Obama camp goes after Fiorina

Obama camp has an ad of its own going up on national cable, according to a campaign release, that hits McCain on CEO golden parachutes and invokes economic adviser Carly Fiorina. Fiorina is a former CEO of Hewlett Packard, who received multi-million dollar compensation when she left the position.

"Last week, another bank went under. But its CEO could walk away with $19 million," an announcer says. "John McCain’s advisor, Carly Fiorina -- the fired CEO who left with $42 million. Barack Obama says it’s got to change, demanded any Wall St. bailout restricts CEO pay."

There has been some dispute as to the amount of Fiorina's severance package. In fact, the New York Times article from Feb. 12, 2005, cited in Obama's ad, notes that Fiorina "will receive a severance package worth about $21.4 million, and stands to gain at least $21.1 million more. The additional amount reflects the estimated value of her pension, stock options and Hewlett stock holdings, which the company did not include in her severance package."

The way it breaks down: $14 million in severance pay, an additional $7.38 million "bonus for meeting certain performance goals." HP also "agreed to pay her $50,000 for legal, financial and career counseling and will continue her health and personal security benefits for about a year." And: "Ms. Fiorina also received restricted grants of about 826,000 shares during her tenure, that along with her other Hewlett holdings, now have a market value of $18.2 million. In addition, Ms. Fiorina will receive a pension of at least $200,000 a year that was not included in the company's severance calculations. The pension could be worth at least $2 million, compensation specialists said. She will also keep her computer, receive technical support for three months, and have access to a secretary for six months."

Fiorina has been notably absent from what had been a highly visible role as a surrogate, since she said neither Palin nor McCain (nor Obama or Biden for that matter) were qualified to run a major corporation.

I am a WaMu customer...rather, I was until Friday.  I read that the CEO of WaMu, who held the job for less than three weeks, is entitled to walk away with over $13million in severance from his contract.

THREE WEEKS!  He did NOTHING for the bank except sign on the dotted line for the JPMC takeover...

That's not right.
Ted, Mary Jo is waiting. Take your time, she's very patient.
Pensions, stock options, and stock are forms of compensation, no? So maybe the ad is correct as it is. What's the controversy? My employer (a university) sends me a letter each year adding up my "total compensation". They include everything, including library access, which they say is worth $100 a year.

I'd say $42 million is pretty accurate. I wish the media was not so susceptible to GOP push back on these things. Do you have any obligation to truth? Or do you just blindly juxtapose rhetorical truth claims? Because that's not very helpful.
I think the government should set the salaries for everyone. Just like Russia used to do.
Really, these golden parachutes have got to stop. It's just so unfair. Way to go Barack.
Obama's not mad at Carly. He's jealous.
The more government control over our daily lives, the better. That way, I don't have to think.
Enough.  If it weren't for the people at the top do you think the workers would do anything.  duh.  It's all about being big enough to lead and those below just need to shut up and enjoy the ride.  How many workers put in 80 to a hundred hours a week.  Carly worked hard for me and her company.  Tahe it from a Peee OH DoubleU who knows what suffering is.  It's like being a CEO and not being appreciated.
Good that Obama is going after "Secretary" Fiorina who did nothing but trash Hewlett Packard.  She got fired for her incompetent performance, and for spying, and she walked away with a massive golden parachute.

Typical that "Bush Hugger" McCain would defend her poor record that he somehow manages to forget and forgive her her overblown golden parachute because he is part of the problem for allowing CEO compensation for getting out of hand and reality.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Once again, Barack Obama, the head of the nanny state Democrats, just does not get it. If the people that invest in HP didn't like what the CEO got paid, they had every right to sell their stock. Many didn't, and because of that, they've made a nice profit on their HP stock since Carly left.

this is crazy, she drove that company in to the ground, thousand of middle class workers lost there jobs, and she gets to keep her health ins, plus 42 million dollars!!! this is not fare!! she should have been made to stay with that company or been fired and gotten nothen!!!
john mccain, how can you look american in the face with this person as your econimic adviser!!! even before she said how tough it is to run a company,
yes carla run it in the ground!!!
It's pathetic for McCain to be carried by individuals like Fiorina ! McCain is so desperate to get into the history books that he totally sold out to the neo-cons. He's a grumpy, confused old man - and his VP is an insult to the nation ! HE has become an insult!

His time is running out and people will remember him for this last pathetic chapter.
Wow, wow, wow. How's HP doing these days, anyway? I heard the last CEO of WAMU (centered right here in Seattle) got an 18 million dollar severence after being the CEO for 19 days. Not bad.
Looking to this woman as a guru of industry makes as much sense as how FOX SPEWS has the same genius pundits that haven't been right since 2002. Still waiting for that liberator's welcome.

I worked for HP as a contractor - at a building 2 miles from here that sits empty, now.

She made a small fortune the old-fashioned way - she started with a large one. She also shares Bush's opinion of the 4th Amendment.
Essentially, Obama is trying eliminate risk from the market. That's impossible to do though without the government controlling everything. Rather then some people winning and getting rich, Obama wants us all to fail, and stay poor. At least we'll all be equal then though, right?
Come on, now. Forty-two million really isn't all that much considering what the cost of energy will be during the McSame administration. After all, Carly will need to drive to the bank, her broker's office, the spa, the country club, etc. and those gas bills will add up. Surely you don't expect the "well-heeled" to be walking, do you?
Fiorina has been a disaster for the McCain campaign, first raising the issue of health insurance covering viagra, but not birth control, which led to an excruciating McCain moment. What has been lost in recent press coverage is that she left HP under a cloud after tapping the phones of HP Board Members. How like Cheney! Indicative of McCain?
WONDERFUL

Time to do an Ad that says
John McCain was MIA on GI Bill but says he LOVES THE TROOPS.
HUH???

Another one
Where was John McCain while Katrina hit NO??
He was on Airforce 1 eating Bithday cake with Bush.
NICE
OK, so Carly says what –" My golden parachute was worth ONLY 21 million"? Great comeback, huh?
Class warfare. Pure and simple. Sounds good on the stump. Fails measably in practice.
It's amazing that McShame can talk about not handing out golden parachutes to CEO's and then has one working for him. Where was that comment from Obama in the debate? I aways thought Fired=Failed. Yet, still these people get millions?
What took so long to air this add?!  We've only been talking about it for the past 3 weeks!  Obama, your campaign people need to speed things up!
It's about time Obama took the gloves off
Fiorina has gotten a lot after putting HP through the ringer of embarressment.  No wonder she disappeared after "run a corporation" comments.  McCain can't have someone like that around that doesn't conform.  Maybe she has taken all of the compensation for quiet trip; most of us would like to be given that amount of money right now.
Speaking a ailin' Palin, is she going to be exhibited in public again before the election?  The GOP has a lot invested in the swim suit competition.
And When McCain was asked about her golden parachute two weeks ago, he smilrf that scary psycho smile and claimed to know nothing about it. He also said she was a role model for all women!!  Does he vet ANYONE in his campaign???????
Speaking of ailin' Palin, is she going to be exhibited in public again before the election?  The GOP has a lot invested in the swim suit competition.
Carly nearly ran a silicon valley icon into the ground and then got caught spying on her own governance board so they paid her to leave before the company went bankrupt...

Sort of like george bush being paid 18 million by MLB to get the heck away from the texas rangers before he ruined them...went on become governor and president...amazing stuff
Obama wants only friends and supporters like Franklin Raines walking away with compensation. Nobody has said Carly Fiorina did anything wrong or did not deserve any severance she received from HP. She did not bankrupt the company or get under the table payments.
I guess it is ok if you support Obama financially or with advice to drive Fannie Mae into the ground and require this bailout. Just send another check
I'm glad someone is telling the truth.

Independent for the Good guys.

Obama/Biden
Good for Obama. McCain is not only TOAST, he is charred.
I don't remember HP asking for a government bail out.  I do know that Obama's advisors (Raines & Johnson) got golden parachutes after helping to run fannie mae and freddie mac in financial problems.  Also is Obama going to give back the contributions he took from Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac?  This whole financial mess can, an is, the fault of both parties.
Way to go team Obama, slam them at every opportunity please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if the parachute fits, wear it...
This harpy is not well remembered at HP.  Mentioning her name there still illicits scowl and a few choice words.
The point is that this money came from H.P., NOT the taxpayers.  If the shareholders of that company had no problem with the package, so what?

The bail out today is being debated in CONGRESS, not in a shareholder meeting.  See the difference?

It's really easy, Obama.  Private vs. public.  Or is this a clue that you really don't know the difference.

Every day, this guy is more scary.
My HP pc's mother board blew up a couple weeks ago.  Evidently, Fiorino doesn't know how to run a company either.
The original mavericks?  More like thr original crooks.
Finally, Obama decided to use this. Great the other point to note is that 2,500 HP worker are going to loose their jobs this year and she left the firm in a disaster while collecting all that money!!!

America wake up - the rich is staying rich.

Who do you think is going to fight for you? The guy that has 7-9 houses and can afford to lose half? Or the guy that has one and one car? Tell me who do you think will understand the middle class struggles and will go in that White House and set regulations that will stop the bleeding for the middle and lower class from rising above????

Obama/Biden
Fiorina has been notably absent from what had been a highly visible role as a surrogate, since she said neither Palin nor McCain (nor Obama or Biden for that matter) were qualified to run a major corporation.

I guess she should of included herself on that list.
hahahahahahahahahaha laughing, smirk, giggle, this is great, just love it
Good job on behalf of the Obama team.
very true-and good for Obama!!!!  We need to have those CEO's now fined 40 to 50 % for the mess they created- Cox needs to stay in and help clean the mess he made and have a pay freeze on his salary until the work is done!  Dont do a budget freeze-do a freeze on those who caused this mess!
You can always tell when a McCain spokesperson screws up big......They Disappear!  McCain has no principles or values to stand on though so he always puts them back on camera after a short media cool down.  In the long run however, these people McCain must hide from time to time are the very people who will cause McCain to lose because he's sold his soul to win at all costs and America sees that desperation which was most eveident with his Palin VP pick.
I think CF needs to add her own name to the list of people who can't run a major corporation.  The who's who of who can't run a corp?  Ask Fiorina.  She should know because she can't run one either.
I wish I could be fired and given millions and millions of dollars. Hell, I'd even WORK for millions and millions of dollars.
What are they stalling for, so they pay people & the CEO's like Fiorina before they hand us the bill??? Home owners are going down the tubes. What are they going do,live under a bridge while Paulson is so inconsiderate; Didn't mention about we the taxpayers/homeowners. We pay but they don't care about us down here. Obama is right to gear in on this. I'm so sick to death of this Golden Parachute crap. This money could help the homeless & the new homeless to be. I'm sick to death of these Republican mandates with our $$$$
It's about time the Obama campaign hit McCain hard on this issue. Fiorina is the poster child for the way that CEO's have ravaged Wall Street. She could not run a company and was richly rewarded for it; such behavior has got to stop.

John McCain cited Ms. Fiorina as one of his most admired advisors during the Saddleback Setup at Rick Warren's church. John, don't look now, but your bad judgement is showing yet again.

OBAMA/BIDEN
Anyone who fails in their job as a corporate executive should be handed an empty box, told to clean out their desk, and shown the door.  Anyone else failing so miserably at their job would leave with nothing.  It is the height of hypocrisy and arrogance that these people should expect to leave with such gross amounts of their investor's money.  Great ad.

Obama/Biden '08
Here in northern California, the HP debacle was covered very closely and the golden parachute that Carly received was considered down-right obscene in light of the fact that she was spying on her employees. It made sense that she would end up on McCain's campaign since this is obviously ANOTHER person with no morals or scruples. That she received the parachute that John Sydney McCain III now rails about smacks of hypocrisy of the highest order.
