First thoughts: The next generation

*** A new generation? A brand-new NBC/WSJ/MySpace poll is further evidence that the number of new voters who turn out on Election Day could very well decide the presidential contest. According to the survey, new and lapsed voters (those who didn't vote in 2004) back Obama over McCain by a 2-to-1 margin, 61%-30%. If you take the Bush (62 million) and Kerry (59 million) vote totals from 2004, assume turnout increases by 20 million additional voters (about what it did in 2004), and assume Obama wins these additional voters 2-to-1, then Obama would best McCain nationally by more than three million voters, 72.4 million to 68.7 million. But if turnout increases by just 10 million, then the numbers become Obama 65.7 million, McCain 65.3 million -- a virtual tie. “An Obama victory could very well depend on getting these folks to the polls,” says NBC/WSJ co-pollster Neil Newhouse (R). What’s more, we’ve done the math that a 20% turnout increase in swing states like Colorado, Florida, Ohio, and Virginia can flip these red states from red to blue. What has to worry the Republicans is that this is a whole generation of new voters who are leaning Democratic. What does that mean for the GOP’s future? It was a whole new generation of young voters who grew up with Reagan who helped bring in a Republican Congress and two terms for George W. Bush. This generation of new voters grew up Clinton, could they be what puts the Democrats on a 20-year power trajectory?

Video: NBC Deputy Political Director Mark Murray gives his first read on a new set of polls in the battleground states of Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, which show Obama with a post-debate bump.

*** Obama’s challenge: But one potential sign of worry for Obama in this NBC/WSJ/MySpace poll is that these new/lapsed voters aren’t as interested in the election as your average voter is. In the poll, 49% of them say they’re very interested, but that’s compared with 70% of all registered voters who said this in the most recent NBC/WSJ survey. “Obama still has a significant challenge to get [these new voters] to the polls,” Newhouse observes. One note about the methodology in the poll: It was conducted partly online and partly by phone, the online portion was a poll of a panel survey. That said, the results are consistent with our normal crosstabs from our NBC/WSJ poll.

*** Time to change the subject? The campaign trail returns to Capitol Hill, as Biden, McCain, and Obama all come back to the Senate to vote tonight on the bailout measure. Isn't it interesting how eager both Obama and McCain are to see this rescue package pass? Sure, the two want it passed because they believe the country is in a financial crisis. But both also want the issue out of the way. Neither seems comfortable dealing with this issue (see last week's debate), and both appear to be tired of it taking up space on the trail. For McCain, it gets in the way of reform, experience, and tax and spending issues that he'd like to see at the forefront. As for Obama, while his campaign has certainly benefited politically from this mess, he would rather be talking about health care, Bush, and overall change.

*** More good polling news for Obama: A new round of Quinnipiac polls for Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania -- taken before Friday’s debate and then after it -- shows Obama leading McCain in all three states and hitting the 50% mark in the post-debate surveys. Before the debate, the polls had Obama up in Florida by six points (49%-43%), up in Ohio by seven (49%-42%), and up in Pennsylvania by six (49%-43%). And Obama increased his lead slightly after the debate: He’s up eight in Florida (51%-43%), eight in Ohio (50%-42%), and 15 in Pennsylvania (54%-39%). A couple of points to make here: 1) This is more evidence that Obama appears to have won Friday’s debate perception-wise, despite many analysts declaring it a draw; and 2) This poll, in addition to a new Franklin & Marshall poll that has Obama up seven in the Keystone State, compels us to move Pennsylvania back to Lean Obama in our next battleground map.

*** In need of a new game-changer: Indeed, as a slew of new state and national polls are suggesting, McCain is now behind. It's no longer fair to call this a dead-even race; it's moving in Obama's direction. The question is: How does McCain stop this momentum? The fastest way is with the upcoming VP debate -- and it's not about Palin, it's about Biden. Palin's No. 1 job may be to attempt to bait Biden into a gaffe. They need Biden to step in it and become the weekend story in some form. It may be too big of a slog to try and resuscitate Palin at this VP debate. But if the campaign can make Biden seem like a net-negative for Obama, then maybe they blunt the Palin issues. It's not going to be easy. Biden has been one of the more disciplined debaters during the primary season, and it's one of the under-remembered aspects of his unsuccessful candidacy. How many times in this race, by the way, have we seen the worm turn just as it seems one candidate is running away with things?

*** 34 days later: Today, we’re just 34 days out until Election Day. And given that mark, NBC/WSJ co-pollster Neil Newhouse reminds First Read to consider everything that has happened in the preceding 34 days: Obama accepted the Democratic nomination at Invesco; McCain made Palin his running mate; Hurricanes Gustav and Ike hit the Gulf Coast; the US unemployment rate hit its highest mark in seven years; Lehman Brothers went bankrupt and Merrill Lynch was bought out; Bush called for a $700 billion bailout package; Ted Stevens became the first sitting US senator to go on trial since 1981; McCain and Obama debated; and the House defeated the bailout package. “If the next 34 is like the last 34, we're in for quite a ride,” Newhouse says.

*** Bubba watch: For the first time today, Bill Clinton hits the campaign trail for Obama. He’ll be in the battleground of Florida, holding rallies in Orlando and Fort Pierce. Of course, given his recent tepid praise of Obama and effusive comments about McCain, Clinton’s events today will receive a bit more scrutiny. And they come just as the McCain campaign unveiled a new TV ad yesterday that uses a quote from Clinton that appears to blame Democrats (in part) for the current economic mess.

*** More wolf ads: Without much fanfare and despite Obama’s earlier appeal for them to stay out of the presidential race, Democratic interest groups have been cranking up their TV activity -- and they’re targeting Palin. One of the least talked about, yet most provocative, ads this cycle has been the Defenders of Wildlife spot that blasts Palin for supporting aerial hunting of wolves. The ad had been running in the battlegrounds of Florida, Michigan, and Ohio, and now the AP reports that Defenders of Wildlife will extend that buy to Colorado, Virginia, Wisconsin, and even St. Louis in time for Thursday’s VP debate. Query: Where are the Republican ads? We've seen some on Fox News and other cable outlets, but nothing for swing voters.

*** On the trail: McCain stumps in Kansas City, MO before heading to a fundraiser in Los Angeles. Obama campaigns in La Crosse, WI. And Michelle Obama hits events in Boulder, CO and Kansas City, MO.

Sudden thoughts and second thoughts

Why do people refer to foreign and national security policies as McCain’s strength when his positions are wrong?  Shouldn’t that be a weakness?  He claims he has ‘the record’, but his record is wrong.  He claims he has the experience, but his judgment and track record are wrong.

Why is the MSM setting Palin up for success tomorrow night?  Don’t lower the bar for her.  Don’t lower the expectation game for her.  Let her stumble.  Let her make mistakes.  Just stop telling us she only has to survive to be successful.  If she is as good a debater as many are claiming, prove it.  Just don’t declare her a winner because of style.  I hate that.

Is Election Night going to be over quickly?  I can foresee Obama being extremely close to the 270 mark before polls close in the Pacific Time zone if some of the trends hold true.  There are plenty of websites where you can play the numbers game yourselves.  Don’t settle for what pundits indicate.  Go by your gut feelings, base your predictions on what you have seen or heard, and plot out the Electoral Map as you see it.  Do you think the pundits have your home state pegged correctly?

I hope and pray Obama has another mega event after the last debate; something in the 70,000 plus range.  Security must be a bear for these events.

Does anyone know if by law early voting results can only be posted as soon as polls close in that state?  I was told the early numbers you see at the closing of polls represent the tally of absentee ballots or early votes cast.  Aren’t you dying to know what the early voting in Ohio indicates?
http://twocanpete.blogspot.com/
I've been saying this for months! The new voters that are most likely to vote for Obama are the same voters who only have cell phones therefor are not being contacted by the polling companies! It will be a landslide for Obama next month.
A brand-new NBC/WSJ/MySpace poll is further evidence that the number of new voters who turn out on Election Day could very well decide the presidential contest.
*******************************************************

Don't the experts say this EVERY election year?  I'm hopeful that this year they are correct, but I seem to remember P-Diddy heading up a "Vote or Die" campaign in 2006 targeting the youth vote -- and it failing miserably.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Let's be honest. Will Republicans even let these people vote (in Red states)?

How many ballots will be tossed.

The higher Obama climbs in the polls the lower McCain's ethics will sink.
I'm stunned by these poll numbers. I get the feeling that the majority of people in this country do not want to see the Republicans at the helm for a long long time. Thank goodness.

They have destroyed everything they have touched by sheer ignorance and inability to govern. If they don't like government, then they shouldn't be taking a paycheck with all the perks that go along with it.
Indeed the next 34 days will be a guaranteed 'ride'.

The only 'game changer' in McCain's arsenal is to replace Palin.  It was predicted by posters on this site more than two weeks ago.

I say to all of you in 'early voting' states, do what you can to vote now to free up the booth time on election day.
I sure hope that all the new registered voters actually vote so we can have a change election that Obama wins.  Hopefully people will be mad at the incumbent repugnant ones in the White House and Congress for screwing up our country and economy.

So good that the battleground states are going to Obama more and more.  It's now Barack-tober and only another month before we put "Bush Hugger" McCain out of our misery.

I'm getting tired of hearing "Sinner" Sarah say she heard Biden's speeches since she was in 2nd grade, when she was that young she didn't listen to Senate speeches, just another lie.  She couldn't even name one magazine she read lately.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Let me tell you that in Michigan, in all white areas, you see nothing but Obama/Biden signs with a scattering of a couple of McCain signs.  As an ex-autoworker, white and a women, we would be nuts to even consider voting McCain and his "a few eggs short of a carton" VP candidate.  They're stands on worker and women's issues are the worst since Strom Thurmond! Wake up workers and all women!  Obama and Biden have the best records that fight for all of us--not just Wall Street and the Oil companies which McCain coddles to this day!  That's why the polls are changing.  Everyone is getting this wake-up call!  Obama/Biden 08!
After thursdays debate the numbers will change further, Stay tuned for the BIG BANG and a new universe!
To the Republicans that elected George W. Bush...Are you still loyal to your political party or your country? Loyalty to parties has gotten this country in trouble before, and now we appear to be in the same boat again.
To the Independents that voted for Nader...Are you still loyal to furthering your political party or are you loyal to your country?
The time has come to get your loyalty in order. I for one have never been loyal to a political party...I examine each candidate for myself. No political party will ever decide my vote.
"It serves always to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble the Public Administration. It agitates the Community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms; kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another."
-From George Washington's Farewell Address-
with the national humane society, for the first time in their history, endorsing a presidential candidate - sen. barack obama; just what would those republican ads look like - vote for mccain/palin we believe in every americans right to carry an AK 47 onto a helicopter and shot wolves?
American Voter, back in 2006, the GOP thought they would be able to survive another election cycle, while giving Cowboy George EVERYTHING he asked for. However, the Voter had a very different idea. We voted the GOP out enmasse, along with their idea of how Our Government should function.Cowboy George called it right"A Thumping".

This November, American Voter, let's show the GOP what a THUMPING is.Better, let's show them by opening up a can of WHOOPASS on them this time. Evidently, the GOP learned nothing from the losses they suffered in 2006.

This Financial episode is just the Icing on the Cake of Failed Policy after Failed policy coming from the GOP. Trickle down economic's has brought this Great nation to it's knee's.

Ask yourself, How much more of this can your family take before you finally say "ENOUGH" ?

We can't stand 4 more year's of the last 8 year's
Obama supporters - don't take any good news for granted...it's not called the October Surprise for nothing!  We need to stay on our toes, and not let the McLie&Smear Campaign do what GOP's do best...scare everyone in the last weeks before the election into thinking that if you vote Dem., it'll be the end of the world! And, if you want to do your part, connect with these new younger voters, get them excited about voting this year, and, if need be, give them a ride to the polls!  Living in NY, it's pretty much in the bag here for Obama...but still, if you live in the battleground states, you need to do your part!
Chuck

No need to think any further about "the worm turning". Obama has the lead, will increase the lead and will not give up the lead. Nov. 4 could just be a landslide for Obama. Especailly when we know he will have one hell of a ground game going on election day to get out the vote. Some recent predictions give Obama 330+ electoral votes. The fat lady is certainly singing.
Palin loses Dog Lover vote..
The 527's need to stay out of this. Leftor right, they are mean-spirited, off-target and miss their perceptions of what motivates voters. Just let Axelrod and Plouffe run the campaign and send money to Obama. Everybody else just shut the hell up.
Is it any wonder Obama leads in the polls? The media is ignoring that his two financial advisors (Gaines and Johnson) led Fannie and Freddie into the toliet. The media is ignoring Obama ties to ACORN - which was nothing more then an Affirmitive Action program for home ownership - they came up with the NINJA loan system. NINJA is No Income - No Job - No Assets. Then you wonder why we're in the mess we are today. Topping this off, Gwen Ifill is writing a book that is very favorable to Obama. In it she praised Obama up and down for everything he's done (okay, it's a thin book). Tomorrow nights moderator for the VP debates? Gwen Ifill. And somehow the MSM thinks this is fair.
Ever since McSame crash landed his plane in washington last week we have been hearing about his leadership and putting country first but yet his ads say something quite different....not to mention the 24 hours it took him to get from NYC to Dc last week after he declared himself the 'bailout leader'...what a doofus
So what new trick will McCain try?  Kicking Palin to the curb?  Nope that would actually make some sort of sense if he replaced her with some economic wiz kid of either sex.

No doubt it will be lies and innuendo about Obama not truth or good ideas of his own.  McCain sees everything as a war destroy the other side, victory or defeat.  Standby for something from the Rove book of smears and dirty politics.
the electoral map is looking quiet beautiful this morning.
There can only be one.

Here, at MSNBC, they only want The One. Out here, in the real world, we want The Maverick!
Oh yeah, the newly registered and young voters will be there. That's a fact! They are tired of the "blame game" and the mess the Republicans made.
Senator Obama has inspired loads of young people to get invloved with this election.....his grass roots movement is paying off.
I think a lot of these polls don't even take into account a lot of the younger voters....they have more interest than they are being given credit for.
You must remember it's their future at stake here as well.
Curious how the Obamatots feel that the Obama campaign took $800,000 of YOUR money and gave it to a corrupt organization like ACORN?  How do you feel about the fact Obama was a "trainer" for ACORN?  Teaching people how to cheat. Follow the Communist Saul Alinksky "Rules for Radical":  the ends justify the means. How do you feel that Obama was legal counsel for ACORN when they've been charged with voter fraud?     And, how do you feel that the housing bill last summer gave $500,000 of TAXPAYER DOLLARS to a group like ACORN that engages in criminal activity?  And, how do you feel that the Dems tried to sneak 20% of any bailout profits to ACORN.  Excuse me, I thought they didn't want the taxpayers to have to "pay" in the bailout, but they'll give OUR money to a sleazy group.

And, here we are again, Obama has strong ties and associations with another corrupt, sleazy group.  Enough is enough. This man is dangerous.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems as though you "buried the lede" - Senator Obama has taken double digit leads in battleground states - can we get some coverage please?

Lord knows you were RELENTLESS with your "why isn't he leading by more" coverage.

Come on First Read - Battleground polls trump Myspace polls, EVERYTIME!

P.S. YAY!
Here's my hope for the future....

If all the Obama supporters who threaten to leave the Country if McCain is elected -- live up to their word.
I realize that not ALL of us are thrilled about this trend.  Some are ecstatic; others are wringing their hands.  But let's try to remember we are ALL Americans.  To differ in political opinions is part of what makes us the envy of the world.

I am cautiously optimistic... but we still have a long way to go before November 4th. And it's called the "October Surprise" for a reason!

Best Advice: Please remain respectful to those who only want to create "smear & fear."  Not all advocates of Obama or McCain will be civil. You'll never get a 100% Red or Blue election.  People: NOTHING is more important than finding Common Ground!

"What a country!!"  (i/m/o T. Russert)
Palin wil no doubt attack Biden for being a "Liberal" and he must say that without so-called "Liberals we would not have Social Security, Medicare, etc.
With all of these 'game changers' (aka distractions), I am simply amazed that the long view is wholly lost (though I know it's naive to be amazed in this way).

McCain engaged in contemptibly unethical conduct with what was then the biggest financial scandal to hit the country--the S&L bailout and his role of one of the Keating Five.  His response to his Earnest John Gimme Another Chance plea was to jump wholesale into the financial deregulation of the Gingrich congress which disassembled any semblance of regulation by the 1996 telecom dereg act and the 1999 Glass-Stegall repeal.  Riding high on the hog (not the lipsticked pig), this led not only to the obscene Enron affair, which was muffled only by his banty-rooster call to empty the national treasury by borrowing gazillions of dollars from the Chinese and Indians to start the war in Iraq---which has, of course, made the country more unsafe than it has ever been---defining safety in all ways.  Now, after admitting he doesn't know squat about the economy in January when debating Romney (where McCain interestingly took a jab at Romney's wealth, while McCain has never disclosed his own via his apparently sticky-fingered wife), he waddles to the podium less than two weeks ago and declares that "the fundamentals of our economy are strong."  This, from the 'maverick' who was so scared of losing office that he has named as his replacement a younger, female version of Ted Baxter.  (She claims to be Joe Six Pack.  I know Joe Six Pack and like Joe Six Pack.  But I want him working on my car, building my roads, and maybe being my neighbor.  He has NO business appointing federal judges, directing the generals of the world's mightiest army, or conducting affairs of state.)  He of the thirteen cars and seven homes who has (and does) shill for the richest lobbies in America has NO business running for this office, let alone holding it.  "Patirotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."  Mr. McCain, unwrap yourself from my flag.
Chuck come one guy - you have to know that there will not be a virtual tie in any way.

You forgot to deduct the amount of people that voted for Bush in 04, but will not vote for another republican in 08.

You guys know that the Republicans have lost millions of voters because of George Bush and they have moved to become Democrats/Independents, etc.

I can not under stand why you guys continue to try and find ways or make up stories to make the election seem close.

It is not - and these stories will not convince U.S. that it is.

We all know that Barack Obama will win this election and he will win it big.

And as far as getting people to the polls - you media folks got that wrong as well.

They will get there - you can bet your lives on it.

Plane, train or automobile, it's going to happen.

Also, Chuck..I am amazed when I work around town and literally hear teenagers talking to others about politics and believe me they are engaged and pumped up about this election.  Just like any other American.

You media folks need to open your eyes and walk the streets of America and ask the average Joe/Jane what they think..

Rest assure each passing day Barack Obama is winning hearts, minds and votes.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Please do a good, CONTROLLED, job on Palin tomorrow. Keep the momentum going in the right direction, sir... 34 days until I can sleep better at night, knowing the country will be in good, level-headed hands. Obama/Biden 08 & 12
Today We are all "White Fangians"

Jack London must be crying in Heaven...

Palin must be pandering the gun lobby vote again...... as VP she can Cobra's with miniguns..
...and another thing:

Who owns John McCain? Let's get to work on the lobbying stories by names and numbers.  And, financial disclosure from the missus.

And, while we're at it---who owns Sarah Palin?  If she and Dude are such Joe Six Packs, let's take a look at the tax returns.  How can she not disclose that?

Everyone knows that the money must be followed.  Get on it, folks.
My three older children are now of legal age and voting in their first election. Their generation carries with them a color blindness that was not seen in past generations of new voters, thank goodness. They also grew up in a home with a parent who was very vocal about what we should be doing as a nation to help people from the bottom up. The top has already got what they need in excess. I don't tell them who to vote for but they sure are influenced by me. It's Barack Obama for me as well as them. I never had a real issue with John McCain, he just doesn't get what the majority of us are up against. I don't think he ever will, he's a wealthy republican. I would have voted for a republican when I was younger, now I just realize they will vote along party lines and that in essence is against what I believe is right for the rest of the world.
To: Hillary Supporter for McCain (Sent Wednesday, October 01, 2008 9:55 AM)

Like wise I'm sure when Obama/Biden takes it?
Smoke got in my eyes, wait a second.I don't know where you have been Carrie,Obama has been talking about the ecnomoy for 18 months, you see he thinks it's a important topic.I would think buy now you would have seen this is part of his platform and some thing that he cares a great deal about.I think Obama has stayed out front on this issue while McCain seems lost in space.
Maverick that's it I'll dub myself the maverick...or how about Crash.  Naw.  Doesn't have a ring.  I know Ladies Man.  Yea, I like that or better yet how about Big Bucks Ladies Man.  Who cares what my first wife thinks about it.  Maverick?  Hmmm, what the hell does that mean anyway.  What would Chas Keating think of it?  Who cares.  I don't care what anyone thinks or needs.
I have been stunned at the bias in the media from all of the MSNBC pundits. Does anyone notice that nobody on MSNBC speaks of the fact that Obama's poll numbers are usually higher than the actual vote turns out? Obama is coasting hoping that the MSNBC Obama campaign team of Mika,Olberman,Matthews,Mitchell,Robinson,Todd,Fineman,Heilman,Barnicle,Odonnel and the list goes on and on, will carry him over the line and we will end up losing another year and Todd and the MSNBC crew will be looking at each other with tears in there eyes.
Go to Real Clear Politics for a good view of all the state and national polls.  Chuck Todd pulls his electoral vote count out of his a$$.
Goodness - from the looks of the polls and the comments here -- Republicans are running scared.  They are still trying for the "scared and stupid" vote and from the looks of the comments above we still have 4 or 5!!!

"scared and stupid" deserve scared and stupid.

Hopefull and Intelligent deserve Hopefull and Intelligent.

Its your vote!!!!!
I think Democrats can start to win the post-debate spin wars already by avoiding attacks on Governor Palin, focusing instead on the top of the ticket and his disastrous economic and foreign policies.

http://enough2008.blogspot.com/2008/09/democrats-should-steer-clear-of-siren.html
Bill Clinton should stay out of this entire election period.  Bill holds grudges, he will harm or ruin Hillary's political carer,  Bill is losing a LOT of respect that he once had--'he is bad, sad news.
If what you say is true and the new young voters will vote for Obama, they do not have the same philosphy as the older generation of freedom to the people.  Most younger voters have been indoctrinated by the Socialist professors and others in colleges and universities around the country.  What will happen is after they vote in Obama as President and find out that their lives are being radically controlled by the state, they will change their minds and probably never want to vote Democrat again.
The Democrats have to keep up the pressure on ways to never allow these people to vote any other way.  This would then be the downfall of the Constitution and will eventually result in a Civil War.
It is indeed time for a new generation.  Obama will navigate the complex and fast-changing issues of the 21st century; McCain would keep the country on hold.
God help us!!! McShame has lost his mind and integrity, well I don’t think he had any to begin with!!!! And McPalin please media stop giving her a free ride she is a heartbeat away from being president of the United States close your eyes and image that!!!! oh my god!!!
Regarding the new and especially the young voters:  if these new, young voters actually go vote it could be a landslide for Obama.  If they get busy, or distracted, or lazy, it will be very close or McCain could win.  It really is up to these young people who our next President will be, which is good since they will be the ones who face most of the consequences of the policies of the next president.  Young people--you decide!
***Mcain***Palin***08
Pat in NY and David Nepveu, you are right, we need to stay strong and get the kids to the polls. This is their future more than ours, their parents and grandparents. We need to make sure they have their voter registration in order and that they bring ID. We need to register new voters and help them see this election is for US, all of US. This time the Republicans will stop at nothing to win, so diligient voters need to make sure if you are in an area with high young/student or minority population, that there is someone there to protect these young or minority voters' rights if questioned. There will be Republican poll watchers at all large stations to contest voters' rights--volunteer now to be an election day worker-- in whatever way you can! In Virginia, we are ecstatic that we might be blue this year, come on America, we can do this!
Why not change the name of msnbc to obama. It's like all the empty suit "faces" on msnbc are afraid obama might pass gas and they won't have their head in the right place to smell it.
