First thoughts: It's still the economy

*** It’s still the economy: The Fed, the Treasury Department, and Congress are all working together (throughout the weekend) to structure a massive bailout plan, and Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson holds a press conference at 10:00 am ET to discuss that. Meanwhile, Obama meets with his economic advisers in Florida to discuss the economic crisis and the Fed-Treasury proposal. Although Obama had promised to unveil his plan to deal with the economic problems, he released a statement saying he was going to delay that until seeing the Fed-Treasury plan. “Given the gravity of this situation, and based on conversations I have had with both Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke, I have asked my economic team to refrain from presenting a more detailed blue-print of how an immediate plan might be structured until the Treasury and the Federal Reserve have had an opportunity to present their proposal.” And, as the New York Times writes, McCain “is expected to lay out a broader view of his approach to the crisis” when he speaks to the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce this morning. This has all turned into an on-the-fly audition for the presidential candidates -- or, as Howard Wolfson put it earlier in the week, a challenge to see who can best answer that 3:00 am phone call.

*** McCain flailing? But you probably know you're not winning the 3:00 am phone call challenge on the economy when 1) you resort to saying your opponent is trying to reap political gain of the current Wall Street troubles; 2) you call for the firing of a guy -- Republican SEC Chairman Chris Cox -- who doesn’t appear to be the culprit here; and 3) your campaign cuts a new TV ad linking your opponent to the former CEO of Fannie Mae, when your own top advisers come from many of the troubled financial institutions (Merrill Lynch’s John Thain and Martin Feldstein, who serves on AIG’s board). Indeed, the McCain campaign has been scrambling to change focus slightly. It launched a Web ad hitting Biden over his remark on taxes yesterday. And last night, McCain took a shot a “risky” Obama, per NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy. (“A vote for Sen. Obama will leave this country at risk during one of the most severe challenges to America’s economy since the Great Depression.”) But is this current economic crisis too consuming for all of these slight distractions to work? McCain's campaign knows it has to be on topic, but if they loosely change the focus to taxes or leadership, it gives him a chance on this issue. If the focus is strictly on the economy, then he's got problems. And this week -- clearly -- the McCain campaign has been off its game.

*** Some needed help: That said, McCain today gets some good news from Fred Hiatt and the Washington Post editorial page, who argue that Obama’s attack that McCain’s “always for less regulation” isn’t quite fair. “But the full quotation from Mr. McCain's March interview with the Journal's editorial board belies Mr. Obama's one-sided rendition. The Republican candidate went on to say, ‘But I am aware of the view that there is a need for government oversight. I think we found this in the subprime lending crisis -- that there are people that game the system and if not outright broke the law, they certainly engaged in unethical conduct which made this problem worse. So I do believe that there is role for oversight.’” More: “It's a reasonable question which candidate has been more attentive to the brewing problems on Wall Street and which has a better prescription for them. But Mr. Obama's attack does not give a fair reading of the McCain record.”

*** Missing In Action, Part XIII: Congress is now getting into the act but President Bush is still choosing to remain largely on the sidelines  -- and more media are noticing and wondering why. He is the nation's first MBA president, so one would think he'd have a lot to say about this mess, right?

*** Dude, where’s my testimony? It might be a he-said-she-said matter, and the Democrat in charge of the investigation didn't help his cause when he talked about "an October surprise." But the latest news in the Troopergate scandal in Alaska doesn't make Sarah Palin -- who's promising to reform and shake up Washington -- look too good. We've now learned that Todd Palin is refusing to testify under subpoena.

*** Poll-a-palooza...:  So many new battleground polls have come out in the last 24 hours, in particular new All State/National Journal and University of Wisconsin surveys. And we think others will be released today. This is the day that RealClear and Pollster.com earn their readers.

*** On the trail: McCain and Palin campaign in Blaine, Minnesota. Obama holds a “Women’s Change” rally in Coral Gables, FL. And Biden stumps in Sterling, VA.

The Sleezoid McCain Express is falling off its tracks again!  Please! Someone show him where Spain is, and has been, for many many centuries!  For someone as old as McDepends, figured he would know...probably did one day, but like most aged people, he's losing his marbles, and losing them fast!
We've now learned that Todd Palin is refusing to testify under subpoena.
****************************************************

I thought that the Palins said that they would fully cooperate with the investigation?  Am I wrong?  Why did they just make this a story?

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Reid and Pelosi are on record saying they don't have a clue to what's going on. Pelosi wants to adjourn and go home. Reid just babbles on endlessly about things he doesn't understand. Meanwhile, the Bush Administration is not asking, but is telling Congress, to get off their fat butts and pass the bills that the Administration needs to get through this problem. If Pelosi and Reid have any brains, they'll pass them, without adding on billions for their political friends, and we'll have solved this mess. Godd thing Bush is providing strong leadership, because Reid and Pelosi, and Obama, sure have not.
"who argue that Obama’s attack that McCain’s “always for less regulation” isn’t quite fair."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I know! It's so unfair when you use someone's own words - verbatim - against them. How dare you Obama!!!

McCain is such a bumbling idiot. He's been all over the place in the last week - flip-flopping within hours, making completely inaccurate statements, and now he's treating an ally, Spain, like they're an enemy.

In order to "prove" he knows something about the economy, he brags about being on the Commerce Committee and having influence over every part of economy - then he turns right around and gives a speech about how "WARshington" failed the people and he's going to hold those fat cats accountable. I mean seriously, this guy is a complete joke!
But the latest news in the Troopergate scandal in Alaska doesn't make Sarah Palin -- who's promising to reform and shake up Washington -- look too good. We've now learned that Todd Palin is refusing to testify under subpoena.

----------------------------------------------

Let it be known...

...TODD AND SARAH PALIN ARE CHICKEN-S***!

How can we trust you to stand up to Putin and Ahmedinejad when you won't stand up to the Alaska Legislature?
"Obama’s attack that McCain’s 'always for less regulation' isn’t quite fair."

Right, because McCain hasn't been consistent on this or any other issue.

The bottom line is that McCain called himself a deregulator. True or not?

He more recently called himself as the guy who could build better regulations, though he also called himself someone who doesn't understand the economy very well.

McCain supporters, please tell me if anything I've paraphrased above isn't true, or even fair.

McCain has reached the point where nothing he says means anything, because he'll probably just contradict those words tomorrow.
Obama is smart not to waste time crafting a plan for the Wall Street mess now that the government is doing something really dumb to fix the problem that the republicans and McCain have laid on us.  The last thing we need is for Bush's idiots like Paulson and Bernanke to offer suggestions when they're part of the problem.

So despicable how "Bush Hugger" McCain and "Sinner" Sarah are using this Wall Street mess to spread more lies about Obama in order to gain political advantage.  After so many clueless comments this week the old fool should just shut up as real Americans see how out of touch with reality he is.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Bipartisan Maverick..that's an oxymoron..

John your more like a bipolar bear lying nut case.
McCain is flailing? Don't see how. He voted 90% with Bush, and Bush seems to be the only one out there solving the banking problem. So Bush and McCain are the same, right? Is that line from Democrats still operative?
You are so yesterday.  That SEC chair thing didn't work out, so right now McCain is in Green Bay blaming the Bush Administration and Congress (of which, of course, he was a part), and accusing Obama of being in bed with the Fannie Mae folks.  Usually, the McCain campaign paints Obama as a fluff-headed celebrity, weak, and inexperienced.  But that would mean he's innocent in this crisis, as he was in the war, so I guess today it's more convenient to paint him as being in charge.

If you allowed images here, I'd tack on a nice pair of bottle-cap decorated flip-flops for the king of the beer industry, whose own campaign staff is up to its ears in lobbyists (who according to McCain won't get past the White House gate if HE is president), and whose financial adviser Phil Gramm really IS at least partially responsible for this mess.

Bush has been more or less MIA since he took office and lots of people voted for him a SECOND time. The most positive thing that will come out of his legacy he did not even do for this country....and that is his HIV/AIDS initiative in Africa (which I am greatful for, but it still speaks to the suckiness that is BUSH)!!!
Enough with the Republican talking points about Obama raising taxes in tough economic times.  Obama will CUT taxes for middle and lower income workers.  You know, the vast majority of us who make less than 250,000 dollars a year.  The ones who will have to spend the extra disposable income because we can’t afford to do much else.  And we all know it’s the American consumer who really drives the economy.

Kinda hard for rich folks to create all those new jobs with their tax cuts when regular folks don’t have the money to buy more goods and services.  Seems to me Obama is making his tax cuts in exactly the right place.  We already tried the McCain/Gramm prescription of more tax cuts for the corporations and the wealthiest two percent of Americans.  Something is trickling down alright, but it sure doesn’t smell like prosperity.  Don’t be fooled again.
Stock market is now even, actually at little above, what it was at the start of the week. And Obama did what to solve the problem? Pelosi, Reid, same question. Bush is the only one that did anything this week to solve the problem. Good for him. Nice job President Bush.
A First Read reader editorial complaint.

Since comments seem to be arbitrarily cut off, sometimes there is one update, sometimes multiple. Can I request that you note "Comments closed" when new comments will no longer be added? Spending time to write and respond to an issue and then never have it appear in the comments discussion is pretty disheartening.

Now back to today's issues!
Didn't john McCain also say he didn't believe the tax payers should be put on hook for these bad loans.
And what's happening..is he in charge of anything?
McCain/Palin a bridge to things that go nowhere..

Mavricks unite for bipartisanship!!!..morons..
YES ! YES ! YES ! ONLY 123 DAYS UNTIL OBAMA/BIDEN TAKES OFFICE.
It's a time of upheaval and a time of fear for voters. They are more comfortable with Obama on the economy but will gladly switch to McCain if he puts together a comprehensive economic safety plan and quits making verbal blunders. Obama does not have this in the bag...

http://www.political-buzz.com/
why has there not been a single story relating the fact that last time this happened John mcCain was investigated for being involved.

Keating 5 had to do with almost the exact same issues

and mccain's relationship[ with the people who were "working the regulators" was too cushy...

and yet now those same people lobbying for deregulation and the fall out that happened literally have just written Mccain's economic plans for the country.

WHY are we not talking about that if tyou are talking about these two candidates.

same story...different time...only now it is Mccain Gramm instead of Mccain Keating

and we are about to vote on whether to give this guy the keys to the kingdom!
The McCain/Palin Ticket Is In A Shambles

While it seems that McCain is now reading from cue cards every time he speaks at his town hall meetings Palin’s ego has forgotten just who is running for President and who is running for VP. Anyone catch Palin’s comment in Iowa yesterday when making a pitch on reform and change ….”that’s just what a Palin/McCain administration will do” she stated.  Opppssssssss!!!!

Do you really want as your President someone who has to read from cue cards to discuss important issues of the day. Especially when the person’s comments are generalizations anyway and do not require any communications of detail.

The Palin Dude refuses to testify in the Trooper Gate investigation. Palin may be innocent of abuse of power as Governor in this instance but a refusal to cooperate or to testify says what to your average voter ……………………… I’m hiding something maybe?  Especially after agreeing to cooperate when the investigation initially started.

Note how recently even many prominent Republicans are quietly wincing at the thought of having Palin in the Whitehouse while a few are even expressing outright total fear of the same.

How many in here have overheard friends, family members or acquaintances state that they just can’t watch this anymore. That McCain and Palin are embarrassing themselves and this country to the point that they feel sorry for McCain and Palin?  Yet we still have people supporting this ticket for the Whitehouse?  Truly amazing.  Truly, truly amazing.
McCain gang wanting to change the subject got to start
calling Obama risky.Well with all the McCain-Palin or as she said Palin-McCain team have not showed much leadership on the ecomony. One day this way next ay this way.If they happen to be elected it will be another 4 years of my way or the highway.
To be frank, after all the OUTRIGHT LIES that John McCain and Sarah Palin have told in this campaign, I really don't want to hear about what is "fair" to John McCain.

Is it fair that we are going through another mortgage based financial meltdown just like the Savings & Loan scandal before, but everyone in the media pretends like they have amnesia on John McCain's role in the Keating Five?

Is it fair that everytime one of Senator Obama's advisors left the campaign, he was accused of "throwing them under the bus", but John McCain has thrown Carly Fiorina, the SEC chairman, Phil Gramm (allegedly), and even the Prime Minister of Spain "under the bus" and the media is silent?

Is it fair that the banks who created all these risky mortgage loans get bailed out, while the consumers who can't pay back the loans when they balloon to ridiculous rates don't?

Is it fair that over 40 million Americans don't have healthcare, and those that do find it covers less and less, and yet we "can't afford" to provide every American with ACCESS to affordable healthchare but we can afford to bail out all the corporate crooks on Wall Street?

Is it fair that the media cries foul if Senator McCain is blamed for something said by Rush Limbaugh, when Senator Obama is blamed for anything anyone he has ever known has ever said or done in their entire life?

Sounds ridiculous, no?
Milton Friedman was asked if the Democrats plans to raise taxes was a good one. He said of the last 40 years that the Democrats were in charge, they raised taxes during 35 of those years, and it didn't solve any problems. So why do the Democrats think it will solve any problems this time?
Of course Mclame is flailing, just taking shots at Obama and Biden, waiting for events to shape his opinion, rather than him shaping events.  It's called POOR LEADERSHIP. That 3:00am call better not be about Spain, or he'll bomb South America!
I'm not complaining about Bush being MIA, because he'd only screw things up even worse than he has (causing te meltdown in the first place.)Let him read a comic book and pick his nose.  The country's better off that way.
Todd Palin knows he's got big 'n' powerfl friends now.  As with Foley (who just got off all charges) he knows that white Repiglicans are ALWAYS above the law.
And, sorry, I still think McRich and his buddy Phil Gramm deregulated us into this mess.
I think tazing 10 years olds is a good idea.
"Bush Hugger" McCain will mark 9/15/08 as the day his campaign died.  After November 4th we'll be seeing him mill about muttering "Beware the Ides of September"!

Man how funny it's been to watch the Dumb and Dumber ticket self destruct with so many clueless gaffes.  Real Americans with a brain will see him for what he is, a liar who only puts McCain First and Country Last.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Interesting how the republicans constantly want "government out" always screaming about "Deregulation"  and yet we are in this crisis because of deregualtion and it is the government that is having to bail out a mess caused because of it.

So because of the greedy, big corporations and deregulation we are in this mess.  Caused by republicans....

The same thing happened during the depression...it was a democrat, FDR, that got us out of that mess, and it will be another democrat, Obama, that will get us out of this republican, deregulation mess.
Of course it's the econom, stupid.
The republicans with their irresponsible,
unfunded spending and criminal policies have
brought our country to it's knees.
And, Barack Obama has the intelligence to
have available and talk to experienced,
credible finance experts,  and   Mccain
has his lobbyists.
You and I can refer to the candidates as McCain and Obama.  Fellow members of the Senate do not just refer to each other singly by their last names.  They may use their first name only, otherwise it is  Mr.,first/last name or Senator/last name.  I have never heard Barack Obama refer to John McCain as McCain.  It would be disrespectful.  John McCain just gave a speech in which he refers to Barack Obama as just Obama.  It is rather like him referring to the Democratic Party as democrats.  He, the honorable, has become the most dishonorable of campaigners.  He is divisive in every way.  If John McCain cannot show his opponent this modicum of respect now that his temperament has been flexed by the election, how will he handle his need to use respect to people he disagrees with as president?
Palin got disinvited to the UN?

Now she has less foreign experience than yesterday?
Look, the Republicans finally have to sleep in the bed they've been making for years. They've been engaging in sleazy tactics with the goal of either winning or avoiding responsibility for anything they do. All you need to do is turn on your TV or read the news. They don't even have to open their mouths anymore without contradicting themselves due to the sleaze and lies.
Pres Bush - Economic Genius:
Is that why the country is so financially sound right now?  We've got the biggest mess since the Great Depression and you think he's a genius?  I guess that makes all those people that bought more house than they could afford geniuses also???
Bush can't help McCain that would prove us all right!!
Congress Approval Rating Is Now 6% (Sent Friday, September 19,

We must vote all those people OUT of Office ! They have done nothing but create this whole mess. Pelosi, Reed, any Dem that was elected 2 yrs ago to ckean up and change the gov as Obama says he'll do, All need to go ! enough of their BS. Time is up and all of you need to be shown the door !
It speaks volumes about McCain and his campaign when speaking about the issues is considered a problem.  Take away the distractions and Rovian attacks from the McCain campaign, and you've taken away their entire gameplan.
Wolf Blitzer didn't know about Biden's past plagiarism? Wolf Blitzer! He said he's have to look into that. And these guys are supposed to be the best journalists we have? College newspapers do a better job.
Palin's Brother-in-law (Sent Friday, September 19, 2008 9:43 AM)

The kid asked if he could try it. Palin's brother-in-law said no. The kid persisted. The brother-in-law said no. The kid persisted. The brother-in-law gave in, placed the taser on the lowest possible non-threatening level and let the kid try it. Big deal. The kid tried it and learned. Quit trying to make it out that the brother-in-law grabbed a young innocent child, held him down and tasered the hell out of him. The kid is probably a little sh-- anyway.
It's funny - watching the liberals panic. They're down to one theme now, "McCain lied!" "Palin lied" "Bush lied!". You're getting really pathetic libs.
40 years in the republican party and I'm through with their economics of trickle down!  I've been trickled down and down and now to think John McCain wants to privatize social security and continue tax and economic policies that work for a small percentage of Americans...but not for any of my friends or family.  Besides after hearing Sen. McCain's verbal blunders lately I'm not sure he's capable of continuing long, even as a senator.  I'm voting for Senator Obama.  Also, McCain like Bush has been wrong about the war in Iraq.
"That said, McCain today gets some good news from Fred Hiatt and the Washington Post editorial page, who argue that Obama’s attack that McCain’s “always for less regulation” isn’t quite fair"
****************************************************

Give me a break Chuck Todd. What a shocker that McCain would get props from the media? It is a wonder they are not getting paid by him because they try to revive his pitiful candidacy all day every day. He has lost his chops as an "expert" on foreign policy issues. He is out there saying we won't be with other NATO countries. He has lost his mind. He spewed at least 10 minutes of lies today in his speech. Newsweek and others have already debunked any advisory relationship between Obama and campaign and that Raines guy. We are sick of all the lies. Not only from the McCain campaign but from you, the media. When you don't call out lies as lies - you become a LIAR.

There is an article out this morning where a GOP leader in New Mexico is quoted as saying that Latinos won't vote for a black person because and I quote,
"The truth is that Hispanics came here as conquerors," he said. "African-Americans came here as slaves.

"Hispanics consider themselves above blacks. They won't vote for a black president."

Forget troopergate---is it Patriotic or American to belong to the Alaska Independance Party?  To throw some of that Wright crap back in your face.........how could Sara sit around her house for years, listen to that Unamerican Treasonous Trash coming out of her own husband's mouth, and expect to be the next Dolly Madison?????
Enough with the Republican talking points about Obama raising taxes in tough economic times.  Obama will CUT taxes for middle and lower income workers.  You know, the vast majority of us who make less than 250,000 dollars a year.  The ones who will have to spend the extra disposable income because we can’t afford to do much else.  And we all know it’s the American consumer who really drives the economy.

That's just MAJOR BS ! Obama is GOING to raise every tax he can ! He is a lair and cheat and CAN NOT be trusted. If he lies about his background and upbringing he will lie about any and everything !
Where is Bush?  The economy is in a shambles with more 600,000 jobs lost just this year, and Bush is AWOL again.  Bush is having another Katrina moment, and Cheney can't be found.
"This is the day that RealClear and Pollster.com earn their readers."

Way to leave out FiveThirtyEight.com there guys.  Classy.
Do the chickenhawks see their senile candidate self imploding everytime he opens his mouth? He was a good POWPOWPOWPOWPOWPOW but sucks as a presidential candidate...he will say anything or throw anyone under  the bus to win...typical repugnant
Has anyone called out Sarah Palin on the fact that she has joined John McCain in stealing ideas from Barack Obama- and trying to pass them off as her own?  The whole idea of "putting the government checkbook online"- yup, that was the objective of the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act of 2006- with bipartisan co-sponsorship led by Senators Tom Coburn and Barack Obama.

Welcome to the party, Sarah.  Try to keep up.
How can you just refuse to respond to a subpoena?  Ordinary citizens must respond.  At least that is what was taught in school civics classes. I guess you just need a title like "first dude."
"Todd Palin is refusing to testify under subpoena."

Why don't they do what would be done to me in this situation, throw his ass in jail till he testifies
The McCain team off their game? No they are not gang. Their game is to focus on the trivial, to spread dubious statements about the Democrats, and avoid the issues. That is exactly where they are today.

Next up are social security and let's watch McCain explain why privitizing it would have not caused that to tank along with the financial markets. Just think - the Republicans would have privitaized it only to nationalize it now. At what cost?
Big O wants to wait and see what happens so he'll know what side to be on.  That has been his pattern all along.  Go with whatever seems to be working, even though he had no part in making it work.  Congress does nothing, so Big O is going to have to side with Bush on this one, since Bush is the only one who is fixing the problem.
