First thoughts: Let's debate (or not)

OXFORD, Miss. -- Is it really debate day? Only John McCain knows, but last night he and his campaign sounded like they were going to find their way here before 9:00 pm ET. So assuming McCain does show up, what should we expect? Will there be a record-breaking audience that watches tonight? We have our doubts; after all, it’s high school football night, especially for states like Florida, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. As for the candidates, who's the favorite? The format sets up nicely for Obama (no real time limits and they'll be at podiums). And the subject matter (foreign policy) sets up well for McCain. Neither had stellar debate performances in the primaries, and they split their two sit-down forums, with McCain winning the more significant one: Saddleback. The trick for both candidates isn't performing well. Instead, it's avoiding some of their own bad habits. Obama can't let himself slip into condescending or smart-aleck mode and appear too passive (see: today's New York Times), and McCain can't have those awkward smiles slip in during a serious point (see: "hell, gates of"). Since McCain is behind ever so slightly right now, the burden is on him to start of well tonight. But given the chaotic events of the week, he does have a built-in excuse if he doesn't perform up to par -- he wasn't focused on the debate as much as Obama. Then again, is that a good excuse, especially when it was his decision to direct his focus elsewhere? Here’s one reason why so many folks are convinced McCain will show up: Does he really want to wake up on Monday morning having been a party both to Washington's inability to get a deal done and be perceived as he ducked a debate?

*** Losing the spin war: Speaking of, McCain's losing the spin war on the bailout plan for a couple of reasons. One, he's not just up against a fairly united Democratic Congress and Obama -- but also the White House and Hank Paulson. And Senate Republicans appear to be on board as well; GOP Sen. Lamar Alexander told CNBC’s John Harwood that as many of 40 out of the 49 Republicans in that chamber could support the bailout. It's only McCain and the House Republicans who are now opposing this. Last night, the McCain campaign sent a memo to reporters, saying: "At this moment, the plan that has been put forth by the Administration does not enjoy the confidence of the American people as it will not protect that taxpayers and will sacrifice Main Street in favor of Wall Street. The bottom line is that as of tonight, there are not enough Republican or Democrat votes for the current plan. However, we are still optimistic that a bipartisan solution will be found.” But by injecting himself into the bailout negotiations, McCain has forced himself into this either-or situation: convince House Republicans to back the plan, or come up with a plan of his own. If he can't do either, then why did he come to Washington? And what happens if the market collapses today? Does McCain own a market collapse?

*** Whose bright idea was this? NBC’s John Yang makes this other point: "Besides being a big stakeholder in Washington Mutual, the person I'd least like to be this morning is the Bush aide who told the president it was a good idea to adopt McCain's idea to call the congressional leaders and the two presidential nominees to the White House. (I can still hear him roaring to an aide during the 2000 primary campaign: "Whose brilliant idea was this?!?") By all accounts, what White House officials intended to be a meeting to bring everyone together, get them on the same page, propel them to a final deal -- and, McCain likely hoped, make the Republican nominee look like the hero -- turned into a politically charged session of finger-pointing and bitter recriminations." Also, it was just announced that Bush will make a statement on the financial crisis at 9:35 am ET.

*** Palin’s bad week gets worse: What has happened to the Sarah Palin who stepped onto the national stage with her well-received convention speech three weeks ago? That person is now a shell of her former self. Had it not been for McCain's debate gambit, Palin's near-disastrous two-part interview with Katie Couric would be dominating the political discussion right now. On Wednesday, she was unable to cite an example of McCain being in favor of more oversight outside the one Couric provided (“I'll try to find you some and I'll bring them to you,” she finally replied). And yesterday, she provided an interview clip heard ‘round the world. Was this a Roger Mudd moment? The news has only gotten worse for Palin, with the Washington Post reporting that she accepted $25,000 in gifts as Alaska governor, which brings into question her credentials as a reformer. Is there now a new meaning to the ”Palin Effect”? At this point, it really depends on how she performs at next week’s debate. If there is an upside to the Palin performance this week, she has moved her debate expectations to an all-time low.

*** The debate skinny: The first presidential debate between McCain and Obama -- if it takes place -- is scheduled to begin at 9:00 pm ET here at the University of Mississippi. The topic of the 90-minute debate is foreign policy, although moderator Jim Lehrer of PBS has suggested that he will ask questions about the economy and the Wall Street crisis. There will be two-minute answers, followed by a five-minute discussion for each question.

*** Talk about shaking things up: Oregon State beating USC last night is the equivalent of Obama carrying Mississippi or McCain carrying Massachusetts. It's not impossible, and we can explain it away if it somehow happened. But it sure is improbable.

*** On the trail: Biden (along with his wife) attends a firehouse fish fry in Cudahy, WI. Palin hits a debate-watching party in Philadelphia, PA.

YES.  Please debate!

I've already got my snacks laid out...

http://thepajamapundit.com/
here's a thought for you, imagine PALIN meeting STALIN.  scary thought, huh?  just more proof that putting the republicans in office is a TERRIBLE idea.  please make the right choice and vote for obama.
I do not plan on watching the debate tonight. Why? Supersticious.  I didn't watch the 1992 and 1996 debates, and my candidate won.  I watched only half the debated in 2000, and my candidate won the popular vote, but lost the deciding electoral college.  I watched all of the 2004 debates, while my candidate won the debates, he lost the election.  So, I will revert to my 1990's strategy...and, in any event, I am just too nervous.  I would prefer to hear about McCain's gaffes, then risk watching Obama make a stupid mistake.
Ever notice the resemblance between Glen Quagmire and John McCain?

Why does McCain all of a sudden have a bad twitch in his left eye?

Can we start a joke of the day for Ms Airhead Sarah?

If I have seen her on television, can I become a TV analyst?

What would happen if McCain ‘blows a gasket’ and cannot continue on?  Does airhead automatically move up?

Obama could try to settle the bailout issue, but that would require him to actually do something. You know, he'd have to come up with an idea, sell it to congress and the people, work out differences and make compromises. But Barack is more about rhetoric, a story, a message, and big glorified speeches. Getting his hands dirty on an issue like the bailout is not Barack's cup-of-tea.
Wow!  Obama must be ahead by 20 points then with how bad this week has been.
Could it be that McCain wants to prevent an agreement in Congress so that he can maintain an excuse to avoid the debate?

Will he feel he is too much exposed to continue to avoid the debate?
Sometimes you just want to scream at the incompetence of some people in responsible positions.

I once told [GM] Roland Hemond to go out and get me a big name pitcher. He said, 'Dave Wehrmeister's got 11 letters. Is that a big enough name for you ?'"
First Read: Palin's near-disastrous two-part interview with Katie Couric would be dominating the political discussion right now.

Women (and men) hating women posts to start in three, two, one . . . .
"And the subject matter (foreign policy) sets up well for McCain."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
In what regards, Charlie?

John McCain has been WRONG about Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Georgia, and now SPAIN!

He wants to BOMB Iran and selected a VP who doesn't speak in complete sentences.

And oh yeah, one other thing - JOHN McCAIN is a LIAR. Hard to build diplomacy when everyone in the world knows you will LIE to get your way.

Please explain how foreign policy is his strength. Oh, yeah. You can't.
FROM A SOLDIER!

What is going on!WAMU???? This is our bank, we are serving, what is happen to our pays that are directed depoisted, we can't change at the drop of a dime, it takes sometime mouths. Is anyone out there thinking about us. OMG, LOSING OUR HOMES WHILE SERVING, LOSING OUR MINDS WHILE WE ARE SERVING, LOSING SAVING WHILE SERVING, LOSING OUR JOBS WHILE SERVING, LOSING OUR BENEFITS WHILE SERVING...HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE.
Although Palin can read a speech, she apparently has no original thoughts that aren't to do with killing animals or the snow machines she likes so much. How Alaska every elected her is beyond me, I'm sure her opponents are wondering this too. I mean honestly, Putin's reared head floating over Alaska's borders? Are you kidding me?

McCain, the grandstander, should be left holding the bag--and I mean Dems, walk right out of that meeting and don't give them ONE inch. I hope it blows up in his Mighty Mouse face--he is a pathetic version of his former self!
"...So assuming McCain does show up, what should we expect?..."

I expect Senator McCain to be very cranky.

Okay, First Read.  So Sarah Palin, unlike Joe Biden, does not shoot off her mouth first, and think later, but that's bad?  At least she knows who was president in 1929, not to mention when television was invented.  We don't here much about that, now, do we?

How about this:  Joe Biden added over $300million to a DEFENSE SPENDING bill in EARMARKS for the State of Delaware this year.  Somehow, I don't think all that money went to Delaware's National Guard.  Instead, it went to pork barrel projects that would boost Senator Biden's re election chances-not that he needs to do that, since the people of Delaware appear to be idiots.

Many of the posters on this board complain about 'low information voters'.  What the heck to they call themselves?  The get information, but, if it reflects badely on their candidate, they IGNORE it.

I can't imagine they call themselves blindly ignorant voters, (although that is what they are); judging by their posts, is it Messianic Voters, Obama worshipping voters,. . .
Yes the Ted Stevens protege "Sinner" Sarah takes gifts and doesn't report them.  We need to see an investigation started immediately so we can get down to the sinful ways of the Wicked Witch of Alaska.  Oh this just gets better and better as she destroys the grumpy old man's campaign from within.  Can't put more lipstick on that pig to make her look like a real leader.

So funny that McCain painted himself into a corner on the debates.  It sure looks like there's no deal coming today so he'll have to stick to his earlier committment to stay in Washington until a deal is done.  Or he can break his promise to go to the debates.  A flip flop either way for "Flip Flop" McCain and his Circular Talk Express.

Only Obama has shown wise calm bipartisan leadership while McCain has shown nothing but razzle dazzle political kabuki theater.  He can't even keep his own party in line.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
The latest polls have Obama gaining though, and it's important to note. In Michigan especially, four polls yesterday showed the race breaking wide open in his direction, up to a 13% lead. Full roundup: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/09/25/poll-watch-michigan-swings-obama-merkley-gains/
ATTENTION FELLOW CITIZENS and VOTERS !!

Today, you are about the witness the biggest coup of this political season by none other than LYIN' JOHN and the Republicans.

This whole debate scuffle with McCain was a POLITICAL STUNT, so McCain could fly into the debate on a white carpet --- having saved the entire country from economic ruin.  (P.S.- He hadn't even read Paulson's 3 page Plan!).

McCain had a bad week and poll numbers reflected it, so the Rove machine went into action and decided to enlist Republican support on Capitol Hill to pull of this stunt to hoodwink the American people and make McCain look like Superman.  What a joke, right??

Senator Obama was right yesterday and quickly saw through the whole thing.   Republicans were politicizing this economic crisis to MAKE MCCAIN LOOK LIKE THE SAVIOR.

America --- wake up !   Aren't you sick and tired of being lied to by the Republican machine ?   While voters are struggling to survive each day, John McCain and his cronies are scheming to pull the wool over voters' eyes.

NO MORE REPUBLICANS !!   NO MCCAIN !!!   Don't be fooled by today's events.

OBAMA/BIDEN '08
If people are not scared to freaking death of a McCain Presidency now, they never will be.  He appears bewildered by fast moving events, unable to control a campaign that appears hysterical and reactive. His judgment, both on his VP pick and his actions, words and deeds of the last two weeks should give serious concern about his age, and maybe worry about declining cognitive abilities.

He destroyed the chance of a recovery for his own personal ego, and we voters will wind up paying the price.

If he does not show up to debate, if he continues to try to get Palin out of hers, he has put the onus on all of us to save America from his destructive, selfish behavior.
I am so sick of John McCain trying to pull the strings of the American People as if we are his puppets.  I truely hope the People of America can see this for what it is.  He has created a circus of an already potentially dangerous ecomonic situation purely for his political gain.

It honestly makes my stomach flip to even see a picture of the man.  If he wins my family and I are moving to Canada.
The scramble to who can peddle more lies and bull crap. The best which is the truth, neither are McCain or Obama should be elected. Washington self serving paper hangers have tripped this nation, as no other congress has lost respect for law and common sense. This debate would be no more than rehashed garbage. Congress is derailed and now we the tax payer have to bail out corruption ::AGAIN::!!! Is it not a shame of how irresponsible these so called Washington self serving paper hangers have sold this nation down the drain?  Just where in the ""HELL"" did unity take the wrong turn???
Could this be a ploy to manage debate expectations? Captain Maverick can blame all his mistakes and gaffes on fatigue from running all over the eastern seaboard putting Country First.

McThuselah made the second big gamble of his compaign, and it will end up being as big a mistake as the selection of Palincomparison.

What a noob, as the kiddoes like to say.
"Had it not been for McCain's debate gambit, Palin's near-disastrous two-part interview with Katie Couric would be dominating the political discussion right now. "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
So in this one sentence you acknowledge:

- John McCain is playing political games with the debate
- The media fell for the gambit and didn't cover the fact that Sarah Palin is not only not ready to be VP, but actually not even coherent
- The media had decided once again to let the McCain campaign get away with bloody murder.

Nice job guys - another low point for the corporate media.

P.S. Nobody cares whether John McCain shows up to debate or not. He is a discredited liar, and I've heard quite enough from him already. I say he should hide out in Washington for the next 40 days. He's not running his own campaign anyway - he's a Manchurian candidate. How long do we have to keep this charade going?
I agree with James Carville, September 12th will be the day that McCain lost the race for the White House.

This undecided voter has decided and it's not McCain.
Yesterday Joh McCain did not accomplish the following:

1) He did not suspend his campaign.  Instead the operations continued and it became a sham.  He put his campaign first, not the country.

2) He did not bring resolution to the financial crisis. In all likelihood he made it worse.

3) He attended, but did not participate in the president's meeting, making no comments and asking no questions.

4. He did not lead or control the conservative wing of his party.  Essentially, the conservatives ignored Bush and McCain.

5 He did lie to Letterman resulting in two nights of scorn.

John McCain is in the hot-seat with a no-win situation.

1)If he supports a Bush/Paulson plan he angers the conservate wing--his base.
2) If he does nothing.  He shows no leadership--simply an old man with delusions of grandure.
3) If he rejects a plan he runs the risk of being blamed for a potential collaspe of the stock market.

Earlier this week I commented that there were better alternative plans than the Bush/Paulson plan.  Since we are almost back to square one, some of those plans will be presented, likely modified, and accepted.  That will take days, like the first of next week. Today the stock market will likely drop and the republicans will see that walking out is not a good idea. There will be a plan that includes most of Obama's talking points. Big question is will McCain support it.

McCain's decision will not be based on logic.  He does not want to resurrect the Keating 5 scandel, he wants a safe way out.

Though he may talk about putting Country First.  He will have little to show that he, in fact, has done so.

Let's watch the debates...John will be there. Barack called his bluff and John has to show.
Oh by the way, John McCain never actually suspended his campaign. Add that to the long list of lies he has told to this point that the media swallows hook, line, and sinker.

You guys are such suckers.
More then ever we need to hear from these candidates. John McCain is losing all honor in my eyes and I think most American view this as a political stunt and nothing to do with Country First.
Let's see if we can get the time line right on this; 1) McCain announced he is urgently needed in DC to make a deal happen.  2) A deal is announced before he arrives.  3) At a White House meeting requested by McCain he asked no questions, spoke very little, and offered no support for the proposal on the table.  4) House leaders walk out of the meeting, announce they will under no circumstances support the deal.  5) They release their own plan, based heavily in more of the deregulation that allowed the existing problem to develope.  6) WaMu fails overnight, the largest bank failure in US history.  7) This morning on live TV McCain advisor Dan Bartlett is asked if all of this is serving a useful purpose or if it is just political.  He responds "It was time to shake up the campaign."  It's clear that John McCain is willing to play chicken with the economy and therefore the livelihood of millions in order to gain the White House.
If McCain does not show up, then I predict that just before the time of the debate, the House GOP will suddenly announce that the deal that they found so abhorent 24 hours ago is acceptable, because John McCain has patiently explanied to them the dimensions of the crisis, and the need to support the plan.

Presto!  John McCain's DC photo op is saved in a brilliant political moved that merely required the House GOP to sit on the plan for 24 hours.

In the meantime, some Americans have started yanking savings out of their 401(k)'s due to the uncertainty generated by the stunt, but these Americans should put Country First before blaming John McCain.
Don't let the Repubs get away with murder once again Dems. Please keep watch, be vigilant. They could be up to something here.

McCain should be exposed for who he is and what his motives are. It's pretty darn obvious. Please folks, let's not get cheated once again in this election. Too much is at stake.

I wish they'd show on TV what happened when they debated the bill. McCain had nothing to say after all the grandstanding - I will save the day - stunt. I'm glad Obama called him on it. So what exactly was he doing in Washington? More importantly, what will he be doing tonight at 9:00 PM - have dinner?

McCain keeps justifying his threat not to show up by saying he'd invited Obama to townhall meetings. McCain - listen, tonight is the official Presidential debate. OK? The one where the entire country will be tuning in and watching and listening to every move and word.
The one where we could actually observe and judge for ourselves not just rely on sound bites and media reports.

Give the country a chance to see both of you, listen to both of you talk and discuss issues. We deserve it. We need a debate now more than ever because we would be handing over the reigns - hopefully - to one that we deem fit and qualified and trustworthy.

Once again, stop all this shenanigans, don't run anymore. Face the music. Even Bush didn't pull this stunt against Kerry and Gore.

MSNBC please post this -
Sarah Palin reminds me of former Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green's famous news conference, in which, fuming about a victorious opponent, he yelled "they are what we thought they are".  Six colleges to get her degree?  The whole Wasilla Hillbillies image?  Yeah - they are what we thought they are - NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME!!

As far as the debate, it's a job interview - and I'M doing the hiring!  Only death or illness are excuses!  Get your gluteus maximus there!
FR - It seems you guys are trying to make this debate sound - meaningless and unimportant.

Just in case you didn't know - everybody don't watch or go to high school football games.

And even if the few that did go to the "high school football games" they could still want to record it and watch it another day.

Also - even if John McCain doesn't show up - Barack Obama will still be there and believe me - there are plenty of Americans that want to see him speak on the issues - even if John McCain is too much of a chick$hit to do so.

So don't try and make this debate seem unimportant because John McCain may not show up -.because guess what.    To most Americans it is.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
McCain is just too erratic to be president.

His little drama about how he is needed in Washington just isn't credible, especially considering his request to the president to call for a high profile meeting in which we hear from everyone there that McCain actually had nothing to say.

Now, everyone involved is waiting to see if this senior juvenile decides to show for a debate. Its like watching a problem child who demands attention, even if he has to throw temper tantrums to get it.
I smell a collusion here.  For the Republican Party to take the White House and retain more seats, they needed to find a way to separate from Bush.  Woila!  They can even start saying the Democratic Party is on Bush's side.  Wish we had open meetings like in the local governments, anyone can attend, no closed doors, no back room deals.  Then no one could point fingers because we would know how the deals were actually made.
uh, Pajama Pundit, Stalin is dead.  If Palin, or anyone elso for that matter, were to meet him, the situation would be a lot more interesting than who wins the election.

But you call yourself an informed voter-I guess, like Joe Biden, you have no idea what is going on.
So, now it's come out (see Politico) that McCain called for the WH meeting, not Bush! Whoa! And then sat back and watched others fight.

If he doesn't show for the debate tonight, he can kiss his weakening chance for the WH good-bye.

Even the biggest McCain fans have to see this now for what it was - a ploy to look like a leader. It would have helped if he had spoken more at the meeting than did Obama.
You report Palin is attending a debate-watching party tonight?! Will she watch Obama present a 90 minute Town Hall all on his own or does this mean McCain knows he'd better show up!
Why aren't the pundits sending a message to McCain that if he can't come, he should send his best surrogate, Gov Palin?  What a great way for Team McCain to prove that she is even more qualified than Obama!  Come on guys, call him out!  Let's see what she's got!!
I hope that McCain shows up, because otherwise the whole campaign devolves into McCain gaming the system. If McCain does not show up, I hope that the debate goes on with Obama answering questions, with tough follow-up questions, and ultimately out-classing McCain. In any case, McCain has shown himself to be too volatile to make a good or even safe President.
President Bush, how can you tell that you are having another bad day ? Answer: When you "own" Party will not agree with you on passing the $700,000,000,000.00 bail out package.
Fox news is calling John McCain a genius, for his latest stunt in Washington. Even those idiots know  he was only there for the photo op! I think Senator Obama should go to the debate an take advantage of the air time.
I for one belive that the Bomber Bush Circus that we saw yesterday was a behind the curtin moment. After they saw the Katie C.interview and Sinner Sarahs Gaffs(you know Russia is accross the Bering Sea from us and Putin flys his Planes over us),saw the polls going Obamas way,and saw there opening when Obama called them and wanted to put out there joint statement.Showing unity. But the Bomber is the King of Drama and dosn't like it when others get attention and he dosn't.He called and got Bush involved after avoiding him for the last two months, got a photo shoot and some song and dance and injected himself, into something that he has limited experance. When asked for his position he refused ,I saw the looks he waas giving the Darth while sitting at the table, there little smiles at each other says it all,Karl is alive the distract party is in full swing and I bet it will not be over till the end of next and another Debate will be off,
Does anybody notice the governments investment in all these companies looks like a beginning of a Socialistic government, even a die hard LIB should notice that.
McCain does not support this bailout; an agreement seemed to be imminent until he showed up in Washington and egged his conservative cohorts on.

And, he's playing it safe and not even committing to backing the conservative plan offered by House Repubs.

John, you can't have it both ways...but I guess it's a great excuse for underperforming at the debate (if you even show up at all)
To Tei Franks, who says:
"Getting his hands dirty on an issue like the bailout is not Barack's cup-of-tea."

You are not paying attention.  Obama was working yesterday during the White House meeting to get the sides to come to an agreement.  John McCain sat there and said NOTHING.  This is being reported by many different media outlets.  Either keep up with what is really going on, or take your garbage partisan spin somewhere else.

People's futures are at stake.  The time for games is done.
The Bush/Republican "New Deal Doctrine" The sky is falling ! The sky is falling ! Deal or No Deal ?
If McCain won't attend the debate, can't Palin step in for him and debate Obama?  I can only dream.
Believe all of Mccains pandering, tricks, lies
have finally caught up with him.
Only he wanted to go to Washington to stir up
the waters. Believe th negotiations were in
as capable hands as you can get with politicians
but he wanted to showcase and what he did was
was bring on additional problems.
If he does not show up for the debate that will
be the end of Mccain.
If Obama had agreed to what McCain wanted they would have already had 6-8 town hall meetings.  Why is he so anxious now?  I haven't heard him take a strong stance as to the specifics of this plan.  If he is relying on Dodd, frank, and Pelosi that alone makes me question his judgement.  I guess the wind is blowing him west, far far away from taking a stand that he and the Democrats will have to answer to.  They want the Republicans to share the blame.
I don't want Obama to lose his cool. I just want him to call McCain what he is: a gambler, a reckless showboater, a non-executive type politician who is more comfortable on the outside than on the inside. Obama has the temperment to lead the nation, McCain doesn't.
No jo etc. Palin can debate Putin's head, which is apparently rearing up over Alaska.
