Biden: Don't 'fool with my Beretta'

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
CASTLEWOOD, VA – Joe Biden took on an even folksier tone than usual as he campaigned in rural southwest Virginia this afternoon. Though his focus was again on economic issues, he deviated from script to talk about an issue not often discussed by the Democrats: guns.

The Delaware senator predicted that Republicans would seek to sway voters by threatening that Obama would take away guns. Biden, claiming to be a gun-owner himself who likes “that little over and under,” called that notion bogus.

“Barack Obama ain’t taking my shotguns, so don't buy that malarkey,” he said. “If he tries to fool with my Beretta, he's got a problem.”

The riff came as he criticized McCain again for being out of touch on the economy, quoting another Republican as he made the case for putting a new philosophy in the White House.

“Take a look at the facts. Take a look at what’s happened the last eight years,” he said. “Tell me as Ronald Reagan said famously more than two decades ago: are you better off today than you were eight years ago?”

As Obama did earlier today, Biden zeroed in on a quote from McCain in a trade publication saying he’d open up the health insurance market “to more vigorous nationwide competition as we have done over the last decade in banking,” to provide for “more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst-excesses of state-based regulation.”

“Translated: get rid of the regulations, get rid of the protection, and hang on to your health insurance,” Biden said. “Ladies and gentlemen, this guy's not learned anything. I'm not joking.”

Biden spoke to a few hundred friendly bodies at the United Mine Workers Fish Fry, an annual tradition that started decades ago when the union wanted to show solidarity with striking workers. Deep in coal country, Biden said he and Obama would invest money in clean coal technology, and pay for it by taking away tax breaks for oil companies.

“John McCain and Sarah Palin, I understand why they’re oil people,” he said.

And, he continued, he understands the need to drill for more oil, though he expected oil companies to use existing areas first before expanding. “Why haven’t they done that when we’re told there’s 50 billion barrels of oil out there? You think maybe they kind of like the price the way it is?”

“Imagine … what Barack and I can do, taking that four billion dollars and investing it in coal gasification,” he said. “That’s within our capacity to do it. If you give me four billion dollars, I promise you, I promise you, we will find the answer.”

finally someone makes sense. thanks joe
It's smacking us all in the face just how much common sense there is in an Obama/Biden ticket.  These two are the only ones resorting to logic and rationality while the republicans are trying to scare and anger the rest of us by talking about wedge issues in dialectic terms.
I just have one thing to quote:

At the insistence of the McCain campaign, the Oct. 2 debate between the Republican nominee for vice president, Gov. Sarah Palin, and her Democratic rival, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., will have shorter question-and-answer segments than those for the presidential nominees, the advisers said. There will also be much less opportunity for free-wheeling, direct exchanges between the running mates.

McCain advisers said they had been concerned that a loose format could leave Ms. Palin, a relatively inexperienced debater, at a disadvantage and largely on the defensive.

ha...ha...HA...HA, HAHAHAHAHA!

Really?...seriously....an this woman is qualified to do what? Be President if McCain dies? Really?

FYI, I'm a middle-aged white woman and I wouldn't vote for this woman if she came dipped in chocolate.
I received an email from a REPUBLICAN friend, saying that Joe Biden will drop out as VP candidate by Oct 3rd & Barrack will pit Hillary in!!!  Biden will fane an illness.  Has anyone else received this email??
Are we entering a phase of Republican Socialism?  It certainly looks like it.  Would there be a bailout for S.S. recipients?  I think not, but would the public be billed for the reckless performance of Wall Street Hogs?  Bush and Cheney the deregulators are doing some regulating (robbing the poor) for the benefit of the wealthy banks and investment companies.
It'll be a sad day for the U.S. if Obama gets elected... not only will our taxes rise (possibly exponentially), but our rights will be seriously erroded.  In fact, the first right to be hacked away at WILL be the right to protect yourself and your loved ones... otherwise known as the right to keep and bear arms.  Biden is either lying, or he's ignorant of Obama's record.  I'm not crazy about McCain either, but at least I know that he's not going to make me powerless against a dangerous criminal that could break into my home.
Actually, Biden is telling the truth when he says "Barack Obama ain’t taking my shotguns...".  Obama will do his best to make it impossible for the law abiding citizens to keep their guns, but his buddies will get to keep theirs.  As a result, crime will continue to rise and run rampant because law abiding citizens won't have a means to protect themselves from criminals who will continue to aquire & use firearms and any other weapons (legal or illegal) in unlawful ways because they don't recognize or obey laws in the first place.
Sarah Palin is being billed as an "energy expert".  What expertise does she have in the areas of wind power, nuclear power, solar power and most important to those of us in the Pacific Northwest...hydroelectric power???  What are her plans for BPA and our national power grid infrastructure??
now i understand why barack chose joe. when joe speaks, well, there's some 'straight talk express'.
I think the second ammendment is really pretty clear and this should be a non-issue.  The real question gun owners should ask themselves is, "Which candidate/party will be most likely to OBEY the Constitution?"  The party that brought us an unprecedented (and historic) number of Presidential signing statements to subvert the will of one of the other branches of government?  The party that would like to privatize everything-including private security firms like Blackwater?  I don't think we need to worry about the gov't. taking firearms away from people nearly as much as we need to worry about Blackwater employees confiscating guns after a national disaster or something like that!
MCCAIN HAS BEEN DEMONSTRATING  A COMPLETE LACK OF CHARACTER IN THIS CAMPAIGN.  HE WILL LITERALLY SAY AND DO ANYTHING TO WIN THIS ELECTION. HIS LIES, FLIP FLOPS AND RIDICULOUS CLAIMS AND ACCUSATIONS WOULD BE COMICAL IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE IMPORTANCE THAT THIS ELECTION HOLDS FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS COUNTRY. AFTER EIGHT YEARS OF BUSH, A MCCAIN ADMINISTRATION WOULD BE AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER FOR THE USA.
Shoot 'em down JOE!!!
'Clean coal' doesn't sound great either.  The question 'are you better off 8 years ago or today' is the important one.  Obama/Biden should win on this even though many voters over age 45 are racially challenged.
What?  Wait a minute here.  This is all starting to sound like a thing we used to call 'common-sense' back in the day.  Whadda ya know?

Thanks Joe!, for bringing common sense back before it was extinct.

I guess I should also thank Mr. McCain for the Blackberry, upon which I can see all my financial losses from unregulated lenders instantly.
Heck-of-a-job McSamey!
"I do not know how to meet that sort of thing. I don't want to call him a liar, yet, if I come square up to the truth, I do not know what else it is."

Abraham LIncoln, responding to Stephen Douglas' numerous lies during the Lincoln-Douglas debates

Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama need to make a swing through
swing states TOGETHER. Not because the whole is better than either of the separate parts (like McCain/Palin) but because they are so good together.

DUMBING IT DOWN FOR PALIN!
Ha. The NY Times reports that the VP debate format will be much more controlled and structured than the Presidential debates. What a surprise. Kind of like
CELEBRITY JEOPARDY-avid viewers skip some of those because just too dumb. 'What's the capital of California?'
  UNBELIEVABLE.
(Does any of my bloviating ever get through to First Read?  I'm wondering if my laptop and/or my network at work blocks them but I can't tell. I rarely see
anything posted.
Is ANYone listening?  Well, don't blame you)
If conservatives did not see everything either black or white, they might be able to see the light.
Yah, right. Biden was the architect of the Cliton Gun Ban. Now he is trying to convience us he is a gun guy. His voting record here is very clear, and it is definately not pro gun ownership.
I received a large package from the NRA saying Obama would take away all gun rights including Consitutional provisions for citizens to own guns.  Since the NRA is decidedly repubilcan I disregarded the threatening advertising as rubbish and promptly filed it in Basket 13. I woder how many "Stupid" Americans bought the NRA's garbage as gospel?
LOL! Drill, baby, drill...another gimmick! Exxon Mobil has no reason to drill, baby, drill... that would only help the price of oil to fall further. Exxon is making the largest profits in US history, which explains why they won''t drill on the land they already have leased. Exxon Mobil won''t build additional refineries, either. Why would they, that will only help the price of oil to fall further. Instead, Exxon is using its record profits to "buy back its own stock." Exxon promotes itself as an "ENERGY" company; but, they are really only an oil and gas company. If they were truly an "ENERGY" company, they would invest in acquisitions of companies that are researching alternative energies.  Yet, as the bailouts have shown, industry is unable to regulate itself or to make the right decisions.  This is why we need real leadership in government.  We need Obama/Biden 08
In terms of philanthropy, you would think Exxon would be at the top of the list for "giving back" to its communities and stakeholders (which is more than just the "shareholders"); yet, Exxon is stingy!  Compare Exxon's world-wide giving to that of Murphy Oil (google the Eldorado Promise) to see an oil company that understands "philanthropy".  Under Bush/Cheney, Exxon's profits doubled from 1999 to 2000, the moment Bush took office, and, have only sky rocketed since.
It''s really about a difference in philosophy. The republicans have it backwards! They insist on de-regulating business while regulating individual’s bedrooms, women’s uterus’s, as well as all civil liberties. On the other hand, democrats regulate business (so that we don’t have to bail out AIG’s at taxpayer expense…don’t have ENRON’s) while protecting individual civil liberties! Democrats are for CHOICE in all matters; whereas, republicans are for more torture - Abu Ghraib - Guantanamo - killing - Lying - slander - Denial lack of accountability - SPIN baby SPIN! McCain/Failing for more pork barrel pigs in lipstick!
Republicans speak as though the threats posed by global warming and climate change are nonexistent.  Keep in mind that the stone age did not end because of a lack of stones; in like manner, our dependence on fossil fuels will not end because of a shortage of oil.  Leadership is required, such as the leadership demonstrated by Obama.  Furthermore, the space program, from Gemini through Apollo to Neil Armstrong setting foot on the moon, began as a pie in the sky.  Real leadership made it a reality.  Exxon Mobil markets itself as an ENERGY company.  In actuality, they are merely an oil and gas company.  If they truly viewed themselves as an energy company, they would have plowed a much greater profit into acquisition of alternative energy companies.  The alternative technology is more developed and functional than you seem to realize.  However, Exxon used the bulk of its profits to buy back its own stock.  This reflects short term thinking.  Think out of the box, man!  Through a combination of government working together with business, a whole new set of opportunities quickly emerges under an Obama/Biden administration.  A good example of how government, in this case NASA, can work together with industry was the new swimsuits revealed at the Beijing Olympics.  The suits were designed by NASA and Speedo.   OBAMA/BIDEN 08
Barack Obama and Joe biden, are the best and most capable duo to make and re-structure our energy situation in the United States. I am sure that if they get elected, in the next 8 years the American People will be able to see and feel the difference in our pockets.
I can only add: you said it very well, Joe. I don't believe a thing Palin and McCain are saying, I'm not doing better and neither are many of my neighbors, small businesses are shutting down at a record number, there are no new housing starts (and no jobs for builders) except for high end housing in the Cincinnati area. All small builders have stopped work and let go their men. The last eight years has cripled the small business man. I don't believe the Republicans any more. They will milk us dry as they feed money on those who invest overseas. It is time for a change. I'm voting Democrat. If my Cincinnati Republican friends want to call me a liberal, so be it. I want a government and an economy that works.
China is building a new dirty coal plant a week.

If we are able to license or otherwise share our new coal gasification technologies with China, it will cut down significantly on global warming.
Like it takes a whole lotta work to find a conservative or Republican who's speaking the truth about McCain / Palin...
