New ad brings up 'rape kit' charge

Defenders of Wildlife isn't the only Democratic-leaning interest group that's airing a TV ad targeting Palin.

Planned Parenthood tells First Read it will begin running a new ad on Thursday that brings up the fact that Wasilla, while Palin was mayor there, charged rape victims or their insurers for emergency-room rape kits.

The ad -- which Planned Parenthood says will run in the markets of St. Louis (MO), Madison (WI), and DC/Northern Virginia (VA) -- begins with a testimonial from a rape victim. "I just didn’t think it would happen to me," she says. "I was drugged and raped." Then an announcer states, "Under Mayor Sarah Palin, women like Gretchen were forced to pay up to $1,200 for the emergency exams used to prosecute their attackers," adding: "In the Senate, John McCain voted against legislation to protect women from these same heartless policies."

According to our friends over at Politifact, while Wasilla had such a rape kit policy while Palin was mayor, there is no evidence that she explicitly endorsed it. "Wasilla clearly had the policy. Bloggers have portrayed it as a heartless rule seeking money from rape victims, but they have neglected to mention that the policy seems to have been aimed more at getting money from insurance companies than from victims. We can’t find that Palin ever commented on the policy, pro or con. But as mayor, she indirectly endorsed it by approving city budgets that relied on the revenue."

The script:
Gretchen: I just didn’t think it would happen to me. I was drugged and raped.
Announcer: Under Mayor Sarah Palin, women like Gretchen were forced to pay up to $1,200 for the emergency exams used to prosecute their attackers.
In the Senate, John McCain voted against legislation to protect women from these same heartless policies.
Gretchen: That is something to me that’s unthinkable. It scares me to death.
VO: Planned Parenthood Action Fund is responsible for the content of this advertising and urges you to get the facts.

*** UPDATE *** RNC spokesman Danny Diaz responds to the ad: “Planned Parenthood’s ad is a vicious smear against Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin. This ad is patently false and represents the worst kind of politics. What Barack Obama and his most extreme allies fail to understand is that Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin have demonstrated strong leadership on the critical issues confronting the nation, which is what will resonate with the majority of Americans on Election Day.”

Palin needed to save the money from those rape kits so she could have the town build a multi-million dollar hockey rink for her kid!
"Rape Victim Hater" Palin is the most disgusting person in the world for adding insult to injury by making raped women pay for their own rape investigation kits, even if they are insured.

I'm glad that there are groups now targetting the Wicked Witch of Alaska for her many sins.  I hope to see more of them.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Uh, I don't think they want to go there.....you know what other State charges for "rape kits" -- ILLINOIS!  That's right -- home to Senator Obama.  By the way....most States charge for the kit.
I'm not sure if this is a fair attack or not. But if Magoo thinks calling Obama a pervert is ok, then it's fair.
WOW!!! Can you say landslide????
Sarah Palin was the Mayor of a city of 7,000. The State of Alaska passed a law outlawing the practice, to make Wasilla(the only place in the state charging for rape kits)stop, since requests to change the policy were ignored.

Seems like somehow, before the issue got the the state legislature, the Mayor may have heard about it, no?

Saying she didn't know is just not credible. She keeps up with what books are in the library, so she knew about this too.

And First Read's statement that they were trying to get money from insurance companies and not paitients? Ridiculous. Guess what - everyone who gets raped doesn't have insurance.

Stop trying to cover for Sarah Palin - she's a pit bull with lipstick, remember? She can handle it. She doesn't have a choice.
A former Democrat President once said - the buck stops here!  If Palin was Mayor when this was happening, then she is to take responsiblity for it...as it was part of a budget she signed off on! Either she read the thing and signed it with full knowledge of charging for rape kits, which means she's a witch, or, she didn't rully read the thing, and signed it not knowing of the charge for rape kits, which means she's incompetent...but, since she's a woman, my criticism of her must mean I'm a sexist pig!
The Defenders of Wildlife commercial is really good, it turned my stomach. Any animal lover or hunter with a heart will see it for what it is: pathetic use of technology over simple animals for slaughter. Disgusting with a capitol D.
Ouch that is a very stinging ad. Yesterday someone asked about the Pro Obama 527's well after McBush's campaign started blatantly lying about Obama's record. He removed the chains and let them cut loose. This is a good tuff ad and since she was such a hands on type mayor personally thanking people for things like returning an inkpen during a council meeting. You can bet your sweet bottom she apporved of this measure!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well Alaska needs a bigger voter base afterall.  What!?  You think we can tax the grizzlies?  Sheesh!
Who cares what she is for it definately isn't for women's rights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Talk about fear-mongering -- this sounds to me like Planned Parenthood is not only afraid of having its cheese moved -- they're downright terrified someone might actually try to take it away.  Follow the money folks -- regardless of your persuasion on the issue, money is the real motivator behind these nasty ads -- Planned Parenthood is no more trying to save rape victims from being slapped around physically and financially than the environmental movement is trying to save the environment from mandkind.  It's all about cash -- don't buy this baloney.
Planned Parenthood charges $200 bucks to snuff out a baby's life. THAT'S the real story here.

They are an insideous group that profits from death.
Wow, Planned Parenthood taking the moral high ground.  Now that's amazing.  This same organization whose bothched abortions have killed women, whose promotion of abortion on demand has lead to the unneccessary killing of over 40 million babies since 1973, AND whose profits from abortion are annually in the millions of $$$.  This same organization supports borderline infanticide with it's promotion of partial birth abortion...and they are the ones throwing stones?  This same organization, whose founder was Margaret Sanger, who promoted limiting the population of those she considered "unfit" which mainly was aimed at black people.  This greedy, racist, and barbaric organization has the gall to come off as "holier than thou"?  Oh, by the way, and our government sends millions of $$ each year to "help" Planned Parenthood brainwash our citizens and young people with their immoral philosophies.  And to think that Obama and Biden are two of Planned Parenthood's favorite politicians due to their spineless support for this sickening organization.  If for no other reason, vote for McCain/Palin and let's turn America back from this culture of death and back to a culture of life where every child, born or unborn, is welcomed and loved.
"the policy seems to have been aimed more at getting money from insurance companies than from victims"

Mark: Could you clarify the relationship between the victim and the insurance company, if any?
How is McCain/Palin looking now to those ex-Hilary voters who can’t bring themselves to vote for Obama/Biden?

Thank you Planned Parenthood!
This is really getting out of control and ridiculous. People are truly stupid if they really fall for an ad like that.  Of course it is in place to get insurance companies to pay, as it should be.
I had the miss fortune of this, I can not imagine the hospital charging myself or my insurance company for the rape kit, what would happen if the insurance company declined to pay? Then I guess I would have been flipping the bill. Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin, do not understand womens issues at all, if he selected Ms. Palin to try to get the womens vote I feel he made a hug mistake. Under the republican thinking, I would have had to pay for the exam the kit, and then they would charge me leagal fees to boot! Then, as in my case, what happens when the victim is preganet because of it? How do you give a child up of adoption, and then when they  are 18 years old and find you, explain to them why? How can anyone do that to another human? Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin can keep thier holyer then thou thoughts all to themselves! This is America, and we have the given right to think and worship how we want with out anyone telling us thier way is better!
Tell it like it is: Religious Sarah, speaker with God, doesn't give a damn about rape victims.
The cost of health care is a rape of the nation resources...costs must be regulated...the competition in the that field is not devalued by regulation as the republicans want every one to believe...
Sarah Palin takes the rape victim issue and compounds the misery...
God help us!!! McShame has lost his mind and integrity, well I don’t think he had any to begin with!!!! And McPalin please media stop giving her a free ride she is a heartbeat away from being president of the United States close your eyes and image that!!!! oh my god!!!
"Wasilla clearly had the policy. Bloggers have portrayed it as a heartless rule seeking money from rape victims, but they have neglected to mention that the policy seems to have been aimed more at getting money from insurance companies than from victims"

So is the policy somehow OK if its intent was to fleece insurance companies?

Please save us from Six Pack Sarah and Gamblin' Johnny.

Unstable and Unable to lead!

Wow! I heard about this a couple of weeks ago.  I don't know how McCain/Palin will react if asked about this.  I can't imagine they will attribute it to "Gotcha" journalism or to the liberal media.  But, I wouldn't put it past canned remarks.

Go Merica!
Not a good day for the McCain camp...maybe he should have done a little more homework on Sarah Palin before he rushed into picking her...just a thought...
Yup- just cause Palins a woman doesn't mean she understands our issues.  She's a puppet to MCCAIN and an embarassment to small town western people like myself.  She in no way represents us well and I would really like to know where her children are. Step down Ms. Palin, be a mother and put your childrens well being ahead of your own.
The truth is such a powerful message, espectially when the subject of said truth is a wacko-extremist like Sarah P.

Obama/Biden 08 (it's not even a close race anymore)
There is nothing about the McCain/Palin ticket that I like, but this ad is absurd--
If you go to the emergency room, they have a right to charge for services and equipment.
Does anybody complain that the guy hit by a car gets charged (or his insurance does) for the care he receives?

I mean, if they wanted to, I suppose they could have turned this into an appeal for universal health insurance, but it seems they are trying to portray Palin as harming rape victims.  It is a shame, because there is so much that she actually supports that harms rape victims--these silly claims only detract from the real arguments against her.
McCain/Palin, ready to lead?
No

Hehehe
Seems more honest and accurate than McThuselah's "sex ed for kindergardeners" ad, and He's John McCain and he approved that message.
Uh huh..with a stroke of her pen or by replacing the department head Mayor Sarah Palin could have changed this policy...I wonder if they had the same policy if a man got drunk and ran into a pole did they charge him for the breathalyzer?
I work in health insurance. It is a mistake to think that only your insurance co. pays for it. The bulk of your monthly premium is paid for by your employer. When that policy costs your employer more at open enrollment time, that monthly premium will cost you more as well. So, in fact, we all pay for it. This is why there should be (and is) restitution ordered by the court, to recoup on costs. But, it would be even better if there were education to help avoid this kind of assault. That being said, I doubt Palin would go for preventive education, given her thoughts on so many women's issues.
JOHN MCCAIN AND SARA PALIN YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH !
If it wasn't clear before, it is now. The extreme left wing groups are in charge of the Democratic party. Everyone from Planned Parenthood, to the Extreme Greens, to the left-wing teachers unions. And now they have Barack Obama as their front man - the man that never saw an abortion he didn't like. The media doesn't point any of these facts out because, well, they agree with all of them.
Reform is good only if it does what's right.  Saving Tax payers money should not be higher priority than keeping them safe.  That's just bad decision making.  Reform for Reforms sake only.  Not good.
Speaking of rape...Sarah Smirk is against abortion if a woman is raped and then gets pregnant...she is for forcing woman to bear the results of a forced pregnancy to satisfy her religious beliefs...she doesn't want to help support that child either
Why is Planned Parenthood about everything, but parenthood?
In a town as small as Wasilla, how could Mayor Palin not have known that rape victims were being charged for evidence gathering at the hospital?  It would be interesting to know just how many pages were in the Wasilla town budget each year that she was mayor.  Either she knew or she was as "hands off" as mayor as George W. Bush has been as President.
Could this be McCain/Palin's Willie Horton moment?
I'm happy Planned Parenthood is out front in center and getting their message out. The economy would take a huge hit if the abortion industy was outlawed. Barack Obama is for a strong economy - Barack Obama is for a strong abortion industry. That's why I'm voting for Barack Obama!
Before reading your article further I was about to say BS, Palin did endorse this policy for Wasilla. But I see you cleared that up by stating she did in fact endorse it by aproving and signing Wasilla's budget which clearly noted this policy as a money maker for the town. As far as just trying to get money from the rape victim's insurance companies and not the victims, tha tis BS too. How many of these victims did not have insurance. How many had insurance but the insurance companies didn't cover such rape kits. How many still had to pay some kind of insurance deductible themselves even though the insurance company covered the rape kits. Tell the whole damn truth will you. This policy was ludicrous, Palin knew of it and endorsed it and you know it. It is similar to her support of a policy to hunt and kill wolves from plane. There is a callouness about this woman, a Joe Six Pack without sensitivity. I wonder how many stop signs Palin has shot up while driving down the road in her pickup. We know who this woman is. Someone who trys to act tough and appear as one of the good ole tough country folk until cornered or called down. Then she'll cry like a baby.
This is another example of how women will fare
with Mccain/palin leadership.
Mccain voted against every bill that would help
women, middle class America.
Palin is anti-choice, anti sex education etc.
They will set the rights of the citizens
back many years.
Is Planned Parenthood also planning an ad that hectors OBAMA for the state of Illinois charging rape victims for their kits.  After all, he WAS in the state legislature and could have introduced legislation to repeal this.

Oh, I forgot, he voted present.  Never mind.
I think the Rapist should pay for it...
Neither McCain nor Palin have good positions on this issue.
I think Palin hates her own gender.  She seems to be taking the conventional conservative stance of blaming the victim.  ie. "you were raped because you were dressed to provocatively".

I hear the same victim blame from Republicans about the banking mess.  "It wasn't the fault of the poor banks.  It's those immoral consumers taking out bigger loans than they could handle.  They should have known better and they're the ones who should be punished."

I never really had a party offiliation before, but I do now.  I'm a democrat and liberal isn't a dirty word anymore.  The Republicans have just gotten too slimy.
This is a politically inneffective ad approach. Forget Palin - she's the best ad against herself. And by focusing on her, it actually gives some credence to the notion that "everyone is out to get her."
Really this is NOT a issue. a lot of cities do this.
The city can't afford them or that crime is so low ..so they Bill the insurance companies. Big Whoop !
Reg. Nurse in CA
I wonder if the kits contain the controversial "morning after pill"that immediately"undoes" a new pregnancy?  A pro-lifer wouldn't go for that.  I sure hope that SP's supporters wise up- she's absolutely a disgrace to our country.
Cheap shot
Let's stick to real issues

Her lack of experience and knowledge
The fact she doesn't read newspapers or magazines
