McCain appears wrong on Fannie pay

On the campaign trail in Minnesota today, McCain incorrectly suggested that the executive pay that former Fannie Mae CEOs Frank Raines and Jim Johnson earned came from taxpayers.

"That same executive got $21 million of your money," McCain said of Johnson. "And the other CEO, another supporter of Senator Obama, Mr. Raines got $25 million of your money. Let's tell them to give it back. Let's tell them to give it back."

Lucian Bebchuk of Harvard Law School, an expert on corporate governance, confirmed to First Read that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were private companies until being recently taken over by the federal government (which came after Raines' and Johnson's tenures).

Bebchuk said that maybe McCain was referring to past Fannie shareholders in the audience when he asserted that the executive compensation was "your money." Or perhaps McCain was making the point -- very loosely -- that now the federal government has taken over Fannie, any money that Raines or Johnson received is money taxpayers no longer have. But both assertions, he said, would be stretches.

Rich Ferlauto, the director of corporate governance and pension investment at the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees -- a union which has endorsed Obama in the presidential contest -- was more blunt about Raines' and Johnson's compensation

"It was not taxpayer money," he said. "It was shareholder money."

I hope the people seeing thru and astonished by  Senator's McGoo's lies and mispeaks and general "shenanigans'  are the republication voters - these are the American people who need to be informed!
SNL has got to get Jon Lovitz back to play his old "liar guy" role.  He could do McCain.  "uhhhhh, the Fanny Mae guys took your money, yeah that's, they took your money.  They should give it back"

There are so many opportunities for the character to excel that he would be busy for hopefully only the next two months.

Economics never was McCain's strong suit.  Politics is.  But scapegoating a fellow Republican, Bush-chosen former Representative Christopher Cox, is unbecoming if not dishonorable.  We don't need a President, or another one, who flies off the handle in crises and blames someone for woes that all of us -- notably the scapegoater himself -- have brought on.

Since there is such an underlying feeling for some time now that you spin/slant/refigure the news of the moment so Obama comes out as the shinier of the two Knights, I have a proposal, risky as it is. That is, poll your MSNBC offices (keep names private, of  course) and then announce what percentage of your staff supports which candidate. Pretty slick, and privacy is always  maintained. yet, if more than 75% of staff support Obama (probably a given) I would hope a) you would announce that figure and b) adjust your spin and slants accordingly. In other words, be fair. Too much to ask  ?
McCain either knows nothing, or he lies continously. In my view it is both, repeatedly and often.  It doesn't matter which one it proves to be, he is NOT worthy of the presidency.
How many lies is that in one week?  I lost count.

Obama/Biden 08
I hope John McCain supporters realize how much of a liar he has become.  It's so tragic and disheartening that he would resort to such utter lies and distortions.  His campaign should read "Whatever it takes to Win the Election First" not "Country First."  If McCain was so interested in "Country First," he would stop lying and distorting the truth and admit the only thing he cares about is winning this election.  He is the worst kind of politician and his actions are exactly why people are so fed-up with the current state of politics.  Oh, not to mention that he'll say anything to swing votes.  Even if it directly contradicts everything he's said over his 26 year career.  Shame on McShame.
Just saw Another ad on teevee where McCain says that Obama will raise taxes on people making $42,000 a year...Can't we sue him for slander???The lies just keep being repeated over and over again..
send grandpa back to the nursing home - he needs his rest -
hey obama supporters, Jim Johnson was a majar part in his vp vetting process and also gathered lots of democratic funds for his campain to this day. real nice huh?
I thought whining about high pay for CEOs was a communist thing. Now the GOP is borrowing their rhetoric from Stalin?
