Palin's 'Bridge to Nowhere' line returns

From NBC/NJ's Matthew E. Berger
CARSON CITY, Nev. -- In her first solo campaign rally outside of Alaska, Gov. Sarah Palin drew an enthusiastic crowd at the Pony Express Pavilion Saturday and returned to a familiar refrain about the “Bridge to Nowhere.”

Palin has come under fire in recent days for misleadingly saying she told Congress “thanks but no thanks,” refusing an earmark for a bridge to a sparsely inhabited island in her home state. Independent groups and media fact-checkers have said Palin advocated for the federal earmark before opposing it, only ended after Congress had essentially killed it, and kept the $223 million for the appropriation after the project was killed.

Palin had cut the refrain from her speech during her three-day visit to Alaska. But she came back to it today, citing it as an example of earmark reform she and McCain would push for in the White House.

“I told Congress thanks but no thanks to that Bridge to Nowhere -- that if our state wanted to build that bridge, we would build it ourselves," she said.

Palin did not deviate much from the speech she had given the last two weeks on the road with McCain. She reiterated a line that she put the governor’s luxury jet on eBay. While accurate, the jet wasn’t sold on eBay.

Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki said on stage that 10,000 people were in the crowd, but parks officials said the pavilion held only 3,500 people. The audience consisted of significantly more women than McCain-Palin joint rallies over the last two weeks, and Palin addressed her historic candidacy head on.

“The women of America aren’t finished yet, this November, with your help, we’re gonna shatter one glass ceiling once and for all,” she said.

Palin also acknowledged the presence of Chuck Yeager, the first pilot to break the sound barrier.

And the lies continue.  Just like the McCain campaign said they would.
Okay, so I hope the MSM will not let the McCain/Palin ticket get away with all of this lying. It only proves that they are morally unfit for the greatest political office in the world. I repeat: they are unfit to even run for office, let alone actually govern.
She can lie and, can lie with a straight face. We could expect much more of that during the next four years - just like the last 8 years. If anything, the Palin/McCain ticket has shown itself to be a carbon copy of the Bush administration. When in doubt, just lie. Karl Rove has taught them all very well. Are there some honorable Republican leaders out there? Where is the honorable JBonner from Ohio? He's as conservative as they come but pretty decent. How can he put up with this stuff? Are they all corrupt?

Is it just me, or is the luster fading?

Maybe it is just that the bloom is off the rose, or...

perhaps she is beginning to stink the place up.

Hopefully, you the media will continue to call out the McCain/Palin team as the liars they are. She can't think for herself and can only give a speech that is written for her and speak the same tired lines over and over. Maybe some of these people will wake up and realize they are being duped soon.
Well of course!  Alaskan's know better!  She can't use that line in her home state...

Sounds like she can count as well as McCain with crowd numbers...

I'm watching the MSNBC special about her tonight, and can't wait to see her tax returns...  Let's see if she paid taxes on that 'per diem'...

This woman is NOT ready for prime time - to compare her with Hillary is a falicy...  For women everywhere.

This is a negative 'Hail Mary'...  Has anyone noticed when she's on the trail, Cindy is always on stage also?  Do we see some competition here?
I wonder why she keeps repeating that "Bridge to Nowhere" story when everyone knows it's not true?  I wonder if the women in the crowd grimaced when she said it.  And if she uses that "I fired the chef" line again, another grimace.  The Palin family chose to live in Wasilla (600 miles away from Juneau), so no one was home at the Governor's mansion to cook for.   The chef was reassigned because no one was there...she wasn't "fired"...
What a liar.  She admitted to Charles Gibson that she had not opposed the bridge.  What are you supposed to think of someone who has been caught in a lie and keeps repeating it? She just doesn't care.  How can she fight fraud, if she is a fraud.  She and McCain are two of a kind -- will do anything to get elected.  I think the scary part of this is that she believes God chose her for this role, and the end justifies the means.  So much for being a good Christian.
I tell people THANKS but no thanks, on that Mccain/Palin ticket.  If I wanted to put liars in the white house I'd vote.....well Republican!
Good God ,They cant even tell the truth about how many people show up at there rallys. These people are bad news.
The republican doctrine is "Lie until people believe it is the truth."  Maybe Charlie should ask palin about that one.
Do we know if there is anyone accepting or rejecting these lies ...well ...once, twice, thrice and beyond that ...it is NOT a charm!
Doesn't matter. She can lie all she wants - the Republicans have successfully created a character for whom people, albeit "low information" voters, want to vote. And they have successfully painted this character as a victim of the media - so anything that does not fit nicely into their narrative can be easily dismissed by people who are too busy trying to feed their children, balance their checkbooks, pay for gas, and keep their homes -- to pay much more attention.

The sad part is - if they don't pay attention and vote for the Character Sarah Palin - they are going to be blindsided by the reality of McCain and Palin if they are elected. (Just like they were with Bush) But I'm sure the Republicans will find a way to convince them that it's all the fault of the dems and they will create another wonderful little imaginary character to put on the ballot in 2016.
Wow. Ok. So will they push it to November? Next move, media. Up for a showdown? And yest I think the luster is fading, I used to be anxious, now I'm just disgusted.
What the hell is wrong with these people?

Wake up America! They're lying to your face and expect you to elect them.
Thank you! Finally, someone is reporting the fact that she KEPT THE MONEY even though the project was dismantled.  How exactly is that "Reform", Governor?  It sure sounds like the "same old politics", to me.

Also, it might be a good idea for someone in the media to hire an independent crowd-assessor, because this is the second time this week there has been a discrepancy in the crowd estimates at a McCain-Palin event.  At the Fairfax, VA event on Sept 10, the McCain aides were reporting a crowd estimate of 23,000; while other estimates put the actual attendance in the 8-10,000 range.  Now they appear to be inflating the numbers in NV.  Pathetic.
Put aside the question of experience – we decided in 1974 that pathological liars aren't fit to serve in the White House.
If the people of this country do elect Palin to the vice presidency they deserve all the bad things that will follow. That woman is totally incompetant.
Sarah Palin is the Bridge to nowhere.

Hockey moms for Obama/Biden
@Mark

Well, I smell something. And it sure ain't roses.

What she's selling there is 100% grade A bull dookie. I just can't believe she's finding buyers. Sucker born every day I guess.
Sarah Palin is the Bridge to nowhere.

Hockey moms for Obama/Biden
It's up to the media to point out the lies she says every time she says them.  I hope MSNBC will do its part.  At this point it is obvious the McCain campaign has no regards for the truth...
Funny to read this blog, how many times Obama has embellished and beef up his resume and achievements in Illinois and Congress? Plenty!! How many times he has flip flopped? plenty?? What the media has written about it?? NOTHING!!
And Palin lied about visiting Iraq too. Enough lies from Palin and McCain! Vote no to thier dishonesty.
She is not ready for this slot!  It is laughable that we are covering her and she has demonstrated that she is a empty dress.  I want to see how long the media continues to say well she did OK..not a homerun...she is bringing excitement...blah blah blah.  The double standard here is riveting.
if at first you dont succeed lie, lie again.
Seriously, she must know she's lying. After all, she was there, she knows she campaigned for the bridge, know she kept the money, knows she's still planning on building it. So that means she's either completely OK with lying... which would show her to be a morally corrupt and sad individual... or she doesn't believe it's a lie... in which case she's delusional. Either way, she's unfit for any public office. I hope for America's sake we see the McCain camp for what it is... and if not, God (who doesn't like lying) help us all...
Today, an anti-Palin rally drew more supporters than a pro-Palin rally. And that 23,000 people the M/P Campaign that Forgot To Care™ said they drew was really only 8,000.
Before Governor Palin was the Republican nominee for Vice President, the Associated Press reported her stating that, “Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer,” and pointed out that “[s]he directed the state transportation department to find the most ‘fiscally responsible’ alternative for access to the airport.

The Alaska Democratic Party – certainly no fan of Sarah Palin – has weighed in on this issue. An anti-Ted Stevens website run by the Alaska Democratic Party says “Ted Earmarked Funds for Bridge that Goes Nowhere” and the “State of Alaska killed bridge”. They go further to credit Governor Palin for killing the Bridge to Nowhere. The site states: “She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.” (emphasis added)
There was a line in "The Man who Shot Liberty Valance", when legend becomes fact, print the legend. This thing with Palin would be funny if it wasn’t both sad and scary at the same time. That she could keep repeating the “Bridge to Nowhere” lie, even after being called on it, is beyond common decency. If these cynical ploys determine the election, it will be doubly tragic. First, I am convinced that Obama would make a truly great President, especially so given the trouble in which our country finds herself. Second, between the lies upon lies in the McCain ads, which John McCain is approving, and the lies that Sarah Palin is telling, it is as if they are, without any shame, auditioning for a third Bush/Cheney term. Then our country so wont to conquer others shall make a shameful conquest of itself.
ENOUGH!!
MSM do your job and expose these Liars!

Obama/Biden 08 & 12
They can't get away with it this time. Our country can't take another four years of this.

Don't believe the lies.

Speaking of lies, anyone interested in a "McCain Lies" bumper sticker or button?
That Rollins' Band Song "Liar" fits her perfectly.
This woman is a shameless liar.  I have no hesitation in saying that at all.
Between the subpeona's of family members, the exagerated truths about he record, lies about her prior position on important issues.....it's like they really are a repeat of Bush/Cheney.  I even heard a GOP rep on a talk show say Palin wasn't obligated to give interviews to the media since they're all out to get her.  All we need now is some secret meetings with the oil companies and maybe having her hide in an undisclosed location until the election.  Then it'll be just like Bush/Cheney again!
I wonder if the people were allowed to ask questions.  And if not, would anyone ever be able to ask questions?
I'm more concerned with the speech she gave to troops about to be deployed to Iraq that they were going to fight those who plotted, carried out and celebrated the attacks on 9/11. Even Bush has acknowledged that Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks. Why hasn't that been questioned? Doesn't she know better? She's perpetuating another lie.
It is really sad that this sort of thing is taking place, and there are lots of people who don't read enough to realize that these are lies.

MSM, get this on the front page of every paper. Liars are not fit for public office!

I think John Stewart said it best, and I'm paraphrasing: first she said "please" for the $$ for the bridge, then she said "thanks" when the $$ was delivered, then she said "no thanks" when it was killed by congress. She also said "no thanks" to returning the money! Alaska kept every cent. What a joke!

This woman is a liar, a fraud, a joke, and she's arguably the better half of the ticket.
Unfortunately this woman is not stable and very frightening.  Also how can you say the crowd is 10,000 when it is only 3,500.  What is wrong with the Republicans?? Do they think Americans are fools?
ENOUGH!!
Wow, we have always know politicians stretch the truth, but to blatantly tell an out right lie is astounding. How can voters say this is okay and trust these candidates when they get in office?

It is so very disappointing. The woman seems like she has some brains but is not using it. I hope the media will not allow this to continue without reporting this in prime time.

She is going out on her own as of this weekend I hope someone in the audience ask her when she insists on inflating the facts.
She just keeps lying, she lied about her stance on global warming during the interview, and she continues to lie about this so called bridge to nowhere, she probably thinks that just because she is a woman no can call her out on it.
SO WHATS YOUR POINT!Fact is there is no bridge and she was instrumental in getting rid of it. I think its odd you stay on this tack when there are far more relevant stories too pursue. First how much did Bide and Obama get and for whom . Why is not there anything on your front page about Biden's son the lobbyist. You might also note that both Biden and Obama supported the bidge.Gee you guys are so biased you would think you are part of MSNBC. Oh thats right you are.
Are we watching an episode from 'King of the Hill' where Peggy Hill goes to Washington without knowing the issues.

S.Palin is NO Hillary Clinton...At least H.Clinton knows and sounds smart when she is talking about foreign affairs. S.Palin is making women look stupid.

All S.Palin has to offer is the same story line at all her rallies, and we know her interview we may be in another war if McCain/Palin was elected.

i am registered republican voting now Obama/Biden I feel very strongly that they will be change and keep our country safe.

Obama/Biden NOW

And her downfall begins. Thank you God, I knew I could trust you.
As the McCain team has said, "We are in this to win" and are therefore not bound to silly things like facts. Their actual words were that they were unconcerned with what "media filters" have to say about the truthfulness or lack thereof of anything and everything they say.

Palin is merely following her boss' lead.
MSM COME ON FOR THE LOVE OF THIS COUNTRY!! WHY ARE YOU FAILING US! CALL THEM OUT ON THE LIES. WE DESEVRE BETTER
This woman is more and more like Cheney.  Scary.  Sooner or later the bubble will burst, hopefully soon!
Obama/Biden '08
I don't understand.  If Congress killed the appropriation and never gave away the money, how was Palin able to keep the $233 million?  Was this money that Alaska raised?  I don't think the point is clear in the article and I've heard others cite it.  PLease respond.
This woman is a liar and slicker than an oil can!! She hires her friends to high paying jobs and fires her critics.  Her 'executive experience' is full of corruption and cronyism.  This fraud should never be allowed within a breath of the oval office!
Notice that Palin had no problem campaigning at a major rally while the disaster of hurricane Ike was being addressed. Yet, Obama took most of today and the rest of weekend off.

You know, when you have to fight a political WAR to keep internal national threats such as McCain and Palin from taking over our country, you wouold think Obama would understand there are no days off in fighting for our country ...
