Obama ties McCain to old boys' network

Posted: Wednesday, September 17, 2008 4:43 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
ELKO, NV -- Obama used his third campaign trip to this city in northern Nevada to link McCain to the very “old boys’ network” the GOP presidential nominee says he has promised to fight.

Obama, who has consistently argued that McCain does not understand the magnitude of the economic troubles facing the country and hardworking families, told a crowd of more than 1,500 people gathered in a park here today that, unlike McCain, it didn’t take a crisis on Wall Street for him to realize people were suffering on Main Street.

“We can’t steer ourselves out of this crisis by taking the same disastrous road, and that’s what this election’s about,” he said, repeating his earlier criticisms of McCain’s response to the news of the problems at two of the country’s top investment banks.

Obama went on to argue, as he often does, that the Arizona senator would mean more of the same when it came to Washington politics and a trickle down economic philosophy.

“Yesterday, John McCain actually said that if he’s president he’ll take on, and I quote, 'the old boys’ network in Washington.' I’m not making this up. This is somebody been in Congress for 26 years, who put seven of the most powerful Washington lobbyists in charge of his campaign. And now he tells us that he’s the one who’s gonna take on the old boys' network,” he said. “In the McCain campaign that’s called a staff meeting!”

Obama addressed the latest news from Wall Street -- the federal bailout of the insurer American International Group -- insisting that the solution should not reward those who reaped benefits from the company’s investments when times were good.

“We don’t know all the details of the arrangement with AIG,” he said. “The Federal Reserve must ensure that plans protect the families that count on insurance and it should bolster our economy’s ability to create good paying jobs and help working Americans pay their bills and save money. It must not bail out the shareholders, or management of AIG that were making big profits when times were good. They shouldn’t be bailed out when times are bad.”

The attack in Yemen
While the focus of the race in recent days has been on the economy, the attack by militants in Yemen today that killed 16 people brought national security back to the forefront. Obama said he strongly condemned the attack.

“I honor the embassy guards who defended the compound and my thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and while I’m thankful that no Americans were killed, I am deeply saddened by the loss of innocent life,” he said. “It just reminds us that we have to redouble our efforts to root out and destroy international terrorists organizations and to make investments that keep us safe in our homeland and our embassies around the world and the attack reminds us that we’re grateful for all Americans -- military and civilian -- who are in dangerous places all around the world and are serving us so well so I hope that everyone keeps them in mind.”

After a foray to the safe state of California for two massive multimillion dollar fundraisers yesterday -- the campaign has not released an official figure for the amount raised but estimated it was something close to $9 million -- Obama today returned to a state he lost to Hillary Clinton during the primaries. He stressed the importance of campaigning in this GOP stronghold.

“There’s a reason we keep coming to Elko,” he said. “In the past, presidential candidates don’t come up here. Their attitude is ‘Well you know, if you’re a Democrat, you go down to Vegas.’ If you’re a Republican, I don’t know, I guess you just don’t show up. But see, this place is like places all across the country people who are working hard, who are giving back to the community, who are looking after their families and have been forgotten.”

Calling his supporters his “ambassadors”, Obama closed by asking them to talk to their friends and neighbors, even to “argue with them and get in their face” to deliver the message about his plans to lower taxes and his support for the Second Amendment.

Do America a big favor.

Let your act of patriotism for 2008 be this:

Before you vote...

GOOGLE:  John McCain Keating Five

Do it for America and then vote your conscience.

"  he’s the one who’s gonna take on the old boys' network,” he said. “In the McCain campaign that’s called a staff meeting!”  "

Finally! a sound bite!
Telling McCain that, "taking on the old boys network is like having a staff meeting" is some funny stuff right there.  Two things about the truth:  1. It hurts.  2. It will set you free.  I sure wish McCain would recognize how he is still a POW to the lies of neo-conservatism.
Obama is the man for us in this challenging time.
all you folks in MSM should stop running stories of the Palin's abuse of power, or her (empty) answers to Sean Hannity. We should focus more on the substand and issues.

John McShame, kept on lying about his support of Government Regulation!?!  and Ms. Palin of course has no answers for any of the financial turmoils that's going on. People are not stupid any more.. We know who knows the answer and those who have been hiding out and try to avoid questions will not be rewarded!!
Funny line.  And true.
I am impressed that Obama has held back on mentioning that John McCain was one of the Keating 5. One could argue that he was naive and that he was a war hero, but he was still had at at best questionable role in the Savings and Loan Crisis.
Barack is getting desperate. Palin has got the Obama/Biden ticket in a state of chaos. How's that workin' for ya?

I'm still wondering why Barbara Walters didn't look McCain squarely in the eye when she tried to "grill him" last week on The View. I guess she was reading from a teleprompter. Hey, looks like Babs and Obama have something in common. Both need a teleprompter to convey their lib message and even give interviews.
Looks like The View has a sense of phony to it.
McCain keeps trying to run against his party (I guess seeing how well it was working for Obama).  The Democrats should take every opportunity they can to refer to John McCain as a Republican when they're blasting the Republican party's disastrous turn at governing.

Rep. Senator John McCain
John McCain and the Republicans (etc).

Do not let him hide behind that maverick nonsense.  He's just as deceitful and corrupt as the rest of them.  And the moosehunter too!
hmmm.  no response from the McCain camp?  odd...

staff meeting... thats a good one!

Great line...
Of course John McCain is going to "take on the old boys network".  What else can he say... They are all "old boys".  I guess he forgot to look in a mirror.  But if he did, what do you think he would see?  I see an "old boy".
Yes, I agree with Chris!  A sound bite at last.  And it is funny enough that it will be repeated over and over!

Yea!
How exactly will McCain counter this?  By trying to turn GOP efforts to kill Fannie and Freddie into "reform" - never mind they had stayed out of subprimes until the GOP made them take on these crappy investments.
I think the most important hypocrisy of McCain's message is that he's going to take on the big wigs on Wall Street and support the folks who live on Main Street, but his entire economic policy is designed to benefit those incompetent CEO's taking golden parachute payments while the middle class gets about zero.

Obama's plan rewards companies that keep jobs here in America. You're not going to see a job-killing CEO like Carly Fiorina taking a $20 million payout and have her taxes reduced as a reward in an Obama administration.

Does Barak Obama think we are stupid?  If he thinks for one second that we believe John McCain is tied into the Good Old Boys network then he is.....
Correct.  John McCain is nothing more than the replacement gear for  George W. Bush when he is extracted from the Republican washington machine.  Only the reality challenged could see it otherwise.
I was so depressed last week when all the media could talk about was fluff, fluff, and more fluff. This week we are back talking about the issues and McFossil doesn't know his a** from his elbow.

Keep up the good work Barack and Joe. I love some of these lines you are coming up with. Punch McFossil in the gut with the truth. woo hoo!!
I wonder how Palin is getting along with McCain's Good Ole Boys since she accepted her nomination and they wrote her a speech? This really can't bode well with Todd the stay at home Nanny.
Full Moon -- Look in the mirror -- do you see that big "L" on your forehead.

If John McFossil was sitting next to me I wouldn't look him in the eye either. I might see his soul, which would make me sick to my stomach.
Senator Obama gets a big bounce for that line, I love it...I guess McCain is still in that staff meeting with the old boys network...

Right back at ya McCain ...you go Senator Obama...
Funny how no one mentions that Biden is one of the "Old Boys" or that Ted Kennedy, the most powerful Dem in the party, is one of the "Old Boys".  Give me a break!

I also find it humorous how people have chided McCain for taking money from Wall Street doners and stating that he can't reform Wall Street as a result. Well, here is the interesting fact: Obama has raised 10M from Wall Street, while McCain has raised 7M.

Who has more of a vested interest in maintaining the Wall Street status quo?
Obama is on fire take it all the way to the white house. John Mccain no's nothing about the economy
Go ahead and have a Barack Obama believer get in my face and argue. I have flipped every last one of my relatives, their closest friends and two of my coworkers into McCain voters in November. I will not be voting myself, I do not like McCain, but I detest Barack Obama and the direction Democrats will take this country. So, by all means, send your weak minded over to get into my face.

I think he meant the 'really, really' old boy's network.
ORDER!!...Order please.....let's get this Staff Meeting under way.

-- John McCain
The staff meeting comment.......now that was funny and a great sound bite!!!

Obama/Biden 08
This coming from a guy that comes from the biggest political Good Old Boys Club - Chicago, Illinois. You're really reaching now Obama.

And the Good Old Boys Club just got a new member. Her name is Sarah. Everyone now, say hello to Sarah.
Full Moon, Obama/Biden aren't showing desperation.

your constantly pushing out the neocon message proves you and all your fellow Rush Prothero footsoldiers are getting desperate.  the american people are getting to know the candidates, and in 9 days i think we will begin to see what the real electorate will be like.  have fun until then...
McThuselah will set up a commision to look at the ecomomic crisis that gets worse every day. Brilliant! And which "old boys" will he put on that commision? Carlie Fiorina will chair it, I'm sure.
It's not so much that I want to see McCain in the White House - BUT - I do NOT want to see obama win.
A vote for McCain is a vote AGAINST obama - that is really the only choice
Oh, and Barack, I SAW the speech.  When you lose this election, don't bank on a career in stand-up comedy, because you stink.  uh, uh, uh...no good.

You failed as a Senator, failed as an instructor of Constitutional law, let your licenseto practice law lapse in 1996, and, from all accounts, neither you nor the community know what you organized.

Let's see, does anybody need a trash collector?
Some of Obama's biggest contributors are from Wall Street including Lehman Bros.

The Democrats had control of Congress for 2 years and they did nothing to stop oncoming the economic crisis either and regulate the greedy corrupt businesses.  They only clamor for change when it suits them politically.

McCain might be tied to the "good old boys" but Obama is tied to the elitists and Hollywood.  Neither side identifies with most of America.

Both sides are full of hypocrites and BS.
FT Knolles:
"And the Good Old Boys Club just got a new member. Her name is Sarah."
------------------------------------------------------
You are right, of course.  Sarah Palin is no different from John McCain and all of the corrupt insiders that have created the economic collapse we now face.

Is that the point you were really trying to make?  If so, you're as big a help to McCain as Carly Fiorina.
Ace, Phoenix, AZ: you miss the point that there are two types of politicians: those who take money for favors, and those who take money to enact their vision.

McCain is the former, Obama the latter.

money is only a lever when the politician allows it to be.  McCain is moved by those who support him (VP pick prime example...) while Obama has not caved to the special interests just because they donate to his campaign.

Finally focusing on the economy, which is where thsi election needed to be all along.  One candidate just now realized we are in mess, and one has had a plan all along.  It saddens me that it takes economic chaos to divert attention from Sarah Palin, but the issues are finally front and center again.
Like many Americans, I was so "hoping" that this election  would be different for the Dems, but I now relaize that it won't. I have come to the conclusion that it is not even about the individual candidates, but rather the strategists and the media. Let's face it,we Dems are always winning until we get to the home stretch, and pooff, there it goes!!! Until Dems learn how to fight this Rovian Machine, the GOP could run Casper the friendly Ghost and we could run the progeny of Albert Einstein, and we would still lose. Their attacks and "spins" are just that effective. Also, the media is comprised of wealthy Americans , most of whom do NOT want to pay higher taxes, so they champion the Republican candidate. his will continue to be the case until it no longer works.
McCain has been n the OLD BOYS NETWORK for as long as I can remember it really upsets me when I see those McCAIN ADS LYING ABOUT BARRACK & bidden all McCAIN/PALIN DO IS LIE.
Boy this is rich. Is there an "older boy" than ted Kennedy himself not to mention the multifaceted kennedy connections. Add that to the Clinton machine,
the chicago machine, & Obama's own "old school ties" & this is the biggest joke on the web!
Straight Talk :

Hehe, good fake out...you had me going there with the first line :D
Drip       Drip         Drip          Drip

Go read about Biden then come back.  You wont sound so dumb.
Cindi in Louisiana (Sent Wednesday, September 17, 2008 5:23 PM)

Cindi:

That is why this eletion is not Obama's to win or lose but the Amercian people's to win or lose. People need to stop placing the entire burden on Obama and to take it upon themselves to say "enough" and go out and vote for Obama. He cannot do it alone.
Go Obama! Go
In addition to the Keating five scandle. Look into the calls being made in Fla. Penn. and Ohio, and by now elsewhere, to jewish voters, the false ballots sent out by McCain and the attempts to disenfranchise people with foreclosures in Mich. Yes John McCain and the republicians put country first.
Obama is easily one of the most self-centered and hypcritical politicians I've ever seen. Where was all his "reform" in corrupt Illinois and in Chicago?  If he's such a reformer then he would've cleaned up Cook County and all the "good 'ol boys" there.  He's done the complete opposite...blended in with the other crooks there and rubbed shoulders with the convicted Tony Rezko (remember his sweet real estate deal?) and unrepentant terrorist Bill Ayers.  His own VP running mate (Biden) has his Senate campaigns run by a lobbyist.  There is such hypocrisy in all this.
Keep repeating that line Barack, over, and over again ! That is what the LIV wants to hear ! It stick's in their head.
Hey, there was 5 years where he had to have his staff meeting in a POW cell.
Calling all lobbyist. McCain staff meeting now in session!--That's the best line of this campaign!
just on the air, Gawkers has hacked Palin's personal email account and are displaying the emails online. When will these people be going to jail?
How (Keating 5) could John (Keating 5) McCain, in ANY way (Keating 5) be connected (Keating 5) to (Keating 5) any sort (Keating 5) of (Keating 5) "old-boys" (Keating 5) network (Keating 5)?

Well - one thing, maybe - wasn't the S&L scandle of the Reagan miracle that caught up John MCCain with the so-called "Keating 5" also the one where Bush's brother Neil got bailed out?
