Wheels come off Straight Talk Express?

Posted: Saturday, September 13, 2008 6:33 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
For a candidate who prides himself in "straight talk" -- and whose political image in part is based on that truth-telling reputation -- Saturday proved to be a brutal day for John McCain and his campaign.

First came a front-page New York Times piece noting that McCain "has drawn an avalanche of criticism this week from Democrats, independent groups and even some Republicans for regularly stretching the truth." There was also an accompanying fact-check of McCain's latest TV ad, which called it the "latest in a number that resort to a dubious disregard for the facts."

The Washington Post gave "four Pinnochios" to McCain's recent assertion on "The View" that Palin never took earmarks as Alaska governor. Then the Boston Globe reported that Palin didn't really travel inside Iraq as has been claimed. And Bloomberg News said that the McCain camp may not have been exactly truthful in estimating the size of its recent crowds. "Now officials say they can't substantiate the figures McCain's aides are claiming."

To top it off, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said this to the Politico about the increased media scrutiny of the campaign's factual claims: "We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”

Not surprisingly, the Obama camp has pounced on all this, issuing a memo to reporters entitled "Unraveling the myth of the Straight Talk Express." The memo argues, "Since naming Governor Palin as their vice presidential nominee, the McCain campaign has distorted, distracted, and outright lied to the American people about her record in a desperate attempt to hide the fact that a McCain/Palin Administration would be nothing more than a continuation of the failed Bush policies of the last eight years."

And it concludes, "While the media is slowly starting to call the McCain campaign on their dishonest tactics, McCain’s staff boasts that they don’t care. As a McCain spokesman told the Politico, 'We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.'"

Re: Unraveling the myth of the Straight Talk Express

Since naming Governor Palin as their Vice Presidential nominee, the McCain campaign has distorted, distracted, and outright lied to the American people about her record in a desperate attempt to hide the fact that a McCain/Palin Administration would be nothing more than a continuation of the failed Bush policies of the last eight years.

Indeed, today alone we learned that the McCain campaign’s claim that Governor Palin traveled to Iraq is a lie. In fact, she didn’t cross the Kuwait border. We learned that the McCain campaign is desperate enough to tell the press phony crowd numbers, which they falsely attributed to local elected officials and the United States Secret Service.  And we learned that despite Senator McCain’s claim that Governor Palin is a fiscal conservative, spending actually increased during her brief tenure as Governor.

Here are the facts. Governor Palin supported the Bridge to Nowhere, requested hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks, never visited Iraq, increased spending as governor, increased taxes as governor, and was about as successful selling that luxury jet on eBay as the McCain campaign has been selling her reputation as a reformer. Oh yeah, and the gas pipeline she touts won’t be usable for at least a decade, if it’s completed at all.

While the media is slowly starting to call the McCain campaign on their dishonest tactics, McCain’s staff boasts that they don’t care. As a McCain spokesman told the Politico, “We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”

"Thou shall know the Truth and the truth shall set you free" Jesus Christ. Sad that many believers buy the Republican lies, without regard to biblical implication to these type of leaders in their present lives nor lives to come.
Alright, MSM, you heard it directly from the McCain campaign.  They are ready and willing to lie, lie, lie unless you make debunk everyone of those lies as FRONT PAGE NEWS.  Stop burying it in these columns and lets see it on the front page of msnbc.com.

Senator Obama, we need you to shout this from the rooftops, not just issue gentle little press releases.  You don't have to get down into the gutter to hit back at these scumbags, but you do have to hit back harder on the truth!

Enough.  Eight years of lies was too much.  I can't take any more, and neither can this country.
I am proud of the Obama/Biden Ticket.  The Obama Campaign is awesome!!!!!!!!

Obama/Biden
2008/2012
You forgot to mention all of the per diem she claimed because she wanted to live in her home in Wasilla, instead of the house provided by the state.

It costs the state of Alaska $356,500.00 annually to maintain and staff the Governor’s Mansion in Juneau. That is where the governor of Alaska is supposed to live while serving their term. The State Capitol, and legislature, is about a hundred yards down the street. Governor Palin prefers to live at home in Wasilla, over 600 miles away, and collect per diem, while the state continues to pour the money into the empty Governor’s Mansion in Juneau. That is not efficient or ethical.

When McCain's boy said 'they were running a campaign to win and didn't care what the media thought', it may have been the first time that the Palin-McCain crew 'didn't' lie all month.
The Mccain camp talk all about god. God is truth and light. I am looking for both the truth and the light in what they are saying.  correct me fellow christians if I am wrong but is lie not a sin.

The scripture talks about using the Lord'a houe as a market place. For those who profess god's will, STOP.
I would like to add one more issue.  Alaska is number 1 in violence against women.  What has Gov. Palin done to help?  There's some flap about rape kits being available to rape victims in Wasilla.

95% of the memo is missing.  The (full) memo is here:

Lying to the people.  Now, lets see, who used to that? Oh yeah, that was BUSH!!!  Reform yourselves Mr. McSame!
They are now exposing that old liar !!!!!
If every talk show doesn't lead with this after the IKE crisis then the news media will have totally lost any credibility.  It is incredulous that McCain would insist on the view that he is proud of lying commercials and that his campaign would say they don't care that winning is all that matters.  Forget is Palin ready, is McCain ready or has he lost it completely?
We the voters knew about the lies, distortions,
dishonor of the Mccain/palin campaign.
It has taken the media much too much time to
start paying attention.
Is it because of the public, bloggers outrage
over their lack of fairness??
Now let's see those Palin tax returns.  I'm willing to bet she never paid taxes on all that per diem money she received for living in her own house!
This should be the lead, above the fold story of every  news outlet tomorrow. Any bets out there that it is?
You are now seeing the real John McCain,McCain admitted that the first time he ran for this office it was all about power, and it still is.Let no ome fool you after reading many of McCain remarks and his position on the Mid-East and Georgia one can only come to the conclusion that John McCain is the most dangerous man on earth, far to dangerous to hold the job he seeks for when he spoke of a 100 year war he was not joking in the least and he wouldn't care who he started a war with.Regardless of who you vote for Obama, third party, etc make sure its not John McCain....
Finally, the McCain/Palin ticket is being called out for the fraud and liars that they are. McCain flat out lied on The View -even when confronted.

This has to stop. The media and the OBAMA/BIDEN campaign need to come down hard on McCain/Palin.

These people are a continuation of the Bush/Cheney lies and horrible government that we have suffered under for 8 years. They are liars and cheats and should be punished. They should be put in jail.

Skum, skum, and more skum.

As OBAMA said - "Do they think the American people are stupid?" Wake up America and fight back!

Take back America and vote for OBAMA/BIDEN.

I am Lisa Capozzoli and I approve this message.
Go Obama!

I heard Obama say that if they continue to tell lies on him that he'll start telling the truth on them!  Shut McSame and Pottymouth Palin down.

The truth shall set you free and take you to the Whitehouse!

John McCain/Sarah Palin

Perfect candidates to carry on the mantle of the GOP. Just lie, exploit the religious right, exploit hard working blue collar citizens, blame the media, blame the elitists, accuse your opponent of not being patriotic enough, accuse your opponent of taxing us to death, exploit your war experiences, use the fear card, don't support Jim Webb's GI Bill.
It is about time.  Now, if this would just get out to John Q Public, it would be good.  It really must get out to the public and quickly.
There is absolutely nothing about domestic American society ( Bush reference – “They hate our freedom” ) that would or could ever explain why America has accumulated more adversaries than we can ever build of finance sufficient military capability to counter. Our crisis is due rather to the arrogant, conquest-oriented international policies of politicians like Bush-Chaney-McCain-Palin.

Change is not a mere option. It is a requirement of our survival.
At last...........

Bob, Chicago
McCain and Palin are both liars and bullys who take their toys and go home when they are challenged on their lies, exagerations and distortions. Please don't back down for them you are our only carriers of the truth.  What on earth has happended to the john McCain we used to know?
I have been a registered republican in phoenix for 30 years.. This is the first time I won't be voting for The man who knocked on my door so many years ago... John McCain is not the man he used to be... He now is not honest and a L!@R... I will be happy to vote for Obama.. John McCain what have you become... You sir are not a man who's word can't be trusted...
President Bush played fast and loose with the facts and deliberately mislead the American public with regard to his justification for invading Iraq.  Now the McCain campaign is showing an equal disregard for ethical communications with the public.  Obama needs to tie these two facts together and TRY to get the attention of the press and the voting public.  Too many, apparently, are simply willing to suspend intelligent skepticism.

Did the New York times have the story about McCains affair again too?

Lets face it, the NY Times is as credible as the National Enquirer . . ., wait a minute, that's not right . . .
I hope to god that the media keeps vetting and pointing out these lies and the tactics that McCain is using. This is Bush/Rove all over again and has nearly destroyed the United States reputation. I am ashamed of McCain and Palin and to American's don't let this happen to us again.
I agree with Josh Marshall. At what point do people start noticing that John McCain is showing he is morally corrupt? Lying blatantly, to smear (bear false witness against) your neighbor, is a moral issue. McCain's gone to the Dark Side, folks.
I love it, finnally the media is uncovering the lies that are consistently coming out to "win whatever it takes" tactics, I hope voters are not too slow to see this, and I congradulate MSNBC for finally saying what the Obama campainers have been saying for weeks
Have the New York Times moved into the Obama campaign headquarters now? Is there enough room, you know, with the NBC crowd in there all ready?
Th McCain of 2000 is not the McCain of today - sad but true.
Hard to tell the Obama press releases from the newspaper articles. Written by the same people perhaps?
I am so glad, and proud that the media is exposing is exposing the Lying Express.

Complete arrogance to admit that the campaign is lying, caught at it, and still they do NOT care!

Imagine if this media scrutiny had been used 4 or 8 years ago?!

Barbara Walters is extremely jealous of Sarah Palin's success and it shows.

That was evident as she and Joy Behar, who appears to be politically and even mentally challenged, grilled Senator McCain for the duration of his appearance on "The View." Behar could be poster-gal for liberal asylums everywhere.

McCain did a great job showing restraint to some of the idiotic questions and wrongful assumptions levelled at the Senator. The senator was too nice and should have put Walters and Behar in their place.

Palin has been a role model in every aspect of her personal and professional life. She has, almost single-handedly, brought the Obama campaign to it's knees, and that's what the abusive verbal attacks upon her are all about.

Walters and Behar slobbered all over both Barack and Michelle Obama when they were guests, and I mean SLOBBERED. A little fair play is in order here but Walters and Behar are bias to the bone.

Probably the attack on Palin and McCain is also publicity-oriented to be fed to other media outlets.

Leni,Michigan (Sent Saturday, September 13, 2008 7:03 PM)
It's Saturday, time to change your underwear.
First, McCain lied about the integrity of his military service during an unpopular and ill-conceived war. ( the only truth was being a POW)  Then he lied about his involvement in a scandal (Keating 5) that wound up costing the US taxpayers billions of dollars while his wife was investing in a shopping mall with Charles Keating. Now he has lied about properly vetting a woman to be VP while he left far more qualified female candidates on the sidelines.  Even Chairlie Gibson did a better job of vetting than McCain!

Now the campaign lies are piling up so quickly that even the docile MSM has gotten into the act of holding him accountable.  The Sarah Palin scandals have gone beyond being a "drip-drip" into a flooding torrent that is close to submerging the "Straignt Talk Express."

The McCain Campaign strategy is glareingly obvious; tell as many lies as possible in hopes that two things will happen. (by time the MSM picks up on and publishes the lies, the subject will have changed and that the voting electorate is so stupid that you can get away with saying anything).

I used to think that Sarah Palin would eventually break down in tears and quit the campaign to go "take care of her family."  But I now realize that she is far too cynical and flat out dumb to do what is right.
Would that all politicians were made to take an oath to "tell the truth and nothing but the truth", and if caught in lies be charged with perjury.

Obama/Biden 'o8!
In a way, I feel sorry for McCain. He used to be so different, and I would have considered voting for him 8 years ago if the Dems had run a really poor candidate. But now, he's lost his way, sold his soul to Bush, Rove and the far religious right. What happened, John McCain?
I think it's a sad commentary on Senator McCain that he is willing to relinquish his integrity to win at any cost - that he allows the people around him to blatantly lie with his permission.  What is even more tragic, however, are those many many persons who are willing to accept the lie, to repeat it as truth without logically or critically thinking about.  It appears that these persons are willing to vote against their own best interests, and that really frightens me.
Oh Please, Is that all ya got?
Obama voted present and so did Pontius Pilate.  No core foundation.  Empty suit.
Bush/McCain/Palin are all phony.

FOOL ME ONCE SHAME ON YOU, FOOL ME TWICE, SHAME ON ME.
What a joke.. you think this makes any difference.  Mccain is playing press perfectly like a fiddle, and the funny but serious part is he will get away with it.
Good gawd full moon and Hunter Thomas...the fact remains...McCain and Palin are outright liars...what part of them lying to the American people dont you understand????????  Whats wrong...you dont like your lying candidate getting called on it finally.  Get your head out of your a@@...look what they are doing to win and repeat the same ole Rove-Bush tactics.  And Karl Rove is the worst kind of slime imaginable...right down to having the governor of Alabama incarcerated by lying thru his teeth.  This man should be banned from being anywhere near Washington.  And as far as you women voters who think this Palin is the greatest thing ever (mainly because she is a woman) you need to get your act together too and see her for what she really is...she doesnt give two bits for your rights like hillary did...she is in it for the power.
Oh and I loved the one that Barbara Walters is extremely jealous of Palin....hahahahahah are you nuts??????  What does she have to be jealous of...Barbara Walters is a proven journalist in this country and thats more than Miss Klondike ever was.
"Palin has been a role model in every aspect of her personal and professional life. She has, almost single-handedly, brought the Obama campaign to it's knees, and that's what the abusive verbal attacks upon her are all about. " - above poster
*****************

You see her as a role model?? Lord, help us all.

Please, MSM, stay on these liars! (If you guys had done this much work on the weapons of mass destruction search, we would not have started an unjust WAR against Iraq.)Keep it coming!  They are a disgrace to everything American. EVERYTHING.

I'm amazed that some repubs have the nerve to come into this forum and defend their piece of !@#$% candidates! I used to be a GOP backer myself until Dubya came along. McCain and his dishonest VP choice make me sick. They are no better than Bush..maybe even worse. The Original Liars need to be exposed for who they are from now until election day. Media do your damn jobs!
Actually, I think Whoopi Goldberg did the most to point out that the wheels may not be completely round on the "Straight Talk Express."  Every time I hear the phrase "original intent" things like slavery, women being denied the right to vote, come to mind.  What the less than stellar candidates mean by "original intent" is to have the world be the way THEY want it to be, particularly with regard to legislating peoples' private lives.

And Full Moon:  thanks for my laugh of the day.  Really, I can hardly type this without giggling.  Palin is role model?  Of what?  Poor ethics, inability to tell the truth, intellectually challenged, no knowledge of her country or foreign policy?  A Beauty contest winner (and really folks, what were they thinking of with her coming in second?  Were there only two contestants?)

Not someone I want MY daughters emulating.  But then, you do sign yourself Full Moon, and we all know what the moon can do to reason.
Full Moon (Sent Saturday, September 13, 2008 7:12 PM)"Barbara Walters is extremely jealous of Sarah Palin's success and it shows."

That has go to be the best one I have heard all day!  Wow, now if any female journalists ask any questions about Sarah Palin that perhaps challege her.....they are "jealous"?

Yes, Barbara Walters certainly has a lot to be jealous about.....you know, her career has just gone nowhere.....come on now, honestly!

He should have put Walters and Behar "in their place"....please enlighten us.....what place would that be?
