McCain: Economy still 'strong'

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Addressing today’s news of upheaval in America’s financial markets, McCain said this morning that, despite fears over the "turmoil" on Wall Street, “the fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

“But,” he added, “These are very, very difficult times."

VIDEO: Campaigning in Florida, John McCain says that though 'the fundamentals of the economy are strong,' his administration would bring regulatory reform and transparency to financial markets.

The Obama campaign seized on the statement, contrasting it with McCain's new ad -- "Crisis" -- which paints a more foreboding picture of the American economy.

"That shows that he is extraordinarily out of touch," said campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor. "It's even more surprising when you look at his ad today that shows the economy in crisis, that's the lead of his ad.”

In addressing the Wall Street troubles today, McCain criticized the existing system of oversight over financial markets and voiced his opposition to a bailout of Lehman brothers funded by taxpayer dollars.

“We’ve got to take every action to build an environment of robust energy supplies, lower inflation, controlled healthcare costs, access to international markets, low taxes and reduced burden of government to allow people to move forward toward a future of prosperity,” McCain said. “A McCain-Palin administration will replace the outdated, patchwork quilt of regulatory oversight and bring transparency and accountability to Wall Street.”

Government efforts, added the Arizona senator, should be focused on “ensuring that the deposits of hardworking Americans are protected and the taxpayers are not involved.”

Characteristically, McCain said that spending was the problem in Washington, but he corrected a statement he made on ‘The View’ last week where he said Palin had not requested any earmarks as governor.

“Every year she’s been in office Governor Palin has cut those [earmark] requests and she’s vetoed a half a billion dollars in wasteful spending in office,” he said today, while also criticizing Obama for his earmark requests.

Although the substance of his other attacks on Obama today were similar to other days, he introduced them by dismissing his opponent’s recent “insults.”

“Friends, Senator Obama’s been saying some pretty nasty things about Governor Palin and me,” McCain said. “That’s okay. That’s okay. He can attack if he wants but all the insults in the world aren’t going to bring change to Washington and they’re not going to change Senator Obama’s record.”

At his first solo campaign rally since announcing Palin as his running mate, McCain drew a crowd of roughly 3,000 people in the 16,000-seat Veterans Memorial Arena here this morning. According to local reports, the event was originally planned as a pancake breakfast at the local fairgrounds but was moved when crowd interest exceeded the fairgrounds capacity.

Why are we determined to jump off a bridge? Palin recycles the same speech, McCain could care less about the economy. All I know is McCain is a POW and that will magically fix the economy.
Just saw Palin on MSNBC in Colorado...Still lying about Bridge to Nowhere and the jet on EBAY....PLEASE FR....make your comments about today's speech by Palin....SHE IS OFF HER ROCKER!!!!
First it's in crisis..now it's fundementally sound.  If people cant see this dolt for the liar he is, we deserve the h*ll he will make this country.
So, in other words, for SOME Americans it's a strong economy and there is nothing to worry about, but for SOME Americans, it's rough times coming?

Huh - if only we had some way to figure WHICH Americans were OK, and which Americans were in for hard ride. Dammit! I wish I had an MBA from Harvard - so I could line my bird cage with it (same thing GWB does with the Constitution) and free myself to CONCENTRATE on this EXTREMELY tricky question of which I CERTAIN John "Half truth" McCain is correct.
My friends...stop being a bunch of nattering nabobs of negativism...

The economy is sound if you are a millionaire like me with a 250K welfare check each year from the taxpayers...in the words of my good friend Phil Gramm...

SHUT UP YOU BUNCH OF WHINERS...life is good for me
“Friends, Senator Obama’s been saying some pretty nasty things about Governor Palin and me,”

*blinks*  Actually, no he hasn't.
He eats up and regurgitates the Republican Wall Street yakkers on TV....let's all take a little time and READ more, learn more about economics and Wall Street.
Actually, the pancake breakfast was set up for Palin in Colorado, but I'm sure McCain was thrilled to see as many as 3,000 show up to see him without his pretty sidekick. Of course we don't know if that number is being inflated or not since the McCain camp isn't telling the truth about anything anymore.
Yesirre John McSame.

We need more tax cuts for the same people who have brought us the energy and financial crisis.

The rest of us can eat cake.
This is unbelievable! I feel like I am in the Twilight Zone with the McCain campaign.

Let me ask this question in all seriousness -- Are some of you people really buying what the McCain campaign is offering? Sadly, I know some people will answer yes.

I think the good senator from Rhode Island, Sheldon Whitehouse, said it best today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnJAIeEgjSM

Notice how not one person answered "yes" to his question -- not one person, not one Republican.

Funny, huh? No sad is what it is. Drill, baby, drill -- yup, that will solve everything. *sigh*

Folks, please let's not fall for it this election.
McWar=Draft reinstatement
Palin=Alaska get priority
McLie=More of the same
Palin=New hockey stadiums throughout the Country
McSame=God help us all
Palin=President #44

Don't kid yourself, this little cheerleader will be running the Whitehouse, in fact I'm sure bringing her onto the ticket is a Rove tactic... let McSame run the Country for a year or so, then let Sarah take over...  GOD HELP US ALL.

AMERICA, wake up vote the issues, vote Obama/Biden. Health care reform for everyone, tax breaks for the middle class, social security that will be strong for our kids, and most especially, education that works for everyone.  Obama has the temperament, intelligence and wisdom to bring back our middle class and our standing in the world.

Check out McCain/Palin website and compare it to the Obama/Biden website… if you do, I am so sure you will place your vote with OBAMA/BIDEN.

Use your head, VOTE THE ISSUES…..

OBAMA/BIDEN…CHANGE WE NEED!

hahahaha a pancake breakfast.  i'm sorry, i can't help it. "hey folks, come join john mccain down at the waffle house." hell, count me in!
Mccain and palin are full of crap and if this country wants to continue to dig itself into the ground.... plez vote for mccain cause thats exactly what he's going to do. Its all about personal agenda and gain with mccain and palin. its all about putting friends into office and important roles and increasing the inner circles pockets. But hey thats what the usa is all about anyways, so reap what you sow!
I'm waiting for an article or commentary that points out something all Americans need to wake up and recognize - Obama picked a vice president to help him govern this country in these challenging times, while McCain picked a vice president to help him campaign and somehow pull a fast one over the eyes of America. If heaven help us McCain is elected President of the United States, he has put this country in great peril by putting Palin one step away from being Commander in Chief. His choice clearly shows McCain is not putting "Country First," he's putting "McCain First," and that is extremely alarming and disturbing. We've already had 8 years of a President and Vice President who put themselves and their own interests ahead of this country's. PLEASE AMERICA, WAKE UP AND DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE A THIRD TIME!!!

Just like in the 1890's and in 1929, the Robber Barons of unfettered Laissez Faire and deregulation have shown that they are incapable of self-regulation. Greed, Corruption and Ponzi schemes are the ultimate endgame of right-wing Conservatism.

Like Roosevelt showed (both Teddy & FDR), only government oversight and regulation will keep these free market absolutist thieves from destroying the economy for their own enrichment.
Mccain thinks our economy is still strong??  Maybe for him it is--because he is married to a Billionaire Beer Heiress!  `the working middle class were just barely surviving before, but now with all the Banks failing,  that is a sure sign we are heading for a Depression.
This is typical Rove tactics. Say one thing then do another. Keep them confused and they can'r make an informed decision. Then it comes down to personality. "Who would you want to have a beer with?" I don't want a President that I can have a beer with. I want someone who can make tough decisions and who can stay sool under pressure. That clearly is Obama in this case.
Will someone please buy this old man a clue.  Hell, I'll give him one for free.  Here it is...THE ECONOMY IS NOT STRONG, IT IS TANKING.  NO IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS ABOUT IT.  If you can't understand that, try living like the millions of Americans who don't have their pick of seven houses to live in (and are struggling to keep the one they have).  You'll not that their view of the economy is somewhat less optimistic, and somewhat more personal than yours.  Stop attacking people who are on the ground trying to make things better (community organizers), stop belittling the struggles of average Americans simply because they're not your struggles, and most of all STOP LYING TO US.  IF YOU'RE NOT WILLING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES OF AVERAGE AMERICANS EVERYWHERE (NOT JUST THE ONES THAT YOU WANT TO VOTE FOR YOU), THEN YOU DO NOT DESERVE THE OFFICE OF PRESIDENT.

End clue.

Obama/Biden '08!
Remain calm!  All is well!
Time to reboot old man.  This guy is an idiot....then he's damn rich, pretty darn old, and he's become corrupt in his pursuit of power.  Alan Greenspan even said this is probably a one in a hundred years BAD time economically.  Are any of you undecideds, racists, war supporters, down the ticket republicans so well off that you don't recognize what's happening to those of us who aren't and where the republicans are taking this country?  Damn your blindness is all I have to say.
McCain, you're such a chump. Name one nasty thing that Obama himself has personally said about you or Palin. Everytime I hear Obama speak and he mentions you he always gives you cudos at first for your service to the country. And tne if he does say anything negative about you it is about your policies and positions on the issues.

Neo-cons like to tell Obama if he can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. The same applies to you McCain, and Palin. If you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen and quit whining.

McCain, you're such a chump. And Palin is your little chump-et.
I cannot the continuous coverage of Sarah Palin's stomp speeches, each cable news channels covers her speech from start to end.  Same speech same quotes same bs.  I have almost memorized the speech, with all the times that you see on all networks.  I cannot believe how disinterested the cable news are in real issues, and continue to show this junk.
I hope that this Palin hallucinogen wears off before November 4th because I am an average hard working, middle class female who cannot afford four more years of Republican economics!! Vote with your pocketbook, people!! Only people who make more than $250,000 a year should vote McCain/ Palin.
Maybe Mr. Greenspan can give Sen. McCain a call, and tell him that this is the worst economy in a lifetime, and that we simply cannot afford his paln to finance tax cuts with more debt.  Mr. Greenspan's words, not mine!
I guess if you have so many houses, you can't keep track of them, the economy is strong (for you). I guess if your wife wears $3000 suits, the economy is strong (for you). I guess if your shoes cost $500, the economy is strong (for you). I guess if your monthly balance on a credit card, the economy is strong (for you).

I guess if have an extra part time job to pay for a sick spouse's prescriptions (like me), your economy is not my reality. I guess if you spend an extra hour in traffic a day because schools are better on the other side of town (like me), your economy is not my reality. I guess if you don't mind asking your elderly parents for financial help to buy new school clothes for your kid (like me), your economy is not my reality.
Terri, they are trying their best to keep us distracted , so that we don't realize who this woman REALLY is!  Just look at the covers of all of the rags in the supermarket this week. She is all over them with some not so flattering headlines. Yes, the same rag that ended up being right about John Edwards' affair.
I have yet to see anyone who is voting for McCain tell us if they feel the past 8 Bush years have been successful.  According to nearly every presidential approval poll, about 70% of Americans do NOT think Bush has been successful.  The record shows that John McCain voted WITH the Bush policies over 90% of the time, and he wants to continue those same policies for 4 more years.

In the past 8 years, a budget surplus has been turned into a deficit which now numbers in the trillions.  Approval ratings for America from around the world have dropped to the lowest ever.  The economy is in the worst state since WWII with home foreclosures, bank failures, and high unemployment.

If you are voting for McCain, then you must feel that Bush’s policies have been successful and that you want them to continue for 4 more years.  Please explain, in detail, which of those policies that have led to the above conditions been successful and should be continued?  Be specific…
Strong for who?  The robber oil barrons?  Which country is he talking about?  It sure isn't America!
Palin recycles lies. McCain is so out of touch with the economy and average Americans. McCain says, "I will fight for those who lost their real estate invesments. But I don't believe the American government is here for the small borrower." WOW - what an idiot.

You better investigate this Michigan Republican operative of if you lose your home you lose your vote. These poor folks are being forclosed upon by Republican owned lenders.
WOW-McCain is in all kinds of denial, if people acutally vote for him then they need all kinds of professional help..

Obama/Biden 08
McCain says this morning that the economy is still strong; his current ad says it is in crises.  Hey, John, which is it?
could we please get back to the issues that matter instead of palin's one and only speech
I saw at another site that polling in Ohio may not be accurate because it does not take cell phones into account.

I would like to hear from Chuck if this is true or not, since he is insistant on pushing how well McCain seems to be doing.
McCain is right.  The fundamentals of our capitalist economy ARE still strong.  What's happened is that the "house of cards" that the Demoncrats have built with artificial supports, etc. has prevented the market from incrementally self-regulating, so we have an exaggerated correction from time to time.  And whomever is in power is who gets blamed when the economy tanks(but the Demoncrats have had the pursestrings for a couple of years now - coincidence?).  What McCain needs to do is remind people of WHY he thinks the fundamentals of the economy are strong.  With a good concise explanation, maybe the people would learn something and we'd be more inclined to believe and then vote for him.
Palin talked today about the golden parachutes of those bad ol' CEO's. Almost threw up! Meanwhile, on the very day Lehman Bros. (a financial institution that's been around since before the Civil War) declares bankruptcy, McCain thinks the fundamentals of the economy are strong. And these two are leading in the polls? I must be in the bizzaro world.
bush said our economy is strong enough to withstand the turmoil in the market (note:  turmoil he created); mccain soon after said the economy is fundamentally sound.  try telling that the thousands of workers from these firms who will be losing their jobs by the end of the day today, thousands who will join the millions of others who are searching for work.  let him try and tell that to the children whose college tuition are now in peril and whose daily living will be altered, whose medical benefits will suffer, and to the millions more who will be affected by the maverick policies of both bush and mccain (in addition to palin).

if america does not wake up from its doldrum and still vote mccain/palin, then american gets what it deserves.  china and russia will take over the reign, in addition to iran, syria and pakistan.

scary.
Well it looks like the economy is yet not one of Mcshames strong suits. Bush/McCain or McCain/Palin it's all the same.

Obama/Biden  2008
How can this country trust the most uneducated ticket ever, with the economic crisis? McCain has no college education, and it took Palin 6 years and 6 different colleges to get her BA in journalism.  Whatever.
Can we go a day without looking at and talking about Palin.  She is a VP pick.  Why don't you broadcast Joe's speeches.  Too right wing I guess.  I want to see Palin Produce Her TAX RETURN!!!!  Why aren't you reporting about this like you did Obam and Biden??  Our economy is weak and McCAin is out of touch.  Of course he would be.  The middle class makes 5 million or less.  Go figure and he has no worry with 9 houses in the bank.
What planet is Mccain living on?? Certainly not
ours!!
He supported his friend and advisor, Graham totally
on his deregulation bill which, surprise, gave
big business the right to rape the public.
He has voted against everything to better our
country, middle class America and even the
Veterans.
Voters, we cannot survive Mccain or the republican
leadership one more day!!
Our country is standing on quicksand and will
surely totally sink if we do not stop these
dishonorable, irresponsible, lying republicans.
Darth Palin, a noun, a verb, and thanks but no thanks to the bridge to nowhere.
McCain is CLUELESS when it comes to the economy. He really doesn't get it.

Obama/Biden '08
Oh, boo hoo, boo hoo.

The banks and investment houses that overinflated the housing market can go down in flames.
No more bailouts. No bailouts to begin with.
Time to pay the piper.
The baby-boomer generation is guilty of gutting the economy, social security, and expect near free healthcare as they drag thier smoking, overweight, diabetic carcasses to the grave...
When I look around and see 1 out of 3 cars on the road are SUV's. We aren't in a gas crisis.
Were in a comfort crisis.
Signed a mortgage contract you could not afford. Then or now. Tough. Suck it up. Go rent.
No pity for the greedy.
No pity for the stupid.
It's not time for more socialist handouts and government control of our lives.
It's time for personal responsibility.

Live your life, your family, and your finances in a common sense manner.
I was watching MSN a few minutes ago..They had the nerve to say that people would not relate to Joe Biden because he was well dressed w/ french cuffs..
IS our nation so incredibly stupid that a candidate  must wear a strap-on pot belly to relate to the toothless red necks of this nation ?MSN also mentioned
that people really related to Todd Palin being called "First Dude".....Give me a break...First Rube more accurate...
I wonder how many people of the 3000 left once they realized Palin wasnt there.
Are you kidding me? McCain said this on this day? I must move to Africa if this guy wins this election.
My economy is not strong!  I guess if I left my husband and kids and married a rich heiress to pay my bills and buy 8 houses to live in I wouldn't notice the economy either.  But what does that mean to you?
How is your saving account?  The republicans screw up the economy every time they are in office and it takes a DEMOCRAT to come back in and fix the mess.
We need a DEMOCRAT back in to get us back on track.

ARE YOU BETTER OFF NOW THAN YOU WERE 8 YEARS AGO?

IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID!!
Where is McCain living? Of course for rich people the economy is just fine. Palin well all she knows is the same everyday, she can see Russia from her back yard. People can we just listen to the issues they are talking about and what is the real truth!
“the fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

This is what the Obama camp must hammer home to people.  They need to run an add with video of McCain saying that statement above, with the date stamp for today at the bottom of the screen.
Bush and McCain... the economy is strong."

Wake up folks before these idiots get four more years. This is serious... it is not personalities. My home is devalued by 30% and my saving/retirement has lost 30% and they think things are fine. Are we really that STUPID.

If we vote for McPalin... we deserve four more years.
