Biden takes Amtrak to Delaware

MEDIA, Pa. -- It was almost like old times.

After a morning in Washington, Joe Biden headed to Union Station to take Amtrak back to Wilmington, as he has for most of his 36 years in the United States Senate. All that was different today was the accompanying Secret Service and media contingent with him.

The trip on the rails was officially just a matter of routine and convenience. "Shorter than driving or flying," explained spokesman David Wade.

“We’re going back to Wilmington so I can see my wife, pack and go on a three-day bus trip," Biden said, mentioning his upcoming Ohio bus tour.

The photo op also underscored one of the most common storylines for the Delaware senator -- that despite his long tenure in the Senate, he's never been part of Washington.

Despite the additional security that comes with being vice presidential nominee, Biden rode a regularly scheduled Acela train. He took a seat in the first passenger car -- appropriately not the quiet car -- which was closed off to other passengers. But eventually, he did travel through some of the other cars.

"You’re on television now, I’m sorry, can’t control this," he told one passenger, explaining the ever-present camera crew accompanying him on board. “If we get elected, it will be the most train-friendly administration ever,” he told another.

Biden also happened upon a woman from the Brennan Center for Justice, who testified this morning before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Biden said he would have been there if he weren't "doing this," according to a pool report of the trip. Biden mostly just had quick greetings with passengers on board, but he did discuss some legal issues with her and another woman with her, an NYU law student.

"When I go abroad, every world leader I sit with, the first thing they talk about, after about five minutes is about the rule of law,” Biden said. “About Guantanamo, about what’s happening to us, about what’s going on. We literally, we used to be that [city] on a hill. ... It has, we have used the phrase 'we have created rather than dissuaded more terrorists than by our actions.'"

Biden also visited the cafe car to get a non-alcoholic cranberry cocktail. “I’m the only guy you know who doesn’t drink,” Biden told a reporter on board. “Never had a drink in my life, too many alcoholics in my family.”

After the 75-minute trip to Wilmington, Biden exited the train and ran into some familiar faces at the Wilmington station.

"You’re like family,” Biden was heard saying to a worker there.

After some time at home in Wilmington, Biden was to make his way to an event here in Media -- by car.

So Biden is "just like us" but beter prepared to be Vice President or President!

Guess that should have been the priority of the Republican Party's Vice Presidential pick!
I thought Biden was quiting so Hillary, who he believes has more talent then him, could take the VP spot.
Now that's a real American leader!  Obama/Biden 08'
Palin takes a snowmachine to and from work.
Man, I almost feel bad he has to lug the reporters and secret service around.

Oh, repub spin on biden being a attention hog in

Biden rocks.  Plain and simple.  I can see him as President.  Palin as president would ensure my moving to Canada, for her running the country would ensure the destruction of all that Jefferson stood for.
Does Biden go over the bridge to nowhere? I guess he does, if it takes him to Delaware.
Meanwhile is Wasilla, Sarah and her cronies are running from the subpoena servers.
[[Biden also happened upon a woman from the Brennan Center for Justice, who testified this morning before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Biden said he would have been there if he weren't "doing this," ]]

Maybe Joe can find a little time to call Lehman Brothers and AIG execs in front of his committee, you know, to ask them what happened. Trouble is, they'll point at Joe and say 'You passed laws that let us do this." and "We're some of your biggest contributors". It wouldn't be a good TV moment for Joe.
Democrat or Republican have to like and respect this man!
Joe is he wild card...just nobody know it yet. He is the
most likeable guy in the campaign and I think everyone
knows a guy like him. I think after he destroys Palin
in the debate(politely), the country will see how
how experienced yet down to earth this guy is
Get em Joe!

Guess Biden is taking a train to nowhere as you certianly wouldn't know he was running for VP.  Why isn't he out making speaches telling us what he is about. This guy is offically a 'No Show'  Probably too busy with his son's lobbist buddies.
Man of the people?

$42 - $59 each way?

I guess that's why he isn't "charitable"!
I just love this guy!  He's the real "straight-talker!"  He'll be one of the best VP's our nation has ever seen!
"Can you find a person more unsuited to run the nation"

One question..why does first read always embed McCain's ad and links Obama's. Embed them and post Obama stuff singly too~
I like and respect Joe Biden, but I disagree with him about Gitmo.  In WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam we kept prisoners in prisoner of war camps until the war was over.  We did not release them to resume fighting, and we didn't put them on trial in civilian courts.  These are people who have committed acts of war against our military,  they are not US citizens, and they were not captured in this country.  Of the terrorist that have been released an unacceptably high number have returned to terrorism.  The people that want to have the terrorists treated with the same respect as uniformed soldiers and afforded the protection of the Geneva Convention reverse themselves when they demand that the terrorist be treated as criminals and tried in civilian courts.  You can't have it both ways.

He also said that  Gitmo causes more terroisim than it prevents. That might be the case If terrorisim were only occouring in Afganistan, and Iraq and only against Americans.  Instead terrorisim is taking place all over the world in places that we have no involvment, killing people off all backgrounds and nationalities.
I absolutely LOVE that Biden is a train fan!!!  And I look forward to putting more into trains in this country in an Obama/Biden administration.  It's a great way to travel and we've got to come up with more alternatives to air and road travel.  The state of our rail system across the country is variable at best.  On some routes, it's not bad, on others, it's nearly criminal what horrible shape the tracks are in.  I would love to see more investment in rail -- federal, state, and private -- to keep costs down, improve routes, and put more trains in service around the country.
Who cares, I'm voting Palin, She is the one that will fix this depression we are in. She is the only one with Executive Experience. She is true defintion of Reformer and Maverick and is down to earth. She has a true American Family. She is the one that will deliver us from the evils of this world. And last but not least She is a WOMAN, that can keep the Good Ole Boys in their place. Please people vote Palin/McCain for the sake of this country!!! We don't need another failure running the country. Barack has failed in the Senate and his campaign has failed to have him elected to the Presidency. ALL WOMEN PLEASE VOTE PALIN!!!
How do you not just love this guy?!  This is down to earth and the guy next door that is smart, understands the American way of life and the one you should vote for.  This is keeping in touch with the public everyday.  We the people need his and Barack's knowledge, experience and passion to help get us back on track and make our problems and fears matter.
Keep it real, Joe.

You rock.
Go Joe!!

Biden Rocks!!

Obama/Biden '08
Why do you keep giving her a platform to spew her generalities when the McCain campaign will not allow you to actually ask her questions on how the McCain/Palin ticket will have different economic policies then the last 8 years of Bush?

Come on MSNBC, time to earn your money and help the American voters understand what each candidate will do if they are elected.  Barack has clearly articulated his plan to move our economy forward and it is a drastic change from the policies of the last eight years (and will return us to the prosperity of the 1990's)

Less War / More Thinking
Biden seems like an O.K. kind of guy.  I really don't know much about him.  I personally have little respect for anyone, however, who makes a career out of politics.  If they would suckle on the taxpayer's teat for less than 10 years and then move on, I would have a higher opinion of them.

I appreciate how Biden took the time to acknowledge and communicate with other passengers.  These are the people he works for and it is gratifying to know that he at least will speak to those who have enabled him to keep his cushy job for so long.

My only criticism is that Biden apparently supports the comment that America has "'created rather than dissuaded more terrorists ... by our actions.'"  That concept is totally offensive to me.  I understand that there are those who blame the atrocities committed on 9/11 squarely upon the USA, but I believe those people who already hated America even before 9/11 happened.

If Biden really supports that statement, I will certainly not vote for him.
Why doesn't the media publicize his activities as much as they do Palin's?  Sadly, the media spent the past two weeks talking about Palin.  Every morning while getting ready for work, I turn on "Morning Joe," hear a few seconds of them gush about what a strong woman "Sarah" is, pretend to vomit, switch off the TV curse the obsequiousness of the "Morning Joe" anchors as they say again "Obama needs needs to stop focusing on Palin."  What!  That is all THEY (media) is doing.  When Obama talks about anything other than her they get bored.
Who cares????   Lots of people take the train everyday. Joe's not special.  And, just because he doesn't SLEEP in Washington often doesn't mean he's not part of it.  He's been there 36 years ENOUGH.
Joe Biden, now there's a real american who is just like me. Hard working, takes public transportation, etc. Unlike Sarah Palin, fake reformer who is just like every other politician, taking billions in earmarks and has a tanning bed in her own home!
I love this guy!!!!
He's very real, not some empty slate.
Never been part of Washington?!
WTFrak?
Per Amtrak, today's 7p ET Acela Express takes 1hr 12mins!!
www.amtrak.com
washington dc union station to wilmington, de

So "journalist", how about some reporting before you blindly state your candidate's talking point?

1 hr / 12 mins PUHLEEZE!!

Not part of DC? Puhleeeze!

Why don't you talk to some real Americans about their commutes and do some real journalism!

--gays4palin
(not part of dc, loool!!)
and I bet Biden doesn't even have to pay for his Acela Express (1hr / 12 min) first class ticket home!!

Puhleeze, not part of DC!

Memoli, did you laugh when you wrote this article?

LOOL!!
I live in West Hollywood, CA.

I work 10 miles from my home, but can take me sometimes an hour to get home because of the commute.

Gosh, I guess I'm not part of Los Angeles!

Just a hilarious story.
mike--- what a fantastic puff peice, i mean really! its all well and good if there are some done for sarah palin, i guess, but i seriously doubt that will happen. prove me wrong guys! prove your objectivity!
Most politicians do their best to avoid constitutents except at election time. Commuter rail trains are a great way to talk to people about their concerns and what's going on in their lives. I think it's time for Joe Biden to get out there with his story; it's far superior to Sarah Palin's brief Cinderella story. He really is a public servant.
I can't believe people can't see this guy for what he really is. DECENT. Maybe we're so jaded we can't recognize a good guy when we see him. I would be proud to have Barack Obama as my President and Joe Biden as VP. Hope Not Fear!  Eight years of fear and hoplessness is enough.
What a guy !!!  He's so much better than Palin, and his family story is inspiring !!!
"go bloody their noses Joey" !!!!
I'm supposed to vote for Biden because he takes the TRAIN?!?!

I'm supposed to vote for him because he promised me a new TOASTER?!?!

People in delaware MUST be idiots.
Hmmm. Lets see Biden has been in Congress about 35 years, never had a real job, lives in the pockets of crdit card companies, asks for hundreds of millions in pork and that is for one year. But yegads he takes the Amtrack home and stops in a cafe. Well Im convinced he is not of washinton. Bwaaa haaa haaaa.God stop it Joe . You are too much. Bwaahaahaaa
and who actually buys "average" Joe's first class roundtrip ticket each day?

Did you ask that question, Mr. Journalist?
