Colin Powell remains undecided

Posted: Monday, September 15, 2008 7:17 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Libby Leist
Colin Powell, the first African-American Secretary of State, said this afternoon that electing an African-American US president would be “electrifying” for the world, but he said he still remains undecided between McCain and Obama.

Appearing today at George Washington University with four other former US Secretaries of State -- Madeleine Albright, James Baker, Warren Christopher, and Henry Kissinger -- Powell and the panel were asked by a student whether they thought America electing Obama president would send a more powerful image overseas than John McCain.

Baker and Albright spoke first and said they both thought it would be significant, but Baker noted he was still voting Republican. “I think electing the first African-American president would send a powerful message not just abroad but in this country as well. Having said that I have, of course, endorsed Sen. McCain,” Baker said to much laughter.

Albright followed up and got a huge round of applause from the college audience for her presidential choice. “I think it would send a huge message in terms of what America stands for and in terms of diversity and potential. And I, of course, am supporting Sen. Obama,” she said.

Then came Powell. “[T]o send that kind of a message, I think would be electrifying,” he said, “but at the same time, we have to make a judgment here ... which of the candidates blends a right measure of experience and judgment? I have been watching both of these individuals, and I know them both extremely well and I have not decided who I’m going to vote for yet.”

Powell said he wants to watch the debates, look at the party platforms, and focus on substance. "We've got to get off this lipstick on a pig stuff," he said to loud applause.

When one of the moderators asked Powell whether this vote was personal to him since he was the first African-American Secretary of State, his answer sparked wild applause. "I'm an American first and foremost," he said.

Powell explained to the audience that he told McCain he would not vote for him just because they have been friends for 25 years, and he told Obama he would not vote for him just because he is black. He said he will look at who has the best economic policies, who inspires the most confidence in the country and around the world, and who will keep America safe.

The 90-minute forum, to air next weekend on CNN, focused on the full range of foreign policy issues that will confront McCain or Obama: Russia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Middle East peace, Africa, climate change, and torture.

There was bipartisan consensus from the Secretaries of State that the next President needs to work to restore America’s image and influence in the world and recapture American power, after eight years of an unpopular George W. Bush.

Some of the advice for President McCain or President Obama on how American can restore world confidence: close Guantanamo Bay, outlaw torture, engage Iran, and take the lead on climate change with a new US policy.

In the afternoon’s only reference to GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin, the Secretaries of State were asked if they were in consensus that human beings are contributing to global warming. Albright drew laughter and applause when she quipped that there was consensus “except in Alaska." It was obviously a reference to previous statements Palin has made questioning whether human activity plays a role in global warming.

The event was organized by CNN, George Washington University, Colin Powell Center for Policy Studies, the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, and the Center for New American Security.

After the Bush Administration reckessly ruined this man's career and left his reputation in tatters, it is a true testimony to his ideals that he does not hold any of them accountable
Powell says he "will look at who has the best economic policies, who inspires the most confidence in the country and around the world, and who will keep America safe."

Sounds like a ringing endorsement of the Obama/Biden ticket to me!!!
This is a defining moment for America. The world is looking. Is the content of a man's character enough to define him? Is America worthy of continued world's leadership? Our decision...come November. The clock is ticking and I hope we don't skip a golden opportunity. I hope the General gets off the sidelines and muscle his citizens to make the decision of a century. Obama/Biden 08

TIME FOR POWELL< BLOOMBERG AND HAGEL TO ENDORSE OBAMA

ENOUGH!!!!!!!
Unless John McCain has held executive office I am not clear where his "experience" comes from.  His judgement is flawed and made even more evident by his choice of a running mate.  However, the media gives him a pass.  Because prior to the selections from either presidential candidate it was stated that this is selection will tell alot about them?  Now because McCain has so obviously chose the gimmicky choice, it is not an area that is being discussed.  Let's recognize that the economy has gone to hell but we somehow push the Republican narrative.
I will continue to write until you post my comments.  7 and counting.
Colin Powell, what is the advantage to having another Republican Administration for another 4 years? Most of us in this country can see DC needs to be cleaned out. I bet you understand that. So why can't you say so? This is not an election where one should remain "loyal" just for the sake of remaining loyal.

Aren't you even aware how Senator John McCain voted on veterans' issues, and he himself is a veteran? He sold out our military.

We as a nation are in deep deep trouble. Please speak up.
Man isnt about to put his name out on anything after how he was treated.
Typical Powell - unwilling to step out front and make a decision.  From refusing to resign as Secretary of State to protest this ridiculous war to not protesting more privately and publicly to torture, etc.  Get off the dime and endorse Obama!
The sad fact is if he declares his support for Obama the right will say he is only doing so because he is an African American. If he declares his support for McCain it will appear as if it's out of party loyalty. He can't win either way so I believe if he doesn't declare he will be silently supporting Obama.
Sen Obama has the intelligence, judgement, to lead the USA back into leadership in the world.  Sen McCain is old school who thinks u can shoot your way out

Great names whether you are Republican or Democrat.

Living American history.

Powell,Madeleine Albright, James Baker, Warren Christopher, and Henry Kissinger.

All history... it is a new day in America... a day when America slipped into 2nd class status in the last way she led the world...the Amazing American Money Machine is broke and get broker(s).

New names emerge from the hellish smoke and mirrors of the Bush years...

Change you can take to the bank.  Or Lehman Brothers (or WaMu, or AIG, or...)

The fact that Secretary Powell has not yet endorsed the Republican / establishment candidate is significant.  His endorsement could be the ultimate game changer in this campaign.

Courage, Secretary Powell.  Do the right thing - endorse Obama!

Its amazing how people of different race, gender, age, and political affiliation can have intellegent discussions without lying.

I guess education does play a role when people focus on their common grounds verses things that divide them.
Well, General, since the U.N. your word isn't the gold standard it used to be, but if you want to start to repair the damage to the country you helped perpetrate, BushCo didn't entirely ruin your reputation and you know which one of these guys is loose cannon of the first order.
I find it quite telling and refreshing that a Republican leader, greatly respected by both parties, isn't automatically endorsing his party's candidate. Here is a person who wants to make a smart choice.
You know what General Powell? It was your waffling and desire to be one of the boys that helped lead us into that dreadful Iraq quagmire. How did he ever get 4 stars being so indecisive?
It's hard to imagine that Colin Powell could possibly want to continue the policies of the past 8 years. He's a smarter man than that.

All I can say, sir, if you read this, is consider what has happened to America since 2000.

* Consider that Iran is now stronger than it was before the lies and failed policies of George W. Bush.
* Consider that the billions borrowed to pay for this war and this surge continues to trash this economy.
* Consider that it is the failed "trickle down" policies of deregulation of banking and mortgage industries led by none other than the top economic adviser of McCain - Phil "nation of whiners" Gramm that has brought us to where we are today.
* Consider that real change couldn't possibly make it worse than it is right now.

And sir, consider how easily John McCain has traded his honor for the lies, smears and half-truths of the likes of Tucker Eskew -- the man who brought "mcCain has a black baby" into the Republican primary in S.C. in 2000... yet John McCain holds his nose AND HIRES THAT DISHONORABLE SWIFTBOATER to run his campaign in 2008.

The John McCain of 2000 would not recognize the John McCain of 2008. Do you?
Good and keep him undecided.  He lied through his teeth to this country and the world.  If he is supporting Barack, he needs to keep it to himself.

Powell's support I don't want.  Let him stay where he has been, in seclusion.
WELL, IF POWELL IS GOING TO VOTE ON THE SUBSTANCE, I GUESS HE'S GOING TO VOTE FOR OBAMA BECAUSE MCCAIN HAS NONE.
I think it undoubtedly lingers in General Powell's mind that the Bush Administration made him look like a stooge and a lackey when they sent him before the United Nations with incomplete intelligence and absolute lies before we invaded Iraq.

I believe that somewhere, deep down, he resents what he was forced to do and he may be nowhere near a lock for the GOP.

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.
The fact that Colin Powell, a Republican, has not decided (in favor of the Republican), is in itself significant.

McSame is too unstable to lead on Day One.  And Palin is too dnagerous to Lead on Day Two.
"... he told Obama he would not vote for him just because he is black."  Is Powell implying the senator has ever expected an endorsement from anyone based on color?
Given Senator Obama's even-tempered nature I'm sure he reacted with appropriate restraint at this insult from someone who claims to him "extremely well."
I'm disappointed in Powell = only a moron could be undecided at this point. McCains policies are exactly like Bush's and Bush screwed both the American middle class and poor as well as Powell himself!  Come on Mr Powell - get on the Obama wagon before its too late for America.
Who cares what Colin Powell thinks? He has proved to be unworthy of any leadership role. Just be a "good soldier" and salute the imbecile driving you and your army over the cliff. Or worse yet, be fooled by him.
Colin Powell - you should be ashamed to show your face in public.
Colin must vote for Barack. Every other black is.
I'll be looking forward to watching the forum (even though MSNBC is untouchable :)

I'll wager Powell goes for Obama if McCain continues these Rovarian politics.  It seems to repel him.

Once bitten...
Powell WANTS to stay loyal to the GOP, but he just can't in good conscience bring himself to do it.  So the best course of action (for now) is to stay neutral.
I hope he not only supports Obama, but I hope he finds a home somewhere in Obama's cabinet or White House staff, or perhaps even an ambassadorship.
Madeline Albirght.  Seriously?

I have a cat with more foreign policy sense than she has.

He gets that the mouse has to die.  He doesn't negotiate with it; he doesn't think he needs more evidence to indict it with; he kills it.

We have enemies.  They invade us, they die.  End of story.  This fat lady already sang.  Thank God, we survived her.
What can I say, Collin Powell is all class.  From being a young officer in Vietnam to the Joint Chief's of Staff, and finally Secretary of State. He is a gentleman and a patriot.
HI MY NAME IS BETTY MCGRAW I AM A SENIOR AND A DEMOCRAT

Gen'l Powell - thank you for your honesty.  The left-wing press had me
believing that you were going to vote for Obama on a racist basis.  Maybe there is hope for us yet if everyone will look at the issues, then
vote.
Well then Mr Powell, I would have to question your judgement!  You did perpetuate President Bush's lies about Iraq and you didn't stand up to his adminstration...
If Colin Powell would run for President I would vote for him tomorrow!!  It is interesting to hear he is still on the fence.
