McCain: Will the Wright card work?

Posted: Thursday, October 02, 2008 9:25 AM by Carrie Dann

Time looks at McCain's various news cycle ploys and notes: "Even if such attacks could potentially give McCain a brief boost, it's not at all clear that they would help for the long haul. After all, since mid-summer, the Arizona senator has effectively dominated the day-to-day media narrative through a series of surprising, bold and, to some, reckless tactical moves designed to keep his opponent on the ropes. Whether he's been depicting Barack Obama as Paris Hilton, selecting the little known governor of Alaska as his running mate, manufacturing the lipstick-on-a-pig contretemps, or, most recently, ‘suspending’ his campaign to tend to the financial crisis, McCain has consistently garnered the headlines and forced his opponent to respond.”

Video: Sen. John McCain addresses some of the bailout bill's tax breaks, such as the $192 million for rum producers, saying that the system in Washington needs to change.

“Each of the bold moves brought McCain short-term political gain, throwing the often unflappable Obama off his stride and keeping the Republican nominee very much in the presidential hunt in a dismal year for Republicans. But the tactics also each contained the potential for long-term political costs by distracting from, or eroding, the central McCain message."

ANYONE LISTENING???
Simply put: no.

Barack Obama has completely distanced himself from that issue.  It's water under the proverbial bridge.

The end.

http://thepajamapundit.com/

Barack Obama and John McCain were back in the Senate on Wednesday for the bailout legislation and the "political tension was clear," the New York Times reports. "Obama walked to the Republican side of the aisle to greet Senator John McCain, who offered a chilly look and a brief return handshake."

CQ has details:

Let the record reflect that Barack Obama made the approach to John McCain tonight.

As the two shared the Senate floor tonight for the first time since they won their party nominations, Obama stood chatting with Democrats on his side of the aisle, and McCain stood on the Republican side of the aisle.

So Obama crossed over into enemy territory.

He walked over to where McCain was chatting with Republican Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida and Independent Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut. And he stretched out his arm and offered his hand to McCain.

McCain shook it, but with a "go away" look that no one could miss. He tried his best not to even look at Obama.

Finally, with a tight smile, McCain managed a greeting: "Good to see you."

Obama got the message. He shook hands with Martinez and Lieberman -- both of whom greeted him more warmly -- and quickly beat a retreat back to the Democratic side.

Time magazine is being too kind to McCain. His "lipstick" faux outrage and his "suspension" of his campaign did not even garner him any short-term advantage, and long-term thse ploys were exposed as sideshows unfitting for presidential temerament.
"Tailhook" Johnny is lurching around like a drunken sailor on shore leave with him flip flopping around like a fish out of water.  The Straight Talk Titanic hit an iceberg on 9/15/08 and has been taking on water every day as it slowly sinks into the stormy seas.  Beware the Ides of September grumpy old man.

What an arrogant interview he gave to the Des Moines Register.  After the paper endorsed him he should have shown more gratitude.  For those fools who are going to vote for him just note what he'll do to you once he's gotten your vote.  I hope the paper shows some righteous indignation and rescinds their endorsement of him and endorse Obama as Obama would never treat them that way because he has manners and integrity.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!

If Mccain does this, he will truly lose the attention of the country.  We already now know him as a LIAR.  Running ads involving Rev. Wright, Mccain will prove his desparation, and LOSE.

I am a Republican that is cringing everytime I see one of his ads or watch him on TV.

The debate was OK, but he showed Obama such disrespect in tone, words and action, that he made me begin to lose respect for Mccain.  Many others felt the same way.

So it's his call...

He's already floated the Chicago politics angle and it hasn't worked. Why would the country's most infamous pastor change anything? Whoever would be influenced, has been influenced. It's the economy, stupid.
Thanks But No Thanks, I have many resources to keep me abreast of Political News in Washington from alaska, And I have been listening to Joe biden since 1972 on his debates, but after all this information, I have no clue as to any supreme court rulings that I object too! The only one I can reference is Roe v. Wade!! Is this a gothcha moment ?  No Comment!! My parents have always said, If you entertain a fool, they make you look foolish!! Americans are no fools and we refuse to entertain the foolish!
No, the Wright Card will not work. This time (after addressing it in the primaries) Obama will ignore it. The Wright Card may strengthen McCain's base (those already voting for McCain ) but it will not turn independents or others that McCain needs to win this election to McCain. In fact, it will turn people against McCain. At this time and in the midst of this economic crises people are looking for bi-partisan cooperatioon to make the right choices and to resolve issues. They are tired of the attacks. On this one, Mccain loses again.

The article reads more like an obituary than a piece of journalism...

RIP McCain/Palin.

Obama/Biden '08
The "bold" moves may have brought some short-term gains to the McCain campaign, but in retrospect they aren't looking so good now.

The Palin pick is certainly not helping, and the suspension of the campaign suspension - stating emphatically he wouldn't debate and then debating - just made McCain look all the more erratic, reckless and uncentered.

Its reached the point where if all McCain has to fall back on is a guilt by association campaign, we are looking at an electoral landslide. I just don't think voters will appreciate at this point in time obvious distractions from real issues in favor of Wright/Ayers/Rezco mudslinging - especially when that mud is hardly anything new.

Maybe McCain will get lucky and al Qaeda will come to his rescue.
Throw Obama off his stride? McCain gets the headlines but is losing the polls. There seems to be some disconnect. McCain's ?distractions" are the main message. He has no voter standing on the issues, with perhaps Iraq being an exception and that too is eroding.

Finally I would substitute the word "bold" with frentic.
Perhaps because McCain doesn't have a 'central message'?
What central McCain message?

Are you voting your hopes or your fears, America?
No...the Wright card won't work...Sarah Palin's pastor(s) not withstanding...nor will any of the other so-called "cards" they have.

Why?

Because folks are just downright sick of this. None of it holds water, none of it advances us forward as a country, none of it speaks to the needs of today--and that is what we need: someone with the leadership capability, temperament, judgment, insight, intelligence, and dedication to meet our greatest challenges.

That IS Obama-Biden. It IS NOT McCain-Palin

The choice becomes clearer and clearer every day, no matter how much McCain tries to muddy the waters with his desperate, straw-grasping mentality and behavior.
Give the American people more credit than that.  If McCain brings up Wright, we know why he's doing it and he won't get any more votes than he has right now.  Do the smart thing McCain and try to run a decent campaign.  Remember you reap what you sow.
No surprise that McLies will again try the "fear" game.  Will be interesting how much it will impact the general publics view (in both fear of Obama and in impact of McCain's integrity).

Obama/Biden '08
If McCain has something new, that might throw Obama off his message. But a rerun of past things like Wright won't matter. Hillary's kitchen sink may have  innoculated him!

I am a Republican and you are losing us with these dirty tricks.  The Rev Wright card did not work before.  It won't work now.

Try talking about YOUR proposed plans and ideas IN DETAIL...

Tell us what you are FOR, instead of WHO you are against.

Rev Wright is OLD news...  Maybe that is the problem.  Are you stuck in the PAST?  Be Positive and that will make us feel better about voting for you.

That will win us back...  Not all of this Wright nonsense.  Issues are what we want and deserve to hear.

                      N-O-W !!!

It will get the base energized but new voters, I don't think so.
Palins debate will wipe out any rise in McCain voters from this ploy. Old news anyways, don't they have anymore tricks in their political bag?
What next, the juxtaposition of Osama and Obama pictures and showing how close their names are.
This grandpa has had his day. It's over. The public wants real change, not another round of nasty attacks from McBush.
If the repubs are going to talk about Wright, let the dems talk about Palin's Witch doctor! Have you seen his videos?  CRAZY!  The witch doctor's performance will remind the jewish voters in Florida that Palin and her preacher are not on their side!
If McCain wants to revisit the Rev. Wright episode, I think it is perfectly valid to Revisit the "Keating 5" episode and the last bailout of the financial markets.
I can't believe I'm writing this:

This election year the deck is stacked against McCain. That is sad. This man is not being given a fair chance, because he is running on the republican
ticket. Maybe that's fate ? who knows ? I am not a fan of Bush, and I don't see McCain and Bush as one.

On the other hand, I was a Clinton backer. I still feel very strongly that she should be the nominee.
I like what I hear from Obama only because his and Hiallrys ideas were so close, but there is MAJOR trust factor that is missing with him.

I feel Obama will win , but it will be close. I am trying to get use to that idea but really having a hard time with it. His past and present connections with people like Rev Wright and Ayers make me very afraid of what he really thinks and will do.

So as this election draws close I don't know who to vote for. Still undecided
McCain's making so many mistakes with his campaign, it'll be considered dumb luck when he finally gets something right.
Same ol, same ol, same old McSame.
"But the tactics also each contained the potential for long-term political costs by distracting from, or eroding, the central McCain message."

That's because McNuts does not have a "central message" other than to constantly lie about Obama's policies and record.

It is actually frightening to think that you left Washington declaring "mission accomplished" in regards to the first bail out bill when not one representative from your home state voted for it.

If that's the kind of experience you say Obama lacks then thank the high heavens for that.

Next we'll get to see all the Rebulicans crying about the "treatment" Sarah will experiance in tonights debate.

Go Obama/Biden
The problem for John Sydney McCain III is that this is a serious time in America and we are sick of political gimmicks. If you have something to say to the American people, just come out and say it. If your plans and strategies for our future don't add up, then accept that like a man and move on. Attacking, lying and pandering are tactics that we, the people are wholeheartedly rejecting this time. So, go ahead and try to reclaim the headlines with more attacks or more gimmicks and see not only your presidential aspirations sink but the people of Arizona will reject you as their favorite son too. Its obvious that you would rather give up your honor than lose an election.
Don't be surprised that he makes the bold move of "PULLING THE FIRE ALARM" during the debate tonight!
I put $$ on this...

politicaladattacks.blogspot.com
Talk about "shoddy" journalism!!!!  What's with that headline???

No where in this "article" does it state that the McCain camp has an ad out about Rev. Wright!  You know why?  Because they haven't released one!

And of course all you ObamaNuts can't read -- so you didn't even pick up on that FACT!
He doesnt need the wright card. How about Obama being a lawyer for the class action suit against CITI Bank to force them to make mortgages available to low income individuals. Talk about causing this current financial mess.  Check Find Law  or Lexus Nexis its all there.
Here are a few links to the story.

Obama only seperated himself from Rev. Wright AFTER all of the racist remarks Wright made came out to the public.  He spent 20 years sitting in the man's church and never once had the revelation that he should leave that church because of the hate it spewed.  He lacks the judgement that is necessary to be a President.  And this is just one of many shady associations Obama has: William Ayers, Tony Rezko, Franklin Raines, Jim Johnson.  Liberals may not care about this country but we conservatives do, and Obama will run it into the ground.
This is not a McCain ad.  It is run by a seperate group.  Again, the liberal media spins this to seem like McCain is playing this card when he is not.  You are all liars
Never underestimate how oily and smarmy the Republican machinery can be.  Johnny Boy was treated miserably by the Bushies in 2000 and said he'd never treat anyone the way he was treated by them.  Then, seven years later, he hired the same staff to malign his opponent.

The Democrats might want to focus on which of John's 13 cars he drove to one of his 9 homes to work on his latest smear.
And everyone was SURE President Bush wouldn' be re-elected in 2004.

McCain/Palin '08
Of course not! The main thing that concerns "main street"(rightfully so) is who is better serving them and the country. That's Obama/Biden! McCain lost all credibility as a trustworthy candidate(oxymoron) the second he picked Palin as his running mate. How could he/any Republican supporter truly say she is/was the best VP candidate of their party blew any chance of claiming that was done for the good of the country. As for this Wright thing it shows even more incompetency/lack of new ideas on McCain's part. I for one say thank you McCain for representing your party's lack of judgement on the intelligence of the average Joe of America because by doing so, you've failed miserably and America will "pass" on you.

If you supported Hillry's ideas, there is NO way you could vote for Mccain/palin!

You say you cannot trust Obama because of "His past and present connections with people like Rev Wright and Ayers".  He has quit his church.  When Ayres committed his crime, Sen. OBAMA was 9 (NINE) YEARS OLD.  Bill Clinton pardoned him!  Obama met him when Ayres was a teacher and good citizen!

On the other hand, Mccain was involved in the KEATING FIVE drama, and his wife was a druggie that wrote out Rx's with her co-workers names on them to get the drugs.  Mccain fought to keep her from having charges brought up against her.  He cheated on her and his first wife.  Obama loves and adores his wife and family and will let anyone know it!

Do you judge character by how they treat those in your life?

If so, Obama is the one to trust, not mccain...

Karl,

I understand how you feel. Several years ago, I used to really respect McCain. Even though I am a Democrat I always used to say that John McCain would be the only Republican I would ever vote for. Time has changed him though. Over the last few years and surely during this campaign, I see that McCain has chosen ambition over his integrity.

I am from northwest PA and I have to tell you that I thought Hillary would be great for this area. Almost all of our plants have closed down as well as most small businesses. As a matter of fact one of the few remaining plants in this area (Sawhill) just recently had to sue the Fed government because the Republicans pushed for laws that keep allowing China to flood the market (dumping) of unreasonably cheap steel.

It is because Obama and Hillary have similiar plans for the country that I am voting for Obama. McCain may not be Bush's twin but he has allowed Bush's advisors and chronies to influence his decisions for quite a while now and I can not trust that McCain will revert back to the man I once respected. It is McCain and the Republican philosophy that I feel has ravaged this country and its people.

Rev Wright is one of the most influential pastors in Chicago and a lot of different races attend his church, including whites. Ayers was an aquaintence of Obama's due to a community project that they happened to be both placed on; they are not what you would call "good friends". Although these two people may or may not be a huge influence on Obama, I know that Bush and his people are VERY influential to McCain.

I hate the fact that our beautiful state is considered part of the "Rust Belt". We need jobs here desperately and I know that McCain feels no need to improve this. He is fine that most US jobs consist of the "service industry". I do not know about you but I need more than that, my family needs more then that. Our schools in this area also need improvement. A lot of the schools in my area are threatened with funding because of the "No Child Left Behind" policy; they include the academically challenged students with the honor students and all suffer for it.

I am not telling you who to vote for by any means but just letting you know how another Pennsylvanian feels. It is crucial for Obama to win this state and we have gone blue so many times to no avail over the last decade. It is time for a change for sure.

There is talk about Palin being removed from the ticket, shouldn't there be talk about the same thing for McCain. This old man has nothing new to talk about, he is just the same old DC crooked politician.

In the interview with the Des Moines register he talked about his honest record, the Keating 5 and all the lies that he has been caught in during this elections season not-with-standing of course.

America has serious problems and we need serious people, not someone who has sold their soul just for a nomination.

The people who vote for McCain will have a lot of explaining to do if McCain is voted in and it can start with Liberman and Graham.
It will only add more evidence that McCain and his campaign have no capacity to lead on issues, they have no ideas. Palin was added as a trinket to appeal to some voters, not as someone with possible presidential capacity. And now they want to regress to sleaze that didn't have lasting effect the first time around. McCain and his campaign demonstrate day after day that they have little to nothing to offer to the American voter. I can't believe that at this point there is anyone who believes that John McCain and Sarah Palin are fit to lead the nation.

I think Obama's ties with Ayers, Rezko, and the Chicago political machine are much more relevant than Rev. Wright.  But even that would be too little too late.  McCain doesn't need to turn this into a cultural issue because it will backfire badly.  If he would just stick to the issues and fight for what he truly believes in, I think he can still pull this thing off.  Independents sre not stakeholders in the culture war, those votes have already been won on both sides.  Every American, however, has a pocketbook.  Fiscal conservatism works.  Keynsian economic theory does not.  If our current administration were true conservatives, we would not be in the situation we are in now.
FOX News has been rehasing Wright, Ayers and the others 24/7. For the Republicans, these attacks are old news. So I don't think they'll damage Obama anymore than they already might have.

The problem for McCain is one of his own making. For the last few weeks, he's shown voters his angry, impulsive and erractic side. Palin's vacuousness has not helped. McCain needs to get his own house in order instead of throwing rocks at Obama's.
To tie this in to his snippy debate line, McCain and Schmidt have no clue how to adopt and follow a "strategy" rather than a series of "tactics."  Obama has had a strategy for almost 2 years now of developing a grass roots campaign, a great organization and a consistent core message that he truly thinks is best for the country.  He's had well articulated plans out on his website for months.  He hasn't changed those core views because of a prevailing sentiment, although he has adjusted tactics (fewer huge rallies for a while, more beef in his speeches).  He didn't freak out when he was down double digits to Hillary.  He didn't lose it when the Palin pick flipped the national numbers. If fears of the economy subside or an October surprise gets launched (my money's on Rezko, not Wright) he won't panic.  He's just going to keep building, elevate his game and put himself in position to win.

I'll be the first to admit that given the same options, I'd probably be like Steve Schmidt and go for the cheap bump every time.  Knowing what not to do, even if it seems like doing it would help you, is often the true test of leadership and wisdom.  Obama seems to be passing that test with flying colors.
People shouls pay attention the Wright and Ayers connections. These are serious issues that Obama has brushed aside. Make you think after the election does he make these type of people a part of his cabinet ?
Obama is a very scary guy that it looks like will get elected and ONLY because of his skin color. What does that say about what will happen to our country.
Play those witch doctor ads over and over. So much for McCain's capacity to vet a VP and so much for his concern about the future of the nation. McCain has dishonored the party and the process of presidential elections.
I like what I hear from Obama only because his and Hiallrys ideas were so close, but there is MAJOR trust factor that is missing with him.

But you "trusted" ducking sniper-fire Clinton and all her lies? Now THAT'S funny! Did you also "trust" that Bill wasn't selling American jobs to Columbia just to get more money for himself AND Hillary? If Hillary was the "leader" you pretend she is, then WHY isn't she the nominee????? She got beat by her own game, my friend, and that;s why Bill is still upset even today!  Obama/Biden '08/'12
