Viva Zapatero!

Posted: Thursday, September 18, 2008 12:20 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and Lauren Appelbaum
This has generated a lot of blogosphere chatter... In an interview with Radio Caracol Miami, McCain appeared to either not know who the leader of Spain is, confused him with a Latin American dictator, or just didn't hear the question (although the interviewer did say: "I'm talking about the president of Spain"). Note: Zapatero is prime minister of Spain, not president.

McCain adviser Randy Scheunemann told the Washington Post that McCain knew who the interviewer was talking about. "The questioner asked several times about Senator McCain's willingness to meet Zapatero (and id'd him in the question so there is no doubt Senator McCain knew exactly to whom the question referred). Sen. McCain refused to commit to a White House meeting with President Zapatero in this interview."

Below is McCain's conversation with the interviewer....

Q: Senator, finally, let's talk about Spain. If you are elected president, would you be willing to invite President Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero to the White House to meet with you?

McCain: I would be willing to meet with those leaders who are friends and want to work with us in a cooperative fashion. And by the way, President Calderon of Mexico is fighting a very, very tough fight against the drug cartels. I am glad we are now working in cooperation with the Mexican government on the Merida plan. And I intend to move forward with relations and invite as many of them as I can, of those leaders to the White House.

Q: Would that invitation be extended to the Zapatero government, to the president himself?

McCain: I don't, I, you know, honestly, I have to look at relations, and the situations, and the priorities but I can assure you I will establish closer relations with our friends, and I will stand up to those who want to do harm to the United States of America. I know how to do both.

Q: So you have to wait and see if he is willing to meet with you, will you be able to do it in the White House?

McCain: Well, again, I don't. All I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the hemisphere that are friends with us and standing up to those who are not. And that's judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America and the entire region.

Q: Okay, what about you? I'm talking about the President of Spain.

McCain: What about me what?

Q: Okay, are you willing to meet with him if you are elected president?

McCain: I am willing to meet with any leader who is dedicated to the same principles and philosophy that we are for human rights, democracy, and freedom. And I will stand up to those that do not.

Meetings?  We don' need no stinkin' meetings.
OMG!!! Someone put this man in the nursing home where he belongs and have Palin take care of him for the next eight years.
GO OBAMA GO!!!!!!!!!
God help us all if this man is "elected" President of the United States of America
... and I thought it couldn't get any worse
Seriously, is anyone really going to vote for this man?

This election will be a democratic landslide.  I want a President that is more intelligent than the average Joe-McCain is not it.

Obama/Biden  08
The old man should not be running for president.  His senior moments are too numerous.  It's almost embarrassing to see.  It's frightening to think that RNC info manipulation, ads, and plain ol' party loyalty could possibly put this man in power.  His policies in my view are wrong for the country anyway, but this guy could start drooling and babbling in a couple of months.  Question?  What's the procedure if McCain should die before the election?  Do they have to renominate or does Palin move up?
What does Latin America have to do with Spain?  Does he not realize that Spain is not in this hemisphere?
Wow!  Shocking!!
Oh my God...Let's pray that Republicans do not come into power. Not to know who the President of Spain is, is simply unbelievable. And not to know where Spain is, is even worse.

We need to invest in Democratic Education in this country.

I pray Democrats win in this election.
OK!  McCain also confused Putin as the President of Germany instead of Russia(small mistake!) more than once!  Now this!
This man is not qualified to be President of the United States!
And he will be the one with his finger on the button to launch the bombs?
He is an embarassment!  I do not know if he is getting senile or just not educated, but this is not acceptable.

PLEASE PEOPLE, PAY ATTENTION.

ONE MORE REASON WHY I AM VOTING OBAMA/BIDEN '08
McCain knows who that lefty is!

He is the same one that turned his back on us in Iraq and wanted the world to cry with him when those same terrorists blew up their trains!

Spain is an "ally" but turned on us in the rendition controversy. Those renditions were definitely scary to the world, but worked great for us. Bad guys got the treatment they deserved at the hands of their Islamic brothers and we got some good information out of it.

Trying to pin this as an "aging" McCain story is simple-minded at best.
And thus the fall continues.  I'm not an expert of European governments, but the staggering incompetence put forth from both McCain and Palin worries me about how much further our great nation will decline if we Americans make the mistake and vote Republicans into White House in November.

Viva Obama/Biden!
Oh My GAWD ! ! !

Please, let this country pick someone who isn't so confused about the world...
This is just too scary to be a possible POTUS candidate.
This is the man who questions Barack Obama's foreign credentials?  Ask yourself, who's REALLY ready to lead?

Obama/Biden '08!
lol.  McCain is a disaster, it's hillarious.  He makes Bob Dole look like he's 25 years old.
He sounds like a babbling idiot.  He cannot give a straight clear and concise answer on anything. McCain and Palin just keep saying how ready they are, etc., but they never give a clear concise plan or example of anything in the past, present, or future that would lead anyone to believe they would help us get to a better place as a nation.
Foreign policy experience eh? God help us, God help us all!
McCain doesn't have a clue what he is doing or saying.  It is frightening.

Please go back to Arizona NOW.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08
He's taking a hard line with Spain because they pulled troops out of Iraq, which is dumb, because we're supposed to be trying to repair our standing in the world.

I find this less comforting than if he had just had a senior moment. This is deliberate Bush-style foreign policy.
The space cadet is at it again. I forgot my name and what am I doing here. Dementia setting in if I may say. Let's see how the McCain surrogates and lobbyist spin this.
WOW!  IT WAS LIKE THE RECORD STUCK ON ONE RESPONSE!  IS HE AS INCAPABLE OF INDEPENDENT THOUGHT AS HIS RUNNING MATE?  (WHO BY THE WAY, HAS TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTED ME BY CLAIMING TO BE A REFORMER AND NOW LETS A BUNCH OF MET TELL HER WHAT TO SAY...)
Why does he sound so confused? Like he was being asked about the Bush Doctorine or something...
Maybe McCain is getting enough sleep?  Didn't I read recently where he doesn't like to get up before 9am
or he isn't as sharp?
Didn't Abbot & Costello do a routine like that?
So basically he doesn't know if Spain is a friend or foe so he has to answer in generalities. Can you say Alzheimer's?
Wow,
does McCain think that Spain in in Latin America. That just crazy
Lovely- he's not even in office, and he's already embarrassing us!  Anyone who votes for this undereducated, impetuous incompetent is even more of an imbecile than he is!
O.M.G.
he didn't know who he was talking about.
or perhaps he remembered Emiliano Zapata (bet you money, that's who he was talking about!)

ROFLMAO
This sounds a lot like the conversation I just had with my grandpa. I was asking him how he liked the nurses at the assisted living facility, and he kept talking about the squash he had with dinner last Thursday. And he kept calling me Joey.
A McCain presidency would leave us with NO allies in the world.

With Obama, all of Europe, Africa, and much of the Middle East and South America would be on our side. Obama is the LEADER we need, McCain is just a belligerent isolationist who wants to tell everyone else to f*ck off.
Listening to the interview on huffingtonpost.com, McCain really does not acknowledge that Zapatero is from Spain initially noting Mexico and later Latin America. Spain never comes across McCains lexicon in that interview.
He seems really confused!
Oy!
It keeps getting scarier....McCain just had a senior moment. May be he is showing some early signs of Dementia
Now I understand a lot more about his choice of running mate.  They obviously relate on an intellectual level.

Palin can't see Spain from Alaska so she will be no help here. I don't know which is worse. McCain trying to read notes or ad libbing. The way his mind comes and goes is very very scary. I think his first wife would agree that his finger close to any button is a puzzle he can't solve. There are days when he is stumped for an answer to a simple "hello".
The Guy is loosing his mind, can you imagine him making these kind of mistakes with other world leaders who may not be our friends?  He needs to go home and watch the politics from afar....not be nvolved in it...Obama/Biden 08.
It doesn't sound like he didn't know who Zapatero is, rather it sounds like he forgot where Spain is.

For heaven's sake.  No wonder Spain pulled its troops out of Iraq.  Who would want to be allied in that folly with people who behave like this?

If the train bombings, the election that followed, and the pullout of Spanish troops didn't get McCain's attention, then you DO have to wonder what on earth he REALLY knows about terrorism, foreign policy, or just plain what's going on in the world.

Pat from Boston -- Hello.  Some of us old News Holers are still here and got your memo.  And also hello to C A, Full Moon, and the rest.
Subcommander Marcos is, I guess in McCain's world, the leader of Spain. WOW! Straight out of the Palin playbook.
Someone needs to ensure his velcro is securely fastened... he's about to spring a leak
This man is running for president, now he's scaring me more than Palin.
I've thought about McCain's age long and hard. I never wanted to put social limits on an American's ability to be Presidnet. But....he's just too old. Maybe another 72 year old would be sharper, more able to inspire confidence that he's not too old to function in such a demanding job. But...he's just too old. He isn't sharp enough. He isn't cogent enough. He isn't up to it.
What's most disturbing is that McCain isn't listening to the question, only thinking ahead to what his canned response is supposed to be.
What Mr. "I'm a Foreign Policy Genius" McCain is saying is that he has no clue what our relationship with Spain is, and would have to find out before he could answer the question..... that is what:

"I don't, I, you know, honestly, I have to look at relations, and the situations, and the priorities ...."

means.
But some will vote for this guy and Plain for the sake of race and gender... some will rather that this country go down the tubes and be taken over by another country (because soon we will owe countries like China and Russia too much money)than to let Senator Obama become president.... WHY?????  If someone throws me a rope a when drowning, I'm don't what color he is as long as he can save me.....
To the tune of "The Rain in Spain Stays Mainly in the Plain:"

McCain in Spain is aptly called insane.

or

Who reigns in Spain escapes Mccain's old brain.

or

Explain, McCain why do you diss poor Spain?

I could go on all day...
And seriously, what kind of retarded philosophy is that - we only meet with our friends??? If that's our approach, how will we EVER turn enemies into friends?

Think about it - with McCain's philosophy, we NEVER would have changed our relationships with England, Germany and France - all countries who are now strong allies. In order for that to ever happen, we have to be willing to talk to people. This whole attitude of folding our arms and turning around with our nose up in the air is a very childish approach to dealing with conflict.
This is the worst that I have seen Senator McCain.  He is all over the place. Someone from his campaign needs to call a doctor. He did not look good on Morning Joe on Monday. He is not in good health.
John's problem he does not know where Spain is he can't see it from Arizona or D.C.
Maybe we should build a fence between us and Spain.  Might help with the drug cartels, you know they all speak the same language, so they must be drug smugglers too....
Someone needs to call a Doctor. This poor excuse for a man needs committed. He is actually NUTS!
"All I can tell you is that I have a clear record of working with leaders in the hemisphere that are friends with us and standing up to those who are not. And that's judged on the basis of the importance of our relationship with Latin America and the entire region."

Spain is certainly not in "the region" of Latin America, but Spain is just barely in our hemisphere, so I guess McCain could be talking about Spain, but I don't know. It really sounds to me like he thinks he's being asked about a Latin American leader, and one he doesn't know much about at that.

Spain is a member of NATO and the EU, and they have troops serving in Afghanistan. They are our ally. Is this how McCain is going to restore America's image abroad? By refusing to meet even with our allies?

I think the McCain campaign was between a rock and a hard place here; either admit McCain was confused about the question or snub Spain. I guess they felt snubbing Spain was less of a political liability.
