GOP turns up heat on Obama spending

Posted: Wednesday, October 01, 2008 10:34 AM by Carrie Dann

From NBC's Carrie Dann

The RNC says that the mercury's rising on an Obama meter that has nothing to do with the latest battleground state polls.

"Barack Obama's Spend-O-Meter," a new feature on the RNC website, offers a thermometer graphic illustrating the costs of Obama's new policy proposals, which Republicans say could top one trillion dollars.

The site estimates the costs of various items in an Obama administration's budget, including his plans for energy, health care, national service, and education. "If Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) could enact all of his campaign proposals, taxpayers would be faced with financing $1.238 trillion in new spending over one White House term," reads the bold print at the top of the lengthy  - and expensive-looking - list.

What the site doesn't outline are Obama's various methods of offsetting those costs, which include slashes to wasteful and pork barrel spending and the reversal of the Bush tax cuts. And, although Obama's spending plan is not matched by comparable projected revenue increases, McCain's proposals would also bump up the national debt substantially.  Per FactCheck.org, an analysis by the Tax Policy Center shows that "McCain's proposals would raise the debt by between $5.1 trillion and $7.4 trillion over 10 years. And while McCain has promised to balance the budget by 2013, the Tax Policy Center notes that doing so would require a 25 percent reduction in federal spending. Few economists outside the McCain-Palin campaign think that is a feasible goal. "

Where's the part of the message admitting that McCain's budget plan creates even more red ink than Obama's?
Obama Moving In For The Kill

I noted in a post a few weeks back that people did not understand that Obama had a side that can be very cold and calculating. That this side of him normally lies dormant deep within but would come out when necessary and at the right time to take down a foe. Well now is the time.  If you think that while Obama handles the current economic issues with calm and poise he is also not aware of these recent Ads coming out (and their timing) about the wolf hunting and the rape victim kits, etc. you are fooling yourself. Obama has McCain and Palin right where he wants them and sees it is time to move in for the kill.  Watch for Obama himself to maintain his cool and calm while these Ads from other parties and comments from his surrogates become even more numerous and aggressive. By election day McCain will not have a clue what hit him, but it will be like a sledge hammer to the side of the head.
The GOP is up to their old tricks; looks like Rove is back in the game.
Bawhahahaha...try again McCain.
McCain has no use for "fact checking" – why should he bring honesty into his campaign at this late date?
The truth is under McCain the national debt would sky rocket because of his support for the Bush Tax cuts. McCain really has sold his soul to the devil to try and be President. He is a shell of a man he once was. Sad.
The big word in that statement is IF..Obama has already stated he would most likely have to change some of his plans after taking office and seeing EXACTLY what he would be inheiriting..thats reasonable to me..the things he could and would cut out though, of Bush's and McCains previous spending plans might just off set the cost of Obamas plans..who do I trust more ? OBAMA..he seems to have the best judgement, is cool headed, welcomes constructive critism, and people who challenge his opinions, knows how to surround himself with other cool, intelligent people, and by far, seems to be for the PEOPLE most..dont think he would ever become "erratic", or quick to jump the gun, shoot 1st, etc..also he could best handle getting America back in popular favor with rest of world, and Lord knows, we need that..so my bet is on OBAMA
Texas independent..
and please, when commenting, dont just say nasty tthhings, give me some feedback that is intelligent..
McCain wants to end $15 Billion of 'ear marks'

But, then he wants an 'Ear Mark' of $300 Billion in tax cuts for corporations and the rich

Some 'fiscal conservative'

Palin is right, McCain is a Dinosaur is walking with men
One thing tax payers can't afford is Dementia close to the nuke button and an airhead for a Vice President. Todd runs the Alaska Governors house but he can't pull a Cheny in Washington DC. Obama has gotten his message out on economics and how he proposes to pay for them so McCain's ad will not play to undecided and independents and that is what he needs. But if he doesn't attack he will lose his conservative base because Palin is appearing very weak. McCain in a lose lose situation with ads like this.
I am so thankful for factcheck and the Tax Policy Center.  To think that someone might actually believe a repuglican?
Thanks, but no thanks to lies and deceptive government.
NO way. NO how. No liars!!!
Is it just me, or is the same Republican  party that:
* Led us to the brink of economic destruction with tax cuts and give aways to the wealty
* Put a gun to our heads and said "Give me $700 billion dollars, or the economy gets it"
* Turned budget surpluses into budget deficits

And now they want to talk about out of control spending?

Shut up GOP, you had your chance, and you BLEW IT!
The problem with Obama's plan to offset his spending increase is he relies on cutting "pork barrel spending". That is a joke, do you really think Pelosi/Reid and company are going to allow their favorite programs to be cut??
If McCain ends ear marks, how will Alaska make any money? Maybe he and Palin should have a debate.
Uh Oh I see there are not enough pro Obama comments on this story to allow any dissenting views
Can we say desperate?
The GOP sucks vote em all out!
Once again, facts are alien concepts to the wingnut mind.
I don't think McCain will ever get the chance. Gambler McCain has shown his erratic mindset and unstable temperament, and all the lipstick in the world could never gloss it over.
Since when has the McCain campaign been interested in facts?
The informed have seen so much of this distortation and down right lieing and have seen this. That the repuks have no plan for anything! No plan to stop forclosers,no plan for education reform,no plan for healthcare,no plan for tax brakes for the middle class, and no clue how to fix the ecnomoy. So they can put up all the meters they want, seems all they have is gimics,distortion,flip-flop by the hour. And there party seems to be in division.Obamas plan 1.238 trillion.McCains plan between 5.1 and 7.4 trillion ,but hay whats a couple trill between friends.
McCain would actually increase the national debt more than Obama . . . and we wants to talk about O's spending!?

Mwahahahahahah!!!

OLD MEN YELL AT CLOUD!!!!
What is it that will wake these McSame supporters to see the truth? Do we have to go "Clockwork Orange" on them? (I'm referring to the scene of his "reform"). Seriously, what will it take to open their eyes!? I'm scared to death about this election and how the polls are still Sooooooo close.

Obama 08!
These number must be wrong. Obama's Huge Government with all of his free healthcare etc will cost us dearly. I do get that his higher taxes on everyone will off set his out of control spending.
Same old line being pushed by the Republican liars -- blah blah blah blah.  Time for a leader not a politician!

Obama/Biden '08
McCain is getting desparate.  He just about lost it with the Des Moines Register--it's only a matter of time.  I voted yesterday--hope everyone who can vote early-does.  Less chance of experiencing voting machine failures on election day.
McCain might have to go back to the Rovian playbook to get something more effective. He is not going to win playing the numbers game.

McCain and Obama want to spend over a trillion dollars for their respective proposals, the difference is Obama's target the middle class while McCain wants to keep the tax cut for the rich.

Not a winning strategy...or is it tactic?

Obama/Biden
The uninformed voter will only see the ad critizing Obama and the tax hike, not the McCain tax increase.

"So who will informed the uniformed"?

Don't wait on the press. They have highjacked this election season only with their talking points not fact.

Thanks Factcheck for more of the truth. Someone there working for their pay.

If only congress follow suit.

Love it, I 'll vote today
Ok. They are just wasting their time with this.  Tell the people how you can fix the problem. Talk about the issues.  We dont want to hear what Obama is going to do, he has told us that already. What are you going to do RNC and Sen. McCain.  Just like I thought you really dont have anything else to say.
The only way that I would consider anything out of McCain's mouth to be truthful is after he admits that asking Palin to be his running mate was a colossal mistake! From that point on, I might consider his comments to be truthful.
McCain has dementia...he does not understand...we need to start spending money on Americans that need help...we need to start spending money to build a strong America...The United States spend money on people all over the world...spend it here in America!!!!

YES OBAMA...SPEND MONEY ON MIDDLE CLASS AND POOR AMERICANS...
Facts are irrelevant to the Republican party.  They are not going to let a little thing like the truth interfer with what they say.  McCain has lost his honor and his crediblity.  Palin is a disasterous choice as VP and we can not afford to elect this team.
It seems to me that McCain's ads are "preaching to the choir"-addressed to his base rather than to the undecided and independent voters.  One month from the election-shouldn't he be sure of his base and instead focusing on the people who haven't made up their minds?  I don't think they will respond to this kind of ad.
Obama is horrible.  Thank God that some web sites will still print the truth. Come on Journalists redeem yourselves and stop bowing at the altar of Obama.  Show this travesty for what he truly is.
Who cares? How is this news First Read? Someone needs to get out of the office and find something real to report on.
I think it's time for McCain to run to mama or better yet seek comfort with a cheer leader as he is so enamored by these perculiar ladies of beauty.
Carrie Dann, where do you come off fact checking Capt. Maverick?! Don't you know he spent five years in a North Vietnamese POW camp? You're un-American and probably sexist, too. You just don't understand, and Capt. Maverick will no longer look YOU in the eyes.
hahaha nice try!  the repubs are looking pathetic these days.
Why are Republicans both so fiscally irresponsible and so lacking in integrity?
I am more disgusted with this election than with any other election I have ever witnessed (my first eligible election was Bush/Dukakis).  Obama suffers from the same inexperience and lack of judgement that "W" did and does and will end up making the same "ideal based" mistakes that Bush did.  McCain is more experienced, but has completely buckled to the far right and can no longer be trusted to do the right thing.  Palin is Quayle in a woman's body.
