McCain: Economy still 'strong'

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Addressing today’s news of upheaval in America’s financial markets, McCain said this morning that, despite fears over the "turmoil" on Wall Street, “the fundamentals of our economy are strong.”

“But,” he added, “These are very, very difficult times."

VIDEO: Campaigning in Florida, John McCain says that though 'the fundamentals of the economy are strong,' his administration would bring regulatory reform and transparency to financial markets.

The Obama campaign seized on the statement, contrasting it with McCain's new ad -- "Crisis" -- which paints a more foreboding picture of the American economy.

"That shows that he is extraordinarily out of touch," said campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor. "It's even more surprising when you look at his ad today that shows the economy in crisis, that's the lead of his ad.”

In addressing the Wall Street troubles today, McCain criticized the existing system of oversight over financial markets and voiced his opposition to a bailout of Lehman brothers funded by taxpayer dollars.

“We’ve got to take every action to build an environment of robust energy supplies, lower inflation, controlled healthcare costs, access to international markets, low taxes and reduced burden of government to allow people to move forward toward a future of prosperity,” McCain said. “A McCain-Palin administration will replace the outdated, patchwork quilt of regulatory oversight and bring transparency and accountability to Wall Street.”

Government efforts, added the Arizona senator, should be focused on “ensuring that the deposits of hardworking Americans are protected and the taxpayers are not involved.”

Characteristically, McCain said that spending was the problem in Washington, but he corrected a statement he made on ‘The View’ last week where he said Palin had not requested any earmarks as governor.

“Every year she’s been in office Governor Palin has cut those [earmark] requests and she’s vetoed a half a billion dollars in wasteful spending in office,” he said today, while also criticizing Obama for his earmark requests.

Although the substance of his other attacks on Obama today were similar to other days, he introduced them by dismissing his opponent’s recent “insults.”

“Friends, Senator Obama’s been saying some pretty nasty things about Governor Palin and me,” McCain said. “That’s okay. That’s okay. He can attack if he wants but all the insults in the world aren’t going to bring change to Washington and they’re not going to change Senator Obama’s record.”

At his first solo campaign rally since announcing Palin as his running mate, McCain drew a crowd of roughly 3,000 people in the 16,000-seat Veterans Memorial Arena here this morning. According to local reports, the event was originally planned as a pancake breakfast at the local fairgrounds but was moved when crowd interest exceeded the fairgrounds capacity.

OH boy! I guess someone needs to inform FOX News and Sean Hannity they were wrong. I would laugh if it wasn't sad that the Republicans have left us in such dire straits and then they have the gaul to ask for 4 more years. Whats worse is people are willing to ignore reality to vote for these people when its obvious they are bold faced liars. It is really sad we have one half of America that is completely delusional.
i just cannot imagine a world wherein Obama/Biden would or could lose to these two

let me rephrase...i CAN imagine this world, b/c that's the world we live in

i just...it's like Bizarro World or something. what is WRONG with us??

i will continue to do a LOT of praying. good lord.
Must have been a little fair grounds. You know a barn and bathroom.According to who's report the bombers campaign? The bomber is  out of touch saying to ecnomony is Strong.Maybe if the wife pulls down 500,000$ a month, like yours does. For someone that does not know how many houses he owens(last I heard was 7)maybe times are grand, but what about the regular people that have to live on there income, how many of them do ya think would agree with your B.S.26 years of doing all he could to help deregulation, you see the results. And have not one plan to stop it.What is really insulting is the way you and the Moosemama have chosen to run Karl Rove's tactics and we have seen that the Moosemama is just another Repuk that has abused her power and lies like a bear rug.
I JUST WATCHED A LAYOFF AT WORK, PEOPLE CRYING OTHERS SITTING AT THERE DESK BECAUSE ANOTHER ROUND IS COMING IN OCTOBER 5. NOW I LOG ON AND SEE MCSAME STATEMENT.  IF HE WINS I WILL HAVE TO DOUBT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE,
The economy is fundamentally strong. I'am Giviner' Palin and I approve of this nonsence. How many houses do you have today John ?
My fellow Americans, I am what you would call a true Independent, I don't vote on party affiliations, One thing that I always find funny is candidates saying that they are going to revamp/reform government and the killer comments is from conservatives who want small government...I would suggest that folks should either travel or read about governments in other countries, I have done some extensive traveling and I guarantee that if one of these conservatives were to spend a week in a country with a small or under developed government, they would be running back to America, begging for more government...what I trying to say is don't just listen to the talking heads, read and understand...also TERM LIMITs for everyone

thanks
Today, McCain said "the fundamentals of our economy are still strong" Well, I don't know about you, but either this is another McCain campaign lie or McCain was correct when he said he "did not know enough about the economy". I am so concerned about the banking system that I am concerned about where to place my CD or about my 401K money in an uninsured mutual fund. Come on McCain, be truthful.
“Friends, Senator Obama’s been saying some pretty nasty things about Governor Palin and me,”

Pot, meet kettle.  McCain has been putting out ridiculous and slanderous ads about Obama that are false or distorted and now he says it is happening to him and Palin.  They are "disrespected" when someone says they are lying when in fact they are lying!  Cindy McCain said The View hosts ripped them to the bone.  They asked questions about the lies they were telling and they lied about the lies.

The most troubling thing about this is that people still yell and clap and think she is wonderful.  News media, you have a job to do.  The country is in danger if these two get in.
Guess what advertisers, this is the first weekend that I did not watch CNN or MSNBC or any cable news outlet.  Get rid of the lying Palin.  I will not watch her.  I made sure all of my tv's were on the weather channel.
McCain/Palin keep suggesting that raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations will take away our jobs.  My question is, aren't the wealthy and corporations operating under the generous Bush tax cuts NOW?  And if so, why have we lost so many jobs in 2008 alone, creating the highest unemployment rate in 5-6 years.  If it's this bad under tax cuts, I am all for taxing the rich and using that money to truly create new jobs.
McCain lying again.  What will he think of next.
The "Missiles of October" will come early with such depth of foreign policy, national security, and economics the McCain/Palin Admin. will bring to the WH.  And it will not really be them bringing it.  It will be the organ grinders who were at the side of McCain before the Palin choice.  They have slipped behind the curtains waiting to manipulate the Bush/Grahm/LIEberman puppet-clone and his fast-study Pitbull.
If Palin/McCain, in that order, is elected in November, the media will have to shoulder a lot of the blame.  Constantly talking up and defending Palin as if she were some first rate politician with the experience to run a country, any country, is so ridiculous, biased and exactly what McCain needs and the media is happy to comply.  I only wish the media would stop insulting my intelligence by shoving Palin down my throat on a daily basis.  I want to hear more about Obama and less about Palin/McCain.  It's time.  And what is c.todd talking about in an earlier post anyway, he says the campaign doing the whining never wins, well with the help of the media, Palin/McCain can whine all they want and still be ahead in the polls.  Now thats media bias.....for McCain.
Let's be frank about all of this. It is no longer about issues but about what we want in the white house.A white guy or a black guy.
Unfortunately, Ameerica is not ready to put the better candidate there yet, maybe in another 100 years. Meanwhile american credibility goes down another several notches.
When you read this stuff you have to wonder how the polls could show a tie. McCain-Palin will set this country back even further then GWB has done over the last 8 years. The folks in the red states need to start thinking for themselves and get off this sexism BS.
FR, it has been revealed that the supposed "fact finding" mission Obama went on was really used to pressure Petraeus and Iraqis into manipulating troop withdrawal for his political benefit. WE the taxpayers paid for that stunt.  Where's the story and where's the outrage of the public that we paid for this crap?
When is MSNBC and the other news-gathering organizations going to "grow a pair" and begin to cover McCain and Palin in a way that sticks to the hard issues?  It's time they earn those broadcast journalism degrees!  As a former Syracuse grad, I pray  to God none of them attended the Newhouse School of Communications.

If I had a $100 million money tree I would probably think the economy was strong too. I've been blogging.
How is it possible that McCain may win this election?

All he does is lie.  He has no clue on fixing the economy.

Are Americans really this stupid?
Here we go with the doubletalk express again!  What does it say about McCain that his lead economic advisor helped create legistation that lead to this latest economic crisis? Isn't this the second time he's been linked to a banking scandal(remember the Keating 5). What does it say about McCain that he spends no time vetting his running mate and then sends lawyers to help stall an ethic investigation? It says to me he makes rash decisions and has bad judgement! Can you really say the same about Obama?
DV, CA has the best answer yet.

"First it's in crisis..now it's fundementally sound.  If people cant see this dolt for the liar he is, we deserve the h*ll he will make this country."

The Roman Empire was not conquered by another country. It felled within it's own ranks.

That's where we're headed people with the McCain-Palin nomination.

The republicans can say anything they want. Obama is trapped in the "Jackie Robinson" box.

He can play the game on a much higher level than McCain can only dream of but Obama has to be this subservient "Black Man" with the subservient attitude.

Don't scare people too much Mr. Obama with your black confidence!
McCain: With your seven houses, credit card expense of $750,000 per month (one card), private plane, trophy wife, millionaire lifestyle -- you have been blinded by your massive fortune, while 95% of Americans suffer under the Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin policies.  The nightmares of Vietnam have really, really clouded your judgment.  McCain is so senile and out of touch.  Anyone that casts their vote for this befuddling 72 year old man is as senile as he is.
Republican VIP PICK!
The whole Palin speech, every time we have to listen to it, it's like a cracked record,ie.,CNN, MSNBC, FOX,...Why do this pin-heads think we need. Some Palin Psychological Conditioning?
Give me a break!
McCain and the rest of the Republicans fiddle while America's economy burns...
Unbelievable.  McCain really is out of touch.
Delusional.
I wish the media would stop putting Giuliani in the spotlight. He is a disgrace to all Americans and especially the memory of those who lost their life on 9/11...Now with that said McCain's speech is just another example of what Obama/Biden have been saying all along. He doesn't have a freaking clue. Has he even talked to ANYONE who lost their jobs and is having a hard time with unemployment or trying to make ends meet on a daily basis ? 84,000 people have lost their jobs last month. How many has he sat down with ? How many middle class Americans who are having a hard time right now that make too much money for government assistance, but are not rich enough to get by in basic things with inflating prices like gas, milk, bread etc ? How many college students has he spoken with about not being able to afford education and qualify for good schools ? How many people has he spoken too about the health care crisis and losing their homes in order to get medical treatment? There are plenty of videos available of Obama doing it, but not one single thing on McCain. Anyone can give a good speech behind a podium, but it doesn't mean a hill of beans if you don't go directly in the town and get down in the face of these people affected. He doesn't give a rat's behind and America needs to wake up and realize that a pair of glasses and lipstick is not the solution !
That tells me he never buys gas , food , insurance , or has to pay any medical bills , god knows he gets free beer , yes life is good , for a man that wrote a book called unfinished business , wants to go to the white house , to change , please vote
