Axelrod meets the press

Posted: Saturday, September 13, 2008 7:00 PM by Chuck Todd

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
Obama chief strategist David Axelrod met the press today while traveling with the candidate in New Hampshire. Here are some highlights of the Q&A.

Q: On 1982 ad and why advertise re computer literacy, emailing..

Axelrod - "We're doing advertising on a lot of things .."

"That's one ad of many ads, but it's a relevant ad. You know, the other day, the question is who's in touch and who's ready to move this country forward."

(Goes on to talk about education adviser, McCain not being up on economics)

Q: Why is he doing wo well? John McCain?

Axelrod - "I think...that this race is pretty much where it was right before the convention. Why isn't he doing better? Why after all this ballyhoo and all this fascination isn't he doing better than he was before the convention started? This race is basically a very close and competitive race going into the convention. It is now. It's likely to be right up to the end. I think the American people are very serious about this election. You can see it in the amount of eyeballs that were on the conventions. Huge audiences watching both conventions. I think you'll see huge amount- numbers of people watching the debates."

Q: on Sarah Palin's foreign policy/ Iraq and bridge answers etc and whether the American people should be concerned about her nomination

Axelrod - "I think the American people are very smart. The American people are paying attention and they're gonna make judgments about all these candidates. I think the positive thing is that she finally submitted to an interview. I look forward to her standing right where I'm standing here and spending time with all of you guys, but it's positive. I think all of the candidates should answer questions and they will and I think that'll be a really instructive process and I have great faith in the judgment of the American people."

Q On how Obama is preparing for the first debate..

Axelrod - "Well, he's obviously, I mean, first of all the debate is on foreign policy, it's something that he knows a great deal about. He's on the foreign relations committee. He's thought about these issues a lot. He's had the added benefit of being right on them, so that's always good going into a debate. Issues like whether we should have gone into Iraq in the first place. But he's reviewing materials. I'm sure Sen. McCain is as well and he'll be prepping, you know, he'll be doing the things that you do before a debate. He's very eager for the debate, though, I think it'll be good to stand side by side and talk about some of these issues. It's a lot more illuminating than some of the stuff that's been coming out of the McCain campaign lately."

Q: Back to that 1982 ad talking about email, are you worried about offending those people in America who aren't necessarily that computer literate, older voters? Or are you worried about voters thinking that's not a big issue to be talking about.

Axelrod - "Well, I think it goes beyond the computer literacy. It goes beyond you know sort of whether you have ideas that are forward-looking or backward-looking and that's the most important thing. I think most people understand that the president of the United States needs to be in touch and understand both what's going on in the lives of the American people and what we need to do to get this country moving again in the future and that includes being in touch with the technology that exists today. But it's kind of a metaphor for Sen. McCainks views. Sen. McCain is sitting on the back of the truck looking backwards and wants to repeat the same mistakes we've seen for the last eight years."

While The Axe is out there trying his Chicago brand of politics on the nation (it won't work Dave, in the real world, Republicans win once in a while), McCain is busy keeping an eye on the situation in Texas.

Here's hoping Obama does well on tonights SNL. I hope he has better writers then those that write his cmapaign speeches. It's really hard to make an unfunny man funny. Kind of like putting lipstick on a pig.
Come on David, I'm a Obama/Biden supporter, but that ad sucked. The press asked legit questions(did I  just say ahoo.cothat). We would like to see some of our money spent on more hard hitting, issue driven ads. Thank you very much.
FR: on Sarah Palin's foreign policy/ Iraq and bridge answers etc and whether the American people should be concerned about her nomination .

Sarah Palin has as much foreign policy experience as, . . . Barry Obama! The only difference is, Palin in in the number 2 slot, Barry is in the number 1 slot.

Please...to suggest Obama isn't playing "fast and loose with the facts" and McCain is totally Nuts! Spent anytime looking into Obama's proposed tax policy for small businesses yet? He keeps saying he isn't going to raise taxes...please, give me a break!
The repubs are out in force today. One can feel the animosity...

---------------

We've got the day off being its the weekend and all that. Don't worry, on Monday we go back to our jobs and you and your unemployed friends will have the place back to yourselves.
My retired father is 74 years old and 'lives' on the computer. Whether it's managing his stock portfolio, paying his bills, or reading the WSJ online, he has kept up with technology! By the way, he doesn't use the fact that his fingers are disfigured (past fractures) as an excuse! He admits... "I don't want a President/Vice President who's like me, I want a President whose intelligence and abilities far exceed mine."  He is embarassed to admit that he voted for Bush in '04 and will be voting for Obama/Biden this year! Enough is enough!
US President can't send e-mail... What a World leader!
I wish Obama would tell mccain straight to his face 'Stop telling lies about me' at the debates!  You can be respectful and stand up for yourself.
It is time for Obama and Biden to say to the criticisms - I do not agree and I feel this way.  Period.
It is time to be affirmative in decisions and not explanative.  Explanations on stances is over.  Time to take a stand.

I stand with the Obama campaign for the hope of restoring and healing our America
He hit the nail on the head.  McPOW has always looked at were we have come from and has never paid any attention to where we are going.  Its clear that he has no idea where we need to go.
McCain has the willingness to sell us a bill of goods (Palin) with deceit and lies. He's right there with George W Bush.
geez, someone spellcheck this
Senator Obama should call mccain out and challenge him to start telling the truth!
mccain acted like a nervous rat at the forum having to come face to face with Obama.  Mccain knows he's conducting a dishonorable, disgusting, vile, negative campaign against Senator Obama.

mccain has nothing new to offer America except more of the same which will only make the economy so much worse.  Our economy can not tolerate another republican presidency without going into a deep depression.

How can the “Duel Personality” McCain and the “lipstick pit-bull” be trusted when they are both liars and hypocrites blaring change and reform? What is the ear-piercing “lipstick pit-bull’s reform-- less ear marks, less firings, abortion for rape victims, and protection for animals? And unquestionably vague, visibly out- of- touch “Duel Personality’s,” what change does he offer?   I doubt if it’ll be a higher minimum wage;   not privatizing Social Security and Medicare,  benefits for veterans, diplomacy in Foreign Policy, more earmarks, gay marriage, stop PURGING VOTERS LIST,  public education, changing tax cuts, an economic stimulus, not repealing Roe v. Wade, no lobbyist in Washington, more unions?  I think not.
It’s about time the media started fighting the smears; media information sets the tone and is what low information voter’s go after.

The odd couple with two things in common; they’re both liars and hypocrites!  One is detached and the other is welled connected.

With Mccain/Palin, The Worst Is Yet To Come.
Enough
Enough glossing over!
No way!
No how!
No McCain/Palin!
Nobody but Obama/Biden

I am glad to hear David sounding so positive, but I must advise him that they need to find more issues, like women's issues where McCain does not vote for equal rights for us _ put that in an Ad. Leave Palin  to the Press, focus on McCain. When McCain comes out with a nasty ad, hid back hard and swift do not let them have one moment to bask in the 'joy' of being nasty. McCain said that this is politics and it is a tough business. That's what he said on The View. Obama does not have to change his stance on not telling lies about McCain, just every time McCain comes out with some thing, counter with the same ad demonstrating the truth. Don't let them get away with anything.

I hope that Obama will shine in the debate without seeming to be 'cocky'. He should just be cool, no hesitating with his answers.
Mr. Axelrod only got it half right.  In my view, the overarching message of the email ad is that John McCain's non-existent computer literacy demonstrates a glaring lack of flexibility.  He's not willing to change and cannot muster the curiosity to try.  This is not just an age thing because George W. Bush clearly suffers from the same bullheadedly incurious ailment.  One of the impressive attributes that attracted me to the candidacy and campaign of Barack Obama is his demonstrated willingness and ability to learn.  He was a professor, but he's been attending and learning from a different kind of university during this long and grueling campaign.

You can govern without being willing to learn, but you will be a more effective and engaged president if you can grow and react to the dynamics of American society and international events. Senator Obama can do it but I have grave doubts that Senator McCain is capable of it.  So the email ad is way more effective than I think the media or even Mr. Axelrod realize.
John McCain is sitting on the back of the truck and looking at the bridge to nowhere!

One American who thinks she deserve's better than this.

OMG!!! The STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS  wheels came all the way off the bus and now the campaign is in an old '82 truck!!!I SAY WHOA, YOU COUNTERFEIT MAVERICKS!!!
