McCain calls for debates to be delayed

Posted: Wednesday, September 24, 2008 2:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Chuck Todd and Domenico Montanaro
McCain called for Friday's first presidential debate to be postponed, according to prepared remarks released by the campaign. The dates for the debates were set more than 10 months ago by the Commission on Presidential Debates, on Nov. 19, 2007.

From a Senior McCain source:
-- McCain called Obama before he made the statement and told him he was going to suspend his campaign and move back to DC until the economic crisis has been figured out.
-- McCain wants to create "a political free zone" until a deal is reached between now and Monday.
--  McCain also spoke with Bush and urged him to get both sides to work together

Video: Sen. John McCain announces he is suspending his presidential campaign and returning to Washington D.C. to work on finance reform, and asks Barack Obama to reschedule their first presidential debate.

The Obama campaign's Bill Burton said in a statement: "At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal. At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama's call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement.  The two campaigns are currently working together on the details."

Here's part of what McCain said, in part:

"Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me. ...

"We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

"I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so."

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports that Obama campaign strategist Robert Gibbs said, Obama initiated contact at 8:30 this morning after discussing it on the flight to Tampa yesterday afternoon and again last night. They discussed a joint statement of shared principles on the bailout package -- to help move it along toward consensus on the Hill.

At 2:35 p.m., McCain called back and mentioned whether they should meet at the White House and delay the debate. Asked whether they should delay the debate, Gibbs said that this is a global financial crisis -- and there would be no better way to shed light this crisis than to debate it.  Gibbs says they have not decided whether or not it would be better to postpone the debate -- but want to talk to the sponsors (the debate commission) first.

NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports, advisors say they are also reaching out to Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe to discuss pulling ads as well. (That can be difficult once they are in station traffic rotations.)

McCain advisors say they will do all the debates but the schedule is up in the air.
They also deny that there is a political calculation in this and say without action the country could slide into a Depression by Monday and added "we'll see 12 percent unemployment" if action is not completed. GOP sources say they believe the current deal is dead on the Hill and reject suggestions that without McCain's vote Democrats would not support a package.

McCain advisors won't speak for Obama's side of the phone call but describe it as a "good conversation." Advisors also say this is not a response to sliding poll numbers and insist this is "an even race."

*** UPDATE 2 *** McCain campaign's Brian Rogers: "Senator Obama phoned Senator McCain at 8:30 am this morning but did not reach him. The topic of Senator Obama’s call to Senator McCain was never discussed. Senator McCain was meeting with economic advisers and talking to leaders in Congress throughout the day prior to calling Senator Obama. At 2:30 pm, Senator McCain phoned Senator Obama and expressed deep concern that the plan on the table would not pass as it currently stands. He asked Senator Obama to join him in returning to Washington to lead a bipartisan effort to solve this problem."

*** UPDATE 3 *** More on McCain's "suspension"/delay debate stance, from traveling pool report:

McCain Senior Adviser Mark Salter briefed reporters just now off camera on the decision. He told us the following:
--McCain will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending obama agreement
--McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan. He would not characterize Bush reax.
--McCain talked to colleagues on the Hill during last 2 days and learned that passage of the Paulson plan was going to be next to impossible
--McCain would partake in debate if they passed agreement by Friday morning
--Salter will get back to us on whther mccain is suspending fundraising
--Salter says they are confident if all parties get together--they can agree on a plan by Monday.

John McCain wants to be president but he can't multi-task?  What a joke!
We have a financial crisis at home and we're fighting two wars abroad.  If he wants to be president how can we trust him to handle the situations?

John McCain thinks he can be president but he can't multi-task?  Give it up man.

Obama camp:
At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement...
McCain camp:
I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me. ...

Is it just me, or does it sound like even in this moment of "bipartisan cooperation" both campaigns are trying to get credit for reaching out first?
Sounds like McCain got cold feet!!
have this man lost his mind?????????????????????????????
I think that this is as much of a political ploy as anything that John McCain has done thus far.

And Barry's Camp responds that there is no reason to stop the campaign or the debate.
Politics as usual.
Who's he going to debate? Himself?
Pack up the tele-prompter and get ready to pontificate.

Thinking Barry doesn't want an investigation into the bailout- since him and his advisors are up to their eyeballs in the Freddie/Fannie scandal.
These people should be made to pay the money back, be investigated and face criminal charges.
Oh no- Obama wants to distance himself from the economic mess.
Last place he wants to be is back in the Senate to face the music.
Somebody needs a bit more time to do his homework. Please, Senator McCain. No one is buying this.
Nice try Senator McCain, but a two hour debate is not gonna stop you from doing the exact same thing.

You just don't want to answer any questions.

This is complete and total BS.

John McCain doesn't know anything about the economy, so what help is he going to provide?

Here's hoping the media doesn't fall for this eleventh hour ploy by a desperate man.
McCain is a manipulative politician.  He hasn't been present for a vote for about a year and a half, but now wants to return to Washington after he's been a major player in creating the mess that we are in.

He'll do anything to distract from the fact that he would be a disasterous leader.  I hope Obama calls his bluff and insists that the debate go on as scheduled.

McCain is such a loser.
"Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative." McCain can skip this event and prepare for the debate if he's having trouble doing two important things at once. WHAT A FREAKING LOSER!
He's losing, and he doesn't want to debate Obama. That's the bottom line. McCain's missed more votes in the Senate than any other senator...now he's suddenly concerned.

If he is concerned about anything, it's his own bottom line and that of his obscenely wealthy cronies.

He doesn't give a rat's backside about the middle class.
McCain couldn't win a debate, so he decided to ask for everyone to forget about it until after the biggest issue he faced was gone. Convenient.
John McCain changed his mind on the upcoming debates - because Joe Biden just killed all of his talking points.

If he has that debate this Friday - Barack Obama will smashed him like a straved cockroach.

John McCain is cooked - done - finished.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
McCain is getting desperate. There are more than enough people working on the economy.  Obama should suggest that they send Biden & Palin to Washington as surrogates and go ahead with the debate.
I have to give the McC ppl credit for this latest campaign suspension move. If Obama says no, hes putting politics ahead of the country. If he agrees w McCain, hes a follower to Mcs’ leadership. Slipping badly in the polls, McCain has now put Obama in a box. His move…
What is wrong with Grampy?  Haven't studied the list of LIES yet?  Come on, it is going to be alot harder than this in the White house!
IT is the 3am in the morning call and grandpa just turned over and went back to sleep!
Wow!  This is a totally political move and the American people will see it that way.  In the face of a growing deficit in his poll numbers, he is desperately trying to change the subject.  What exactly is it that John McCain is going to do in Washington on Thursday and Friday that he hasn't had the chance to do in his last 30 years in the Senate?  Maybe we should postpone the November election until the financial crisis has improved?  Or better yet, let's vote today and get the country started in a new direction.
Hey Obama...

Can you say Checkmate?

I know. Let’s simply SWAP and do the VP debate on Friday!!!!!

Biden was born ready.
So McCain is trying to steal Obama's spotlight as his own idea, because he didn't think of it first?  Or is it that he just learned that Obama was actually preparing for the debate and it never occured to McCain that this was something he should too...and now he's scared?  Obama's been working on the economy and campaign at the same time, why can't McCain.  After all, the debate IS RELEVANT to what we can expect in an economy come January!!  Helloooo....
This is in part a desire to get Palin up to speed and McCain is trying to score political points!  This is a bunch of crap...and I would hope the Obama campaign would say no!
EVERYONE IMMEDIATELY CALL YOUR LOCAL NEWS PAPERS, RADIO STATIONS, TELEVISION STATIONS DEMANDING THAT THE DEBATES GO ON AS PLANNED FOR THIS FRIDAY. THERE IS NO NEED TO DELAY THE DEBATE. THIS IS A "STALL" TACTIC BY THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN. WE DO NOT BUY IT !
I wish he would just go ahead and  suspend his campaign for good. Sounds like Rovian  tactics to regroup and divert attention from the negatives associated with his campaign as of late, especially since Obama has jumped out in the lead this week. He is trying to stop the momentum and unfortunately, appears to have backed Obama into a corner on this one. Once again, Gop proves that they are the best chess players in the world.
McCain to back out of Friday's Debate!

What a cop-out! Today brought news McCain has fallen behind Obama in a number of polls and categories. He's not ready to debate Obama because he's sinking like a rock and needs help!

The "straight talker" is really a "no talker"

Obama should demand that McCain honor his agreement. The debate can not only shed light on foreign policy but can be also used to discuss the current financial debacle. And a few hours out of McCain's day is not going to alter the outcome of the financial debacle . . . unless of course he's missing his nap time.

What a joke!

Down with McCain!
What a joke. Seriously, maybe McCain should take over one of the late-night talk shows, or do stand-up, or anything but run for President. Clearly, he's not up to the campaign, and he's not up to the job.
Alec Martin - R u an idiot? Did you not read any papers this morning to see how the McCain is obviously running scared because Rick Davis is in bed with Fannie & Freddie!
So McCain saw he was taking a whooping hit in he polls as a result of these economics issues and decides to suspend his campaign for the good of the country. he is also having his people work closely with Obama's people to come up with solutions tothe current crises.

Buy all the BS above if you like but the fact is McCain saw the handwriting on the wall that he was kicking his ass kicked. He didn't want to go into a debate and be questioned about his comment that our economy is fundamentally strong. He wants the issue resolved using Obama's people and their ideas, then will return to the campaign changing away fro mthe economy and back to personalities.
Considering all the negative stories about McCain and his Rick Davis' association with Freddie and Fannie, I can see why McCain would want to up his economic cred with a "big" move like this.  It will divert attention from his current troubles.

I don't think I want either of them in the middle of this.  Their agendas could be questioned.  Are they there to score political points or are they there to really help?

While this bailout deal is important, sending both presidential candidates into the fray would create a distraction to those there that are trying to solve this as quickly as possible.  I think both candidates would be wise to let their colleagues work this out without the distraction and media frenzy both of them in Washington would create.  Besides, the election will still happen on Nov. 4th.  The public deserves to see these debates.  If anything, they should change the topic of Friday's debate to the Economy and Domestic Issues.
WOW....this dog simply doesn't hunt. How much does McCain think he and Obama can accomplish in the 1 night that they would be in Mississippi...something smells fishy..and I think the new polls have something to do with it...perhaps NBC's polls will show ABC's *not* to be an outlier, like McCain's group originally accused...hmmmm
Life Goes on, dude.

This is a very lame political ploy by the
Mccain camp.

Stand up and answer the questions!
The headline is all wrong on this story.  It should be After Obama calls for bi-partisan no politic zone McCain decides to take credit for the idea.

McCain never would have done this on his own and after claiming he's the one that reaches across the isle he can't let Obama be seen as the Leader with Strength, Judgement and Unity.
Mccain the "hero" is obviously running away from the debate because he knows he is going to take a whoopin, what a lying loser.
We do not need a delay to the debate or hence possibly the election because John McCain is afraid to stand side by side with Barack Obama.  McCain is the one who is always chiding Barack Obama to do as he says (Isn't that what our parents always said, do as I say, not what I do).  Republicans tactic is the same, FEAR, FEAR, FEAR.  Do as I say or we're all gonna die.  Oh, and it's really all the fault of the Democratic party, if you listen to the Republicans.  Let's get this election over and change can really come to America.
Mccain the "hero" is obviously running away from the debate because he knows he is going to take a whoopin, what a lying loser.
How about Obama mentioning that he actually showed up for key votes over the summer that matter to the American people, while McCain chose to spend the extra time on the campaign trail
Another hail mary toss from a candidate who makes too many knee jerk decisions. Where was the outcry for this? Guess what John, there are others working on this and you're not the president. Besides, what you know about the economy will fit into your hearing aid.

Obama needs to call the old fool on this one.
It's too bad he can't rely on Ms Palin at this time.  A functional team is usually able to divide the tasks at hand and get them ALL handled.  This is a striking measure of McCain's inability to lead.
mccant is running scared of course he doesn't want a debate, his campaign is falling apart.  this so called crises is due mostly to rethugnutz deregulation and no oversight.   hard working americans should be bailed out NOT uber rich right wing elitist.
Amazing.....yesterday Obama was asked if he would return to Washington for the vote and he replied if it was to be a close vote and his vote was necessary, indeed he would return to Washington.  McCain was asked the same question and could not respond with an affirmative or negative? Instead he muttered some non intelligible response.  This appears to be a hard drive on McCains part to show some type of leadership (of which we know he is devoid) or it is substantiating what we also already know.....he is unable to multi-task!
no... No... NO... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... we don't want a debate... we NEED a debate.
Also... how convenient for McCain
ill prepared for the debate perhaps?  What is he going to do- ride in on a white horse, or rather drive up in his foregin made car with Pathetic Palin and save the day?  He'd be better off just calling his campaign off permantely- what a joke and loser McCain is.  Disgusting- he's had 10 days to delay it- he's tired, and I'm tired of looking at him.
So, if he is President and 2 major balls are in the air, of equal importance; does that mean he will drop one!  Being President of anything means you have to juggle/multi-task...
This is a sick joke from a sick old man right? if the geezer feels he can't walk and chew at the same time perhaps he needs to really suspend his campaign...

Obama should not fall for this because mccains and his staff will sure still be campaigning and lying
What a ploy, does he think he is so important that his presence is needed all of a sudden. He hasn't been in DC all year, he is only one man why should this make a difference? He is starting to lag behind in the polls and is afraid of what is going to happen in the debate tomorrow.

Thinking this will make him look good all of a sudden with the voters and gain him some points in the polls.

Sure hope people are not that gullible.
hahaha this elections season is getting all the more interesting. Don't be surprised if McCain asks that the elections be postponed till next year so that we can address other issues facing this country. Haha
McCain is a coward.
Here's an idea. Just make it a debate about THE ECONOMY. These guys should be able to think on their feet if they're worthy of being President and us voting for them.  Give us your ideas out of this bright mess the Bush Administration and GOP allowed.
Why?  Because he thinks he can garner an economic plan before Obama?  What a joke - the guy is an arrogant, out of touch liar.  He's just as corrupt as the institutions he pretents to put on a higher standard now.  It wasn't the case when he was making money with the Keating 5 dealings - but then again John McCain has flip-flopped several times along the way, first deregulation, now regulation, repenting for his misdeads (at the expense of others) and making things alright with himself for the almighty vote.  What a classy guy!  ENOUGH.

Obama/Biden '08
Well, the campaign hasn't been going that well for Sen. McCain lately, why not take a little break?  He certainly has nothing to lose--and he was provided a great excuse.
