Shielding Palin from the press

NEW YORK – The McCain-Palin campaign tried to prevent reporters and television producers from viewing the vice presidential nominee's meetings with world leaders during the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday.

The campaign had planned to allow a “pool” camera and producer -- serving as representatives for all five television networks -- as well as wire and newspaper reporters into of most of Palin's meetings.  But, at the last minute, the campaign informed the press corps that only cameras – without reporters or producers accompanying them – would be permitted.

The five television networks protested, threatening not to shoot video of the meeting at all unless an editorial presence was allowed into the meeting.

The campaign relented, and a CNN pool producer was permitted to view the beginning of Palin's meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the first of the day.

Representatives from wire services and newspapers were not allowed into the Karzai meeting, but will be allowed into subsequent meetings with Columbian President Alvaro Uribe and former secretary of state Henry Kissinger, a campaign aide said.

One aide (possibly from Karzai’s entourage) repeatedly said “No writers” and tried to block the CNN producer from entering the room during the Karzai meeting, according to a pool report, but a senior Palin aide allowed the producer to enter.

Images of Palin with world leaders would likely to help boost her foreign policy credentials, but tough questions from reporters could overshadow the event. Members of the press were in the room for a total of 29 seconds during the Karzai meeting, according to the pool report.

The campaign has cautiously shielded Palin from reporters, allowing just a few interviews and preventing reporters traveling with the campaign from asking questions. She has not held a press conference since being chosen by McCain four weeks ago, and has not done the traditional local interviews when traveling into media markets.

On Sunday, Palin stopped at an Orlando ice cream shop but reporters were not told of the event so an editorial representative was not sent. Several days earlier, press aides were surprised that a pool reporter asked questions about the economic situation during a stop at a deli in Cleveland.

This is truly remarkable....I wonder what our Founding Fathers would think...I bet they are so proud of the trainwreck that has become the GOP...

Freedom of the press, anyone???
This is simply the evening gown portion of the contest. Cannot wait until the Q and A portion, as well as, the swim suit competition.
Good for the Press!  It is time to put an end to this shielding S Palin from questions.  Why the double standard for her?? Straight Talk Express-what a joke!!
And these are the people who want to be elected to the highest office in the world??

They should me reminded that this is not a photo-op contest.
lol, isn't this great, our next possible VP can't answer question from the press ...
As one reporter suggested, Welcome to the "No Talk Express."

Why would anyone vote for a ticket that believes its proper to be so unaccountable to the people?
Don't let that little pit bull off the leash - she'll bite the mailman.
Poor little jornalists. Didn't get their nap apparently.
same team

same tactics
same cover-ups
same wall of silence hiding their ignorance and games

9th year.

you should all stop covering her all together rather than be the same PR outfit that Bush Cheney turned you all into over the last 9 years.
Shielding? Hardly. Keeping the jackels at bay. Absolutely!
If this doesn't confirm that they know she isn't ready on day one-what does???  I have been asking for the last couple of weeks why the press covers her when all you get is a canned speech and a photo op.  MSM--use your leverage:  NO QUESTIONS--NO COVERAGE!
She should talk to Fox and Obamma should talk to MSNBZZZZ simple .This is it partisan reporters giving their slant and trying to get you to think its news when in reality its just as worthless as the guy at the bar who repeats rumours an innuendo
The press continues to be played by Republican politicians while the citizens continue to pay for Republican financial disasters.

I agree that November 4th is a day that will define this country for a long time to come.
This is the biggest scam in presidential election history..Do you think that if Joe Biden refused to talk with the press for 4weeks..that the repugnants
wouldn't cry like the babies they are.
Dear Media - Do your bloody job for a change.  I know that you love a good story about a close race, but you and your children have to live in this world too.  You need to get the word out that this dangerously, comically unqualified woman is striving to be one heartbeat away from the being the leader of the free world.  She wants to be taken seriously as a candidate but SHE CAN'T EVEN FACE REPORTERS!  Why isn't this the lead story every hour on the hour and front page every day?  Enough of this crap; this isn't a game.  It is my life.
Whatever....she is a joke!  McCain is a joke!  These jokes will probably win, because their are too many racists' for Sen. Obama to overcome.

With absolute disrespect Gov. Palin is incompetent, and not that bright.  She uses twenty big words to say nothing.  Even with the softballs Hannity threw at her, she just didn't get it, he led her and she couldn't follow.

Good luck America!
They've got to shield her because she doesn't know anything. If she had so much experience they would let her speak to the media. What a joke. Sorry Republicans, but this is embarassing. Everything she says is garbage.
It is unbelievable that anyone believes this woman is qualified. I blame the news media for not calling this what it is -- a deliberate cover up by the RNC to conceal her inadquacies and push her off on the American people as VP. This woman is not intellectual enough to understand complex American foreign policy! Another George W. Bonehead!

When will this country learn?
Be careful Sarah, don't tread on the liberals press corp. It's all they got left if they'll have any chance to win this thing. And, did Helen Thomas showup? Anyone confuse her with a gargolyle.
Hollow cries that stem from inside this insular bubble merely translates as TAKE EVERYTHING I SAY AT FACE VALUE as they scurrilously eliminate the means for any and all accountability. Tyranny is breeding folks. And more and more people, moderate dems, independents and conservatives alike, with heads emerging from the sand, are speaking out upon what is really evident and at stake.
Why is anyone/everyone surprised that SPVeep is being hidden.  They used to hide my alcoholic uncle.  Corporations hide losses within write-offs.  SPVeep is clearly someone that the McCain campaign staff has now learned to be uncomfortable with.  The real surprise should be when she in unavoidably made available for proper, objective, concise questioning with follow-ups that will not permit simple "speechifying" but will require reflective thought and substantive answers.  Good luck waiting!!!
Why the special treatment? McSame is afraid the truth will come out.  Freedom of the press? McCain is puts Country First, Huh? We have a right to know about the people that supposedly are running for office. Hillary Clinton was not given special treatment.  Remember we are in America, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights.
It is laughable the lengths McCain will go to prevent the world from knowing what a horrible pick this was.  If she can't handle the press she isn't ready to be VP. Its just that simple.
40% of Americans approve of this type of "transparency" from the Palin/McCain ticket?

What is she hiding from? The people she is trying to lead? The truth?
I hope they report this on all the MSM shows, especially the evening network news.  LIV need to hear this and NOW!!!
Which country does Palin represent? She won't talk to common Americans or answer questions from American reporters or commentators and repeatedly lies in her stump speeches. Yet she will talk to and answer questions from foreigners. Just what is this election all about?
It's called "freedom" of the press, and it appears to be working fairly well the last time I looked. It's about time the press start doing their jobs and start asking Govenor Palin the real hard questions.
Why doesn't the press stop taking photos and circulating them if she won't allow any questions, etc.?  By showing the pictures, the media is feeding right into the campaign's hands and, basically, helping their marketing.  That is the same as a bias toward McCain's ticket.
I think the press should rebel and not show any photos. Why should they give her coverage in exchange for 29 seconds? These world leaders must think we are nuts. This Republican is voting for Obama-enough is enough. Hiding from the press, cover-ups, demanding special treatment. Any other frustrated Republicans feeling the same? Right, heaven forfend that Palin should have to display actual knowledge on any subject. She's being protected from scrutiny, and for some bizarre reason I do not understand this is not considered a sign of her weakness as a candidate.

I realize that the Republican true believers think that liberals look down upon and sneer at "down-to-earth" conservatives like Palin. At least in my case, they are partially correct--I DO look down upon her, not for her gender, certainly not for coming from a small town (so do I, originally), and not for being conservative. I think she is a lightweight candidate because she has a lightweight record (filled with serious mistakes) and has expressed no evidence of having a firm grasp on the issues. Every day they protect her from the media simply heightens my certainty that's she's unready to lead this nation we all love.
Are they that afraid to let her answer a question?  Geesh, she can't be that stupid.  In all my years I have never seen anyone run for office but be fearful of answering any questions by the press.
Does anyone actually take this lady seriously?  I hope not.
McCain and the GOP is so scared (and rightly so) the Palin will be exposed as the fraud she is.
I do not understand why there is such an uproar that Gov. Sarah is not taking questions from the press. We all know this election is not about issues.  It is about personalities. You know a beauty contest.  And as you know, Obama , does not have experience in those types of contests.
Sarah is great and shouldn't have to knucle under to democrat party stooges and the press to just answer any stupid question.  She's a mother and a good Christian who is ready on day one.  As governor of Alaska she has to be ready to confront the Russians and has been.  She will say no to all those lobbying people and set the democrat congress on their heads.  It's because Sen. McCain is old that she is the perfect replacement who'll continue the morality President Bush brought to the White House after the likes of Clinton.
Media: Don't you think it is time to start asking Palin some questions? You have the right idea...If you can't talk to her, then don't cover her.  The GOP campaign is a disgrace to the media and the American people.  When in history has a candidate been able to run for office without getting some hard questions.

Americans want to know what she thinks, not what she has been told to say.  We know what McCain is told to say by his Bush/Rove surrogates.

ENOUGH...We either toalk to Palin or take our cameras and reporters and talk to Obama and Biden.  ENOUGH
Lol who cares, we all know that after her apperance at the town hall and on after watching a couple of cable of news interviews. Mrs. Palin is not ready to be on the big stage. I'm sure they will have her well preped by the debate and she will be able to recite Republican talking points with the best of them. She will say blah blah Taxes, blah blah War Win, blah blah Obama not qualified but I'm ready you can ask me anything you want and I won't ansewer it.

Vote Your Hopes Not Your Fears Vote For Obama/Biden 08
They the founding fathers were slave owners and traitors get used to it we are the bastards of freedom. We have made this counrty great we got rid of slavery we gave women rights we worked hard in the streets the leaders of this counrty are not found in the halls of congress or the white house its you and me stand up and say enough is enough to both parties they are using a three card monty on you ,both work for the same devil.DEMOCRACY DEAD CAPITAILISM DEADER
Photo op!!!
Where is the flood or rubble? The only difference between Busk and Palin??? LIPSTICK!! (Maybe not)
New face same old GOP story.
WAKE UP AMERICA!!! The dems need to blow the GOP out to send a message.
ENOUGH!
Why are the rules being changed for Sarah Palin?  Is the GOP afraid she might say something stupid if the press was allowed to ask her questions?  Maybe it's because she doesn't know the first thing about the important issues.  Let the voters see what she's got besides being a soccer mom and a pit bull. (So she says).
This is hilarious.  McSame/Plain want the photo op because it'll help their campaign, but they can't allow anything of substance (or lack thereof) to be reported, because they know that will hurt the campaign.  Could it be more obvious that they realize how weak she is on so many fronts, especially foreign policy?

With all due respect to Rosetta Stone - keep studying, Sarah.  Maybe at some point you'll be able to do more than memorize a stump speech.

Obama/Biden '08
Thank you msm for not allowing the McCain campaign to get away with this. Is this how they plan to run the country?
Obama has been on Fox a number of times.  Palin has been on...oh wait nothing! (dont give me the 2 'setup' interviews, we need unedited talk).  Go back to the Univ. of Idaho or whatever community college you graduated from and get in some more learnin'
She is soooo ready to be vp or even president, but can't answer a question? Why isn't the press protesting louder?
"Several days earlier, press aides were surprised that a pool reporter asked questions about the economic situation during a stop at a deli in Cleveland."

Seriously, they were surprised?  It's the #1 problem in America today and they are surprised she was asked about it?

Sarah Palin is little more than a campaign window dressing at this point.  Apparently, she is such a liability to the campaign that any thought of her answering an unstaged question sends her handlers into mass panic attacks.

Can she even walk and chew gum at the same time, ferchrisakes?!

I will not vote this ticket until I'm comfortable she can handle the job.  Let her speak and answer questions and I will decide. Otherwise kiss my vote goodbye
The media needs to start demanding answers from her and stop acting like paparazzi.
Sarah Palin is NOT a star, she could end up being VP to a man that is in remission from cancer.
This is not a game of cat and mouse.
We need to know more about her than she is photogenic.
Please start doing your job.
No questions, at least not until she becomes President!

But, seriously folks, don't take your eye off the ball; Palin is nothing more than a distraction.   This election is about McCain and Obama.  While her selection speaks volumes about one of McCain's most important decisions to date, we clearly have more pressing issues to consider.
In what respect, Charlie?
