her.”

“While McCain's accounts have captured the pain of her addiction, her journey through this personal crisis is a more complicated story than she has described, and it had more consequences for her and those around her than she has acknowledged. Her misuse of painkillers prompted an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and local prosecutors that put her in legal jeopardy. A doctor with McCain's medical charity who supplied her with prescriptions for the drugs lost his license and never practiced again. The charity, the American Voluntary Medical Team, eventually had to be closed in the wake of the controversy. Her husband was forced to admit publicly that he was absent much of the time she was having problems and was not aware of them."

Writes CBN's Brody, “The Brody File has learned that the offer of a short video from vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin to folks at this weekend’s Value Voters Summit has been turned down by its president, Tony Perkins. A source inside John McCain’s campaign tells me that Palin was set to record the video Wednesday in Virginia before she left for Alaska. But when the McCain campaign approached Perkins about offering the video rather than a personal appearance Perkins said, according to numerous witnesses, ‘That’s not enough.’”

The Brody File contacted Tony Perkins and he told us: “Values voters have been excited by the pro-family and pro-life content of the 2008 GOP platform. It is a model we want to see all parties embrace. The excitement over Gov. Sarah Palin has spread across the country and is undiminished. As this hectic campaign got underway, we renewed our invitations to the major party tickets to address our Summit for 20 minutes each. That standard format was done to ensure fairness and to spare us another round of intrusive IRS inquiries regarding favoritism toward any candidate or party. Though we prevailed against an unwarranted complaint last year, winning an all-clear from the IRS cost us thousands in legal fees and staff time. Accepting any video from one campaign would have violated a proven format and exposed us to a complaint that all the candidates did not receive this option. We expect to have a tremendous event the next two days.”

Bravo for the Press!!! clap*clap* It's about time the did their did job and not stand by parroting campaign slogans and spins and eating popcorn.
It's the Republicon way...tell a lie.... repeat ad nauseum.  A lie repeated enough times become the truth in their minds.
This year, however, the McCain campaign keeps making assertions that anyone with an Internet connection can disprove in a minute, and repeating these assertions over and over again.”

If he knew how to use the internet he may see how ridiculous he's being.
Liberals commenting on conservatives messages. Now that's funny. Any comment from these same liberals on Obama's distorted message of McCain voting "90%" in favor of Bush's agenda?

Liberals certainly are the defintion of "Washington Insiders"
Liberals "hammer" Republicans. Republicans "distort" Liberals messages. The press in this country have drunk the Liberal kool-aide.
You've got the NY Times, the LA Times, and the Washington Post being critical of the Republican McCain? And this is somehow viewed as a surprise to you.
Gosh, what a surprise!  Everyone is finally onto the fact that John Mcslime tells lies, distorts facts and twists truth.  What a revelation...NOT!!
It's about time that the MSM starts doing it's job of keeping the American people informed and not misinformed.
And McCain is blaming Obama for the negative tone of the campaign.  McCain needs to take responsibility and accountability for his actions.  Will he avoid taking accountability for his actions as president - maybe just state, I was a POW.
Uh hello...this has been the Republican way of winning elections since 1968.

I am shocked that anyone else is shocked that Palin-Mccain would act any different...

It is the Democrats problem that they cant seem to get down and dirty with them...let me help

Neither the mccain or palin families seem to be prime examples of most peoples family values and the dems should be dogging them daily on it...they put them out there and its fair game

Mccain has made his service and POW status a central theme of every speech or commercial...its fair game...nail him dems

Mccain and Palin have both stated they are for more wars...the dems should run the "daisy" commerical agains using mccain rather than goldwater...something about that arizona sun
"Her misuse of painkillers prompted an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and local prosecutors that put her in legal jeopardy."

Had this woman simply been an "ordinary American", and not the wife of a U.S. Senator, she would be doing serious jail time.  Republicans think that the laws are "only for the little people."  Sarah Palin shares this "worldview" with the McCains 100%.  It's OUR nation, not their personal playground.
McCain is a basic slimy republican who will tell lie after lie as long as it helps him win.  After Bush we can't afford another president who will continually lie to the American people.
Swing away Barak, the repub target is getting bigger everyday.
About time McCain gets called on his behavior.  It is clear that Karl Rove is driving the bus.

I have no respect for either John or Cindy McCain.
George Bush put America in the toilet.

John McCain is ready to flush.
Why isn't McCain down in Texas overseeing the hurricane preparations like he was during the republican convention?

Oh that's right... it isn't politically expedient for him to be there.
McCain talks out of both sides of his mouth, he lies and lies and lies...FactCheck.org and others like it, constantly prove this, showing most of his statements are false. Yet, AMericans will believe him anyway, because McCain won the most important race - the perception race, and this means Obama's chances of winning the election race, is slim to none.
Gee Tony - if you're looking for sympathy because the IRS questioned your outright biased politics, you aren't getting any from me.
As a taxpayer that can't deduct my political donations while your organization pays no taxes I say too bad!
The Washington Post, in its efforts to help Barack Obama win this election, is really scraping the bottom of the barrel.  Cindy McCain's addiction to prescription pain killers is a tragic episode IN HER PAST, and has nothing to do with this election.

What IS germaine to this race is Obama's plagiarism of one of its own cartoonist's words last week.  It has been noticably silent on that episode.

Media bias has and will continue to be blatently obvious to the voting public, but it is particularly egregious this election cycle.

If, heaven forfend, you do manage to get this unprepared, inexperienced egghead elected, you can count on a republican takeover of both house of congress in the off-year elections.

If we actually survive his first two years in office.  There is a reason Hamas endorsed him;  because he is weak, and lives in an alternate universe.  He sees what he want to see, and distorts reality to fit with his ivory tower visions.

Our enemies do not.
Finally a great First Read article decrying the many lies of "Bush Hugger" McCain and the repugnant ones.  I'm so glad that the MSM, especially MSNBC, is waking up and reporting the facts that the repugnant ones were lying repeatedy during the RNC Freak Show.  About time that the MSM catches up to Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert and Bill Maher on spreading the truth.

The party of gutter politics needs to be left in the gutter come November 4th and hopefully now I sense hope that the MSM is finally coming to it's senses and will now start reporting the many lies of the Dumb and Dumber ticket.  Just love the article on "Pill Popper" Cindy McCain!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Its about time the MSM stop drinking the McCain kool-aid and call them on their lies.  We need to call them LIES, not mistruths.   They are liars...this is change I don't believe in.
It is such a shame to see that the adjective DISHONORABLE can be used to describe John McCain.  It shows how far he truly has fallen in his attempt to gain the Presidency.

We Americans always say we hate dirty politics.  Now it's time to truly show that by voting accordingly.  If our soldiers can stand up & do their duty in Iraq, steadfastly for months on end, the least we can do is not get distracted by the lies & spin that the McCain campaign has been circulating.

If you want to vote for McCain based on his policies, (economic, international, etc..) fine but don't vote for him because you like or feel sorry for Sarah Palin, think Barack Obama has ties to Islamic Terrorists (my neighbor actually told me this one with a straight face), or any other type of stupid personal reason.  We did that in 2000 & 2004 & we got GEORGE BUSH.
Obama will lose, he has not learned to lie so blatantly.
What do you mean when you say straight talk. That has to be confussed with the truth.See the truth is that the repubs have Roved a new type of un-truth.Where everything is spin ,lie, slime, distort, scare, pander, con, distort records, mainly theres, while calling this change. The only un- change that has been seen is that they are trying to run a campaign on this platform. No change from the last Roved election. You call his lie squad his footsoldiers,I have seen most ,and the things they say are all talking points that they are told to saynot a won of them has any interst in the truth.See the truth is that the Bush admin, has plated us,played us on the war, played us on the ecnomony, played us oil prices, thrown the constuition out the constuition out the window, and plays by there  rules somehow thinking that no one would notice. Not this time,I no the crowd that you are playing to are not the informed. So now that the bomber group is being called out will they stop? When its all you got,I have my doubts
McCain talks straight and shoots straight, even from the hip. Libby's "might" understand the wisdom of this when he becomes president, unless they live in Tinseltown.
In between McCain's bovine excrement and Palin's uneven performance last night, I hope America's paying attention.  These people are like 7-Up - never had it, never will.
I am appalled at the level of distortion and outright LIES in McCain's ads. He should be ashamed.

Straight talk? Straight BS.

How would I be able to trust this man as President if he has to lie to me in order to convince me to vote for him?????

WAKE UP AMERICA!
I'm glad the media is getting all over the lies.  However, now the Republicans will holler foul, again.
I am having a difficult time finding nonbiased news to watch.  I have stopped watching Morning Joe.

Now, isn't it nice that the McCain family can get healthcare, and drugs to abuse, but we, the people cannot afford healthcare, and many of us are one illness away from bankruptcy?

Judy in AZ
Don't be conned by the RepubliCONS. Palin lies are flying like there is no tomorrow. But she has dug herself in the hole with her lies. Bridge to nowhere, Troopergate, Billing the treasury for staying at home, firing her chef to save us money, being against lobbyist. The list goes on and Mr McSame (the self proclaimed Maverick and Johny come lately agent of Change) stands their and claps as if he has found an angel on whose wings he will ride to the presidency. We are not done with Mrs Failing she will more lies and remain sequestered as if she is in quarantine and keep complaining that everyone is being sexist. It is the same horse and Pony show the RepubliCONS are so good at. We have heard these sob stories before!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no such thing as the liberal media unless you are talking about alternative news - conservatives also have 'alternative news', especially the very right wing.

Conservatives who just keep touting the worn out phrase 'liberal media' are out of touch. I assume they would claim Fox news is unbiased and not the 'conservative media.' It's a joke folks. Liberals are laughing at you and your worn out mantras. There is no liberal media.
"McCain's persistence in pushing dubious claims is all the more notable because many political insiders consider him one of the greatest living victims of underhanded campaigning." it has become apparent to all but the msm john mccain, of john mccain does not speak for the campaign (read this - this campaign is not john mccains), is nothing more than a figurehead this time around in this campaign. (which is not nor is he candidate 2000.)karl rove is the wizard behind the curtain and ms. palin is the pea in the shell game.
I expect the new message will be why is the media attacking Cindy.  Never mind that, like Palin's familiy values, she made the addiction issue relevant by constantly using it as a crutch in interviews.

Plus, the addiction isn't really the issue.  Lots of people fall down in their personal life.  Not a lot of people get prescriptions forged, divert goods from charities they control, get busted by the DEA and wind up without having to even do a perp walk, much less hard time.  Falsifying federal forms, diverting donations and using people's names on prescriptions without their knowledge is a whole lot more serious than getting popped with some crack because you are a junky.  Yet the junky will go to jail, and Cindy gets off without a court appearance (instead of a 20 year sentence) because she hired a powerful attorney and has a powerful husband who know the ins and outs of the system.  Even if her treatment was not improper, it certainly wasn't typical of the DEA to be so lenient in the midst of the Reagan-Bush "War on Drugs."  As a final F-U to the poor who were targeted by that "war" her getting off with community service was in no small part because she could pay the cops back for their investigation and could afford private treatment (totally unclear if she ever actually did it, by the way).  So the rich really do have their own law.

Yep, the McCain's are just normal, hard-working Americans.  Not elitist in any way.

If a claim can not be checked as truth, PULL IT, REFUSE TO RUN IT!!
We need the truth coming out, not lies, what has this COUNTRY become, What have WE become?
There is no changing the minds of the base of either party....this election will be won from the middle.  Moderates and more importantly Independants.  Any person not affiliated with either party has the clear view....and the view seems to be on Obama's side.  At least he has some detailed positions.  Smears won't do it this time around.  ENOUGH with the lies.  We all want policy discussions, and thats only coming from one campaign.
AMERICA,I'M a disabled veteran who servered this country.I lost the use of my arms during the first "GULF WAR".To some people I'm considered hero, but niether MCcain nor myself are.The real hero give and gave the ultimate sacrifice"death on the battlefield".So you owe MCcain nothing "more or less than your gratitude. You donot  owe him your VOTE.We all know and knew of the possible dangers that go along with war.

It's not just during the campaign -- McCain has been lying for a long time... check out the link.
In baseball they put up a big scoreboard to keep track of score, how about a scoreboard to keep track of the lies. In this case we have 7 weeks (innings) to keep track of. Post week by week the score in lies, distortions, deceptions, and half truths. This would be fair for both sides and easy to read, I'm an Obama fan, I think we would win this game with a lower score. (maybe golf would fit better- low score wins)
How about this McCain fans? Up for this game?
we keep hearing about the middle class what about the lower class. 70% of this country make less than $40,000 a year.
