Palin: When you've lost David Brooks…

Posted: Tuesday, September 16, 2008 9:23 AM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

Has David Brooks come out against the idea of a VP Palin? It seems so. "Sarah Palin has many virtues. If you wanted someone to destroy a corrupt establishment, she’d be your woman. But the constructive act of governance is another matter. She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness.”

“The idea that ‘the people’ will take on and destroy ‘the establishment’ is a utopian fantasy that corrupted the left before it corrupted the right. Surely the response to the current crisis of authority is not to throw away standards of experience and prudence, but to select leaders who have those qualities but not the smug condescension that has so marked the reaction to the Palin nomination in the first place."

The Washington Post reports that Palin “is unlikely to meet with a special prosecutor looking into whether she or other state officials improperly pushed to punish a trooper, a spokesman for John McCain's presidential campaign announced Monday. Since Palin was named as McCain's running mate Aug. 29, the campaign has dismissed the state legislature's investigation into her dismissal of the state's director of public safety, saying that Democrats are exploiting the probe for political gain.”

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spoke with Monegan. Some excerpts:
MADDOW: Governor Palin told Charlie Gibson--you just heard the clip there--that she nor her husband pressured you to hire or fire anybody. Is that the truth?
MONEGAN: No, not entirely. The part about did she or any of her staff say fire him, quote unquote, that never occurred. No one ever said "fire him." What they said is things like "this man should not be a trooper, this man shouldn't represent the troopers," those kind of things which are inferring to fire him.
MADDOW: Would you describe it as being pressured to move him out of the office and how overt was that pressure if you did feel that pressure?
MONEGAN: Well, the very first time I even heard trooper Wooten's name was by-uh- through her husband Todd who wanted to tell me what kind of character was working for me and how he had filed a complaint and had documents and pictures and primarily he wanted to describe the character of Trooper Wooten. And that was in January of '07. It continued, right up until the last, I think it was in February of this year. So, it was continual. It was a reoccurring theme. If it wasn't--initially, it was the governor and her husband, but then it became other commissioners and not only did they call me, but they called other members of my staff.

“Palin may eventually have said ‘no thanks’ to a federally funded Bridge to Nowhere. But a bridge to her hometown of Wasilla, that's a different story,” the AP reports. “A $600 million bridge and highway project to link Alaska's largest city to Palin's town of 7,000 residents is moving full speed ahead, despite concerns the bridge could worsen some commuting and threaten a population of beluga whales.”

"What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? A tanning bed!" a Los Angeles Times blog writes. According to a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Transportation, Palin put in a tanning bed in the governor's mansion. It was first reported by an Alaska blog and picked up by Ben Smith at Politico and others.

The Wall Street Journal takes a look at an example where Palin didn't look like a small government conservative. "[W]hen Alaska government officials wanted to shut down a money-losing creamery, the governor overturned the decision after dairy farmers near her hometown complained the loss of subsidies would cripple them. On June 8, 2007, a board overseeing the 71-year-old state-run Matanuska Maid creamery announced the business would close after amassing $1.5 million in red ink since 2005, the result of a run-up in milk prices and other essentials. ‘I feel we are safeguarding the public interest in the decision that has been made,’ Mac Carter, chairman of the Alaska Creamery Board, said in a letter to the Palin administration."

More: "On June 16, 2007, Gov. Palin attended a rally by dairy farmers near her hometown of Wasilla who pleaded that the creamery stay open to help them and other members of the local dairy industry. ‘Things are kind of a mess right now with what's happening with Mat-Maid, and we're going to clean it up,’ the governor said at the event. She then sacked the creamery board and replaced it. The new board, headed by one of her childhood friends, ordered the creamery kept open. Six months later -- after the business racked up more than $800,000 in additional losses, according to state officials -- the new board ordered it closed again.”

“The candidate's handling of the matter has been fodder for some critics challenging her credentials as a self-proclaimed fiscal conservative. She has also been criticized for securing federal earmarks as mayor of Wasilla and, as governor, for raising taxes on oil-industry profits. ‘I think what happened here was her personal desire to satisfy a local constituency, versus what is right for the state,’ says Lyda Green, president of the Republican-run state senate and a political rival from Wasilla."

"Sarah The Unready"

http://rossdouthat.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/sarah_the_unready.php

Richard Cohen from the Washington Post:

"His opportunistic and irresponsible choice of Sarah Palin as his political heir -- the person in whose hands he would leave the country -- is a form of personal treason, a betrayal of all he once stood for. Palin, no matter what her other attributes, is shockingly unprepared to become president. McCain knows that. He means to win, which is all right; he means to win at all costs, which is not."
So we have yet another Washington Insider (Brooks) questioning yet another Washington Outside (Palin). Don't these Insiders get it? This is what Change looks like. Palin would bring a unique view, and a lot of skills to the VP position. Liberals like Brooks love the idea of Change, love it until that Change is probably going to happen that is. Then they fall back on their old Inside Washington ways.

Palin will be a fine VP.
Who is David Brooks?  And why would his opinion matter?
Biden, VP candidate was all over the morning shows.
Where is Ms. Palin?...VP canidate.
Yeah, a real maverick. More Kronies'R US.
McCain & MsPAIN are bold faced liars...

Dear Mornin’ Joe

You may never read this, but I felt compelled to write after viewing part of you show this morning.
You put up a poll that 32% of a portion of Ohio felt Palin was like them.  You added your normal rant about the Dems being elitist, (TRYING TO HANG ON TO THAT WORD) and that Palin was like America; which is why criticizing her will make the reps win.

Sir, criticizing Obama is why he had a record donation amount in August.  After the shameful spectacle at the Reps convention where lies and divisive hate was spewed from almost every speaker, you will see another good month for Obama.

32% of those polled in Ohio may think Palin is like them, and those 32% KNOW they are NOT qualified to run the country, so you can look at that two ways Joe.

Also, Palin is not untouchable, like you wish she could be.  She deserves all the wonderful scrutiny that the others, especially Obama, have received.

This life long Republican will be voting for the Dem ticket this year.
McCain is not qualified to be president, let alone Palin!
What is wrong with America?  Do people not pay attention AT ALL?   This woman is playing the same game with justice as we've seen the past 8 years.   Once you're in power (or now even nominated by the GOP), the old rules no longer apply.   Since when did we hand over our Democracy to a few kingmakers named Rove and Schmidt?
If Palin starts out not avoiding an investigation (because suddenly she decided that it's been taken over by Democrats) what'll she do with a Democratic Congress?
It's not complicated.... SHE IS A LIAR!!!!!

Anything else is just window dressing. Or if you prefer the anaolgy, "lipstick on a pig".
Wow, way to stand up for taxpayers.

New McPain campaign slogan:

Leadership we can be bankrupted by!
And the implosion begins...
For anyone who didn't follow the David Brooks link above, I highly recommend it.

It is well-written, thoughtful and fascinating to hear the take of a staunch conservative on Palin's credentials.
I've been saying it for the last 18 days. This pick is going to blow up in Sen. McCain's face.
Troopergate just will not go away. Is anyone surprised that she said a couple of weeks ago that she welcomed an investigation because she had nothing to hide, now she has flip flopped and says she will not cooperate with the investigation. Me thinks this looks like she has something to hide, or why else would she flip flop. I am shocked I tell you, SHOCKED!
"But it's not helpful to Palin that Monegan is talking to reporters."
So Racheal Madow is a reporter?????
Isn’t that what got you guys at MSNBC in trouble with the guys in the real news rooms, saying your talking heads are reporters?
She has not been engaged in national issues, does not have a repertoire of historic patterns and, like President Bush, she seems to compensate for her lack of experience with brashness and excessive decisiveness.
******************************************************

And therein lies the best argument against the McCain/Palin ticket.  Or is it Palin/McCain?

http://thepajamapundit.com/
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
The rats are beginning to climb off S.S. McCain! Stop by and read about Palin's latest stunner in Troopergate.
So now that the Barracuda has friends in high places, the investigation comes to a grinding halt. What a maverick!  What a reformer! And saving a decrepit creamery that is as old as Mccain (!) because a lobby of dairymen swayed her is hardly cutting-edge either. And as for experience, Brooks is spot-on.
Simply put - This woman just scares the hell out of me!
Dear David Brooks:  what, exactly, has Barack Obama accomplished?  Besides getting elected, I mean?  When he DOES win an election, he's looking ahead to the NEXT higher office.  I suppose that, heaven forfend, he win this election, he'll run for Grand Poobah of the world.

Please, David, stop trying so hard to win libby friends.  You only make a fool wof yourself.  I realize that they are the'cool kids', but, seriously, what do you have in common with them?
Sssssssssss.......hear that?  That's the sound of the air going out of the 'Palin Bubble'.

Whoohoo! Finally the press is doing their job!
If this is what we get in the White House with the McCain/Palin ticket, excuse me the Palin/McCain ticket than no thanks. She already believes that she is immune to prosecution just like Karl Rove and the American people will give her immunity. Another line, sink and "hooker" for the old man vote.

The Republicans are right "we are as dumb as dirt"
placing your own interests above the good of the community: proven reform credentials.

we just won't talk about whether it is good or bad reform, but it certainly is change from what is now going on in washington... wait a minute...

The entire McCain campaign has become a joke.  unfortunately the only ones laughing is the world community.

mark my words, if McCain is elected POTUS, the world will turn its back on the US, and there will be no bail outs for our economy, no assistance to our military, and no sympathy for our people who struggle.  This election is a world referendum on the citizens of this nation, and electing another cowboy, warmongering, idealistic crusader will force the other nations in the world to come to a consensus that the US is no longer a beacon of freedom, but a collection of christian fundamentalists who have no regard for the state of other nations, only their own self interests.  this can not be allowed, we must vote for a president that understands compromise and is able to work with leaders of other nations instead of arrogantly maintaining our "rightness" in all matters.

http://horneddevil.proboards98.com/index.cgi?board=iduspolitics
The media looked into John McCain's soul and saw a "good man".

Now John McCain is DARING the media to say anything while he attempts to lie and cheat his way to the White House.

Sarah Palin and John McCain are two of the most prolific liars in American History.

What's that sound I hear?

The silence of the media. The silence of the Republican Party.  The silence of the Democratic party. The silence of our financial "leaders". The silence of our military "leaders".

Sitting back once again and letting it all happen on their watch.

Just like Iraq.

Just like Enron.

Just like the Housing Crisis.

Just like the S & L scandal.

Just like the current Stock Market Crash.

And Americans just keep voting for them so they can feel "safe".

Soon there won't be anything left to protect.
Troopergate goes to the heart of the question, is Palin a corruption fighter or part of the "good ole boy" system that puts loyalty above experience and capablity.  It really appears that Palin is more the later than the former.  Fire anyone who doesn't agree with you and reward those who will always tell you what you want to hear.
It's not Brooks that needs to see the light but all the Palin supporters.

Are they that blind by her "personality" to grossly overlook her lack of awareness, experience, & how to handle questions with tact and intelligence?

If so then the security, safety and well-being of this country are in extreme danger if McCain wins and something happens to him.

Chuck Todd:  I follow you each day on msnbc new shows,
and feel you really have a handle on the race.

I personally feel that you are unbiased in all you
have said.  But cannot say the same for Morning Joe,
get rid of Pat Buchanan !!!!  Enough of his comments!
No one knows who this guy is, so its not going to help Obama.  Obama is going to lose, because NY is slipping through his arrogant fingers....should've picked Hillary as your VP, in fact, Hillary should be the nominee!
I believe Sarah Palin is so not ready to lead from day 1 after watching Rachel's show last night. The press is so in the tank for McSame. Joe, Mika,Andrea,Chuck, and David need to vet that nut job John McSame picked as a running mate.  The media is the problem they never objected to the war and believed the Bush talking points. Here we go again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tanning bed she bought with her own money should not be an issue.  The rest, however........
The Alaskan Bear
Either fact or fiction could the bear express,
for being there we could only guess.
Everyone looked and buzzed with amaze,
for bear was there with  us in a daze.
There was no fear in the bear we saw,
we heard, we stared with all our awe.
The bear took a moose and then some fish,
to our surprise we were all in a bliss.
Chefs and jets were made to take a hike,
and lipstick and bulldogs were our delight..
Pipelines and gas were the purpose of life,
the bear needed to tell us all of that strife.
The bear smiled has to eat our delight,
we jumped and sang to take that flight.
After St. Paul we could hear the bear growl,
the same old stuff to all our howls.
Trouble and talking of this past awful trooper,
may turn out to be a bears really big pooper..
Money and travel to home to per diem
can't tell if the bear should have ever receive'm
Venture not far and be on this leash  ,
for the bear is not quite ready to take that release.
Keep giving those songs of praise and  token,
your handler will keep you always well  spoken .
As the days go by for bear walks alone..
we  start to see that the bear is only a clone
We must look to see if the bear will follow..
for someday we vote for the bear in the hollow..
The McCain campaign has cynically foisted Sarah Palin on America in the hopes that the clock would run out before we'd get a good sense of her record and positions. She's clearly a gifted and ambition politician, but she's presented to us as a package that masks a lot of what's really there.

I have been interested in politics all of my life, but I've found myself finally pulling back over the past few years. The 8 years of Bush have just done so much damage. Obama has given me, yes, I'll admit it: hope again. I don't know how successful he will be in the White House, but what he's already done is reawakened a civic spirit in me and so many other Americans.

Obama asks us to believe in the better part of all of us. McCain appeals to our worst instincts.

http://torqopia.blogspot.com/
When it look like it's going against you - claim partisan politics - ala Karl Rove!
Isn't it interesting that "Ms. Transparency in Government" suddendly looks like every other rotten lying politician!
Nothing like releasing "selected e-mails" to buttress your case.
Where is my garbage can - I think I need to puke!
These are damning facts for Palin, but do white, working class voters supporting Palin actually read The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal or the L.A. Times? My co-workers don't, and they think Palin is just peachy.
David Brooks? You mean that liberal, elitist, lying skunk of a writer? The Wall Street Journal? You mean that snarky hot bed of liberalistic journalism? Haha. Poor, poor Sarah, even losing her side now. Tick tock, tick tock. Can't wait for the debates!
It is clear to me that a lot of progressives and liberals champion Obama as  an agent of change but they can't get over the issue of race. That coupled with the conservatives who vote party line no matter who is on the ticket presents a real challenge for Obama/Biden.  FoxNews has been running a poll all morning that shows McCain winning the electoral college by more than 20 points! How can that be possible with what is at stake. It's as if the electorate is on some kind of opiate and are not seeing things in real time.  Do people really believe that a John McCain presidency will CHANGE things.  His party has been in charge every year (except the 12 of Carter and Clinton administrations) during his almost 30 years in Washington. How hard did he fight for the little people during those 30 years? We know he agrees with the Bush tax cut for the rich.

The running commentary about what a great pick Sarah Palin was for McCain is stale. Her record of accomplishments in Alaska is being supplanted by the drip, drip of mini-scandals and her campaign stump speech which is becoming somewhat of an embarrassment for it's shallowness. Soemone needs to inform her that she cannot fire everyone in DC who does not agree with her, so that style of governance won't work as well on the federal level as it does in Alaska. This is a nightmare of epic proportions if McCain wins in November!
No idea what she is doing fiscally.  Puts high school buddies with even less of a clue in upper management positions.  Caribou Barbie rides again.  Coming to a white house near you!

No idea what she is doing fiscally.  Puts high school buddies with even less of a clue in upper management positions.  Caribou Barbie rides again.  Coming to a white house near you!

She really is a maverick.  According to old western lore, there was a rancher who refused to brand his horses.  Not because he was worried about hurting the horses but because he was a horse thief and not branding his horses allowed him to steal other peoples horses that had not been branded yet.
I'm tired of hearing we need another Washington insider to solve our problems.  I want someone to come in with a fresh look and shake things up and I believe Sarah Palin is just what we need along with John McCains ability to do what's right for this country.
More left-wing media fodder. We don't care. We care about real issues not tanning beds and lipstick. Don't you folks understand? Quit sending reporters to Alaska and instead send them to Kansas, Indiana and Iowa, where REAL people live.
Who's David Brooks??
I don't know what is more trouble, that McCain new all of the numerous unsettling problems that Palin had or that he didn't bother to find out because he was so personally excited about her as a way to rejuvenate his tired old campaign.
As usual, MSNBC shows its bias by doing everything it can to destroy a great American with actual experience, unlike their inexperienced God-puppet Obama.
Great reporting of what of what is found on blogs.  That tanning bed stuff is cutting edge.  And it has been said that there are no more Edward R. Murrows . . .
This woman is a good (not great) politician. Beautiful to look at and good speaker. No financial education and experience. The above proves this. The people crowing in the arenas will eventually hear the right message. She does not have the ability to lead the great country of America. She says she is going to reform the government - how exactly? No one from the media or the audience is able to ask this question of anyone from the campaign? Why is the media on behalf of the people to pushing this issue harder? If this were Barack he would not be allowed to get away with this hiding. Just because the campaign cries sexism - everyone is running scared. Is there anyone - oh yes, the ladies from The View showed the 'journalist' how it should be done!!

Wake up media - do your job!!
You guys just don't get it... you don't have a
clue. Read the BBC visit to a Chicago suburb.
We don't want any more of the "experts" in
charge... look what all those Harvard grads
did to Wall Street. We want one of us to go
up there and tell it like it is.
What more crap do people need to come out about this lady before it sinks in that she is bush in a dress!her action aren't actions of a "strong woman" as many try to claim. her actions are of corruption and personal agenda... u know the typical republican ways!
My goodness, tanning bed in the governor's house.
Making decisions, good or bad.  Trying to dicipline a trooper that shot a child with a Taser?  Being the butts of jokes by SNL?  What pressure!!!!  Being compaired to the guy running for president?  Whew, wonder what the news is going to do if their guy doesn't win?

another MSNBC hack presenting a slanted truth --- biased biased biased
