Before vote, McCain stresses 'suspension'

Posted: Monday, September 29, 2008 2:18 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
BEXLEY, Ohio - After "suspending" his campaign to return to Washington last week and help negotiate Congress's Wall Street bailout, McCain was back on the campaign trail today at a rally with his running mate where he criticized his opponent for not responding to the financial crisis in a similar fashion.

"I went to Washington last week to make sure that the taxpayers of Ohio and across this great country were not left footing the bill for mistakes made in Wall Street and evil and greed in Washington," McCain said.

Despite numerous earlier claims that this crisis was not a situation to be politicized, McCain then added, "it's a matter of record Senator Obama took a very different approach to the crisis our country faced. At first, at first he didn't want to get involved. And then he was "monitoring the situation." That's not leadership, that's watching from the sidelines."

McCain's remarks came hours before the bailout legislation failed on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.

Although McCain said last week - and repeated today - that it wasn't his style to "simply phone it in," he spent roughly five hours on Capitol Hill last Thursday (including a meeting with Obama at the White House), and less than two hours there on Friday before traveling to the debate. He then spent most of the day on Saturday making phone calls from his campaign headquarters in Virginia, a few miles away from the Hill.

One of McCain's closest advisors excused his candidate's absence from the Capitol on Saturday by telling reporters that McCain could "effectively do what he needs to do by phone."

Obama also visited his Senate office on Thursday but left town on Friday morning.

While accusing Obama today of not fighting hard enough for hardworking Americans, McCain put most of the blame for the current crisis on Washington insiders, a label he eschewed today despite boasting a resume that includes over 25 years of service in Washington.

"Times are tough for America," McCain said. "Times are tough for working families. Times are tough. They're paying the penalty for the greed and excess in Washington and the old boy network, a thing I have never been part of."

In reference to the debate, McCain said that Obama wasn't telling the American people the "truth" about a vote in the Senate that includes the expiration of the Bush tax cuts and a tax increase for Americans making $42,000 a year.

"He said at the time that this vote for higher taxes on the middle class was quote 'getting our nation's priorities back on track,'" McCain said today of Obama's budget vote. "Then something happened, amazing. On Friday night, he looked the American people in the eye and said it never happened.

In response, Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor issued this statement: "Senator McCain's angry diatribe today won't make up for his erratic response to the greatest financial crisis of our time. John McCain knows that the budget he's talking about didn't end up raising taxes on a single American, and the lie he told the American people today is all the more outrageous a day after he admitted that his health care plan will increase taxes on some families. When Senator Obama is President, no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase, and 95 percent of all workers and their families will get a tax cut."

Remember such sage words: The fundamentals of our economy are strong.
Perhaps John McCain will "suspend" his campaign in order to “save the day” and call off the VP debate to do so. I wonder which color the Gambling Maverick will pick this time to ride in on a horse of a different color?

Personality characteristics on file for review. These interesting Senate Exchange letters REVEAL the differing temperaments between Obama and McCain:

McCain once AGAIN plays follow to Barack’s lead.

My Friends: The McCain-Palin Victory California Leadership team is sponsoring the October 1 event at the Century Plaza Hyatt Regency in L.A. Tickets run as high as $250,000 for entrance to a host committee dinner and private reception; supporters can attend the general reception for $1,000 per person (or $2,500 per person for a limited edition "McCain-Palin CA" lapel pin).

You too can witness the greatest Sarah Palin DIS ever! The cashier at a Philadelphia Cheescake eatery asked Sarah Palin for her name. Following the exchange another customer responded, “that was PRICELESS.” Then she goes on to talk about Pakistan…

Great job McClain.  You sat around and tried to decide if another Hail Mary is in order.
John Kerry said it best on Fox:

"I mean, he said he was going to interrupt his campaign to come down and save the negotiations. Most people believe what he did was interrupt the negotiations to come down and save his campaign."
Yes, it is a matter of record that McCain made things worse in Washington because he wanted to inject politics into the process. And, today the culmination of his handy work is paying off as the DOW is dropping like a rock and the House just voted down the Bail-out. Republican leadership is pathetic.
McCain makes me so mad.  He went to Washington and sat there, didn't provide hardly any input, that's real progress now isn't it.  How can he stand there and talk this crap?  Obama at least was monitoring the situation and not being over reactive because his standings in the polls were down....McCain.  The only thing McCain accomplished was convincing his repub friends that the bill shouldn't pass.  Nice job on divisive politics there McShame....can always count on you and your "other maverick" for that kind of stuff.

Just think if we let McCain privatize social security....everyone would be broke.
Hey, McChicken...

1. You did NOT suspend your campaign.

2. Did you happen to notice what happened to the deal your campaign is now giving you credit for brokering?
"The fundamentals of our economy are sound" next, I am not for this bailout, next, I am for this bailout.I believe he has all the economic issues covered. Next topic.
It's just shocking that McCain is using his ineptitude over the past long weekend for political fodder.  Jjust shocking.  I don't think ANY of us saw it coming.  Paul, Amy, Pat, Ron, Pat, Eric, DV - any of you guys see this coming?

I feel so, so, so 'violated'.
So much for McCain's vaunted leadership skills - he couldn't even get a majority of his own Republicans to vote for this bill!  As to blaming Washington "Insiders" look in the mirror, John!
John McCain would know about suspension, right?

Why does he turn every evil thing he's done around on Obama?

PS, thanks for getting your GOP buddies to vote down the plan and screwing up the WORLD economy.  You guys are great.
HELL, NO, NO BAILOUT ---- UNLESS TAXPAYERS ARE GUARANTEED
RESPONSIBLE CEO'S & REGULATORS WILL BE PROSECUTED. ---------

BAILOUT, NO ..... PROSECUTION, YES !!!
Gov. Eliot Spitzer's eerie prediction on our current economic crisis, written Feb, 08!
"When history tells the story of the subprime lending crisis and recounts its devastating effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners, the Bush administration will not be judged favorably. The tale is still unfolding, but when the dust settles, it will be judged as a willing accomplice to the lenders who went to any lengths in their quest for profits. So willing, in fact, that it used the power of the federal government in an unprecedented assault on state legislatures, as well as on state attorneys general and anyone else on the side of consumers."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/13/AR2008021302783.html

(My take is that Lenders suckered average folks into mortgages which they could afford at first, then Lenders raised their monthly rate to an amount they could no longer afford!  Because there were no Regulations or Oversight, those houses were then foreclosed on and then re-sold again to some other unsuspecting victim, until the whole deck of cards has collapsed.  What is compelling, is that before the total collapse, CEO's pay themselves millions, sometimes billions as compensation pay for the said collapse!)

For instance, "In 2007, Wall Street's five biggest firms-- Bear Stearns, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley -   paid a record $39 billion in bonuses to themselves."  From ABC's Political Punch

Looks like mccain has egg on his face!Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
Simply put -- McCain "suspended" his campaign to get agreement on the bailout bill. That didn't work, did it? Nothing more needs to be said about his political ploy.
You can watch the sanity coming out of Johnny Boy one drip at a time. It's gone pass the point of saving. He once had so much promise and gave it away to the right wing devils.
Although McCain said last week - and repeated today - that it wasn't his style to "simply phone it in,"...One of McCain's closest advisors excused his candidate's absence from the Capitol on Saturday by telling reporters that McCain could "effectively do what he needs to do by phone."

Is this a preview of next Saturday's SNL?  I mean, really -- this could be a comedic sketch.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
And the BS and hypocrisy from this drama queen continues. Get the hook.
On Friday night, McCain said that his big contribution to the financial crisis was to get the House Republicans involved. Now they've voted against the bill and it has failed.

Nice job, John McCain. Thanks for -- nothing.
while I am asking direct questions - does anyone else feel that McCain injecting himself into the discussion probably CLOGGED up the process - rather than move it forward?  Especially since he had absolutely NO suggestions or recommendations.  Thinks that make you go, "hhhhhmmmmmmmmmm".
So is McBush saying that by showing real leadership he will get out in the filed with him and Palin and Find Bin Laden?? If so then the cranky old bastard get's my vote. If not then he needs to be quiet and stop lying it really is not appealling(cue alligator smile) .
Great job McLame. Your grandstanding "bipartisan" BS was exposed for the pandering joke that it was.
Doddering old fool, you are pathetic.
How does Caribou Barbie look now?
Here's a thought. Dump Palin and hire Tina Fey...she proved to be just as competent during the interview on SNL. In fact she did a better Palin than Palin!
McCain couldn't get republicans to back the bailout, and now the dow has tanked. Voters can thank McCain's interference, which bolstered house republican partisanship, for the destruction of their 401ks and their future of working until they die. Way to lead McCain.

John McCain and republicans, "we won't save the economy unless we lower capital gains tax so we and our friends can make more money."

Everyone should now see the quality of John "screw the middle class" McCain.
McCain lies, while the economy dies...

McCain's answer to the economic crisis - run around in circles like chicken little yelling the sky is falling the sky is falling!

That's leadership? I think not....

Obama's response to the crisis was dead on right!

McCain is such a sleazy, slimy, lying, drippy depends wearing old fartofaman!
Thanks to John's INVALUABLE help the bill passed in the house!!!  Oh...wait...no it didn't...
If McCain's suspension qualifies as an act of leadership, then why did a majority of his party vote against the bill.  his suspension was a waste of time and did not help pass the $700m Bill.  Lame.  McCain put your money where your mouth is and show us results, not rhetoric.
Please God... Please... put your hands on Barack Obama. Wake up the people of this nation...  the alternative is certain doom....
McCain sat there silently. Therefore you have no solution. Neither did he not something; but that was politicizing.
Breakdown, US doesn’t want it. The war has cost US  646 billion thus far. The new defense budget for 2009 tacks on that $68.6 billion Congress is about to pony up in the defense budget,
Iraq has a surplus and we don’t.
Fiorina may not be able to be seen role as a surrogate; she said it exactly right neither Palin nor McCain were qualified to run a major corporation. Guess what neither is she. Yet, it people like Carly (with her golden parachute which broke HP), Gramm, Davis, and others. Bush has bankrupted US to the tune of 700 billion borrowed money from china. What does US get?
Failed mortgages
600,000 lost jobs
No healthcare
Rising gas prices
Rising food prices

Yet, McCain with his 83 lobbyist ad Palin’s oil lobbyist will be more of the same.
Enough
No McCain/ Palin
Nobody, but Obama/Biden
Well, I guess John Bush McShame's trick didn't work.  Just look at the results of the vote.  What a lagh that this is a crisis of insiders.  Wasn't he there for over 35 years and wasn't George Bush there leading the parade for most of the last 8 years?  Whos is he trying to kid?  Shame on him.
McCAIN WHAT A MORON! COUNTRY FIRST! WHAT A JOKE !
Senator McCain, if you are not going to help, which clearly you are not, then shut up. Your input, either by phone, by microphone or in person is clearly not needed.

Signed--
A concerned citizen putting America first
McCain needs to finally shut up! Either get with the program or get out of the way!!

Americans know that this should not be partisan politics as usual!!
He can see the Capitol from his headquarters in Virginia.
I have lost almost all respect for McCain. Why is the "suspension" over given that there is still no resolution?? Next thing we know, he will call for the cancellation of the VP debate. Now THAT would be convenient!!

So the Repubs are saying they voted no because of a speech that the Speaker made? Are you f-ing kidding me? How disgusting. Now I don't claim to know if this bill is a good idea or not, but to vote no on something that you planned on voting yes for, something this important, because they didn't like a speech is the epitome of partisanship and the whole lot of them, Reps and Dems alike, who changed their intended vote because of a speech should be voted out of, or recalled from, office
This guy is amazing... He shows up in D.C. - then low and behold - the deal fails... then the world markets begin to fail. I sure hope my student loans will be there next term!

I frankly don't care about the baby boomer generation anymore... Y'all had your chance, and ya blew it! Selfishness and greed will define the baby Boomers in history.
Lie after lie after lie. John McCain has lost any respect he used to have, he's also lost his G$% D^&*( marbles as well.
This the republicans voting no because they did not like what the Speaker of the house had to say.

If you did not agree why wait until now.  Mccain said lets get a deal done, and the Republicans turn their back on him and the people.
Wow. With people more engaged than ever in the political process, why is McCain still acting like we're not watching what's happening and making up our own minds?

We know McCain didn't rush back to Washington (thanks, Letterman). We know he didn't truly suspend his campaign, as his people were all over the TV and his ads didn't stop. We know Obama called him first to suggest a joint statement on the economy, and was the one to caution that any action they took should take pains not to derail the progress already made. We know McCain twisted the President's arm -- a President who seemed quite content to let Paulson and Bernanke handle the crisis until McCain demanded a photo op -- to get a meeting at which he barely said a word, and certainly didn't lead. We've also known for months that the "$42 billion tax" lie on one of Obama's votes is just that: a lie, as the vote appropriated the money but didn't say where it would come from, with taxes just being one of many options.

Does he think our memories are that poor?
the (non) posting of comments recently has been disgraceful and is an insult to First Read readers. At least give notice when comments are not being accepted.
Good work, McCain - you guided the bailout effort with all the skill you demonstrated all those years ago flying them Navy jets.
This is one sorry politician. He's hoping nobody noticed his ineffective role on Friday and his sitting in a hotel room on the phone Saturday. The man has NOTHING to offer except childish tactics and posturing.

Obama is the only real man in this race.
The bailout bill failed because of petty partisan politics by the conservative lunatic fringe House repugnant ones.  This failure shows a complete failure of "Incompetent" McCain failing to show leadership within his own pathetic party.  He hid out in Washington and did nothing to get the House repugnant ones behind the bailout.  Now he tries to blame Obama for his own failure, typical of a repugnant one.

Obama had his party in line to support the bailout bill but McCain failed to get his own party in line.  The Democrats played bipartisan politics even though they had to support a total lame duck president who has been their enemy for 8 years.  The repugnant ones failed to support their lame duck because it was more important to play petty partisan politics.

I say let the bailout bill die and let Wall Street crash and burn.  Let the whole country see how poorly they have been represented by this self serving party of white collar criminals who have supported deregulation that caused this whole global financial crisis.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
I am so sick of these Republicans!!!!! Quit pointing fingers and vote!!! We know we will have to pay for it!! Come on people are going under in the real world! WHO CAN THE AMERICAN PEOPLE CALL ON TO HELP BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT IS TO BUSY PLAYING POLITICS!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH JUST STOP ALREADY AND PASS THIS BILL!!!!
Give me a break. Why even report when McCain makes such ludicrous comments as it was primarily him who politicized the bailout.

In fact, it could be argued he torpedoed the bill, by giving House Republicans political cover to start opposing it. While I'm not convinced that's the case - I think McCain was mostly a sideshow in all this - it certainly is notable that he said he was going to Washington to get this thing done, and despite whatever involvement he didn't or did have, as of right now its not getting done.
McCain is a real piece of work!
Economically, what part of Obama's tax plan don't blue collar, middle class voters understand?? At this point, I would advocate that people have to make a "pass" score on a test in order to vote; just like we require to get a driver's license. I guess that sounds "elitist", but if someone does NOT understand the issues, he or she does not need to cast a vote.
So what did you actually DO about the economic crisis, McCain? It was primarily members of YOUR party in the House that left the American people out to dry on this deal. The leadership cannot allow y'all to go home until you come up with an alternative, and get it passed. You and your fellow Repub House members are DISGUSTING!
enough bs from the anti-American middle class bush wannabe.  where's the truth?  where's the honesty?  GONE mccant traded the TRUTH  and HONESTY for the presidency and he will lose cause America is too smart for that bs.
BAIL OUT VOTE FAILED

THIS SOUNDS LIKE A JOB FOR SUPER MCCAIN!!!!!!!!!
