Obama: McCain 'a little panicked'

Posted: Friday, September 19, 2008 2:50 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- As officials in Washington continued work on a plan to rescue a teetering financial system, Obama responded to McCain's efforts to paint him as a "Washington insider" complicit in the financial crisis, calling it a "panicked" move by the Arizona senator.

“This morning, Senator McCain gave a speech in which his big solution to this world wide economic crisis was to blame me for it,” Obama said to boos from the crowd of about 8,000 people at a South Florida rally. “This is the guy who spent nearly three decades in Washington and after spending the entire campaign saying I haven’t been in Washington long enough he apparently now is willing to assign me the responsibility for all of Washington’s failures.”

“I think it’s pretty clear that Sen. McCain is a little panicked right now,” he added. “At this point he seems to be willing to say anything or do anything or change any position or violate any principle to try and win this election.”

Throughout his roughly 40 minute speech, the senator also stressed the differences between himself and John McCain on issues of concern to women.

The Democratic nominee spoke of his commitment to equal pay for equal work, pointing out that McCain had opposed legislation to help women get equal pay, and said McCain had called Roe v. Wade a “flawed decision” and was running on a platform to outlaw abortion even in cases of rape and incest, an issue some of his campaign’s ads have been highlighting as part of an effort to win over the women voters who will be critical in this election.

“Change means a president who will stand up for choice, who understands that five men on the Supreme Court don’t know better than women and their families and their doctors about what’s best for their health,” he said. “That’s why I fought so hard in Illinois and Washington to stop laws that overturn Roe v Wade. That’s why I am committed to appointing judges who understand how law operates in our daily lives, judges who will uphold the values at the core of our constitution. That’s why I will never back down from defending a woman’s right to choose.”

The senator said McCain’s health care plan would hurt families and give insurance companies “free rein” to discriminate against women with histories of breast cancer and other illnesses. He stressed Joe Biden’s authorship of the Violence Against Women Act.

Telling the crowd he wasn’t too far away from qualifying for an AARP card, Obama said he would protect Social Security, unlike his opponent.

“John McCain’s talked about privatizing social security,” he said. “Imagine if you had some of your social security money in the stock market right now, how you’d be feeling about the prospects or your retirement. Without social security half of elderly women would be living in poverty. Half. If my opponent had his way millions of Americans would have had their social security tied to stock market this week. Millions would have watched as the market tumbled and their nest egg disappeared before their eyes."

He was briefly interrupted early in his speech by a group of black protestors holding signs with phrases like “Blacks Against Obama” and others suggesting the senator had been endorsed by the Ku Klux Klan. They were eventually escorted out by arena security

Obama, who was introduced by former Clinton supporter Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, ended his pitch to women with a homage to his former Democratic rival.

“I think we’re up for the challenge –we always have been. That’s why I’m standing here today, because of what my mother and my grandmother did for me,” he said. “That’s why all of us are here today because of all our parents and our grandparents but especially all of the women who came before us. Who reached out for the ballot to raise families who traveled those lonely roads to be the first ones in the boardrooms and the court room, and the battlefields and the factory floors. Women like my friend, Hillary Clinton who put those 18 million cracks in that glass ceiling. So that my daughters and all our on and daughter could dream a little bigger, reach a little higher.”

Panicked is one word for it.

I think harsher words is dishonorable, not principled, lying about putting country first, etc.

Oh, John McCain of 2000, I miss you. While I may not have agreed with you on everything, at least i knew you had honor and where you stood.
Heh..."panicked" isn't even the right word.

Plain and simple, McCain's bloody and battered, barely standing on his feet.

One more solid punch and the man's down for the count.

Sorry, Johnny-Boy.  Time's up.
Sen. Obama said it all there is no need for commenting on the truth!
“At this point he seems to be willing to say anything or do anything or change any position or violate any principle to try and win this election.”

Yes, barach, he does.  And the real shame is that after he trades all his dignity and honor for votes he will find he still will not have a majority....and at that point, just what will he have?
Go get em Obama!!
obama's the REAL straight talk express!
For once, I have to say Sen. Obama is wrong.

McCain IS VERY PANICKED!!!

Gulf War Vets for Obama!
I am so proud America has produced a Barack Obama. He is head and shoulders above McCain/Palin in terms of integrity, intelligence and the right kind of experience. From the worst President in history to the best President in two months!
Bravo Obama for again clearly stating your ideas and stands on issues. What a great point about the privitization of Social Security.

So glad you are pressing women's issues and equality. BRAVO!

"So that my daughters and all our on and daughter could dream a little bigger, reach a little higher.”
- FR, what?

That is a nice McCain contradiction right.  First it's Obama hasn't been in Washington long enough, yet, long enough to create EVERY problem in America.  Sounds more like a 8 year Bush problem to me; a problem it's gonna feel good to be rid of.
I support that message By Senator Obama.
He's not just panicked, he's about to have a "where am I, what am I doing here?" moment.
It is obvious he is...and call him out for it. Point out his insiders and how much lobbying Black and Gramm has done for FNM in between them - in Ads no memos!
McCain is most likely a little panicked since his VP choice is losing steam for his campaign now.  There are so many economic problems that are coming McCain doesn't know where to turn first since he said that this isn't his strong suit.
Obama's speech was right on. Excellent.

He has it so bad over McCain it has gone from comical to very sad.
Obama, you are the man for me to lead this country.
I say: Obama First, the man who works for my country! Thank you Senator Obama for being wise, calm and incredible during this scary economic time. I hope all voters come to their senses and see that McPanic and Palin are the wrong choices for the future of America.
I'm starting to really like that Schultz - she's is truly a strong intelligent women.  Makes me proud to be a woman.

A little panicked?  LOL just a little?  McCain has little or nothing in his bag of tricks left.  Even Caribou Barbie (aka Mini Me) can't save him from a quarter of a century worth of decisions from him that got him (and us) right where we are today.  You mean we are going to ask the guy who brought us the Keating 5, Savings and Loan bailouts and the trusty Resolution Trust Corp to all the sudden have a vision to get us outta the mess his buddies orchestrated?  What's another trillion dollars right?

What a mess we are leaving our children - what happened to our country?  We need leadership not commissions.
Barack,
I think YOU are more than a little panicked.

Whatever happened to your 50 (57?) state strategy.

You're the incredible shrinking man, but then again, a coward always shrinks from duty.

Sayonara!
McCain is responding to the economy which he says the the "fundamentals are strong", (oh, I meant people).  He is pointing fingers anywhere he can. No responsiblity of his; though, he was just relaxing in his rocking chair. I would have more respect for McCain if he could acknowledge that him and his party had a role in this mayhem.

Obama-Biden '08
That's it Barack Obama - John McCain is going down and whenever you have the chance - remind his supporters WHY they better jump ship while the still can.

And yes we would welcome them on the Cruiser ship to change.

I call it - The Barack Obama and Joe Biden Movement Ship of Devine Happiness.

Ok - maybe that was a little much - but you get the point.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Are we not sure that Aliens may have visited our planet, taken McCain and Palin aboard their ship for an evening and performed prefontal lobotomies. Are we really not sure this is what has occurred?
Great article.  McCain's a snake.  I have no faith in the Republican led White House or in anything that Mr. McCain or his "pit bull" Palin says.

Obama/Biden '08
We just came back from hearing Joe Biden speaking on women's issues and he was great. His wife, daughter and daughter-in-laws were there with him, and we had a great crowd. John McCain voted many times to keep the minimum wage lower; he voted for deregulation; he voted against the Violence Against Women Act, and it goes on and on. Why any woman would vote for the McCain/Palin ticket is beyond me. Biden was funny and gracious and it was nice to see him; I had seen Obama earlier this summer when he came to VA. It's great to take part in such a time in our country, and I look forward to going door to door in the coming weeks to help turn Virginia blue!
Panicked?  You could not cut his high panic level with a chainsaw!
McCain a little panicked? Obama, you're the one that's a little panicked. How many "Economic Plans" have you come up with this week? A dozen? Two dozen? First it was you raising taxes, now its you reducing taxes. First it was Bushs fault, then it was McCains fault, then somehow it was Palin's fault. Your friends and sponsors Pelosi and Reid said it wasn't their fault, that Congress should just adjourn and let someone else fix it. At least Bush showed up with a plan, and like good little solidiers, Nancy and Harry signed on right away. Some leadership that is. But you just keep blasting out the negative Barack. You're good at it, we'll give you that. You haven't solved a problem in your life, but you are the smartest guy in the room, so why wouldn't we all listen to you, right?
“John McCain’s talked about privatizing social security,” he said. “Imagine if you had some of your social security money in the stock market right now, how you’d be feeling about the prospects or your retirement. Without social security half of elderly women would be living in poverty. Half. If my opponent had his way millions of Americans would have had their social security tied to stock market this week. Millions would have watched as the market tumbled and their nest egg disappeared before their eyes."

I wonder what position McCain will take on this now.  Since he's changed his position on just about everything else over the past 48 hours, it's only logical to expect him to flip on this too.  Only he'll try and convince us that he was for it all along (and will likely succeed with the gullible GOP base).

Obama/Biden '08!
mccain, mccain, mccain......he is a desparate man. i can not wait to hear the spin on this, obama an insider...please....i think this proves how clueless mccain is on what is going on... i thik obam put it best mcain cares he just does not get it
To those dozen sell out, Uncle Tom, Stepin Fetchit protestors who had the temerity to interrupt President Obama today: Please get on the next ship and return to your home planet. You are not Black, you are not White, you are not even Americans. You fools are Persona Non Grata.
To quote a movie...(Ref: McCain)

"He is interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it."
yes sir, "panicked" is right! your choice of a woman does NOT get you my vote.  I will not be pandered to.  Not this year!  Maybe McCain should next ask Sarah if they can switch roles and he become vp.  If she's as smart as they (the GOP) say she is however, she will not ask him to be her VP.
Has the CEO of Diebold pledged "full support" yet? If so - no panic.
This is the Obama i love.
forget the 4th of nov. can we please vote for Obama now
