Biden labels McCain 'Bush 44'

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. -- In his first major speech since accepting the vice presidential nomination in August, Biden said that the McCain he once knew has been replaced by a new McCain, one who should really be called “Bush 44.”

“Folks, we’ve seen this movie before,” Biden said, reminding voters what George Bush had promised reform and a new tone in Washington as a candidate, but failed to deliver. “And we know, the sequel is always worse than the original.”

VIDEO: Sen. Joe Biden says Sen. John McCain's economic plan would provide additional tax breaks for the rich and the oil industry while hurting the middle class.

Speaking here in Macomb County, referred to as the heart of Reagan Democratic terrain, Biden focused primarily on the economy, pouncing especially on McCain saying again today that he fundamentals of the economy remain strong.

“That’s what John said,” Biden assured a booing crowd. “He says that, ‘We’ve made great progress economically’ in the Bush years. Ladies and gentlemen, ladies and gentlemen, I could walk from here to Lansing, and I wouldn’t run into a single person who thought our economy was doing well -- unless I ran into John McCain.”

Biden also referred to McCain once saying he did not understand the economy as well as he should, and he said McCain proved it by seeking advice from the likes of Phil Gramm and others, who have "cocooned" him from what middle-class Americans really face today.

"Remember, John’s the guy who when asked define the middle class said below $5 million in income," he said.

The speech was the first of two so-called framing speeches, in which Biden would use his longstanding friendship with McCain as ammo to remind voters of his true positions.

“I promise you, there is simply no daylight between John McCain and George Bush -- at least none that I’ve been able to discern,” he said. “Don’t take my word for it, look John McCain’s record. Ninety percent of the time, John has voted with George Bush.”

He specifically pointed to his support for privatizing Social Security, to opposing an investigation of Hurricane Katrina, and to a health-care plan that would tax the benefits Americans receive from their employers.

And although Biden said he remains McCain’s friend, he said he’s most disappointed with how he’s running his campaign today, one that he said distracts voters from the real issues -- just as voters need to make a serious decision. He said it’s reminiscent of the attacks McCain faced himself in 2000, but that he’s now employing some of the same people who executed them.

“What really bothers me is that every punch that’s thrown at us -- it’s an attempt to distract you, to distract the American people from the very important issues that face this country,” he said. “It’s disappointing to me, it’s disappointing to me literally to think that the guy I knew, John McCain really does approve this message, as he says at the end of every one of these things.”

Biden closed by offering in brief some of the Obama-Biden ticket’s plans, which he said are based on the idea that this generation should leave the nation in a better place than it found.

“This is what we mean when we talk about change. This is the change we need,” he said. “And yes, this campaign is about change. But it’s even about more than that. It’s about what we value as a people. It’s not just about jobs; it’s about dignity. It’s not just about a paycheck; it’s about pride. It’s not just about opportunity; it’s about respect.”

What Biden did not make much mention of was Palin. He did invoke her name, however, in referring an attack line she has used to attack the Democratic ticket, saying all senators do is vote. He countered by recalling many of McCain’s votes, against the crime bill, against funding of renewable energy, and against education benefits for National Guardsmen.

“All I can say is, to Sarah Palin, thank god John McCain’s votes didn’t count in the majority on all of those issues,” he said.

The McCain campaign responded by calling Biden’s comments “ridiculous” and “not credible,” and said the Democrats’ economic plan “raises taxes, kill jobs, increases spending.”

“It’s salesmanship not leadership for Barack Obama and his running mate to tell families in Michigan that they have plans to aid the middle class when they recently both voted in favor of higher taxes,” said McCain spokesman Ben Porritt.

Way to go Joe for calling McSame "Bush 44".  About time the media starts paying attention to this great VP candidate instead of that incompetent liar from Alaska.

I've noticed how "Bush Hugger" McCain is now repeating the same lie that "NeoNazi" Bush keeps saying, that the "economic fundamentals are strong".  If they were strong we wouldn't be witnessing the worst banking crisis since the Depression.

I get a laugh at how now "Big Bank" McCain is saying that the banking industry needs more government regulation, accountability and transparency when he's made a 26 year career out of doing exactly the opposite as he does what his big banking lobbyist pals bribe him to do.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
McCain and the Republicans are playing the same dirty games that were played during the Bush campaign. If McCain wins, woe to the US. It will be worse than the last eight years and the last eight years have been very bad for the middle and lower classes and continue to be so.
The economy is down, but not as bad as Obama wants you to believe. This happens every time a 8 yr president leaves office. The market becomes unstable and the economy slumps. It will all change for the better  once McCain is elected. The public fears will subside and things will pick back up.
Watch and see !
When you underestimate your opponent, you get in trouble, right?  Well Obama seriously underestimated McCain when he chose Biden.  I saw a woman pick coming a mile away with McCain.

Wonder why Barack went to Bill Clinton's office for lunch last week in Harlem?  I heard a big, steamy plate of irony was served up.
Boy this whole "raises taxes, kills jobs and increases spending" line is getting really old. McCain should be pressed about his own plan which in its entirety is simply to cut pork barrel spending.
When someone doesn't show up for work or fails to do their job...you fire them. Pink slips for Republicans.
Someone please confirm or debunk McCain campaign sending out phoney absentee voter material in order to disqualify democrats.
Great content, great delivery- really sounds like we're taken seriously. Great job Joe!
Does that mean IF Barack wins he will be called "Carter 44"?
Parakeet Palin needs a new speech this one is as old & tired as she is!! I mean is this for real??  I feel like I've entered the Twilight Zone!

PS: I was canvassing deep in the heart of McCreepy territory in Southern WI this weekend - and was elated to see that there are many Obama supporters living there as well... so don't belive 'everything' the MSM spews out... after all they're trying to keep this a 'tight race!!'

ENOUGH!!

Obama/Biden This is OUR Time!
Let's hope the Palin hallucinogen wears off before November 4th. I am beginning to believe that 75 % of the general population could be homeless and they would still vote for the Party who gives Donald Trump and Bill Gates tax relief!! Do McCain and Palin emit some sort of hypnotic messages that I can't see?
Finally back to the issues again. I am glad that McCain is now forced to talk about the economy. To give us something real to discuss.
It's pretty ironic that the McCain campaign's response to Joe Biden (who seems to have struck just the right tone and substance), in one breath included the phrase "not credible," followed by the universally discredited claim that Sen. Obama will raise taxes on everyone generally.  "Not credible" indeed...
www.obamataxcut.com

really, just go and see who wants to raise taxes

and what ever you do - don't mention that McCain wants to TAX employer's contributions on benefits - approx. $2000 for most families

No Thanks !
The McCain camp will lie and hope the MEDIA will accept what is said as fact. In this election the MEDIA will be responsible for reporting what is true.  It is unethical for journalist to report half-truths as full truths.   Obama/Biden will state the facts and Americans will become informed and vote against the McCain/Palin/Bush lies.
It's about friggin' time, Joe !!!  This election is not about Caribou Barbie, it's about Bush 44 - who is fundamentally wrong, not strong, on the economy, energy, health care, and foreign policy.

Hit him hard on the economy !!!  Hit him hard on the lies !!!  Be relentless !!!  He cannot be allowed to continue to hide behind someone's skirt !!!
I enjoyed seeing msnbc tv cover Joe's speech live but was very disappointed that it did not show any of Obama's rally speech live.  Both of the Dumb and Dumber ticket were shown live on msnbc tv but not Obama.  No we got Paulson live lying to us about how strong the economic fundamentals are even as Wall Street melts down yet again.

I'm glad that First Read is doing better at giving Obama/Biden some good coverage!

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
So all McCain can do in response is LIE.

McWar and Palin are a couple of professional liars. There statements have been proven as lies, yet they don't blink when they keep repeating them. Is this what you want. Another bunch of bold-faced liars in the white house?
Right, keep using the same tired line that this is going to be a 3rd Bush term - it won't be, but keep the same tired line up Joe.
Repub response *Cute and Paste standard answer*

Is it that they have a hive mind in the republican campaign, or do they just not hire bright people?
It's no more than the truth! I see NO difference between this supposed "maverick" and Bush.
Joe you're right. This McCain is definately not the one I was planning to vote for. I don't know exactly when did all the lies started but right now I can't even look at him. The first time I voted was in 1972 and I have only voted republican after that.

But for the first time I'm voting for a democrat! It hurts me a little bit but I know that Barack is the most honest candidate I've ever known.

Obama/Biden 08 and 12!!!
John McCain also said he had read Greenspan's book on the economy........and what is Greenspan saying about John's economic plan?  America, you need to wake up and smell the coffee.
Biden is right. McCain/Bush are the ones Obama is running against this Nov. McCain thinks that by putting Palin on the ticket he will get women to vote for him although he is not infavor of equal pay for women.

Vote Your Hopes Not Your Fears
McCain camp still don't get it. The economy is not strong when lehman brothers filed bankruptcy, Merrill-Lynch is sold to Bank of American and AIG is about to faulty. The market is doing terribly today almost losing 300 points in the dow. This effects the economy and jobs. It is sad to see people leaving lehman brothers with duffle bags and boxes that contain their belongings. There is no jobs, gas is almost $4.00 again thanks to the hurricane ike, food is expensive, foreclosures have risen etc. The economy is in shambles. McCain's advior Phill Grahm created the sumbprime mortage crisis and the enron loophole that prevents regulations on trading energy. How can he change the economy when his advisors created this mess.Greenspan said McCain's plans will hurt the economy. Wake up people. Enough is Enough.
If nothing else, Bush/Rove/McCain will generate positive re-evaluations, by comparison, of Hoover's economic savvy and Nixon's campaign ethics.
"It’s about what we value as a people. It’s not just about jobs; it’s about dignity. It’s not just about a paycheck; it’s about pride. It’s not just about opportunity; it’s about respect.”

These men "get it"--McCain/Palin do not!

I see the response from McCain's camp is composed of the same old, tired, trotted-out talking points...there's no basis of truth for any of them.

Even a FOX News commentator called Tucker Bounds on the complete lack of veracity in the "raising taxes on the middle class" claim he's making against Obama. The Republicans may not WANT this campaign to be about issues, but IT IS.

The lying has risen to a point of absolute idiocy and self destruction on McCain's part. I think he's doing as well as he's going to do in the polls right now, which isn't saying much. I see trends turning in Obama's overall favor again very soon.

The combination of McCain/Palin's lies + no substance + copycat/pouter mentality only has so much life, only so many news cycles. The debates will establish this in short order.

Go Obama/Biden '08/'12

McCAIN/PALIN: NO HONOR/CAN'T BE TRUSTED!
McCain=Bush=torture=treason
OF COURSE HE'S "BUSH 44"!  You don't even have to listen to anything McCain is SAYING on the campaign trail to understand that -all you have to do is look at the way he's running that campaign.

It's the same disgusting playbook, by the exact same people who installed GWB!  Claim to be above the fray, pay lip service to running a "respectable campaign", then turn right around and do the opposite.  And when anyone points out what a lying hypocrite you are, blame THEM for taking you to task.

Stubborn, self-contradicting, recalcitrant even when proven again and again to be a bald-faced liar... Yep.  "Bush 44" is an apt pseudonym!
This country needs LESS leadership digging deeper into the Bush/McCain hole.
With the condition the country is in right now, gas prices up, groceries and food way up, unemployment, the market down, jobs gone overseas, etc, etc, I don't understand how anyone could even consider voting for McCain and the Republicans. When is enough, enough people? Do we want the United States of American to become just another third world country? Wake up and smell the coffee.
Go get'um Joe!  One needs only read his autobiography "Promises to Keep" to see what a true advocate of his middle class roots he has remained!  He can help President Obama govern, unlike Ms. Palin who can only show McCain how to field dress a moose!
This is what we need to be talking about.  This is the kind of stuff the media needs to cover.  I think the media has done a sufficient job in calling out McCain and Palin on their lies!  But enough of that.  We need to get back to talking about the issues.  That is what we should all be voting on.  If anyone from the media who has any control, is reading this...Please stop talking about Sarah Palin!  She won't even talk to you.  And after her interview with Charlie Gibson, she probably will continue to blow you off.  I am soooooo sick of these conservative pundits who keep saying she did a good job in her interview.  Pundits like Bay Buchanan who say, "She's great, she's just like me.  She doesn't know what the Bust Doctrine is."  Call me crazy, I'm a smart woman, but I don't want someone just like me in the White House!  I want someone who is smarter than me!!!!!  We've already had to endure eight years of having someone stupid in the White House.  Please, NO MORE!

P.S.
Keith Olberman, will you marry me!
This from a man (Biden) who apparently doesn't realize that his campaign is in a recession.

Speaking of financial matters, anyone notice that $500 million isn't going to do it?  So far, every dollar you've sent to Obama has bought you a tie. You need to shoot for a billion.

Keep sending it in, folks.  Obama, true to political form, will keep asking for more and spending it all.

To paraphrase the Doritos commercial: "Send all you want, we'll take more."
Whats the difference between George Bush and Sarah Palin??

LIPSTICK!!!
Bush Economics = current mess we are in

Alan Greenspan - we cannot afford the McCain tax reductions for corporations and wealthy
Alan Greenspan - this is the worst economy I have seen
Lehman Bros. - Bankrupt
Merrill - had to sell

McCain Economics = Bush Economics
This is what Biden and Obama must do every day.  Hit McCain on hard.  People need to hear the details over and over before they get it.  It isn't just that McCain agrees with Bush.  They must champion their tax cuts for 95% of Americans and hammer home that trickle down economics hasn't and won't work.  They must reiterate over and over that it is they who represent the middle classes econmic interests.  They must show that McCain "the reformer" is laughable given who runs his campaign.  They need to fight back on the GOP areguement of tax and spend and let the people know the are going to invest in our country's future by restoring tax fairness.
I hear McCain is backpedalling to say he meant The American Worker is strong.............Only if he has a job, John, only if he has a job.
Stay on message Sen.Biden. If asked by journalists or media to comment on some irrelevant topic, revert back to the issues that Americans care about, that the McCain campaign wants to avoid talking about.

Enough of this nonsense. We do need Change:
Change from tax cuts to rich and wealthy from money borrowed from China
Change from using emergency rooms as health insurance. All industrialized countries have national healthcare (Japan, Canada, UK for example). It is time Americans get one. This will help small businesses as well.
Change from only focusing on oil, nuclear and coal and expaning alternate energy sources like wind, solar and biofuels.
Change from education where money is taken from public schools to money spent on public schools to teach science and math
Bush 44, Thanks but no Thanks!

Joe Biden knows the real McCain who has sold his soul and abandoned his honor in order to win an election. Joe is just getting warmed up folks. I expect him to show the people who the real credible VP candidate is now and in the debates

As it was in '92, It's the economy stupid!  The lack of coherent energy or foreign policy combined with the GOP laisee faire economic has seriously damaged us as a nation. The jobless claims keep rising along with the gas prices and the home foreclosures.

So what does the GOP promise, reform? Of what type? Will Palin help eliminate the earmarks culture or just pretend to change it at the top level?

We've heard this all before folks Time for real change in the way DC does the people's business!

Obama-Biden '08
I guess we as Americans will get the leaders we deserve. If we don't pay attention and really educate ourselves, we will just continue to follow the same path of being led by lies and fear. Serously - can you say the United States is in better shape (in ANY way) than we were 8 years ago? And haven't we learned that voting for someone because we would like to have a beer with them - or they "seem like me" is not necessarily a good idea? Oh well....
Nice job Joe, way to keep focused on how the McCain campaign of lies and deceptions affects the voters.  If the McCain/Palin campaign can be shown to be not only deceptive but also harmful to working people there is no way Obama/Biden can lose.
"He specifically pointed to his support for privatizing Social Security,"

George Bush never supported privatizing Social Security and neither did John McCain.
Oh my goodness I love Sen. Biden.  Yeah I know hes not pretty, I am sure he does know how to shoot a gun, I am also sure he prays. Now about being the Vice President, Joe Biden is a real vp in waiting
he is knowledgeable in every aspect of our government.
If something were to happen to Obama we wouldnt be awake nights wondering what Todd and Sarah were up to.
Senator Biden you are our guy, you will be a real partner to our next President, a real addition to any
administration.

No way
No how
No McCain

Marty
“And we know, the sequel is always worse than the original.”
------------------------------------------------------

Brilliant!!! That says it all.

Obama/Biden '08
Biden is really putting out some sensational talking points. Dems should be absolutely running to the press some of his messages -- like Bush '44. He is really superb. A great campaigner who can actually think and possesses relevant knowledge to govern. Speaks to the kind of judgement I want from a President.
If the Repubs think Michigan will vote for McCain....guess again.....people are starving in this state....I have NEVER seen it as bad as it is and I am only 35 years of age.....Also, I commute 1 hour each way to and from work....I have maybe seen 3 McCain stickers....Obama Stickers...including the one on my car.....too many to count!!!!!

Obama/Biden the change MICHIGAN can believe in!!!!
How original Joe! Did you think of this one by yourself, or did you plagiarize it from someone else?
"Time to get up" Biden told the crowd, and the crowd went crazy!!

I'm so glad the Obama campaign finally unleashed Biden.  Go get 'em Joe!
As I continue to watch the Mccain/Palin(Dumb and Dumber) campaign it becomes more evident every day that they do not have a clue on the economy or what is best for the middle class. Don't let them steal this election by campaigning with distractions like Bush/Cheney.
