Book review: 'Sarah' -- filling in the gaps

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
If that Disney version of Sarah Palin’s life were ever to be made, the script would probably be based on “Sarah” by Kaylene Johnson.

The 137-page -- 32 of which are pictures -- large-fonted storybook re-telling of Palin’s life depicts that positive image much of America heard of Palin in her vice presidential nominee acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention -- and repeated by Palin on the stump several times in the past two weeks.

If it’s a fair, investigative piece you’re looking for, this isn’t it. But what the book, written by someone who doesn't claim to be a journalist, does do is fill in some of the detail of Palin’s early life and paints a picture of a tenacious, headstrong, even stubborn person, who has an uncanny ability to connect with voters and is ultimately guided by a moral compass of right and wrong. The book, with a copyright of 2008, was likely published before “Troopergate” began to boil. Its epilogue has a reference to March 2008, but “Troopergate” really began to get more attention after the state’s top cop was fired in July.

Palin did take great political risk with pushing ethics investigations forward on members of her own political party. It’s clear that the Republican establishment was not a friend of Palin’s, and she had to scrimp by with low-budget campaigns, her own grit and her lauded hand-to-hand campaign style.

A lack of specifics
But it also lays out that Palin was elected because of her reform message in a state frustrated by corruption -- not because of her depth of knowledge on the issues. Her lack of specificity confounded Democrat Tony Knowles’ campaign -- endorsed by major newspapers in the state.

She was adept at the art of deflection in debates. At one gubernatorial forum, for example, Knowles laid out a four-year education plan. Palin instead “paid tribute to her father as a beloved school teacher and promised -- without specifics -- to make education a top priority.”

With her or against her
There is only brief mention of Palin, a former town councilwoman, asking the librarian to resign -- as well as every other department head in the town of Wasilla, including the police chief. They supported an opponent during Palin’s first bid to be mayor, in which she defeated the incumbent 651-440. There was a large outcry from much of the established town officials who even considered launching recall efforts in her first two weeks in office.

Palin didn’t wilt. Instead, she hunkered down and issued what could almost be described as the Palin Doctrine -- you were either with her, or against her.

In fairness, the town had been used to operating in a certain way. And Palin was now elected to be in charge. She probably needed to show some grit -- that she wouldn’t be intimidated -- so she could ultimately lead. Johnson’s depiction is that Palin largely delivered on her campaign promises, and then won by a larger margin in her re-election bid in 1999, 826-255.

Sports Arena: Palin wanted to move the town forward, so she raised sales taxes, the book says, by half a percent to fund a $15 million sports arena. But the book doesn’t mention that the project saddled the town, which had $0 debt when Palin took office, with about $20 million in debt when she left.

Bridge to Nowhere: There is only fleeting mention of the “bridge to nowhere” in the epilogue -- that Palin “withdrew state support” for the project. But Johnson makes no mention of Palin having supported the bridge in her run up to governor or that she only pulled the plug after the national spotlight and Congressional outcry made the project unpopular.

Todd and Sarah: It mentions that a then-Sarah Heath and Todd Palin eloped, but there’s no mention that her first child Track was born eight months later, according to Newsweek. An interesting note from the book, that Sarah and Todd were told when they got to a nearby town’s courthouse that needed witnesses in order to get married, “so they walked across the street” to a “state-run nursing home.” “Two volunteers, one of them in a wheelchair and the other supported by a walker, looked on…”

Todd and Sarah met in high school. He was new to the area and at Wasilla High just his senior year. Palin said in the book that there was competition for Todd, and other girls had “T-O-D-D” written on their knuckles. Ultimately, Todd said there was no competition. The only explanation as to why from Todd was, “She was the best-looking girl on the basketball team.”

Sarah Palin describes Todd as “competitive” when it comes to commercial fishing, even and particularly with family and called him a “brutal boss.” In fact, one day when she was on board, she broke several fingers when her hand, which was on a railing was smashed when the boat “sidled up to a tender to which they were delivering a load of fish.” Todd brought her to shore, but then picked her up the next day and even with a bandaged hand, she went back out to help him fish.

“I couldn’t disappoint him,” Palin said in the book. “No matter how cold or nauseous, you just didn’t complain.”

The college days: As far as Palin’s college experience, there is no mention of Palin transferring out of the University of Idaho to Mat-Su College, a two-year school, near Wasilla -- and that Palin later transferred back and finished at the University of Idaho, as reported by the Associated Press. Johnson hardly questions why Palin transferred so many times -- five times by our count.

It mentions that Palin and a friend got straight As while in Hawaii -- without any attribution or evidence. There are no transcripts mentioned or shown.

If most people were applying for a job, they would almost certainly be asked why they transferred schools so many times and request to see their transcripts. There may be legitimate reasons, but the questions would be raised. To this point, Palin’s college transcripts have not been made public.

The reasons culled from the book for the transfers -- at Hawaii Hilo, her first school, it rained too much. But Hilo is an area known for its rain, and the question isn’t raised as to whether Palin had researched the school beforehand to know that.

Palin apparently decided to go to idyllic Hawaii for college with three friends. They all decided to transfer to Hawaii Pacific University, but two of them became homesick and returned to Alaska. At Hawaii Pacific, Palin lived in an apartment a block from the beach, but she and her friend missed dorm life and winter.

So they transferred to North Idaho College, a two-year school, where Palin “didn’t do anything particularly wild” except for once setting off a dorm fire alarm. She had to apologize to the dean.

Palin was born in Idaho; her older brother Chuck was attending the University of Idaho. Palin then transferred to the University of Idaho, wanting to continue her studies in broadcast journalism, explained in the book, in part, after seeing herself on camera for a 30-minute videotaped speech in a class at North Idaho.

But then a gap in Palin’s education isn’t explored in the book, but which AP writes about -- that she transferred to Matanuska-Susitna College, or Mat-Su College. It’s another two-year school -- in “the Valley,” near her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska. She then transferred back to the University of Idaho a year later, where she eventually graduated in 1987 -- five years after graduating high school, five transfers, six different college experiences.

The chef: It mentions that the governor’s chef was laid off and that she put the governor’s jet up for sale on eBay. It doesn’t mention that the chef was hired back on for the legislature or that the jet never sold on the Web site. And when it was sold it was sold at a loss.

Children: The book mentions that her latest child, Trig, has Down syndrome, but there is no mention or explanation as to why she got on a plane after she realized her amniotic fluid was leaking in Texas and then flew eight hours to Alaska -- after a layover in Seattle. Palin said she checked with her doctor and that she was not in labor -- that she’d had had four other children and knew what labor was.

The Alaska Daily News on the baby’s delivery from April 22: “Early Thursday -- she thinks it was around 4 a.m. Texas time -- she consulted with her doctor, family physician Cathy Baldwin-Johnson, who is based in the Valley and has delivered lots of babies, including Piper, Palin's 7-year-old. Palin said she felt fine but had leaked amniotic fluid and also felt some contractions that seemed different from the false labor she had been having for months. ‘I said I am going to stay for the day. I have a speech I was determined to give," Palin said. She gave the luncheon keynote address for the energy conference.

“Palin kept in close contact with Baldwin-Johnson. The contractions slowed to one or two an hour, ‘which is not active labor,’ the doctor said. ‘Things were already settling down when she talked to me.’ … Palin did not ask for a medical OK to fly, the doctor said. ‘I don't think it was unreasonable for her to continue to travel back.’ Palin: ‘I am not a glutton for pain and punishment. I would have never wanted to travel had I been fully engaged in labor,’ Palin said.

“Still, a Sacramento, Calif., obstetrician who is active in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said when a pregnant woman's water breaks, she should go right to the hospital because of the risk of infection. That's true even if the amniotic fluid simply leaks out, said Dr. Laurie Gregg. ‘To us, leaking and broken, we are talking the same thing. We are talking doctor-speak,’ Gregg said.

“Palin said she wanted him born in Alaska but wouldn't have risked anyone's health to make that happen.” But Todd said, "You can't have a fish picker from Texas.”

We do learn why her children are named what they are:
-- Track -- because of the season he was born in. Palin’s father is track and field coach, and Palin herself was a distance runner. Palin without hesitation says in the book if it were basketball season, her oldest son would have been named “Hoop.” Palin also played basketball. Apparently, Palin chose not to run for U.S. Senate against Lisa Murkowski because Track was wary of the spotlight. The rest of the family was on board. (Johnson writes Palin was at one point on a list of eight to fill the U.S. Senate seat -- before Gov. Murkowski chose his own daughter.)

-- Bristol -- the bay where she and her husband fished.

-- Willow -- Alaska’s state bird, the willow ptarmigan.

-- Piper Indy -- A Piper Cub is the type of plane Todd flies and a Polaris Indy is the “snowmobile Todd drove in the first of his four victories in the Iron Dog snowmobile race…”

-- Trig Paxson Van -- Apparently Trig has two norse meanings – “true” and “brave victory.” “Paxson is the name of an Interior lake popular among snow machiners.” No explanation in the book on the name “Van,” but AP wrote that it was “an homage to the rock band Van Halen,” which recently supposedly said it had not given permission to use the song, “Right Now.”

Where are you now, Woodward and Bernstein?

Is there no "Deep Throat" to be found in Wasilla?

(BTW, "The Story of O" was removed within the past 4 years from the Wasilla library and not replaced. Check it out [but not in Wasilla]).

OMG:
paints a picture of a tenacious, headstrong, even stubborn person, who has an uncanny ability to connect with voters and is ultimately guided by a moral compass of right and wrong.
This sounds just like Bush, who buried his head in the sand and has left the country in despair. I am sorry, I need a President and VP smarter than me, not dumber. This is too important to be playing with. If you like Palin, invite her over for iced tea but don't vote for her. No wonder, we are falling behind other industrialized countries.
Bush/Cheney/Rove redux.  Anyone tired of the "you are either with me or my enemy" way of campaigning?

Can you IMAGINE this woman having self-perceived  say whatsoever over the FBI or IRS?

Palin is emotionally, and intellectually unequipped to serve as VP.  That is becoming more clear by the day.
As long as it's described as "Fiction" and not "Biography"...or maybe "Fantasy" is a better description of the genre...
Why aren't you covering anything on the facts about Palin's involvement in secession and her husband being a secessionist--why haven't you aired her speech
on telling them to "keep up the good work"- and their party leade's venom???????
Ye Gods!  Do we really need 4 more years of "my way or the highway" and self-centeredness in or near the Oval Office? Not to mention taking a town with zero debt and leaving them $20 mil in the hole!

I've seen this movie the last 8 years.  I'd like to change the channel please.

Like Mom, like daughter, apparently. Another typical case of low Democrat morals...oh, yeah, that's right. She's a Republican! Maybe they just define family values differently for Republicans.

None of this would be an issue if Palin wasn't the foremost cheerleader for the GOP platform which promises to deny to all American families the right to choose that Sarah and Bristol Palin both exercised. The denial of choice goes for all pregnancies, even in the cases of rape, incest, and endangerment of the mother's future reproductive health.
What a JOKE!!
Spin, spin, spin   next thing you know we will be reading that she is Mother Theresa reincarnate. ENOUGH
Even in a book w/ a pro-palin bias, the woman comes off as a nut case....McCain is obviously losing his marbles....he's becoming incoherent; and, that grin of his is frightening.....90% of the American public is more qualified than Palin.  It seems McCain was just looking for a pathalogical liar to stand beside him as he lies, and lies, and lies.
Does Palin's "moral compass of right and wrong" include shameless lying?  Repeatedly?  To the nation and the world?

It's about time women send a message to the media, hot shot corporate news men and sexist men whether Dem or Rep that the American woman are tired of them telling us we can't do the job. The media big boys smeared Hillary and now Sarah. One was is the Senator from NY and the other the Governor of Alaska. I don't care what party has the woman. Obviously, it has nothing to with a woman’s point of view, B.Hussein never even vetted Hillary. He couldn't careless what she stood for. He dumped her and 18 million supporters for a white good old boy drunk. Vote for Sarah

I don't need to know anymore about this ego centric, vindictive, dumb as dirt narcissist. I think we need to know if she really does buy into that Alaska forever stuff, it's really scary. If Michelle Obama was a member of a secessionist party the right would be having a field day!
I am confounded by the coverage that this woman is getting, when I see what is NOT being exposed about this person.  She was mayor of a town smaller than the little one I'm from, and seems to be mired in controversy and an adjenda at best out of a spoiled-child story, and 1930's fascist politics, at worst. Lets get real  here folks and call on the truth, subject her to the scrutiny any NORMAL candidate would experience.  As for me,  I'm ready to throw up if I hear much more on how wonderful and tenacious this woman is.
My way or the highway?  This country doesn't need more of that.  To the "McCain/Palin Ticket" to nowhere, I said "Thanks, but no thanks."

Hey, I just gave another donation to Obama.  YES!!  I agree with Emily and Sotiredofignorance.

This makes my (I lost count), I believe it is my 22nd donation.  I love Obama and I love this grassroots campaign, where everyone can be involved, and where even our low-income, "little people" donations count big toward changing Washington.

About Tom Brokaw:  I have always loved Mr. Brokaw, but I believe that "Meet the Press" needs someone more objective and less judgmental.  Like John McCain, there comes a time to let the new generation take the lead with a fresh outlook.
Be afraid, America -- be very afraid.
This woman is as flaky as an Alaskan snow storm.  She has no business being even close to the red button that could start a nuclear war.

Wake up American!!!
I can't understand why smart, competent Republican women aren't up in arms about this nomination. There are many strong women in their party who would have been much more formidable. I guess for all Republicans now it's okay to sell your soul to get the White House. It's a frightening thought.
What a truly scary woman!

Kathy, Charlotte, NC
God help this country if this woman is elected VP.
Why can't we get this much indepth information about Barak Obama?  Makes you wonder?
This is really turning into and absolute lefty rag.  My days here are over.  DO you guys only listen to Keith Olberman or something??? There is much more info on this Woman and I like what I see!! good bye
Pregnancy and all of its forthcoming joys, whether you are a pro-life or pro-choice woman typically make you share God's gift of a miracle with all the folks you know. My intuition tells me, although it may be troubling to some; is that Ms. Palin knew her child was going to born with Down's Syndrome and may have thought that prolonging her labor would render the decision to keep her child moot. Why not go to a hospital in Texas? No one knew she was pregnant until very late in her pregnancy. Why keep it a secret? She gambled with the health of her unborn son, knowing his challenges. The simplistic explanation of wanting him to be born in Alaska doesn't square in my view.  I realize it is a sobering and cunning take but the fact no one new she was pregnant is telling for being such a strong pro-life proponent.
Sarah's is very well filling the gaps of the brains of the McCain-Palin supporters. Sure ,she's adding more fantasies to feed their denial, just exactly what they need. Sarah's been a blessing for the Republican Party and the Soap Opera's viewers. Unfortunately, this Palin's bubble will burst soon.
Did NBC do this much investigating into obama's back-ground???  Seems all we really know about him - is What HE has told us - you know that nice picture HE has painted.  BUT - Has the DNC actually SEEN his Birth Certificate????  Just asking.
The Palin type doctrine is very scary. She has already shown she can be very power drunk. Vindictiveness and my "way or the highway" in a potential President of the United States is just plain foolishness. Her ability to connect with the voters is merely playing up to a populace that is just fed up and will jump on anything new. I am sure her robot style speeches will begin to gnaw on the voters. Obama is and has a very shrewed team. The Palin surge will go the way of the hula hoop and pet rock fad. Palin will wind up on the bridge to nowhere.
America got this wrong in 2000 & 2004 and we are all paying for the Decit now Big TIme our families are suffering and millions barely making it in this economy.

Our ederly Bankruptcy is the highest in our history so we have thrown them to the wolves

Our children's education is far lacking compared to the rest of the world

Yet we are presented with a woman who's Family Values Do Not Meet Amrica's and Republicans who when presented with this same senerio in other families Cry That these families have lost their Family Values

Every Evangelical, Russ Limbaugh, Fox News spoke badly of Jamie Spears yet when presented with the Exact Same Situation with the Palin family welcomed her with open arms.

Republicans are using Palin as the Example of how a family should raise their kids and how a Mom should exact revenge on others in the work place

America has certainly lost it's way and we now have a chance to fix it.

Not with the many LIES that have been thrown our way in the past 2 weeks but we must DEMAND that ANYone applying for a LEDERSHIP JOB IN THE #1 & #2 positions must be  CREDIBLE AND HAVE INTEGRITY.

I AM AN INDEPENDENT AND THIS IS JUST UNBELIEVABLE AND I AND MANY OTHERS CLEARLY HOPE THAT WE CAN THIS TIME TRUST AMERICANS TO PUT COUNTRY AND THEIR FAMILIES FIRST

SOMETIMES IT SEEMS AMERICANS IF YOU LISTEN TO THE MEDIA IS MORE INTERESTED IN PERSONALITIES V. ISSUES AND WHAT'S AND WHO'S BEST FOR OUR COUNTRY.

ALL OUR VOTES AFFECT THE LIVELYHOOD AND FUTURES OF OUR CHILDREN.  LET'S HOPE AMERICANS HAVE THE MORAL COURAGE TO LOOK DEEP WITHIN AND MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE BECAUSE LIKE IT OR NOT THE FINAL RESULT WILL IMPACT ALL OUR LIVES, OUR CHILDREN'S AND GENERATIONS TO COME EITHER POSITIVELY OR DRIVE THIS COUNTRY TO IT'S BREAKING POINT

THE REST OF THE WORLD IS LOOKING AND IS CONVENIENCED THAT AMERICA HAS LOST IT'S MORAL COMPASS, THE ABILITY TO DESERVE THEIR RESPECT AS A LEADER AND THEY ARE MOVING ON WORKING TOGETHER WHILE WE SPEND OUR TIME ON WHAT DIVIDE US

THE REST OF THE WORLD HAS MOVED AHEAD OF THE U.S. LIKE IT OUR NOT. THEY ARE EVEN WORKING WITH THEIR ENEMIES WHILE THEY WATCH THE U.S. CONTINUE TO FALL APART.
Interesting article on the front page of today's New York Times reporting that as Governor, she appointed a classmate to a high agricultural post on the qualification that she loved cows as a child.
She get more bizarre with each day.  I hope America is really listening.
OMG!!! I truly cringed if this woman ever make it to the white house. Lord have mercy if she will have to pick up that 3 a.m. call!
Yeah! She must have obviously flirted with potential employers to be NOT ask about her multiple college transfers!
Please America, do what is right for you and this country, and NOT for McShame/Ms.Vogue Pin-up queen and their multitude of cronies!
Get out and vote for Obama/Biden!

Attached is a link of a good article of the GOP lies, deceit and hypocrisy and this from a Filipino author abroad!
Best statement is this about Palin:
As it happens, the best riposte to this condescending attitude to social workers and community organizers is a line I first stumbled upon in Facebook. “Jesus was a community organizer; Pontius Pilate was a governor.”

Here's the article:
The unbearable lightness of Republican hypocrisy

By John Nery
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 13:10:00 09/11/2008

SINGAPORE—It is in the Republican Party’s best interests to lose the November elections. Years in power have so debased the party of Lincoln it has corrupted even language itself (an incomparable instrument in Lincoln’s care, and an indivisible part of his legacy).

Consider Sarah Palin.

John McCain’s running mate is attractive and easy to like: Tina Fey with a moose gun. (Life magazine ran an uncanny cover featuring the “Saturday Night Live” comedienne and McCain, still in Straight Talk Express mode, a few years back.) Palin seems like the kind of All-American go-getter we’ve all met: naturally courteous, pleasantly assertive, earnest and self-sufficient.

She is also a liar. Or, alternatively, her acceptance speech was a concatenation of lies.

I realize that, as Orwell reminded us half a century ago, political language conceals as much or even more than it reveals, and that campaign rhetoric, almost by definition, uses the grammar of exaggeration. But the kind of lies we heard from the Republicans in St. Paul was out of the ordinary. (Incidentally, St. Paul is the charming town that memorializes F. Scott Fitzgerald, another great American writer who closely followed the intimate traffic between lies and terminal decadence.)

At their political convention, the Republicans went beyond being economical with the truth; they positively splurged on the untruths.

Perhaps even lying is not an accurate enough word. The language of the party in power has clearly undergone an Orwellian transformation, where words either don’t mean anything, or they mean the exact opposite of what they are supposed to mean. When the party in power the last eight years (six of them with control of Congress) runs on the mandate of “change,” what does being the party in power mean?

Palin’s acceptance speech (which wowed the delegates inside the hall and entranced many viewers watching on television) was the highlight—or the low point—of this sordid transformation.

* * *
One of Palin’s best lines was the “two memoirs and no law passed” jibe (or jab) at Barack Obama. “But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform—not even in the state senate.”

It may be that the Alaska governor was merely following party strategy in painting the Democratic candidate for president as an out-of-touch, Eastern-elitist celebrity writer (with two bestselling books to his name). But it could also be that Palin, in trashing Obama for writing books allegedly at the expense of his official responsibilities, was in fact acting out of instinct. She did, after all, ask a government librarian after she took office if she was open to banning certain books from the library.

Both journalists and bloggers have dissected the lie in her assertion: Obama has in fact authored reform legislation in both the Illinois State Senate and in the US Senate. One such law, for instance, was co-authored by Sen. Richard Lugar, a gray eminence in the Republican Party.

But Palin did not only fabricate facts; she also confused them.

Obama did not write two memoirs, but just one: his first book, “Dreams from My Father.” His second book, “The Audacity of Hope,” is what is known in the trade as a thumbsucker, a think piece. Rooted in his experience, yes, but hardly a book of reminiscences.

A US senator did write two memoirs: John McCain. “The Faith of My Fathers” centers on his experience as a prisoner of war. “Worth the Fighting For” takes up from where he left off, at the beginning of his storied political career.

* * *
Palin also mocked Obama’s previous career as a community organizer, implying it wasn’t a real job. “I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.”

A good line, if we don’t care about the truth. (The comedian/fake TV reporter Stephen Colbert caught the true nature of the beast that has run wild during the Bush years when he coined the fake concept of “truthiness.”)

As it happens, the best riposte to this condescending attitude to social workers and community organizers is a line I first stumbled upon in Facebook. “Jesus was a community organizer; Pontius Pilate was a governor.”

Everything about the Palin speech was designed to appeal to this sense of truthiness: hence the glib but grossly inaccurate putdown of Obama’s two memoirs, the glib but fictional account of the governor’s alleged opposition to the so-called “Bridge to Nowhere.” (She was for it before she was against it.)

That such fakery can work its superficial magic, despite Dubya’s dubious example—it is astounding.

I wouldn’t be surprised if what may have been Palin’s most effective moment, the pause-and-point to the “Hockey Mom” placards in the convention hall and then the now famous “lipstick” joke, turned out to be scripted too.

* * *
To be sure, the Palin appointment is a true game changer; the dynamics of the 2008 elections have changed dramatically. The question is: Why did McCain change the game plan when it was working for him? The conservative base of the Republican Party has been resurrected; but so has the Democrats’ own base.

After McCain named Palin as his running mate, the Republicans received something like $10 million in new campaign donations. But after Palin gave her acceptance speech, the Democrats too received something like $10 million.

Lastly a little history lesson: Pay attention Media!

Dwight Eisenhower,(a great president)said: “No one should ever sit in this office over 70 years old, and that I know.”

And Ulysses Grant (a war hero) was an AWFUL president!
Learned this in high school history class 3 decades ago. Per Wikipedia: Presidential experts typically rank Grant in the lowest quartile of U.S. presidents, primarily for his tolerance of corruption. Sound familiar?  I would say comparable to McBush as far as croniesm.

So, let's all go out there and canvass for Obama! We NEED to get our country back from the likes of Bush/Cheney/McShame/Palen/Rove.

Sounds like another BUSH to me.

I simply say, "N-O" to her, mccain and bush.

No Beauty and the Beast ticket this year!

The "Palin Doctrine" -- you're with her or against her -- sounds vaguely familiar. (And not in a good way.) Hmmm, who else said something like that?!?
Scary person.  Stay as far away as possible.
And Palin's moral compass says that you have to lie as much as you can to achieve your ambitions. And there is no penalty/sin to outright lying, for hypocrisy is the tool best utilized when trying to achieve one's political ambitions.
Can you imagine this woman meeting with a Putin or a Prime Minister Brown?  Maybe she can captivate them with her stories of fishing or hunting.  I can't believe that Sen. McCain, after all his years in politics, picked someone like this over Pawlenty or Romney.  What was he thinking or maybe he was having a senior moment!  The thought of Sarah Palin as VP is seriously scary.  It would be better to not vote than to vote for McCain/Palin.  I can only hope that voters wise up before it's too late.
Geez did anyone notice that except for a select few everyone on here attacks Palin and loves Obama ,and they end up talking mainly to each other convincing noone but themselves that Obama Good -Palin -bad. Sad desparate, and pathetic. What have the once arrogant Obamatrons become but whining shells basking in their own fears and self pity. Sad.......  NOT  BWAHAAAAAhHa
Is this a book review or a promotion? Hard to tell...well, I'm not interested in finding out any more information about a woman who puts SELF first over the wellbeing of her family and her country.

--working professional woman (educator for 20 years), mother of 2, Christian white lady voting for Obama/Biden!!!
The citizens of Alaska who know Sarah Palin best speak out.

http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/14/alaska-women-reject-palin-rally-is-huge/
I'm an independent moderate voter who, until today, was not committed to voting for either candidate. McCain/Palin's repeated intentional mistatements of facts are morally and ethically repugnant. Palin's speech equating herself to Harry Truman is both laughable and offensive. What I see here is ticket of sarcastic, shallow, liars who will do or say anything to win. NOT THIS TIME AMERICA
I can picture Bush as Dr.Evil from Austin Powers movie and Sarah Palin as Minime echoing every word and thought that George Bush verbalizes. Isn't 8 years of incompetence enough??
Pesonally I think this is one strange lady joining one goofball man.  I find it hard to beleive that Obama is asking his supporters to help the victims in the red state of Texas when Palin with all her oil in alaska and cindy with 100 million dollars can't find a way to to get gas to them.  Pay China you have the money. These people are suffering and you would think with it being a red state the repukes would help, no Obama is asking his supporters.  Sad very Sad way to go McNuts and Moosetracks.  And by the way your kids names are as nuts as you are.  yeah I already know you won't post FR!!!
Ho Hummm.
Could we expect anything else?
How about the headline on CNN that rove stated
mccain may hve gone overboard on his ads.
Isn't that the kettle caling the skillet black?
If ever the saying "fake it 'til you make it" fit...

It's okay, there's nothing too pressing going on in this country or the world that we don't have time to wait for Ms. Palin to catch up on world affairs. The economy can wait, and, heck, global warming may take decades longer before it's actually too late to do anything about it. So don't worry, Sarah. It doesn't matter that you're not ready (or really all that fascinated by world events, or science, or education, or economics). We have all the time in the world to wait until you are.
137 pages... LARGE FONT???

Please, people!

There was a good investigative piece in the NY Times yesterday about Palin's record in Alaska: she often hired friends and schoolmates for state jobs, and she was quick to intimidate those who she thought were getting in her way.

Excerpts and a link to the full article here: http://torqopia.blogspot.com/2008/09/palins-ambition.html
I watched the "Palin Revealed" segement on CNN.
I was really amazed that the major portion of the program focused on Palin's life as a child and her supposed "basektball" stardom in high school, and her beauty pagent stuff.   It was a nice story, but beyond being a basketball player in a school where, most likely, every girl in school made the team (I raised kids in a small town, I know exactly how it works with sports).  The rest of the story showed her "limited" time on the political scene.
I was struck by the realization that everybody who has kids has a home video just like the one they showed.
This woman is in NO WAY prepared to take on the job of VP.  She doesn't have the experience, she couldn't possibly have obtained it.  She hasn't been in office long enough, hasn't been enough time nor has she been exposed to anything remotely close to what the Pres or VP of this country will have to deal with.  To try to make us believe otherwise is ludicrous.  I keep hearing people who like Palin say "she is just like us".  That is probably true.  And most of us are NOT READY to be VP.  That is the fatal flaw in voting for someone  you perceive to be "just like you".
We need someone who is  extraordinary if we are to have any hope of getting out the mess this country is in.
Does the book mention when it was God started telling her directly about His plans for us in Iraq? And while I'm on the topic, if this is all "God's will," why is it taking so long and being done so stupidly? And did God intend for a few multinational companies to make a KILLING on the Iraqi war?

My question to "Save Us" Sarah is: does God get personally involved in the financial aspects, or is He strictly a political policy, "ends justify the means" guy?
Who gives a hoot about her anyway?  She's just a joke with no punch line. I hope that common sense doesn't take a vacation in this country....but actually it's been on an extended one for the last 8 years.
You think there's a problem in congress now.  Wait until Palin is VP.  She is going to attack the Democrats like a Pitbull.  This biography of Palin is just another indication on how she will shake up Washington to the delight of the Republicans.  The havoc McCain will induce will be at a world level.  I just can't believe the American people are going to give the Republicans a third chance to strike-out at the plate.  The Clintons, who bloodied Obama and supplied the intelligence for the Republican attack strategy against him, will not get their hands on the presidency. This is because of informed voters like me who don't forget or because America has experienced poisonous mushrooms flown in from Russia, paid for by the McCain Administration.
