McCain says he'd fire SEC head

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Appearing at an Iowa rally with his running mate today, John McCain called for the firing of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox, saying that the Bush appointee has “betrayed the public’s trust.”

“The Chairman of the SEC serves at the appointment of the President and in my view has betrayed the public's trust,” McCain said. “If I were President today, I would fire him.”

Video: Saying financial "markets were turned into a casino," Presidential candidate John McCain calls for the firing of SEC chief Christopher Cox.

Asked to respond to McCain’s criticism of Cox, White House spokesperson Dana Perino told NBC News, “The chairman has the president's confidence.”

In their remarks today, both McCain and Sarah Palin launched hits aplenty against Joe Biden, who said in an interview this morning that, when it comes to tax hikes on those making over $250,000, “It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."

Telling his audience that “today Senator Obama's running mate said that raising taxes is patriotic,” McCain responded that  “Raising taxes in a tough economy isn't patriotic. It's not a badge of honor. It's just plain dumb.”

He also accused Obama of politicizing the financial crisis, whose culprits – McCain said – have been funders of the Democratic nominee’s presidential run. “He didn't lift a hand to avert this crisis,” said McCain. “While the leaders of Fannie and Freddie were lining the pockets of his campaign, they were sowing the seeds of the financial crisis we see today and they also enriched themselves with millions of dollars in payments."

Introducing her running mate, Sarah Palin also accused Obama of attributing blame without offering solutions to complex problems. “He likes to point the finger of blame, but has he ever really lifted a finger to help?” she asked. “Has he ever reached out a reformers’ hand to the other side of the aisle?”

Palin incorrectly told the crowd that “We’re so happy to be here in Grand Rapids…” -- the location of yesterday’s town hall -- rather than Cedar Rapids, where the pair appeared today. But Palin got the city’s motto right when she said she was happy to be in the City of Five Seasons.

Wow! that's his big economy solution!  Make the SEC head a scape goat!  NEvermind that the only reason why big corporate america is so unregulated and hence why we're in the current mess, is because of the de-regulation movement started by Reagan and continued by the republicans since then, including McCain.
Does he know the guys name.  He might try to fire the President of Spain.  McBlinky's cheese is beginning to slip off the cracker and to support this man is to risk the needs of the nation.
McCain where have you been for the last 26 years? Never helped with womens issues. Could go on and on but you know who you are.
Where do they think the government gets the money to pay our troops, fund the extra programs to take care of the medical needs of the soldiers & their families, etc.. ?

I think the last number I heard was that we are spending 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq.

News flash that money comes from somewhere.  We can't continue to borrow it from the Chinese.

This war has cost money.  Yellow ribbons on your car is nice but not enough.  Time to pony up & back the talk with action.
While the president nominates and the Senate confirms the SEC chair, a commissioner of an independent regulatory commission cannot be removed by the president.

McCain just flunked the job application
I wonder how many democrats who make over $250,000 have donated money to the US Government over and beyond what they actually owed.  There is nothing stopping the democrats to pay more to the government, just to show us how patriotic they really are.
Apparently "foot in mouth" disease is running rampant within both parties today.  I still don't think the Republicans could find a noteworthy economic policy with a large flashlight and a map.
No John McHoover thinking that you and a second rate Beauty queen oh not your wives the other former beauty queen have a clue. She is your puppet and you are a puppet. I guess my question is who is pulling the strings.

Gee
Maybe McCain whould have named Hillayr his VP

He's sounding like a Democrat as he starts to sink in the polls

Can you say PHONY ?

Don't Eat the Yellow Snow !!

McCain/Palin, More of the Same
First Read: Joe Biden, who said in an interview this morning that, when it comes to tax hikes on those making over $250,000, “It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."

===============

Is Biden the biggest idiot in Washington? Here Joe, lets blow your mind with a new idea. How about you guys and gals in DC spend a little bit less. You know, just to help America get out of the rut.
If I were in Sara Palin's shoes, I would be very quiet about Senator Obama. I wonder if she was even familiar with his name before she blinked and accepted John's offer to run (Charlie). After not being able to answer a question on what she brings to the table on foreign policy in a scripted, hand picked forum, she should not want to be in the spotlight too much. By the way, when does she Meet the Press and do other interviews, she says she is ready. Palin is a joke. She is the equivalent of sending someone an empty gift box for their birthday. Pitiful Palin, we can't wait to see the last of you.
Palin is an idiot, the same can be asked of McCain who served in the Senate for 26 years!
I don't totally agree with raising taxes as patriotic but I can see the need of the sacrifice for the greater good. I surely wouldn't mind my taxes being raised if my job decided to pay me 250K instead of the usual 55K I'm making now.
This seems disingenuous. SEC does not have the regulatory jursidiction over investment banking market as they do over consumer banking -- a restriction, ironically enough, McCain has championed over the years he' invested in of de-regulation at all costs.
And how does firing the guy fix the problem?  Will that make my 401K be worth the money I have invested?  Still NO SOLUTIONS.  Where is Bush?  Does he not know that he is still the POTUS?  McCain will say anything he thinks people want to hear.  He doesn't have a clue about the economy.  So the real question for those on the fence is what scares you more...a half black man or an ignorant one?

Get real.
Obama/Biden
This Message Brought to You By the Blackberry invented by McCain
What are the 'Five' Seasons ?

Lying must be one of them if the McCain/Palin Circus is in town !!

Don't Eat the Yellow snow !
Well does anybody remember the Keeting Five?  Enough said.
The RNC must be very proud of these two idiots that they nominated.  Between the two of them, they can't get anything right from what city they are in to the leaders of Foreign Gov.
Please people think long and hard before you vote and bring out great country all the way down to the bottom of the pile
He should fire all the lobbyists in his campaign, and he should remind himself that he was part of the Keating Five.
I am sure if McCain had been president he would have the smae people in the same appointed offices. He would have the same people telling him what to do and who to hire as GWB. The same people that will be running him if he should be elected.
As for Joe Biden, I guess all the patriots that have had all the tax cuts for the last 7 years really arnt that patriotic when it comes to their fortunes. I earn
below the poverty line and will gladley give more of what little I have for my country. Joe Biden is correct.

Obama/Biden
marty
Raising taxes for those who are fortunate to make more than $250,000  ... 95% of the Americans are not affected by that, my friend. So if the rich pay a little more for the country in need - they are the ones who can afford it.

The middle class does not go up to people who make $5Mio a year as McCain stated. Up there, you are rich as in upper class. Although, when you have $100Mio like McCain you may think otherwise.
There he goes again, making emotional, kneejerk pronouncements as most likely without knowing all the facts.

Don't get me wrong. If this guy isn't doing his job, he should be fired. But hearing McCain bluster and blather about it in response to a current crisis doesn't sound like a measured response.

Oh, and the line about Obama using the economic situation for political gain, yeah, that ought to work. The stench of desperation sets in for a moment, while the McCain camp simultaneously tries to convince its candidate for president that, see, Spain really is in Europe.
Wow did she really say that Biden is dumb but then didn't know what town she was in???
where was he 6 months ago, a year ago, or any time in the last 26 years???
ummm...somebody should tell john mccain that the president CANT FIRE the head of an independent regulatory commission...

geesh...and this guy wants to be president?
“He likes to point the finger of blame, but has he ever really lifted a finger to help?”

- i'd like to ask you the same this mrs. palin

Palin incorrectly told the crowd that “We’re so happy to be here in Grand Rapids…” -- the location of yesterday’s town hall -- rather than Cedar Rapids, where the pair appeared today.

- hahaha good job sarah! she can't even get this right.
Did anyone tell McLazy that the government is being run by a Republican White House? You can't change your uniform once you're on the field. As Chris Mathews said yesterday, " You can't run from your own party".
Too bad the president does not have the authority to fire the SEC chairman.
That's the trouble with the government, when they get in trouble, at least when the when the Democrats get in trouble, they think of successful hard working Americans as their own personal piggy bank. The only piggy I see though are the Democrats. It so much fun for the Democrats to steal the money from those successful people and give to the least productive people, and call themselves hereos for doing so. Buying votes is a major pass time for the Democrats.
During war time all presidents (except for Bush) have raised taxes.  Bush lowered taxes.  Paying higher taxes is one way how Americans contribute to the war effort.

We are borrowing $12+ billion a month from China to pay for the wars.

Not raising taxes during war time is unpatriotic!
*yawn*

You can run McCain/Palin . . .

But you can't hide from your record . . .

When will John McCain admit he was wrong about the economy? When will the media ask him that question?

P.S. Why is it "patriotic" to spend billions of dollars to help other countries survive, but "unpatriotic" for MILLIONAIRES to pay THEIR FAIR SHARE of taxes when then country is facing it's biggest budget deficit in history?

As we all suffer with higher gas prices, the oil companies (and Alaska) make record profits!

As we all see our insurance benefits shrinking (if we have insurance) the pharmaceutical inductry makes record profits!

As military families suffer through constant tours of duty with no end in site, Dick Cheney's hand picked private contractor's make record profits!

Billions for Iraq and Georgia? Not a problem!

Pay your taxes here in America - let the whining begin!

It's just shameful.

P.S. The very rich DO NOT PAY their taxes because they know how to HIDE and SHELTER their income. No matter what their tax rate is, this will always be true. So save the "whoa is me" BS.

Did I mention that 70% of corporations pay ZERO TAXES?

Is stealing from people patriotic Joe? Apparently you think it is.

Cedar Rapids.....Grand Rapids......Whatever. It just doesn't matter if you can see Russia from your house.

Re: today's rally

Cindy,

Can I borrow the green pumps?  I think we're talking about financial stuff today so I want to do a kind of "color of money" thing.  Hope there's a green backdrop!!!

Sarah
Oh, Johnny - you're such a maverick! A cow who has wandered off from the herd and needs to be rescued.

" “today Senator Obama's running mate said that raising taxes is patriotic,” "

Yeah, well your running mate said you "know how to win wars," so how dumb was that? Tell us how - setting an aircraft carrier on fire and being taken prisoner, all because you couldn't exercise proper prudence?

"He also accused Obama of politicizing the financial crisis, whose culprits – McCain said – have been funders of the Democratic nominee’s presidential run. “He didn't lift a hand to avert this crisis,” said McCain."

He didn't even PRODUCE his magic wand! Why didn't he prevent this? Wwwaaaaaahhhhhhhh! (BTW - your boss, Sarah, says Obama is scaring people over nothing, so you'd better stop saying "crisis" if you don't want your head over a mantle.)

Did anyone see Chris Matthews last night?  He was EXCELLENT! That's the kind of reporting I would like to see more of!  And not just against the republicans.  Against both parties.  But no one does that anymore.  They let the politicians speak absolute lies, instead of cutting in a saying "you're lying" and then back off!  It is so frustrating!  Hats off to Chris Mattthews!  Finally, a true reporter!  Thank you Chris.
Just how unstable is Senator McCain ?

How is firing the SEC chairman going to instill confidence and calm on Wall Street when that is what the markets need the most ?

His reactionary responses are becoming all too common - bomb Iraq, bomb Iran, "we are all Georgians", etc.

He appears now to bring the same thought processes and actions to domestic policy as he does to foreign policy.

Frightening.
When Joe Biden made his "patriotic speech" was he wearing his Robin Hood tights? Were his Merry Men behind him cheering him on?
Raising taxes on THOSE HURTING is not good: lower and middle class people.  Ironic they say "class" when it should be "Those who are not wealthy won't have taxes increased" with "wealthy" defined as, what was it, over $200,000/year income??  Then tax help to those who NEED it.  Mccain speaks to REPUBLICANS because his wife and him don't want to pay taxes.

The spin is amazing.  Do they teach that to some people from birth or something??
McCain... grow a pair and call for the impeachment of the President.
Do that, and i will then vote for you.
John McLiar, the Driller from Wasilla  on the Pander Express spewing out utter garbage AGAIN!!!!
There is a small problem with McCain's statement:

"First, the president cannot fire an SEC chair. It's procedurally impossible. As ABC News reported, "[W]hile the president appoints and the Senate confirms the SEC chair, a commissioner of an independent regulatory commissions cannot be removed by the president." That seems like the kind of thing McCain ought to know before spouting off on the subject."

The economy certainly isn't helping McCain's cause.  He probably wishes he'd picked Romney, at least then he'd have a chance.

Obama 280, McCain 258
http://voteforamerica.net/electoral.aspx
It's great McCAin wants to get rid of the SEC chair -- Obama wants to throw all of them out -- ALL of them.

In other news, it is patriotic to help your nation through paying a fair share of taxes.  If you are willing to send people to die for their country, certainly you are willing to ask people to pay more taxes. Good grief.  Once again the GOP shows false outrage. I do not think those working class voters in Ohio really care if those of $250,000 are asked to pay a little more.
Grand Rapids . . . Cedar Rapids . . . Czechoslovakia . . . what's that guy in Spain's name? . . . Sunni/Shite . . . the economy's sound . . . the economy's in crisis . . . Bush doctrine? In what regards Charley?

These two don't know what they are talking about and it's showing by the poll numbers changing.
Obama needs to have a postboard behind him, everytime he speaks that shows the actual breakdown of taxes between him and McCain.  If the media won't report it, he needs to.  EVERY TIME he's on camera, that postboard should be right behind him to remind Americans how the taxes really would break down.  I think any middle class American would be horrified to see that under McCain's tax policy, Americans making 2.? million would be getting back $45,000!!@!!!
So its dumb to do something different.  However, it is smart to do the very same things that got us into this financial mess?  Sure, okay, Sen. McCain.  Go back over your notes and see who is in charge of Spain.  Palin, don't get me started on you.  You wouldn't know what reform was if it hit you on your head.  Reform is not hiring cronies to run important departments in government.  Reform is not firing people who don't agree with you.  McCain-Palin, name one thing that you would do that is out of the Republican orthodoxy. Just ONE thing.  McCain has changed every independent thought he had!
Hey McCain watch where you point your finger, you've been in goverment when this all started and agreed with the de-=regulation of all of those companies, Obama was a teenager when you started this mess!!!!!!!!!
Obama needs to continue hitting McCain with "fundamentals are strong"  over and over and over the way the republicans do.  Repeat it ad nauseum.
I’m a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're exotic, different.'
Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers and kill wolves while circling from a helicopter you’re a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
Name your kids Bristol, Willow, Piper, Track & Trig you're a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
Attend 5 different small colleges over six years before graduating, you're well grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years  as a Constitutional Law professor,  spend 8 years as a State Senator  representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United  States Senate representing a state of  13 million people while sponsoring 131  bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and  Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership  experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl,  4  years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than  7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people,  then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking  executive.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you notoriously cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a good Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, and your 19 year old son was convicted of cocaine usage and cutting the fuel lines on 60 school busses, you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.

If you're husband is nicknamed 'First Dude', with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register  to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the  secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now.
