Biden to speak at son's deployment

WILMINGTON, Del. -- As Biden actively prepares for Thursday’s vice presidential debate in St. Louis, the imminent deployment to Iraq of his eldest son, Beau, is also weighing on his mind this week.

Beau Biden, who joined the Delaware National Guard in 2003, is being called to active duty with the 261st Signal Brigade on Friday. It’s the first time the unit is being sent to Iraq. Lt. Col. Len Grattieri, public affairs officer for the state National Guard, confirmed that the Delaware senator will speak at the deployment ceremony in Dover.

“He usually addresses every unit that we deploy,” Grattieri said. “What he usually talks about is the current situation in Iraq or Afghanistan, depending on where the unit is going, and wishes them good luck in their deployment.”

Biden is expected to return to Delaware immediately after Thursday’s debate. As was the case when Gov. Sarah Palin spoke at her son’s deployment, there is sensitivity about his presence, given Biden’s status as the vice presidential nominee. But Grattieri said he does not expect any changes to the format of Friday’s event.

“It’s certainly not a political rally. It’s to support the troops,” he said.

Typically Biden, as the longest-serving member of the Delaware congressional delegation, would speak third in the program, following Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and the National Guard adjutant general.

Beau Biden, who is also Delaware’s attorney general, would be expected to serve the 12 month deployment. In the event that Biden becomes vice president, Grattieri said that the Army would make decisions about whether to recall his son for security considerations.

The campaign has been reluctant to discuss any details of Beau’s deployment. Biden press secretary David Wade did say, however, that family time is “very important this week.”

Biden has spent most of today at the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Wilmington, where the campaign has set up a mock debate stage. Gov. Jennifer Granholm is playing the part of Palin.

Too bad Tina Fey couldn't be Palin's stand-in while Biden practices, slow motion grounders.

All Joe needs to do during the debate is give short answers, then turn to Palin and watch her eyes dart down to the left before every word that comes out of her mouth. Have fun Sarah.
Seeing a child off to fight in the lying Bush crime family war is sooo disheartening.  May G_d bless you, one and all.

OBAMA/BIDEN, 2008!
The Bidens are one helluva family.
They hold such a high regard of service to the People of the United States of America...
I am in awe.
They're American Heroes.
What?  Tina Fey isn't playing the part of Palin for Joe's prep?  I suppose they couldn't do that - Joe would be laughing so hard he wouldn't be able to get anything done.
Godspeed, Joe, Beau, and the others deploying with Beau.

How much is the bill going to change before the republicans vote for it?  My guess it not very much.  Today was just a bunch of political grandstanding with the the economical future of the country at stake!  For those that have portfolios, how much did you lose today?  How much worse might it get if we do nothing?

I get tired of people coming on here and spewing incorrect facts.  These are the vote counts with percentage.  The dems got their majority to the table and the repubs played politics.

The dems have just as much to lose for voting for this lousy bill, but our options as a country are limited at this point...

GOOD LUCK BEAU COME HOME SAFE
Let me get this right, when Governor Palin addressed the deployment of her son's national guard unit, it was called a political stunt.  However, it was omitted that she is the governor of the state and it was in that capacity that she spoke.  Biden has nothing to do with the Deleware National Guard but now he wants to speak at their deployment.  I am willing to bet the liberal press will cover it and think its great.
Go Joe and Beau - we are praying for your safety.
^^^^

I love how the Repubs are blaming Pelosi for the failed vote.  Dems do NOT have an OVERRIDING majority AND it wasn't OUR bailout; but Bush's.

McCain couldn't lead his way out of a paper sack with two hands and a flashlight.

Low Information Voters will believe that Pelosi's supposed partisan rancor on the floor prior to the vote is to blame.

Repubs will have to make greater concessions for Main St. if they really want the bailout to occur.
PS.  Biden should be using Tina Fey as the stand in - although she is more informed than Palin on the issues.
Stay safe, come home safe Beau, for your Dad.
Godspeed, Beau, and come back safe and sound.
Godspeed, Beau, and come back safe and sound.
God speed Beau. My own friend just came back from Iraq yesterday. President Obama will bring you folks home- in victory and honorably..and will never misuse you our protectors again. NEVER!
Godspeed Beau, come back safe and sound.  In the meantime, we will take care of your Dad and vote him into office on 11/4!!!!

On a lighter note, I agree that Tina Fey should be the stand-in for your Dad's debate rehearsal!!  Priceless.
Well I wish all our troops a safe return home.

I will NOT be voting for Obama for president. However if it was Joe Biden for president he would have my vote in a heartbeat.
God Bless Beau with his deployment to Iraq, our thoughts and prayers go with him.
Senator Biden will address his son's unit as he apparently does every unit that is being deployed and wish them good luck.
This is not a photo op for Joe Biden, it's a genuine concern for those troops....unlike Sarah Palin a while ago as it was set to be done on Sept 11th....shameful!!
Joe Biden is smart, funny, honest, intelligent and a very REAL person who really cares for the working class.
Sarah Palin on the other hand is just a well scripted speech reader with a caustic manner and very litle knowledge on anything!!!
This country is worth more than John Mccain and Sarah Palin....real leadership, command of the issues, concern for the working class is what is required and that is what Senator Obama and Joe Biden will bring to the White House.

Joe Biden is won terrific Senator and will make an excellent Vice President.

Apparently you only read the headline and not the article.  Addressing the deploying National Guard troops is something he has always done.

Don't judge a book by its cover.
I'm going watch the debate on a 1929 TV that Biden refered to.  Maybe I'll see FDR on it as well.
Robert in Sacramento... did you even read this article?  Check out the third paragraph.
Let's stop closing our eyes and believing that if we pick good leaders, we can ignore the world around us. To me it seems like we want to worship our leaders so we can put our lives in their hands and then not think about politics for four more years. Obama will bring our troops home if we demand it. Bush would have brought them home if we'd demanded it, I mean camped out at the White House for months on end. He would have ended it. But we didn't and he didn't. Hume said that force is always on the side of the governed. We're lazy. Simple as that.
hey Robert from Sacramento, CA... i guess you didnt read the part where the natl gaurd officer says biden ALREADY speaks to virtually every unit they deploy.... why dont you neocons ever pay attention to details????
