Former Clinton staffers jump to McCain

Posted: Sunday, September 21, 2008 6:36 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Cherelle Kantey
Former Hillary Clinton campaign staffers charged Obama with being too inexperienced for the presidency, shifting their support to McCain, on a conference call sponsored by the McCain campaign Friday afternoon.

"Obama really doesn't have the experience,” said Miguel Lausell, senior national political advisor to Hillary Clinton. “We don't know what he's going to be doing. We don't really know where he's coming from, and that's the big difference."

Luchy Secaira, former Sen. Hillary Clinton Delegate-at-Large, said that
stance on women’s issues is all talk and no action. Secaira said that Obama’s rhetoric on the Equal Pay Act is not backed up with hiring practices in his Senate office.

"We need to look no further than Sen. Obama's own senate office, where it's been documented that he pays women less on his staff than males on his staff,” said Secaira. “He talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk."

“The Hispanic community has nothing to fear, because they know John McCain,” Secaira added. “He has fought against his own party on behalf of the Hispanic community and was an integral part in trying to bring forth comprehensive immigration reform.”

Lausell also expressed disappointment that Obama overlooked Clinton as a choice for a vice-presidential running mate, saying this decision was a deal breaker for Hispanic voters who wanted to see her on the ticket.

“He didn't even contemplate Hillary Clinton for vice president,” Lausell said. “I don't really think he's committed to women's future and in terms of Hispanics, … he could have picked Bill Richardson who was fully qualified for the job. But you know, he forgot about him also. So you know, I don't think he takes Hispanics seriously.”

While it's true that Clinton had widespread support from the Hispanic community during the primaries, Obama has held substantial leads over McCain with Hispanics -- greater than even what Kerry had over Bush in 2004 or Gore had in 2000.

Nonetheless, Lausell added that he thought Obama’s candidacy would never measure up to Clinton's because of her proven track record on the issues that affect Hispanic-Americans.

"I think that when you talk about Obama and Hillary Clinton, Hillary Clinton is the sky and Obama is the sea. And the sea will never reach the sky, you know,” Lausell said. “I'm sure he means well, but his word doesn't match his action. "

The former campaign operatives also said they were outraged with Obama’s latest Spanish-language ad, “Dos Caras,” which linked McCain to Rush Limbaugh’s offensive remarks about the Hispanic community. Secaira said this type of ad contrasts Obama’s   image of being an agent of change through unification.

"I don't see anything new about put-down politics …This [ad] proves that he's not a uniter; he's a divider. Sen. Obama, along with the Democratic leadership, has divided the party. And this is his tactic. This is his M.O,” said Secaira. “Otro pero con ese hueso."

Translation: “to another dog with that bone."

Of course, political observers will likely see the former Clintons staffers objections as sour grapes -- they're upset because Clinton lost, and they're out of jobs though they're candidate was that close.

sour grapes make sour wine. they have nothing to add to the discussion.  how can they believe there is any semblance between obama/clinton vs. mccain on the issues.

The issues don't seem to matter to these folks.  They don't care about health care, roe v. wade, taxes, education, immigration, and on.  All the issues that should make them vomit McCain's position out of their mouths.  BTW, how many thousands of these folks are there?  Oh, two or three?  And this is news?
So the Clinton staffers would sell out the country and their party for thirty pieces of silver? That is not any change I can vote for. GOD SAVE US ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know what he's going to do???  Has this man been listening to anything in the last year?  Now if he just disagrees with what Obama is going to do then that's fine but to say we don't know, is simply ridiculous.  It seems like what he's really saying is he thinks Obama has been lying all this time and what he says he's going to do is different than what he will do.  If that's the case just man-up and call him a liar for God's sake!

By the way, arrivederci! And don't let the door hit you on the way out!
Jumping onto a sinking ship is generally unwise.
Why is this news?
Good lord. If these are the most articulate staffers Clinton had going for her, no wonder her campaign couldn't pull ahead. Do they really expect us to believe Obama doesn't care about the women's future? I'd point out that he has two young daughters who will inherit the future to which he will contribute as president. (And Obama has never been charged with calling his wife offensive names in public.)
Who are these people? I spend two hours each day reading political news on this site and about six others, and I've never heard of them. Who cares. Staffers need to make money, maybe Obama wouldn't hire them and now they're angry. More importantly, who cares what they think, whoever they are.
Traitors to the issues Hillary stood for.  Palin | McCain do not represent what Hillary's campaign stood for and what the Democratic party stands for.
Why hasn't anyone even brought up the idea that someone who is as committed to her ideals and getting something done as Clinton may prefer a much more powerful position in the cabinet then the VP position, which let's face it, aside from the actual campaign doesn't get much press or action?

I wouldn't doubt that she would be on the cabinet and may have cited a preference of that over VP.

And by this stage in the game, why are we not discussing who the candidates would place in their cabinet positions?
I cannot believe you wasted so much ink on this.
Wow.  This was clearly orchestrated with/by the Clintons.  They really DON'T care about the future of this country - only about themselves.  Scary.

Millions of former Clinton supporters DO support Barack Obama. Why should I care if literally a handful don't? Is this really news at this point? The economy is melting down. We're involved in two wars. John McCain can't seem to recall from moment to moment what he's for or against. And this is what we get from the mainstream media. You're hurting America. Get up off your rear ends and report some news. I suggest issues as a good starting point. Oh, wait. I forget. You're a huge corporation. I guess lipstick it is. Cripes.
It seems to me everything that they accused Obama of being McCain is. The reason Obama is hitting back hard is because McCain started with the negative ads. Funny, when he did not respond people asked "where is he, is he tough enough?" But now that he is hitting back, he is the negative one. McCain is hurting himself with the lying ads that he puts out, so I hope he keeps it up. Do not this man for my President. He needs to retire and go home...if he can remember where all his houses are.......
It's about time that people start growing a backbone and stand up for what's right.  Obama is a used car salesman at best.  He has NO integrity and time after time the media forgives him.  It's Amaricas future on the line.  Wake up America and just say NO to Obama!
God Bless the USA!
yawn...hard to get over the bitterness, I guess.
So two obscure Clinton staffers -- who nobody has ever heard of before -- suddenly pop on a conference call organized by the McCain campaign, and that suddenly big news for First Read?

Every party has its Quislings, but it seems the corporate media whores at GE-NBC only take Democratic ones seriously.

Gee, I wonder why that is.
told you Hillary wants him to lose.  She is sending her team to help Mccain
This is ridiculous. There are two political philosophies in this country. One comes from the Democratic Party and the other from the Republican Party. We've seen the fruit of the Republican ideology over the last 8 years. It's rotten. "Maverick" is just a re-branded version of 2000's "compassionate conservative." McCain is a Republican. He believes in Republican political theory. He would govern as a Republican and if given that opportunity, the woes of the last 8 years will continue. These former Clinton staffers are pathetic.
