McCain calls for debates to be delayed

Posted: Wednesday, September 24, 2008 2:58 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Chuck Todd and Domenico Montanaro
McCain called for Friday's first presidential debate to be postponed, according to prepared remarks released by the campaign. The dates for the debates were set more than 10 months ago by the Commission on Presidential Debates, on Nov. 19, 2007.

From a Senior McCain source:
-- McCain called Obama before he made the statement and told him he was going to suspend his campaign and move back to DC until the economic crisis has been figured out.
-- McCain wants to create "a political free zone" until a deal is reached between now and Monday.
--  McCain also spoke with Bush and urged him to get both sides to work together

Video: Sen. John McCain announces he is suspending his presidential campaign and returning to Washington D.C. to work on finance reform, and asks Barack Obama to reschedule their first presidential debate.

The Obama campaign's Bill Burton said in a statement: "At 8:30 this morning, Senator Obama called Senator McCain to ask him if he would join in issuing a joint statement outlining their shared principles and conditions for the Treasury proposal and urging Congress and the White House to act in a bipartisan manner to pass such a proposal. At 2:30 this afternoon, Senator McCain returned Senator Obama's call and agreed to join him in issuing such a statement.  The two campaigns are currently working together on the details."

Here's part of what McCain said, in part:

"Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me. ...

"We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved. I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.

"I am confident that before the markets open on Monday we can achieve consensus on legislation that will stabilize our financial markets, protect taxpayers and homeowners, and earn the confidence of the American people. All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so."

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports that Obama campaign strategist Robert Gibbs said, Obama initiated contact at 8:30 this morning after discussing it on the flight to Tampa yesterday afternoon and again last night. They discussed a joint statement of shared principles on the bailout package -- to help move it along toward consensus on the Hill.

At 2:35 p.m., McCain called back and mentioned whether they should meet at the White House and delay the debate. Asked whether they should delay the debate, Gibbs said that this is a global financial crisis -- and there would be no better way to shed light this crisis than to debate it.  Gibbs says they have not decided whether or not it would be better to postpone the debate -- but want to talk to the sponsors (the debate commission) first.

NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports, advisors say they are also reaching out to Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe to discuss pulling ads as well. (That can be difficult once they are in station traffic rotations.)

McCain advisors say they will do all the debates but the schedule is up in the air.
They also deny that there is a political calculation in this and say without action the country could slide into a Depression by Monday and added "we'll see 12 percent unemployment" if action is not completed. GOP sources say they believe the current deal is dead on the Hill and reject suggestions that without McCain's vote Democrats would not support a package.

McCain advisors won't speak for Obama's side of the phone call but describe it as a "good conversation." Advisors also say this is not a response to sliding poll numbers and insist this is "an even race."

*** UPDATE 2 *** McCain campaign's Brian Rogers: "Senator Obama phoned Senator McCain at 8:30 am this morning but did not reach him. The topic of Senator Obama’s call to Senator McCain was never discussed. Senator McCain was meeting with economic advisers and talking to leaders in Congress throughout the day prior to calling Senator Obama. At 2:30 pm, Senator McCain phoned Senator Obama and expressed deep concern that the plan on the table would not pass as it currently stands. He asked Senator Obama to join him in returning to Washington to lead a bipartisan effort to solve this problem."

*** UPDATE 3 *** More on McCain's "suspension"/delay debate stance, from traveling pool report:

McCain Senior Adviser Mark Salter briefed reporters just now off camera on the decision. He told us the following:
--McCain will suspend airing all ads and all campaign events pending obama agreement
--McCain called President Bush today and told him of the plan. He would not characterize Bush reax.
--McCain talked to colleagues on the Hill during last 2 days and learned that passage of the Paulson plan was going to be next to impossible
--McCain would partake in debate if they passed agreement by Friday morning
--Salter will get back to us on whther mccain is suspending fundraising
--Salter says they are confident if all parties get together--they can agree on a plan by Monday.

Sen Byrd and all the other old guys are going to be so happy to see John back at the nursing home where he belongs.
Switch the debates - have the VP on Friday night.

Biden's ready.

Sarah???
Wasn't it McCain who said he wanted a Town Hall every week?  Didn't he tell THE VIEW two weeks ago that the reason he runs dirty ads against Obama is because Obama won't debate him?  Well you have a debate, but now you want to suspend campaigning because your poll numbers are free-falling and you can't find your voice on the economy and the facts don't support your foreign policy?

If I was Senator Obama, I'd respectfully decline his request and tell the American People that Senator McCain wants to delay the debate so he can finish the one he's having with himself based on all of the new positions he's taken on since he started running for President.

PLEASE SENATOR OBAMA!  You have the momentum.  Please DO NOT let him off the hook this easily!  It's like when Hillary wanted a debate a week during the primaries after she fell behind.
McCain must be reading the latest polls. This feels to me like politics of fear....and a trick.
I am still not sure what the end result of the bailout will be but I do not believe having the debates suspended and the two candidates in DC Friday night will alone solve the issue. We need more information from the people involved not someone who up until last week thought the ecomomy was strong.
Let us not forget this is a foreign policy debate and there are still many foreign policy issues that we need to hear from the candidates on. Iraq? Iran? Afganistan? Pakistan? Spain? (the one in Europe, not Latin America).
Is McCain afraid to debate Obama or is it that he can't multi-task.
My question is - what difference is 24 hours going to make?  Instead of suspending his campaign on Friday morning - do it Saturday morning after the debate.  I think the public WANTS to hear this debate.  They need more information not less!!!
And McCain thought LAST WEEK was bad for him...

Now THIS.

Nobody's buying into your bullcrap, McCain.  But keep trying if you'd like.  If nothing else, we're getting plenty of laughs out of it.
Trying to be fair, I mulled over whether or not this was a legit attempt to problem solve by McCain.  I'm sorry to say that I just don't buy it.  In his first, most important presidential decision, he chose Palin as his running mate -- a nakedly political pick, NOT a responsible governance pick.  McCain has lost my trust.  I don't believe him.  He's trying to dodge the debate...
Tsh, tsh, tsh, somethings fishy here big time.  I don't buy it for one minute.  Why today, why now, 2 days before the 1st debate?  Why not after the debate? McCain knows Friday's debate will be a 100% total disaster and he is trying to postpone his doom...  OBAMA don't buy what McCain is selling..  November 4 can't come quick enough.

GO OBAMA....
Alec Martin (Sent Wednesday, September 24, 2008 3:20 PM)

What? You don't even make sense Alec. Was it not McCain who should beworrying because of his record of de-regulation and his Campaign Manager's ties to Freddie and Frannie to the tune of 15,000 per month up to last month? I think you have your stories backwards.
Since John McCain has not even ventured into the Senate since April of this year, I find it hard to believe that he is acting out of any real concern for our nation.  More likely, his campaign is imploding and he saw an opportunity to call "Time-out".

I have to agree with Rahm Emmanuel, who was just on MSNBC saying "We can do both".  Here's a few ideas for a compromise:  Why not flip the debate topics and discuss the ECONOMY on Friday night?  OR, have Biden and Palin debate Friday, instead of Obama-McCain.  Either option would certainly serve the American people.

This really seems transparent to me.  McCain is falling way behind and want to "act" presidential.  Nice try.  Kinda desperate.  The problem needs to be solved, but why not still debate?  Just because times get tough McCain's calling for a time out?
Hmmmm....I'm glad that both want to  figure out a solution, but I do smell some campaigning in this move as well.  Neither of them can help it.
This is another McCain Publicity Stunt (the last one was picking Palin)
Can someone please explain to me that if McCain and Palin are always "ready" why does he want to postpone the debate on Friday.  What better way to prove you can step up in the midst of chaos, and still carry on.  Yes this is a crisis, but it is not a hurricane. The economic crisis is even MORE of a reason to continue the debate.  If you ask me, I think it is because MCCain and Palin are not ready.  McCain doesn't want to go on record and give specifics on the economy and the changes that are needed.  Not that something needs to be done, but how he intends on doing it.  I think he doesn't want to commit, and he wants us to forget about Sarah's flubs, in the last day or so.
Well first, Mississippi folks writing into Fox News are ticked. More importantly, we've had wars and depressions during election seasons before...what makes this so special that they can't take two hours out on a Friday night - when Congress is supposed to be adjourned for the year already - to have a debate? So change the debate back to the domestic policy one, but the American people want to hear from these guys, and the majority of them don't watch C-SPAN 2 to see the Senate.
In an era of cell phones, wireless internet, email, and IM, he can't "work on the economy" while he's on the campaign trail?  And why not simply change the topic of the debate Friday evening and have a real debate between these two candidates on the economy?

Jeez.  This may be the motherlode of all campaign stunts!
McDunce is so out of touch he just can't understand why this is bowing up in his face.  Lock stock and still goose stepping to the dunce in chief.  Anyone still want to take a wager that the dunce in chief will be listed as the worst in US history as the most failed?
Hogwash! This is a sleazy political tactic and reeks of Karl Rove. So essentially, if Barack Obama says yes he looks as though he's caved to McCain's demands, and if he says no, then he looks like he's more interested in becoming the next president. It's political trickery and subject to backfire.
All I can say is WHAO!

If McCain even comes close to winning this election, I think we can say bye bye to what is left of America.

McCain is a total joke
McCain has now officially turned his campaign into a three ring circus.  This is clearly a desperate move to take the country's focus off his struggling campaign in the hopes that people will view him as a leader.  Where was his leadership when his party was de-regulating the financial sector?  Unbelievable....
And another thing....

How can a Senator fix the economic situation? He is not even on any of the ranking committes invloved in the hearings. He is not President yet either, nor is any of his "Economic Advisors" even in either the House or the Senate. This is GRANDSTANDING and when I said before Checkmate, I cleared my head and was a little more pragmatic about this.

This is actually more of a Texas Hold Em' Bluff.

Call it Barry. Go ALL IN!
Whenever McCain is cornered he resorts to GIMMICKRY

Why postpone the debate?
The debates must proceed as scheduled.
If McCain was so convinced about this shouldn't he have stopped campaigning on Monday and attended the hearings?
McCain wants to create "a political free zone" until a deal is reached between now and Monday.
=====================
Does that mean he's suspending his lying TV ads too? That would be a welcome relief. But it's typical McCain's statement didn't mention that Obama called him first. Makes him sound like he's in charge (heaven forbid!). The more panicked McCain becomes, the more he's into grandstanding. After all his talk about how he wanted Obama to do weekly town halls with him, is he now so afraid of meeting him face-to-face?
He can go on Letterman Thursday, but there's no time for a Presidential Debate Friday? What a coward.
I see that McSame is RUNNING SCARED. I bet if his poll numbers were up he would not be trying to put the media spotlight on HIMSELF.

What a joke. He needs to suspend his campaign.

I do not trust him AND he is a liar and has showed me that it is NOT really putting COUNTRY FIRST!!!!!

ALL of this on the REPUBLICAN watch. Hmmn!!!!!!

Alec Martain- you are just as out of touch on issues as McCain is- sick party you have.
McCrafty is trying to run out the calendar.  He is afraid of a mistake in the debates, and is grasping this economic crisis as a lifeline to avoid the debate.  No one is fooled by this nonsense of suspending campaigning with 41 days to go.  Get real.  A President must be able to handle all of the problems on his desk without equivocation and simultaneously.  Obviously, McChicken is not willing or able to do that.  To Barack Obama, tell McCoward to show up and face the music.  The time is now!!!
From "the fundamentals are sound" to cut and run in 10 days!
SHAME ON YOU SEN JOHN MCCAIN!!!  The American people know what you're up to!  Two months ago I was a solid Repub voter; this will be my first vote in 30 years for a Dem.
You folks have big mouths ! , and it sounds like you are in love with Obama. Saying that McCain is a loser and that he doesn't care about the middle class is a bald faced LIE! McCain could clean Obama's clock!
PATHETIC!!! Palin won't talk to the press and McCain won't debate. Wake up people!!! They're trying as hard as they can to keep the fact that they're both clueless out of the media! And you know if Obama says he wants to go ahead with the debates, McCain will say Barack doesn't understand or care about the severity of our financial crisis. So predictable...
John McCain is revealing himself to be the immoral coward he has always been. Too bad most people bought his BS as some sort of knight in shining armor. An "honorable man" with a penchant for crashing airplanes, and getting daddy to bail him out. An "honorable man" who cheats on his handicapped wife with a rich Barbie. An "honorable man" who sells out his political office to the highest bidders; not once as with the Keating Five, but now again with Freddie Mac. Head for the hills Johnny!
What do you know we see McCain under fire and he can not handel more than two items on his plate. What a joke, the debate needs to go on.
Biden and Palin Friday instead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just a guy,

I agree!! but i also think the debates should go on. Somehow, i don't see McCain skipping a fund raising event to be in Washington.
1. This is a 90-min debate on an issue that candidates are supposed to be well versed on anyways. How much time is it going to take up unless you were planning to study for it and run out of time for the last minute. McCain should have acted like a good student and prepared well in advance and showed up to take the 90-minute exam instead of waiting till the last minute to prepare and then citing an "unforeseeable circumstance" to get out of it. Sounds like a bad student to me.
2. And whatever happened to the guy who wanted to do multiple town halls. Now he wants to skip even the one scheduled meeting? As far as I can see, this is McCain thinking that his best shot at a bounce, the foreign policy debate that Friday is supposed to be able, would be lost in the news about the economy. So he wants to wait until the economy is in the background in order to make news about his foreign policy expertise. Obama camp say NO.
Congress has been doing just fine without them for the past few months. It can spare them for 90 minutes. Face the world McCain. Whats with all the fear these days?
Media PLEASE don't fall for this second stunt. Palin was the first. This is sooo transparent. His campaign is tanking and he's trying to stop the free fall. He's a coward.
