McCain vs. the Des Moines Register

Posted: Wednesday, October 01, 2008 4:05 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC's Carrie Dann
When John McCain sat down with the Des Moines Register's editorial board before the Iowa caucuses, he ended up earning a glowing endorsement that kicked his momentum up a notch in a state that has seldom done him many favors.   In its eleventh-hour endorsement, the paper lauded his honor, his maverick status, and his "moral authority," even as it fleetingly warned that "he can be hot-tempered, a trait that's not helpful in conducting diplomacy."

That sentiment is taking on a new twist today. Video clips of McCain's brusque and sometimes sarcastic exchanges during his sit-down yesterday with the Iowa paper’s board  are getting a lot of play, with cheery Democrats citing the video as evidence of McCain’s short temper and penchant for sarcasm.

In the meeting, McCain was particularly short when questioned about the governing experience offered by first-term Alaska governor Sarah Palin.  “You and I just have a fundamental disagreement, and I am so happy the American people seem to be siding with me,” he replied when a member of the board suggested that Palin lacks experience.

Further questioned, McCain’s tone grew more annoyed. He suggested that Palin does not need the blessing of Republican intelligentsia to appeal to everyday voters. “If there's a Georgetown cocktail party person who, quote, calls himself a conservative who doesn't like her, good luck. I don't dismiss him,” he said. “I think the American people have overwhelmingly shown their approval.”

When another member of the board indicated that McCain’s careers in the military and in civil service meant that he had never been without a cushy health care plan, the Arizona senator astringently referred to his years as a prisoner of war, saying that “I did go for a period of time when the health care wasn't very good.”

McCain, whose Iowa campaign trips last summer were characterized by freewheeling “Straight Talk” sessions with the dwindling corps of reporters who followed his ailing campaign, vigorously took issue with the Register editors when his reputation for honest campaigning was questioned. “I have always had 100 percent, absolute truth,” he replied. “That's been my life, and putting my country first. I'll match that record with anyone and an assertion that I have ever done otherwise, I take strong exception to.”

Asked specifically about the McCain campaign’s assertion that Obama supported sex education for kindergarteners, a claim described as deceptive by most independent sources, McCain responded, “He did, he did.”

“We have the documentation,” he told the board impatiently. “I’ll be glad to provide it to you.”

McCain lags in the polls in Iowa, where Barack Obama engineered an unprecedented ground game during the caucuses and won the support of Iowans who cherish the state’s status as an early kingmaker in the nominating process. His fourth-place finish in the caucuses was not unexpected; he did not curry much favor with the state’s evangelical population, and his stalwart opposition to ethanol subsidies has never won him many Iowan friends.

*** UPDATE *** In its sum-up piece, the Register calls McCain's performance "crisp and deliberate."

MORE : "Compared to earlier visits, however, when he was a long-shot caucus candidate and more relaxed, McCain on Tuesday was serious, on message and in no mood to be challenged. He was often quick to respond by challenging the premise of a question."

Honestly he's running out of feet to shoot himself in!
McCain has lost his mind. I am a bit speechless. But not totally :-)

Re: McCain saying Clinton or Reagan did not have experience....holy cow!

Clinton was governor of Arkansas for 10+ years. Arkansas has 4x the population of Alaska.

Reagan was governor of California for 8 years. California, back then, had at least an order of magnitude many people than Alaska does today.

What an asinine comment by McCain!!
I have been all over the McCain website and can't find the evidence he talks about regarding Obama supporting sex education for kindergarteners. In any case, enough independent sources have verified that McCain's claims aren't true, but I just wanted to see the lies for myself.
If McCain really believes Palin is qualified to take over as POTUS on Day 2, if necessary, he is delusional.  If not--he is incredibly selfish and dishonest and clearly does NOT love his country.
This is just another example of McCain showing his lack of leadership and his regret for picking Palin. The fact is that America is not embracing her and Republicans and reporters are now starting to say she should step down.

Will SOMEONE PLEASE correct McCain' sorry ass on the whole 'sex-ed-for-kindergartners' issue?!?!  PLEASE!

Distort. Distract.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
I put my country first! Always! Can't you see that?! POW! Country first, politics second!! Why are my poll numbers slipping!?! What the hell is wrong with this country!?!?!

Old man yells at editorial board.
McCain: "I have always had 100 percent, absolute truth."

The scary thing is he may actually believe this.

That aside, Sen Hothead, its always a mistake to reinforce your own negative perceptions. And being as "experienced" as you are, you obviously know this, but still can't quite control yourself.

Sorry, but I just don't want a president who is ruled by his own emotions, especially when those emotions seem so childish so often.
Oh, no, who needs the blessing of one's own Party-Certainly not a Maverick who is so riddled with early signs of Dementia he'd go far enough to compare Palin with Bill Clinton because both were/are Governors. Problem is, even Republicans are smart enough to see the difference between a Governor who was a Rhodes Scholar, attended Oxford and Law school and, one can even assume, possesses a genius mind. Sarah Palin, on the other hand possesses a ...Hunting Licesne???
Ok. If any of you still feel the need to vote for Sen. McCain, please go ahead. It's your right as an American. When everything is said and done, please dont come crying when you see President-elect Obama being driven down the streets of DC to make his inaugural speech. Nobody will be listiening to you that day. That's our right as Americans. (sticking my tongue out at you).
Once again McShame shows he does not have the TEMPERMENT to be a real leader
Did you see him get lost on stage today???

Too Old, too dumb and too arrogant.
McCain Palin
Dumb and DUMBER
And yet another bolt pops off the Straight Talk Express . . .
Let's be clear- McCain does not have the steady, stable temperament that the Presidency requires.  Ms. Palin certainly does not have the education, background or world view that the Vice Presidency requires; she obviously doesn't even read.

It's about time that this country again puts their best and brightest into office.  We deserve to have a President that is thoughtful, well-educated and not prone to temper tantrums.  These are not negative characteristics, they are the least that this country needs and deserves!
"...and I am so happy the American people seem to be siding with me..."

Yet another example of how late to the party McCain is.  Palin has been labeled an albatross for at least five days now.  In true and timely form - he will address our concerns --- next week, after he's rested up over the weekend.

Out of touch/out of mind - literally
McTasmanian Devil.  Man what a piece of work.  Voting for this narrow minded crabby old geek is like giving a hand grenade to a spoiled eight year old.  McCain/Palin are the Of Mice and Men candidates and they are not ready for prime time.  Vote Obama so that the nation Will have a future.
mccain is like a scary old grandpa
Yes, just what we need... another hot-headed president that lives in a bubble. The majority of America is NOT siding with you when it comes to Palin. And c'mon... its been proven that Obama didnt want to teach kindergarteners about sex education - he's referring to a program to teach kids about not talking to strangers (possible sex offenders). Looks like the Straight Talk Express broke down on I80

Obama/Biden 08
what a dork
There was a time when I had so much respect for John McCain. I thought he was a man of character and principle.
That was very naive. What we see today is either the real John McCain or simply that he'll do and say anything to be elected president.

This NUT will say anything to paint Obama with a bad brush.

McNutty would rather LIE and loose any dignity he may have had, than lose an election

This is our country.  This is SERIOUS STUFF!  Not a beauty contest!

He is Unstable and she is Unable!!!

Just because you like her DOES NOT MEAN SHE IS READY... AND YOU ALL KNOW IT.

If you truely put COUNTRY FIRST, you could not possibly vote for them

So now McCain dares to compare Sarah Palin with Ronald Regan or
Bill Clinton? What is this man thinking, if anything? Also, he needs to
stop using the word "fundamental" in every other sentence. He sounds like a worn out old 45 record. He keeps inflating
number of people that attend their dog and pony shows and
has no clue as to how tired, angry and out of touch he comes across
to the voters. I once had respect for McCain and thought he would make a good president. Those days are long gone. He went and sold his soul to the ultra conservative wing of the party to get their endorsement, weak that it is. That is not the definition of "maverick", that "MY FRIENDS" is a sell out. What a team Tired McCain and Clueless Palin. John McCain, you are no longer a friend of mine.
My vote goes to Obama. Final answer!
McCain has become a shell of the man he used to be!  Truly sad!  Say, I've been neither a mayor or a governor.  But, I did live in Iran for nearly 2 years ... and, frankly, having lived and worked amongst the Iranian population, I have considerably more "foreign policy" experience than Sarah Palin!!
You know McCain was pissed that his judgment regarding Palin was questioned when he attacks Biden (not by name)in his rant.

And while I think he showed courage in not using his Dad's position to get out of prison early, technically the question regarding his always having a cushy health care plan was right. He wasn't able to access or use the plan during his time as a POW but he always had the coverage. (His 1st wife and 3 kids were able to use the plan)

"McTasmanian Devil.  Man what a piece of work.  Voting for this narrow minded crabby old geek is like giving a hand grenade to a spoiled eight year old.  McCain/Palin are the Of Mice and Men candidates and they are not ready for prime time.  Vote Obama so that the nation Will have a future."

Reno Will (Sent Wednesday, October 01, 2008 4:29 PM)

Well said Reno Will!!!!   Just HAD to ditto it!!!!
This man simply doesn't have the right personality to be president.  Angry, petty, self-aggrandizing, and either fundamentally dishonest, or delusional.  No way.
Quoted from McCain.
“I just want to make a comment about the obvious issue and that is the failure of Congress to act yesterday. Its just not acceptable,” said McCain. “This is just a not acceptable situation. I’m not saying this is the perfect answer. If I were dictator, which I always aspire to be, I would write it a little bit differently.”

Scares me! Sorry McCain, you have wore out your welcome in Iowa!
"LORD MAKE A WAY, LORD MAKE A WAY"

DISHONORABLE LIAR.
Anyone else notice that McCain's lost control of his left eye.  It will start twitching eradictly.

It happened during last week's debate and has happened frequently this week.

He also became lost when trying to leave the stage in Missouri today.  He went back and forth several times until someone helped him off the stage.

This is starting to become very frightening.
I think McCain is losing his mental clarity in all seriousness. Him and his VP are dangerous.
Senator McCain is becoming mentally unstable. If anyone watched the C-SPAN broadcast of the debates, it was more than apparent. I was reminded of old footage of Adolph Hitler at the 1936 Olympics in Munich where is is rocking back & forth like a mental patient. The film was of course never shown to the public, German or otherwise, until well after the war. McCain's facial expressions and physical reactions during that debate were indicative of a serious problem. I'm sure his handlers have told him about this and worked to prevent a repeat performance. Yet over ther past two weeks in particular, his judgment, his grasped of reality, and his ability to comprehend questions appear to be impaired. He is lashing out at imaginary foes. Signs of acute paranoia are manifesting themsleves. This is a dangerous time for America.
Aren't there any smart American's out there?  Don't you realize your beloved Obama has close ties to Muslims, radicals, Iran, Pakastan and who knows what else?     DO YOUR HOMEWORK, RESEARCH OBAMA AND MICHELLE, THE MEDIA WON'T DO IT FOR YOU!    Your sorry mouthy selves will regret the day you spoke Obama's name when all these crooks start reeling your boy in!  I would rather take my chances with a genuine American like McCain any day than sell my country out to the Muslims.  Shame on you all!
Whoa!  I think it is too early to call the election just because McCain's rhetoric is getting a bit explosive...remember Khrushchev pounding his shoe, and Castro firing expletives. Hot contention doesn't eliminate one from a position of power -- at least in totalitarian states.  Oops, is that the direction we are heading?
You know, I have to say that the Register was totally incompetent in this interview.  How do you accuse McCain of being loose with the truth and not have any examples to back it up... only the ad about sex-ed for little kids?  Nothing else?

They deserved to look stupid.  Dumb Iowan hicks.  I mean, come on!  There are hundreds of examples, and they couldn't come up with one?
Can we please teach McCant some new vocabulary words. I realize that after the "fundamentals of our economy are strong" disaster he is attempting to insert the word fundamental into every conversation of to describe and and all situations but this is ridiculus.

Also note that he is hostile and condescending to reporters and the American poeple.

McCrazy is not able to be asked a question by someone that does not agree with him.
He acts as if, just because he was a POW, you are not allowed to disagree, or he'll cut you down.

He is NOT the only POW in this country.  Why is he bestowed all the honor and glory that they ALL deserve.
He was the one that is nick named "SONGBIRD", because he made many anti-American tapes and broke his OWN arms when he ejected from his plane by holding them OUT instead of how he was taught... after a night of heavy drinking.

He is NOT the hero that he wants all to believe.  Stop treating him as though he is!!!!

He is the arrogant elitist.  Not Obama.

The whole country is beginning to get it. Mccain is NOT FIT to run the country and palin SURELY is NOT !!!

UnStable & UnAble...

This campaign would be funny if it weren't so sad.  I once had respect for John McCain; I thought he had integrity.  I was so wrong.

He's going to be even nastier when he sees the latest polls.
