When 'fundamentals' matter

Posted: Monday, September 15, 2008 7:42 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Ben Weltman and Domenico Montanaro
On any other day, this might not have mattered.

With Lehman Brothers filing for bankruptcy, both presidential candidates had the opportunity to make their case on the state of the American economy.

The Democratic ticket, though, was quick to seize on part of McCain’s speech this morning when he said, “Our economy, I think, still, the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but these are very, very difficult times."

“Fundamentals of our economy are strong” was the key phrase. But it wasn’t new. And neither was the Obama response. (McCain later tried to clarify and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he agreed with the characterization.)

First Read searched through our database of the candidates' speeches and found McCain had used the phrase at least 16 other times, between Jan. 1st and June 5th of this year.

It was a regular portion of his stump speech during the Republican primary, but there was about a three-month gap after June 5th -- effectively when the general election began -- when McCain did not use the now-maligned turn of phrase.

Then on Aug. 20th, McCain appeared on conservative Laura Ingraham’s radio show and made the claim yet again. The Obama campaign has since tried -- futilely -- to make it stick.

But on this rare day when the economy was in full focus, it seemed to break through.

But this is when it shouldn't have mattered. The full quote from the prepared remarks was:

"Our workers are the most innovative, the hardest working, the best skilled, most productive, most competitive in the world.  My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong."
-----------------------------------------------------
Looks like McCain's supporters are just as out of touch with reality as he is!!
Actually that isnt the full quote.  That is the correction.  They had to send McCain out there again to say that quote, so the first one wouldnt look so bad.  The first time he made the quote he never mentioned any of that other stuff.  All he said was "the fundamentals of our economy are strong, but this is still a tough time."  So please get your facts right if you are gonna post something.  Thank you!!
Fool US once, shame on you (GOP/Bush 2000)
Fool US twice, shame on me (GOP/Bush 2004)
But, fool US three times? (GOP/McCain)
What could you possibly say to yourself, if you fall for the same Republican BS a 3rd time?
"Our workers are the most innovative, the hardest working, the best skilled, most productive, most competitive in the world.  My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong."

Yes we have great workers, but our economy is still in the toilet thanks to George Bush and his policies.  Policies that McCain will continue.
By his own account Senator Mc Cain “doesn’t understand economics.” He depended on former Senator Phil Gramm, the author of the bill that unleashed the market forces that crashed today. Gramm was McCain campaign co-chair, lobbyist for UBS bank and Tutor-in-chief telling McCain to “let markets do what markets do best”. We now see what that is: crash and burn, without prudent regulation.

McCain can’t be trusted to suddenly abandon his life long commitment to free markets, with slight regulation, to clean up Wall Street.

If you believe that he will lift a finger to implement financial reform, then I have a bridge to nowhere to sell you.

Ok to those Republican fools in here who are asking the dumb question " show us where the economy is NOT sound."

1) Before this fiasco, there were only 5 investment banks in the entire nation. Now there are only 2!!!

2) Some of you state "no problem" the other banks will pick up all the new business and fill in the gap.
NO!!! There is no new business to pick up so entire markets and business sectors may disappear over the next few months!!! Thats why this is such big news.
THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICA. NOT EVEN DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION!!!

3) Why should you worry? Wall street fat cats are now feeling what everyday Americans have been feeling for the last few years. Well you should worry because if you work for a medium sized or large corporation, you may not get paid next month!!!

Most of these investment banks financed payroll for corporations. Thats right, if you work for a large private or publically held corporation, your paycheck is really a loan that your comany borrows every 30- 90 days to free up capital for other investments. If you are a retiree living on dividends or interest payments, you will see a decline in income, Maybe as much as 30-50 %.

Now all of you who have a brain the size of a gnat on crack and are thinking of voting for the Republicans, here this>

This happened because the Republicans since ROnald Reagan have diminished or removed all business regulation that protected main street from wall street.

I will end here. Before you post stupid comments read a few books on Finance and Accounting, Economics, Government Policy and How it affects Business Cycles!!

Phil Graham is McCain's economic advisor. HE WAS ONE OF THE MAIN SENATORS WHO WROTE LEGISLATION TO DERGULATE BANKING AND ENERGY!!!!!

Let me make it plain to those who are still thinking the Republicans are a safe bet.

What the Republicans have done is effectively remove the cops from the streets. Imagine what would happen if that happened literally. crime rates would soar to unheard of levels. THis is whats going on with the economy. 100.00 a barrel oil. Bank failures, job losses etc. The republicans not only removed the cops from the streets, but they have been profiting from the crime lords that they allowed to defraud the American people.

"Well My Goodness, all you Whiners.....the Overall economy is Sound" -- according to John McCain!

Didn't you get the memo? John McCain said everything was fine....fine....just fine.

:( What an out of touch bonehead.

The worst is yet to come. If you believe that we need real change this election, you really can't afford to take a chance on Palin/McCain and four more years of this disasterous economy.

Hi Keith,
Just wanted to let you know that I am still watching and you are getting better.

Am still disappointed there still not an E-mail address for you and Chris.  Rachel has an E-mail address but she does not have a blog board.
There are many issues confronting this country, but in this E-mail, I am concerned about what is taking place with the Character and Judgment Another way of Saying It, in what politicians do to get the people's vote.

How many people can agree that we have had enough false information continuously put out by our Government and by this administration.  As long as they can get by with giving out false information without being challenged or encouraged to stop instead of rewarded, then they will continue to do so.

It's been hard to come up with an answer to counteract our politicians or anybody else who continues to falsify the all or part of the information they say or put out for the purpose of influencing the voters or the people's opinion to get their "vote."

If the below statement has already been said before by someone else then it needs to be said again and again until the truth prevails.

Character and Judgment, Another way of Saying It.

"What can we say about any person's character and judgment or their opinion of the people to whom they deliberately continue giving out false information?  Then also there is something to be said about the people's character and judgment who knowingly continue accepting false information just for the purpose of winning whatever it is they are trying to win."

Surely, the people don't want to continuously make their "life decisions" based on false information put out to them by our elected leaders?

What we've learned in the last 8 years.  The GOP will bail you out if you're the CEO that drove your company into the ground (making sure you get that multi million dollar severance package), but can't be trusted to do anything for the poor when natural disasters (that they had no control over) destroy their homes and lives.  Come on - why do we give companies more power than citizens?  Companies are not supposed to have a vote here.  They rarely pay taxes.  Let's first get rid of the GOP, then we can focus on getting lobbyist money out of Washington.  If the lobbyists have a convincing argument they should be asking the public to support them - not bribing elected officials.
But this is when it shouldn't have mattered. The full quote from the prepared remarks was:

"Our workers are the most innovative, the hardest working, the best skilled, most productive, most competitive in the world.  My opponents may disagree, but those fundamentals of America are strong."

hey WT stop believeing the spin and the rewrites of the McBush campaign. He said NOTHING of the sort the first time around. The second was from a CYA speech. Pay better attention to the ture facts please!
wt, San Francisco, CA (Sent Monday, September 15, 2008 8:26 PM)

No "wt"; those are the comments attempting to "clarify" that he now does not mean what he said earlier today! We know what he said, and he has said it before. We also know he says that words 'meanings' change whenever anyone calls him on his BS!!

NICE TRY THOUGH!!
McCain thinks we are whiners and the sucky economy is in our heads. What does he know, he lost count on how many homes he owns? I know first hand how bad the economy is. I am losing my job because they are closing my office and shipping the jobs elsewhere. It's in my head though.
No way, No how, No Mccain/Palin!!!!!! They will ruin our economy even more than is now.  They don't care about the poor and the working class in America.  If you do not have healthcare and have a six month emergency fund in your bank account, then your choice is clear.  Obama/Biden 08!!!
