Obama on bailout failure

Posted: Monday, September 29, 2008 3:14 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
WESTMINSTER, Colo. -- Obama said he's confident a deal will be reached on a bailout plan, despite it failing in the House.

Explaining why he was delayed at the start of his event, he said in this town about 20 minutes outside Denver, "I was on the phone with Secretary Paulson as well as the Speaker of the House and the Congressional leaders, because they are still trying to work through this rescue package. And obviously this is a very difficult thing to do. It's difficult because we shouldn't have gotten here in the first place.

"We meet here at a time of great uncertainty for America. The era of greed and irresponsibility on Wall Street and in Washington has led us to a financial crisis as serious as any we have faced since the Great Depression. They said they wanted to let the market run free but instead they let it run wild, and in the process they trampled our American values of fairness, balance, and responsibility to one another. Now, because of speculators who gamed the system and regulators who looked the other way, your jobs, your life savings, and the stability of our entire economy is at risk."

"So we've been left with no good options. And today, Democrats and Republicans in Washington have a responsibility to make sure that an emergency rescue package is put forward that can at least stop the immediate problems that we have so we can begin to plan for the future."

"Now, as I said, this is a hard thing to do. And, you know, right now, Democratic and Republican leaders have agreed, but members have not yet agreed. And there are going to be some bumps and trials and tribulations and ups and downs before we get this rescue package done.

"It's important for the American public and for the markets to stay calm, because things are never smooth in Congress, and to understand that it will get done. We are going to make sure that an emergency package is put together because it is required for us to stabilize the markets and to make sure that when a small business person wakes up tomorrow morning, he's going to be able to make payroll. That your, that your 401k and all the planning you've done for your retirement, that that's still going to be there. That we're not going to be losing jobs at a faster clip than we're doing right now, so I'm confident that we are gonna get there, but it's gong to be a little rocky. It's sort of like flying into Denver. You know you're going to land, but it's not always fun going over those mountains."

"At first, just some brief remarks on the deal that was arrived at last night, or night before last. Because I think it's important for people to understand what's currently on the table. It may go through some more modifications. It's a plan that has improved a good deal from the time it was first introduced by the Bush administration. This administration started off by asking for a blank check of $700 billion to solve the problem. And I said absolutely not."

So is John McCain going to suspend his campaign again and head back to Washington to "fix" this?

What a mess this administration will be leaving us - I don't think the american people should be bailing out these robbers on Wall Street - we can barely make ends meet now -  what a sad day - thank you Mr. Bush -
What he said, again, is absolutely nothing.

And for Democrats to blame republicans for the bill's failure is proof of their inability to do simple arithmatic.  The Democrats could have passed this bill themselves, but they failed to do so.

That said, it is interesting that the bill seemed headed to passage before Speaker Pelosi opened her mouth and spewed forth more of her half-baked venom.  It is increasingly apparent that this woman couldn't lead a fire brigade to a burning school and accomplish a rescue.

As for Obama, maybe he should get off the phone for a few minutes and have a talk with house members of his OWN party.  He might accomplish something.

Or maybe not.  They'd never be able to figure out what it was he wanted them to do.
The bailout will happen not because it's right but because big money wants it and big money owns the weasels we call our representatives.
Someone who tells the TRUTH.
McShame is already tryng to spin this and blame Obama

He is such a JOKE
Barack Obama has shown calm wise bipartisan leadership throughout this while bailout legislation process.  He wisely worked behind the scenes and kept himself and presidential politics out of the process, unlike his opponent.

"Lame Duck" McCain has shown his complete lack of leadership in this bailout process by trying to abuse self serving petty partisan political gimmicks to make himself look more important than he was.  He has proven he's a lame duck even before he's elected and no amount of lipstick will change that quacking duck.

Barack has shown he's engaged and we can see by his opponent's silence now after the vote's failure who the real fraud is.  McCain tried to claim credit for other's work and now the American public will hear the truth from the media.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Obama has touted so many times that HE can bring people together, that he can negotiate with foreign leaders.  So, where was he during these negotiations? Since some Dems voted against bill, maybe the great Community Organizer could have convinced them!
It would be nice to have a link to show how each person in the congress voted on the bailout.
Obama may be the only guy with any politcal capital left. I'm wondering if he's going to have to personally twist the arms of those Democratic nay sayers.
Although this bill was not a good deal for Main Street, at least it's not a free-for-all for Wall Street, thanks to the Dems. I'm still disappointed that the Dow has tanked again this week due to failure of the bill to pass. The Repubs have been asleep at the wheel for so long they only take action (or in this case, inaction) when their jobs are in jeopardy. Had this not been an election year, they would be continuing the same old lame politics that got us in this mess in the first place.

Get back to work, Congress and put together another package so that our economy can have a chance of getting back on track. If this continues, all of us will be in the soup lines. If no deal can be reached, then what? The alternative ain't very pretty and the USA could go the way of the Soviet Union.
Now is the time for Democrats to go full speed ahead on their own plan and forget even trying to negotiate with Republicans.  Throw the Republicans out of the room and make a vote along party lines if necessary.  Compromising with the minority party in the house didn't work, so forget 'em.
We need to get these nay Democrats voters to change their status and say that atleast Democrats are united on this issue.  Who cares how the Republicans are saying.  You need to be unanimous within the Democratic Party.  Obama should take charge of his Obama Democrats and tell Clinton Democrats and other Democrats to vote for this bill.
Elect Senator Barack Obama.  The next four years will be about the hardest any president could handle and may be destined to be a one term administration.  There is no way the curmudgeon old man McCain will be able to handle the job at hand.  And anyone who thinks - should McCain die in office, his vp Palin could handle the disastrous situation....they need to go back to elementary school or have their heads examined.
The American people are very unhappy and this is very, very very bad news for McCain.  It is bad news for all incumbants.

Our leader, Obama, has five weeks before elected and 113 days before he will take office.  Bush and McCain and the Republican party are a disgrace and do not deserve our trust or confidence. Phil Graham, you too get credit for this mess. As Obama said,  ENOUGH!!
Our system of free enterprise turned into greed enterprise and we are reaping the benefits.  Our devotion to $ has left us in a financial mess.  I continue to wonder how much $ is enough.  A person can only eat so much food, sleep in one bed, drive one car, stay in one house.  How much do these people need to live?  Greed is an understatement.  Our Christian one nation, under God should be ashamed!
Looking strategically at Obama's campaign alone, as in the debate, Obama is not outlining the actual economic problems that are confronting Americans. We need actual numbers of job losses. We need actual numbers of foreclosures. We need actual numbers of local banks that could 'potentially' go under. We need actual numbers of the unemployment rate. If he wants to make the case, he needs to outline the seriousness of this problem with hard facts.

In response to how our economy affects our national security: Every American can bet that terrorists the world over are looking at this situation very, very carefully, along with other competing countries and markets; who are both looking to see how it will affect their own market but also for the opportunity to raise their own status in the world. If we were to be attacked now, in the form of a suitcase, we may not ever recover. A very scary proposition but one that needs to be explained, in turn offering Obama the chance to cast 'real' vision in this time of uncertainty.

no joe, no bo, nj (Sent Monday, September 29, 2008 3:26 PM)

Yes, no joe, they COULD have, but why SHOULD they?  The repugs did this so why shouldn't they take some of the ownership?  That is what Nancy P. was trying to say.  Grow up guys, and take some ownership of this sinking ship that you drove into the rocks.  Just like the repugs, they get their hands all dirty and then they want someone else clean them up...like us, the taxpayers.

Once again, McCain and Obama display their leadership qualities in a crisis.  And once again, for this voter, the cool, steady hand of Obama wins my vote.
I say give the american people who put them if office the 70 billion!  We would pay 30% tax which would go back to our government.  The American people pay your houses off, stick in the bank, pay off student loans.  Problem solved!  CLH MISSOURI
