McCain: Trying to change the subject

Posted: Monday, September 29, 2008 9:26 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Is the pressure on McCain again to figure out a way to change the subject this week? The Washington Post's Balz and Murray write, "The burden now falls on Sen. John McCain to reverse the effects of the focus on the economy, and to keep the contest close enough so that a dominant debate performance, a gaffe by Obama or some outside event can shift the momentum back to him. Although Friday's debate in Oxford, Miss., produced no outright winner, strategists in both parties said the coming weeks, which will include three more debates -- two between McCain and Obama and the third between vice presidential candidates Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. -- could be decisive in determining whether the election remains on a trajectory favorable to Obama or shifts back toward too-close-to-call status."

More: “‘The first lesson of this campaign, going back to 2007, is not to be panicky or reactive to poll numbers,’ said McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt. ‘A few weeks back, we had a clear lead, albeit a narrow one, and there were a lot of people on the Democratic side haranguing the Obama campaign in the sense of panic. We always understood not only would that lead dissipate but bounce back the other way and then bounce back again.’”

Also: “Schmidt said the campaign will press two arguments as forcefully as possible in the coming days. One is that Obama is not ready to be commander in chief and that, in a time of two wars, ‘his policies will make the world more dangerous and America less secure.’ Second, he said, McCain will argue that, in a time of economic crisis, Obama will raise taxes and spending and ‘will make our economy worse.’”

Los Angeles Times also wonders how McCain gets back on track. "McCain returns to the trail today after a dramatic but rocky four-day detour that upended his campaign, upset supporters and gave new ammunition to critics who question his judgment. McCain will appear at a rally in Columbus, Ohio, in hopes of regaining the momentum he lost when he abruptly canceled campaign events and returned here Thursday to try to broker a $700-billion bailout of the crippled financial industry."

McCain friend Bill Kristol writes that McCain appears headed for defeat in November. “He has a chance. But only if he overrules those of his aides who are trapped by conventional wisdom, huddled in a defensive crouch and overcome by ideological timidity. Among his suggestions, Kristol recommends that McCain go after Obama for being a liberal and that he play the Jeremiah Wright card.

CBN's Brody reports on the DNC's efforts to take advantage on the Sunday New York Times story about McCain's ties to the gaming industry.

Here’s that Times story: “Mr. McCain portrays himself as a Washington maverick unswayed by special interests, referring recently to lobbyists as “birds of prey.” Yet in his current campaign, more than 40 fund-raisers and top advisers have lobbied or worked for an array of gambling interests -- including tribal and Las Vegas casinos, lottery companies and online poker purveyors.”

Why doesn't the MSM have the guts to report on McCain losing his temper and cursing during the debate???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gca95tOKOZg

The media's agenda to keep races close for ratings will be the death of democracy in America - the public has a right to know what a hothead temper McCain has!!!!
<<One is that Obama is not ready to be commander in chief and that, in a time of two wars, ‘his policies will make the world more dangerous and America less secure.’>>

You mean less secure than we are now, after we've ticked off the world with our bogus war in Iraq?

Is it possible to sink any lower than this???

Good advice from Crystal - keep up the smear factor and continue to show us what a creep you are.
I'm sure "Bush Hugger" McCain will find some new despicable petty partisan distractions to pull out this week while Obama works on staying on message on the real issues that middle class Americans care about.  So funny how even the conservative pundits are dogging the Dumb and Dumber ticket and how their boy has panicked time and time again.

We need more than a change in subject by the frail old ignorant man, we need a change of party in the White House.  The worst thing that could happen to our secular democracy would be for the bigots to win it for "Herbert Hoover" McCain.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
The economy is the only subject, and it is far reaching, not only to our banks and investment houses
and wall street, but as far as Iraq and Afganastan. McCain really dont get it, Iraq he dont get it , we have won all we are going to win, We got rid of Saddham, they have free elections and they have a army. The Iraq's have big money in the bank and they want US out.  Well theres 10 to 12 billion dollars of our money. Its the economy stupid. McCain dont get it.
He does not feel our pain, born with a silver spoon in his mouth and up his butt, he dont get it. He cant have his wars, he cant be the king of the world, he dont get it. We have no money for him to play God like Bush did. His campaign has ruined him with all the lies and cheap shots. Most of us pray he's finished.

Obama/Biden
marty
Pleeze; that's all McFossil has right now....to change the subject. He offers nothing and Palin offers even less. Have you EVER seen such a moron picked for VP (oh, wait a minute, didn't Bush pick Quale? Opps, seems to be a pattern with the Repukes, doesn't it?)? This whole economic bailout should rest soley on McFossil and the greedy Republicans who have been in charge the last 8 years. Yes, McFossil for chairing the committee for deregulation and the Republicans for their never ending support of the Wall Street types that lobby for them to remain in office. Country First......my a$$. If McFossil TRULY believed that line, would he have chosen one of the weakest and unqualified people in America as his running mate? America faces some of the biggest challenges ever as a nation and McFossil picks someone who can't even give a decent interview? Yeah, right, we ALL believe you're thinking about the "little guy" McCain; really we do.  Obama/Biden '08/'12
John McCain is a dishonorable man running a dishonorable campaign.  His record has shown a lack of character, including:
* not taking flight training seriously while in the Navy, hot dogging it and crashing three aircraft;
*broadcasting anti-American messages on North Vietmanese radio while a POW
*cheating on his first beauty queen wife after she became disabled, dumping her and then marrying a younger, richer beauty pageant winner as his second wife;
*corrupting his office as Sentor by trying to shield S&L owner Charles Keating;
*contemplating changing parties to become a Democrat in the early 2000s then denying it;
*adopting George Bush's sleazy campaign tactics from 2000 to try to defeat his 2008 opponent.
McCain is not a maverick, he is a rebel without a cause or core convictions. McCain First!
yes, that's John  Mccain all right.  trying to change the subject on the economy because he knows Bush & McBush and the rest of the repubs have run this country into the ground.  And mccain can try to distance himself from Bush--but the fact of the matter is mccain voted with Bush 90% of the time.  And all the smoke & mirrors in the world can't change that.
McCain  has a gambling problem. No, not the kind featured in the NY Times story. The kind that makes him want to gamble away our futures and our stability, all with the egotistical goal of portraying himself as a maverick. I'm sorry, that works when you're a senator when there are others who can counterbalance your stance. When you are the top of the heap, shaking things up just because you are bored cannot bode well for those of us looking for stability and reliability. Change for the fun of it is not responsible.
The DNC needs to get a clue.  Your empty suit of a candidate is being exposed as a fraud.  Gambling is LEGAL.  No one forces anyone to participate.

Kind of reminds me of the response to the abortion question Dems always trot out.

Here's one I haven't seen.  OBAMA SMOKES.  When he got back from his European vacation, he went to an emergency room to get his arm looked at; reporters were waiting outside for him, and you could see him hiding the cigarette behind his back.  I would have thought that the reporters who worship at his feet would have waited for him to finish his marlboro before turning on the cameras, but they didn't.

Is that a reason not to vote for him?  Not in my mind.  I'm not voting for him because he is a far left liberal who won't take a stand on anything, not because he is a smoker.  The rest of you can draw your own conclusions.
McCain has shown thar panic is his only motivator, when things look good, McCain sees everything as al right, but when his numbers are down he panics and throws the long ball, is this how he will run the White House, Panic one minute, and laziness the rest of the time. We have had that for almost eight years. Time to move on to better ways.
Get ready for the "MOTHER OF ALL LIES" campaign from the McCain campaign
I would love to know just what campaign events McCain suspended???  Yes, he made a great grandstand as is typical of him, to get in front of the tv cameras to prove to the country that he fits his carefully honed 'maverick' persona.
However, I believe the only thing he did differently was cancel an appearance on the David Letterman show in order to meet with mega fundraiser,Lady Lynn Forester de Rothschild .

A Mavorick or a man who doesn't keep his committments?
I just fear the October surprise!
FR: "Schmidt said the campaign will press two arguments as forcefully as possible in the coming days. One is that Obama is not ready to be commander in chief and that, in a time of two wars, ‘his policies will make the world more dangerous and America less secure.’ Second, he said, McCain will argue that, in a time of economic crisis, Obama will raise taxes and spending and ‘will make our economy worse.’"

Yep, that's the McCain campaign in a nutshell.

First, they'll say Obama is risky, though like McCain in the debate, I'm sure they'll never get around to explaining exactly how.

Second, they'll keep repeating their line (debunked by pretty much every fact checker out there) about Obama raising taxes on anyone making $42k a year.
I don't know how wise it is to play the "Jeremiah Wright Card". It is old and everyone has already received the "shock". Also, that opens the door for someone, ANYONE, to open play the set book of the "Witch Hunting Sarah Palin's Pastor Card".

Why can't he put country first and stay on the issues? Why can't he win with the issues?
McCain can say and do anything he wishes to try to change the subject.
But, the facts are the facts.  Those facts are he is a member of the party that has been in control for more than half of the last  8 years.  And today that control is about to cost the taxpayer 700 billion bucks, and even that may not be enough.
Couple that with his childish ploy to grab headlines last week by behaving like a whinning child who has missed his nap completely destroys any argument he can make about Obama's readiness.  When the person who is running for the office of President openly admits he cannot handle more than one big event at a time it just enforces the fact that McCain will not be able to juggle the many "big deals" that will happen everyday during the presidency.
Along with these "facts" we can, just for good measure, toss in the Palin pick.  Judgement? nope we call that Pandering.
Bill Kristol was spot on in predicting that McCain might choose Gov. Palin as his running mate. However, he is mistaken if he thinks John McCain can win the presidency by attacking Obama for his affiliation with Jeremiah Wright.

Lest Kristol forget, Obama is his own man and just because he found spiritual kinship with the congregants at that church does not mean he agreed with every dogmatic position of it's pastor.

With that strategy, Kristol better hope the McCain campaign can come up with more videos than the ones that ran in an endless loop on FXnoise for several months.  I suspect if there were any more that were as inflammatory as the ones we've already seen they would be playing endlessly right now!

Given that Obama attended that church for approximately 20 years he could have been in attendance for close to a thousand sermons and he was offended by 8 or 10 renderings that's about what most of us experienced in a similar time span with our pastor. Dare I say most people don't continually change churches because the pastor decides to act out occassionally.

Obama/Biden
Not be panicky?? Johnny Mac always seems to be in panic mode!! One reason he would make a terrible leader.
Can McCain effectively argue experience with Sarah Palin as his VP running mate?  She's the least ready to be president of all four candidates.

He switched from experience to change because experience wasn't working for him.  He chose Palin for "change," now he wants to go back to experience.  I don't think it will work.  More than half of those polled don't think Palin is ready to be President of the United States.
McCain might want to change the subject on his own gambling problem alongside his HUGE ties (along with campaign advisers) to the Indian gambling industry. Searing NY Times article this weekend especially in light of the evangelical base and gambling don't mix.
If I hear McCain referring to himself, or for that matter Sara Palin, as a maverick again I think I am going to scream.
Rev Wright...what??

What about the witch hunter praying over Palin?  Are you kidding me?  Rev Wright v Palin's pastor and McCain's endorsements, I think the republicans will stay away from this subject.

McCain needs to take his ball and go home!  He is no maverick and he is out of control and out of touch!
