McCain ad hits Obama on 'clean coal'

Posted: Monday, September 29, 2008 11:43 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy and NBC's Domenico Montanaro
The McCain campaign seizes on Biden's ropeline flub that the Democratic ticket does not support "clean" coal in new radio ads released in targeted battleground states -- Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

It uses Biden's YouTube moment saying that he's not supporting clean coal to rile up voters.

Obama's energy plan specifically mentions "clean coal" -- "Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology" -- as a way to "Create Millions of New Green Jobs."

It's an interesting play, since one of the major problems the Left has with Obama is that he's seen as a coal senator (largely, because Illinois politicians have to be to win downstate Illinois.)

The Washington Post (Jan. 10, 2007): "So why then, environmentalists ask, is Obama backing a law supporting the expanded use of coal, whose emissions are cooking the globe? It seems the answer is twofold: his interest in energy independence -- and his interest in downstate Illinois, where the senator's green tinge makes the coal industry queasy.

"The coal industry praises Obama's reintroduction, with Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), of the Coal-to-Liquid Fuel Promotion Act of 2007 last week, which would provide incentives for research and plant construction. The industry says the technology, which converts coal into diesel engine fuel, would reduce America's dependence on foreign oil through a new, home-mined fuel that burns as cleanly as gasoline. Environmentalists say focusing on coal does nothing to arrest climate change. Instead, they say, lawmakers should back cleaner alternative fuels and stricter automobile and industrial emissions standards."

And Obama touts his support of the 2005 energy bill, "saying it will help Illinois and start America down the path to energy independence by doubling ethanol use, greatly increasing the availability of E85 ethanol pumps, and investing in combination plug-in hybrid and flexible-fuel vehicles, as well as clean-coal technology."

*** UPDATE *** In response, the Obama campaign provided this 2000 quote from McCain, who told a Senate committee witness for environmental group Sierra Club that "in a perfect world we would like to transition away from coal entirely."

"At a hearing on global warming and reductions in greenhouse gases, Ann     Mesnikoff, Washington Representative for the Sierra Club Global Warming and Energy Program stated, “I think that one can get into the arguments about clean coal, but I think the issue is to transition away from coal use and to do it in a way that is good for the economy.” McCain replied, “I would not disagree with you that in a perfect world we would like to transition away from coal entirely. But there is certainly, at least from my understanding, there is a dramatic difference in the effects of the so-called dirty coal in a broad variety of ways as opposed to the cleaner coal.” [Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, Hearing On Reductions In Greenhouse Gases, 9/21/2000]"

Here's the Colorado script:
ANNCR: Clean Coal is important to America. And to Colorado. For Coloradoans, coal means thousands of jobs. Economic growth. More affordable electricity. For America, coal means energy independence. And clean coal means cleaner air. But Obama-Biden and their liberal allies oppose clean coal.

Listen to Joe Biden.
JOE BIDEN: "No coal plants here in America". "We're not supporting clean coal".
ANNCR: No coal plants in America? No jobs in Colorado? No energy independence for America?

It's no surprise. After all, Obama-Biden and their liberal allies opposed off-shore drilling. Congressional liberals blocked off-shore drilling putting special interests, before our interests.

Obama-Biden and their liberal allies. Too risky for our jobs, our economic future. Paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee.
JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approved this message.

More to come from Palin-Couric

Howie Kurtz raised some eyebrows by reporting this morning that "the worst may be yet to come for Palin; sources say CBS has two more responses on tape that will likely prove embarrassing."

A source familiar with CBS News’ plans clarified that this is part of the "Vice Presidential Questions" series with Biden and Palin. The recorded segments are scheduled to air Wednesday and Thursday before the vice presidential debate. (The series is based on the Presidential Questions series, in which Couric asks the candidates the same set of questions on wide range of topics from policy to character to leadership.)

No word on the content.
The obvious choice for President is McCain. He has the experience, the ideas, the leadership qualities, and the foresight to bring change to Washington. But the media will have none of that. The media has gone so liberal that their bias is showing for all the world to see. They like Obama, he has a good story, and he sounds good, and most people in the media agree wtih what he says. No matter Obama has no experience, no accomplishments, no resume, no history. Obama would be the first President elected solely because the media has gone so deep in the tank for him.
Rope-line comments into commercials.... then I can't wait to see the Obama Campaign put up a commercial on the NUMEROUS times that Palin has stood with Obama on Pakistan - despite what McNoEyeContact said on Sunday.

Oh and Biden was talking about no 'dirty' coal plants here in America, unlike those in China.

Obama/Biden 08
As much as I like Biden, he needs to be more mindful and pick his words more carefully.

I'm looking at the podium in OH right now with Sen. McCain, Cindy and Gov. Palin on the stage next to him.

Gov. Palin is saying the same old things-AGAIN-and doing her 'heeeere's Johnny'.

One thing is crystal clear. Sen. McCain has captured the 'Barbie' vote, if that podium is any indication. At least Mrs. McCain finally has company up there instead of standing there doing nothing, often alone, like a mannequin.
Missouri's a rollin just like Senator Obama will Nov. 4th.  Senator McNuthin offer nuthin'!  Whoever takes over next year is going to have to cutback or slowdown their plans.  And yet McSame would stay in Iraq til some delusional criteria of victory is achieved while spending further billions weekly.  Senator's Obama and Biden represent real change.  Go Tigers and Obama.
I'm John McBush and I approve of anything but clean politics.
McCain is a fossile from a prehistoric, Bush propaganda period.
What and how is McCain going to get us to energy independence and fight two wars?

Uh!  He needs to shut up, he mentioned nothing about energy independence as it relates to his failed Middle Eastern policies in the debate.
So they know it's not true...but somehow this is not the same as lying?
...but if the Obama campaign picked up any of Palin's 13 million "flubs" and ran with it -- they would be labled "sexist" by the McCain campaign
Why did they change the debate rules for this VP showdown? I understand that neither candidate will be allowed to "check" or question his or her opponent. I have never heard of that. Have the goal posts been changed to help Sarah? Apparently so!! To those who have been hoping that Biden will tear her up; it ain't going to be allowed apparently. Wow!! Who will protect her is ahe is VP or ( shudder) POTUS??
Another day, another McCain campaign lie.
You can't blame Joe Biden for not knowing what Obama's stance on clean coal or anything else, for that matter.  Obama deliberately uses rhetoric so vague, yet so important sounding, that anything can be read into his statements.

Therefore, environmentalists believe he is against coal, while those who are for clean coal believe he is for it.  It is the same with taxes, the bail out bill, etc.  The strongest stand he will take on anything is to vote 'present'.

We cannot afford, economically or security-wise, to have this empty suit in the White HOuse.
No one's buys the GOP 'liberal'"tax & spend''socialized' tags anymore..
not after what we've seen the Republicans do economically. They have ZERO credibility on
economic issues.
+ we all SAW AND HEARD Obama mention clean coal in
the debate friday night.
Yet another desperate attempt by the McCain camp to take America's eye off the ball.
It won't work.
Obama's action. McCain's just empty words.
Would someone please tell us just exactly what "clean coal" is.  Many, many in the science community argue that clean coal is a subject for Alchemists to take up.

The issue really has nothing to do with coal and everything to do with trying to get the votes of coal centric communities.
Obama was in Wyoming and talked about coal and his pro coal-I was 50 feet away from him and heard him clear.  McCain is up to mixing the messages.  Get your fact straight McCain-it just won't work
Yeah, I'll echo the sentiments of a post above this...Biden and Obama miscommunicate on one thing, and the Repugs are up in arms about it.

As opposed to the DOZENS of misstatements that McCain and Palin have made, stepping on each other's statements on what seems like a daily basis.
I just wanted to say I can't wait for McCane/Palin to finally be gone. I just caught them speaking at one of their ridiculous rallies and wonder if they think people are in a coma. He talks about being honest, lol what a joke!!! That must be the few times he and his running mate weren't lying which hasn't been too often. And now he's going on about how he will help the struggling middle class???? LOL Funny he didnt mention that even once during the debate. In fact he clearly said yet again that he would give tax cuts to the wealthy and big business' so who does he think he's kidding?? Hope they enjoy the next 36 days of shoveling their bs because after that they'll be nothing more than a bad memory.

Blah, blah, blah.  I can't listen to a liar such as mccain.

This over 50, female will vote for Obama this year.

Coal will never be clean.  Anything that you have to burn through combustion will never be clean.  It can be very clean, but it will never be total clean.  If there was a way that power companies were willing to do to keep the exhaust fumes (CO2 CO and others) contained, then it would be less bad and usable for the time being until we can use nothing but fusion, solar, wind and fission.
Clean coal is a fairy tale --  don't we wish so hard it could come true!!!
Not surprising that "Bush Hugger" McCain lies about Obama's support of clean coal technology.  The Bush Hugger can't make any honest truthful ads about his own wrong headed decisions that have kept big oil riding high while objecting to every bit of clean energy legislation until he started running for president.

We can't trust Johnny Come Lately to do anything to reduce our national demand on foreign oil because he has a long sordid history of stopping smart legislation to increase fuel efficiency or to get new alternative energy going.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
I love supporters of McCain who declare their unwavering support of the 'obvious' choice based on labels (visionary, experienced, ideas to bring change) but can name not one example of that visionary leadership or how McCain's proposed policies represent change from what now exists. But this is typical of Republicans; their candidate is "patriotic", has "values", is a "leader" but specifics are tossed out the window.

For those who think this way, you've had 8 years of platitudes, labels, and shenanigans. ENOUGH! You'll just have to live in this country without your 'leaders'. It's time for the rest of us to have a chance to clean out this WH and the policies that resulted in Iraq; in the shameful response to Katrina; to the terrible infrastruture problem we have because of no leadership on building roads/bridges; and finally for this financial disaster. "Thanks but no thanks" to 4 more years of politicians that do not know how to govern.
When Biden said "We're not supporting clean coal"...I thought he meant we should be supporting clean coal.

So that's the difference in the two campaigns. If Palin gaffes, the Democrats point it out. If Biden says something wrong, the Republicans turn it into a lie about Obama's position.

Unethical and irresponsible. That's McCain all over.
Clean coal sounds good in coal industry ads, but the present use of coal is anything but clean. From an environmentalist perspective, can the industry make clean coal a reality and can coal be extracted from the ground without massive destruction of mountaintops?
What's silly is that Obama's energy plan can be read by Americans (if they choose to educate themselves on Obama's plan which will hault their leverage to point the finger at him on this issue).  I hope in the next debate that Obama tells Americans to read his plan for themselves and not trust the lies of McCain.
I wish people would actually get their heads out of the ground and see that Obama DOES have experience, a lot more experience than Palin and better experience than mccain. I think that too many people go around repeating what they hear on "The TV" and they sound like they dont know anything, wait its because they dont. I hope that everyone watches these debates and sees the childish way Mccain answers his questions, he has no stance on anything other than the opposite of Obama, thats not the experience that we need.  Grow up people, read, do your research and you might be amazed at what you find. Obama will win this and i hope you can deal with it.
wrong, Biden was talking about clean coal technology and how he wont support it. Ever been to Delaware? The senator's home state is a biohazard nightmare. Maybe he should work on cleaning up close to homw
All of the experience in the world saddled with "Bad Judgement" and wrong temperment does not produce nor project the right direction!
Yes, Biden messed up.  How absolutely honorable of the McCain campaign to make an ad out of a mistake.  Good Job, John McCain----hypocrit of the year.  You promised a good, clean, honest campaign.  I was foolish enough to believe you, but no more.  I am sick and tired of the dishonesty.  I want complete transparancy in the campaigns and for a large nose to be the corner of each ad, growing with every lie or misleading statement.  And I want it for both campaigns.
Has anyone else noticed that Chris Matthews and Keith Obberman are both going Obama crazy. Even when both McCain and Obama made the same gaf earlier last week about firing the SEC chairman, Keith only reported that McCain had done it. Didn't say a word about Obama. On TV at least, MSNBC is not doing its job as a fair and impartial reporter of the news. Kudos to CNN for at least trying to be fair.
There is a lot of talk about liberals coming from repubs, but they have no credibility, They are the people who voted Bush in twice to lead this Country and look at the mess he made. I will take a liberal any day.

Obama/Biden
We Coloradans are smarter than that.
Biden is a man of passion and great experience.  Unfortunately his passion can get the better of him and run out in front of his words, so to speak.  Meaning, he says something stupid from a place of intelligence.

Ethanol from corn is a lousy, lousy, LOUSY way to make us energy independent.  Get it from sugarcane or switchgrass but NOT from corn!  The ratio of energy return is total crap and makes our foods more expensive.  We can grow sugarcane like mad in LA, AL, FL and maybe GA and keep it in the family here in the US.  Corn ethanol is a mistake and has already proven so over the last year or so.
Their ( oabam and biden ) mixed signals are unmistakeable slip ups, obama says one thing and Biden says what they are really going to do. Clearly mixed communicaion.  When they lie , they need to be better organized at it !
How could Biden have been talking about no 'dirty' coal plants here in America when he flat out said "We're NOT SUPPORTING CLEAN COAL." ???
Whatever Obamna supports is awesome.   Obama is just awesome.   Have you read the news lately?  Turned on the TV?   Obama is just friggin awesome.

I think Biden should hit McCain hard on the issues during the next debate,He should also ask Palin to hurry up and get back to Alaska to watch those pesky Russians, you know they just might invade!
