Wheels come off Straight Talk Express?

Posted: Saturday, September 13, 2008 6:33 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
For a candidate who prides himself in "straight talk" -- and whose political image in part is based on that truth-telling reputation -- Saturday proved to be a brutal day for John McCain and his campaign.

First came a front-page New York Times piece noting that McCain "has drawn an avalanche of criticism this week from Democrats, independent groups and even some Republicans for regularly stretching the truth." There was also an accompanying fact-check of McCain's latest TV ad, which called it the "latest in a number that resort to a dubious disregard for the facts."

The Washington Post gave "four Pinnochios" to McCain's recent assertion on "The View" that Palin never took earmarks as Alaska governor. Then the Boston Globe reported that Palin didn't really travel inside Iraq as has been claimed. And Bloomberg News said that the McCain camp may not have been exactly truthful in estimating the size of its recent crowds. "Now officials say they can't substantiate the figures McCain's aides are claiming."

To top it off, McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said this to the Politico about the increased media scrutiny of the campaign's factual claims: "We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”

Not surprisingly, the Obama camp has pounced on all this, issuing a memo to reporters entitled "Unraveling the myth of the Straight Talk Express." The memo argues, "Since naming Governor Palin as their vice presidential nominee, the McCain campaign has distorted, distracted, and outright lied to the American people about her record in a desperate attempt to hide the fact that a McCain/Palin Administration would be nothing more than a continuation of the failed Bush policies of the last eight years."

And it concludes, "While the media is slowly starting to call the McCain campaign on their dishonest tactics, McCain’s staff boasts that they don’t care. As a McCain spokesman told the Politico, 'We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.'"

Re: Unraveling the myth of the Straight Talk Express

Since naming Governor Palin as their Vice Presidential nominee, the McCain campaign has distorted, distracted, and outright lied to the American people about her record in a desperate attempt to hide the fact that a McCain/Palin Administration would be nothing more than a continuation of the failed Bush policies of the last eight years.

Indeed, today alone we learned that the McCain campaign’s claim that Governor Palin traveled to Iraq is a lie. In fact, she didn’t cross the Kuwait border. We learned that the McCain campaign is desperate enough to tell the press phony crowd numbers, which they falsely attributed to local elected officials and the United States Secret Service.  And we learned that despite Senator McCain’s claim that Governor Palin is a fiscal conservative, spending actually increased during her brief tenure as Governor.

Here are the facts. Governor Palin supported the Bridge to Nowhere, requested hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks, never visited Iraq, increased spending as governor, increased taxes as governor, and was about as successful selling that luxury jet on eBay as the McCain campaign has been selling her reputation as a reformer. Oh yeah, and the gas pipeline she touts won’t be usable for at least a decade, if it’s completed at all.

While the media is slowly starting to call the McCain campaign on their dishonest tactics, McCain’s staff boasts that they don’t care. As a McCain spokesman told the Politico, “We’re running a campaign to win. And we’re not too concerned about what the media filter tries to say about it.”

I guess patience is a virtue... the media narrative is finally starting to catch up with what so many of us have been watching for a couple weeks now. The endless distortions and outright lies from the McCain campaign have extinguished the last remnants of respect I had for the man. More here:  http://torqopia.blogspot.com/search/label/McCain
It is a sad state of affairs when a campaign spokesperson says, "We don't care what the media or anybody else thinks."  In other words, the lies will continue.  The Republican ticket, I dare say, is a shame before God! I would like to think that a majority of Americans would use some intelligence and see this.  But then again we have had Bush/Cheney for eight years.
Tragically, I have no faith in the tv media. They have been kissing Palin's backside and McCain's backside for 5 months now. Obama has to appologize for everyone who ever said hi to him, but McCain can tell outright lies, admit it and Joe Scarborough will be on Morning Joe talking about what a great campaign he's running, on top of the fact of all of the people Palin connects with.

It's truly a shame. The MSM put GWB in office and kept him there, then spent the last 4 years talking baout how bad a president he was.

It makes me sick.
Hunter Thomas:  Just stop! The game is up.  Finally some of the organizations that should be looking out for the good of the country are beginning to do so. Today, I am proud of the press corp. Even people like you are given proof of wrong doing, you refuse to accept it.  That just pathetic.
He put all the cards out on the table when he picked Palin.  He is trying to ride her wave and he is panicking that it won't last so he has to tell all these lies to inflate her credentials.  Have you no shame, Mr. McSame?  He must think we are stupid!
Greenspan said that McCain's economic plan is not affordable? So, how will he pay for his reported 3 trillion in tax cuts, we all know that he will eventually have to raise taxes.
I bet she did NOT file tax returns. This lady thinks that she is "ABOVE THE LAW".

1) Watch a stall by the McCain camp.

2) Then sexism

Will somebody find out how many other governors refuse to live in the capitol and then "charge" the tax payers for "traveling back and forth" from home to the capital.  UNBELIEVEABLE!!!! NOW THAT'S SOME CHANGE!!!!
Please once again ...another one to read

Not sure if anyone is asking the McCain about this ...
Where has the media gone?
The "mavrick" and "straight talk" are long gone; all that's left are outright lies.  Sad but true.
Straight talk express`= Straight lie express

It's about time the truth comes out. But McCain blames it on the fact that Obama will not accept having town hall meetings with him, well my friends neither would i accept. McCain is using the same tactics he complained about in 2000.
We cannot afford 4 more years of lies by the leader of our government.
Palin should have everyone scared, if she fires people due to not fully supporting her and her policies, what will she do to the american people who object to her?
Lying W/ a Straight Face Express...
There is no Straight Talk Express.  It has become the Rove Talk Express.  The problem is, it has no steam like it did in 2000 or 2004.  More of the American people have learned the hard way that you cannot believe much of what they say.
I think it is about time that all responsible jounalist at NBC,CBS,ABC,CNN,FOX,MSNBC,and every major newspaper and magazine print the truth.John McCain is not a maverick,he is a liar.We have had 8 years of liars.ENOUGH.
wheels off?

McCain is  a LIAR and that is a FACT

He is morally UNFIT for POTUS

Can you imagine if someone at MSNBC was caught in so many lies? What would MSNC do? Fire them

McCain/Palin = LIARS
I'm glad the press is finally calling the McCain camp on their lies because THAT is the story.

I would also like to see all of those GOP woman that stood up screaming "Obama is a sexist" account for the fact that their own party has admitted that they know that Obama would never be disrespectful to a woman; that they just made up the story so that Americans would not look at the issues.  I would like those woman to explain why they allow their own party to treat them like prostitutes.

The McCain-Palin ticket is having remarkable success with its revolutionary campaign tactic that I call: "Lying Eyes."

Dick Cavett
Back here in the past, when I'm writing this, we have just seen part one of her quizzing by Charles Gibson, with mixed reviews for both. So far I have not seen her confronted with some of the things about which she has been, to put it in that awful Diplomatically Correct phrase, "somewhat less than fully truthful." (Typesetter: If space is scarce, use "lying.") As in claiming "no thanks" to the bridge money while failing to disclose that she kept it.

Michael Cooper and Jim Rutenberg
In an interview Friday on the NY1 cable news channel, a McCain supporter, Senator Orrin G. Hatch of Utah, called "ridiculous" the implication that Mr. Obama's "lipstick on a pig" comment was a reference to Ms. Palin, whom he also defended as coming under unfair attack.

"The last month, for sure," said Don Sipple, a Republican advertising strategist, "I think the predominance of liberty taken with truth and the facts has been more McCain than Obama."

AP
Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Friday defended two debunked television ads attacking Democrat Barack Obama and claimed erroneously that running mate Sarah Palin never sought money for lawmakers' pet projects as Alaska governor.

Palin sought $197 million in so-called "earmarks" for 2009. In the previous budget year, she asked for earmarks worth $256 million

The spot is accurate in saying the Obama campaign called Palin a liar

Andy Barr
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has taken a more aggressive line of attack this week.
He has repeatedly hit his rivals for being dishonest about their portrayal of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's (R) record of reform.

Seattle Times News Service
Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska declined to back away from her declarations about her role in quashing the "Bridge to Nowhere," insisting Friday she had helped kill the earmark project.

LA Times
John McCain got it wrong Friday when he asserted that his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, had not requested any earmarks, the spending directives lawmakers insert in spending bills that McCain has vowed to eliminate.

Palin, in fact, requested $198 million in federal earmarks in February, including such expenses as $487,000 to fight obesity in Alaska and $4 million to develop recreational trails.

Jay Bookman:
   "McCain still peddles Palin mythology"

there are plenty more

McCain/Palin = LIARS and morally UNFIT to be in the White House
The campaign message from Republican party is lie. Lie to win. Lie to American people on purpose. It's not country first. It's not people first. It's their ambition first. They call themselves Christians.

If someone lied to me, I will never trust him(her) again. No matter how sweet those words are.  Even Jesus will be heart broken to hear his disciples lie.

McCain campaign lied over and over again. We don't want to listen to more lies. McCain has lost our trust. How can we trust a man lying to be the next President? Can you trust a liar to be a good President?  There will be more lies. A cheater will always be a cheater.

American people should stand up and refuse to be brain washed. We deserve a better country, a better future.
McPinnochio and the Smear-Talk Express

The Straight Talk Express..Has become the S**t Talk Express
come on FULL MOON... McCain just brushed aside the follow up questions of Babara and Behar... specially on the fact that Palin is not truely a "fiscal conservative" having accepted the big "pork" and really for the "bridge to nowhere" before it becomes a hot potatoe.
I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!!!

I helped keep John McCain afloat last year when he mismanaged his funds.  I was a big supporter in 2000.  This Palin thing makes me crazy.  After all these years he has sold out for some cheap GOP trick!

Obama is no my man.

Go Away McCain
DEms- You guys ready to lose another election?  The MSM has lost all credibility with all but the Dems.  Unfortunately they are already voting for Obama.

It is hilarious to hear the MSM is really mad now and not gonna take it. HA!  Incredibly stupid.  They took their shot and missed.  We will see in a week if this John McCain's a liar effect the polls in anyway.  I would be very surprised if they move in Obama's direction at all.

Good luck in 2012 but the MSM better wake.  They are not helping their canidates.
Ike.  And what will happen by the time Morning Snow gets this.  Joe will find a way to spend this to be sexist while he gets to cow everyone to shut up while he spouts off his "advice to Obama" as if he is not in the bag to that sexy duo, Sarah and John.

This story needs to build over the weekend, not end up in the round file.
