Biden vs. Palin: Let's get ready to rumble

Posted: Thursday, October 02, 2008 9:32 AM by Carrie Dann

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch tees up tonight’s VP debate. “Although Obama and McCain have three debates of their own, it's the vice presidential face-off that has taken on the aura of the marquee event.  ‘This is the first time it seems that a vice presidential debate might have an impact on the election,’ said Peter Kastor, a history professor at Washington University. And most of the credit goes to the Alaska governor, a virtual unknown before she was selected five weeks ago as McCain's running mate.”

Video: Former McCain political strategist and NBC analyst Mike Murphy and Democratic strategist Paul Begala give their predictions for Thursday’s vice presidential debate.

The Boston Globe: "Republican Sarah Palin - under intense scrutiny for her few unscripted remarks as a candidate and losing the confidence of voters - faces the first extended audition of her capabilities, knowledge, and ability to improvise since she became the nominee. Democrat Joe Biden - a master of televised bombast as a two-time presidential candidate and assertive Senate committee chairman - faces the challenge to find his footing as a secondary figure on stage, balancing the roles of foil, inquisitor, and bystander. The pressure on the first-term Alaska governor has transformed the debate from a typical exchange between top campaign surrogates into a test of whether Palin is qualified for national office."

A new Washington Post/ABC poll finds that six in 10 voters see Palin “as lacking the experience to be an effective president, and a third are now less likely to vote for McCain because of her.”

The New York Daily News spoke to one of Palin's former debate competitors, who said she's no pushover. "Palin sliced and diced the more experienced, data-driven legislator and another foe during some two dozen debates in Alaska's 2006 gubernatorial race. She did it not with sharp discourses on policy, but with the same talent she's shown since becoming the Republican veep choice - a folksy tone, delivered in meandering, run-on sentences that mostly kill the clock but occasionally slice like a knife, Halcro says. Asked about the environment, Palin spoke about naming her daughter Bristol for Alaska's Bristol Bay. Pressed on high gas prices, she talked about her family's struggle to buy a new car. And to Alaska's native population, she deftly reached out by talking about her husband's Yu'pik Eskimo grandparent."

Video: With voter opinion of GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin declining ahead her debate with Sen. Joe Biden, is she bringing down the Republican ticket? Rachel Maddow is joined by former Palin staffer Larry Persily.

Um, is it really that kosher to find out Joe Biden has used his campaign treasury for things like landscaping? The New York Times delves into Biden's finances and reports, "Although he is among the least wealthy members of the millionaires club that is the United States Senate — he and his wife, Jill, a college professor, earn about $250,000 a year — Mr. Biden maintains a lifestyle that is more comfortable than the impression he may have given on the campaign trail. A review of his finances found that when it comes to some of his largest expenses, like the purchase and upkeep of his home and his use of Amtrak trains to get around, he has benefited from resources and relationships not available to average Americans.”

“As a secure incumbent who has rarely faced serious competition during 35 years in the Senate, Mr. Biden has been able to dip into his campaign treasury to spend thousands of dollars on home landscaping and some of his Amtrak travel between Wilmington, Del., where he lives, and Washington. And the acquisition of his waterfront property a decade ago involved wealthy businessmen and campaign supporters, some of them bankers with an interest in legislation before the Senate, who bought his old house for top dollar, sold him four acres at cost and lent him $500,000 to build his new home.”

“There is nothing to suggest Mr. Biden bent any rules in the sale, purchase and financing of his homes. Rather, he appears to have benefited at times from the simple fact of who he is: a United States senator, not just ‘Amtrak Joe,’ the train-riding everyman that the Obama-Biden campaign has deployed to rally middle-class voters."

The New York Times also looks at the issues Palin has focused on in her first 22 months as governor. "When Gov. Sarah Palin meets Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. on Thursday in the vice-presidential debate, even her fellow Alaskans might hear for the first time some of her views on health care reform, education policy and other issues of state government. In her 22 months in office, Ms. Palin has not addressed many of those matters in a significant way, pursuing a narrower agenda rooted in Alaska’s resource-based economy.”

“Ms. Palin has approved increased spending for education and the elderly, sued the federal government for listing the polar bear as a threatened species, and pushed for a bill that would have reduced state regulation of new medical facilities. But by and large, oil and gas issues have dominated her tenure."

The AP went to Huntsville, Ala., and found… "Even in the staunchly Republican South, Palin is facing deep skepticism about her qualifications heading into Thursday night's debate with her Democratic counterpart, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware. The wave of enthusiasm here that greeted the Alaska governor's conservative positions on social and religious issues remains in many quarters, but it has been tempered by uncertainty about her readiness, particularly among moderates."

Joe Six-Pack? "Sarah Palin and her husband have pieced together a uniquely Alaskan income that reached comfortably into six figures even before she became governor, capitalizing on valuable fishing rights, a series of land deals and a patchwork of other ventures to build an above-average lifestyle. Add up the couple's 2007 income and the estimated value of their property and investments and they appear to be worth at least $1.2 million. That would make the Palins, like Democratic vice presidential rival Joe Biden and his wife Jill, well-off but not nearly as wealthy as multimillionaire couples John and Cindy McCain and, to a lesser extent, Barack and Michelle Obama."

It appears that NONE of the presidential candidates can stake a claim to being "average Joes or Janes".  Now, let's get back to the substantive issues please...

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Somewhere tonight, in the spin room, you reporters will find Heather Wilson (R-NM)spinning for Ssrah Palin.  Will someone in the press corps please ask the retiring congresswoman just what happened in the firing of their US Attorney and if she will assure the people that she will cooperate fully with the Special Prosecutor investigating the firings?

It seems to me that if someone is out there as a spokesperson for a campaign, the people should be allowed to assess what weight they will give to her remarks.
Gov. Palin's debate style may work at a state level but her lack of knowledge on the national stage will be very apparent.  The presidency and vice presidendy is not a popularity contest and this country cannot afford 4 more years of being run by the guy or gal you would like to have a beer (or mooseburger) with.
Hope Palin does well enough to stay on the ticket.  Any day McCain has to spend time defending Palin is a bad day for McCain.  He was pretty grumpy in Iowa trying to defend Palin.
My concern is that everyone is jumping on Palin's gaffs, but she is a powerful debator...and McCain campaign is hoping for a "see, I told you so - isn't she great" moment.  That, unfortuately can happen.  I of course wish the Palin who spoke to Katy Couric shows up...but don't count on it.  I have seen the debates from Alaska for Gov. and she did very good.

I love Joe Biden, I hope he comes across great! We need leadership in the White House...and McCain/Palin are just not up to that task.
Joe should be very entertaining to Gov.Palin but force the debate away from McCain cheer leading and play hard ball with the issues..If Palin sounds repetitive then he can box her into a corner and throw away the key...GO JOE!!!
McCain keeps telling us America loves her and every question is a gotcha and the MSM is unfair, etc. The Democrats are playing this debate down, lowering expectations like never before.

The shorter Biden's answers, the greater the chance his opponent becomes into Tina Fey. However, I'm not counting on it. Let her simply defend her record, Bush's record and John McCain's erratic big adventure.
At first, even though I'm a die-hard liberal, I was willing to give Palin a break; I reasoned that even being a small-town mayor, and then governorofanearly unpopulated state, you had to have SOMETHING on the ball.  I figured she was smart, just very, VERY out of her depth.  But after seeing the Couric interviews, I really have to wonder just how bright this very engaging woman really is.  could shereally be Chance the Gardener?
Tonight will prove only whether Palin's good at pure BS – and she might be. That would even show she's qualified for the Top Job, if you think Bush has been a good president.

I remember once passing a short-answer exam with pure BS, but I sure didn't deserve to.
That Was The Alaska Debate, This Is Much Bigger. All Her Talking Points Will Not Get Her Far Here. Can't Wait To See How Skilled She Really Is.
THe stakes are high tonight, since one of every three VP's eventually become president, and in Sara's situation the percentage is that much higher since McCain's age is such a factor. From the snippets of interviews that were granted with Palin, she does not show a readiness by any stretch of the imagination to be the next POTUS. It really scares me that McCain has been so reckless to chose a women like Palin as his running mate. One of the first executive decisions and he blew it. Nice job John.
Sarah's worked for her money, Barack wrote some books, made some speeches, and community organized with ACORN to pressure banks into making unnecessary loans for low-income people that couldn't afford them.

Why don't you guys investigate into issues, like the Democratic party's ties into Freddie and Fannie, who bought subprime loans into securities, under Democratic leadership of Dodd/Frank, Raines/Johnson???
Picking Biden was surely a test of Obama's judgement. Let's judge McCain on that premise. Biden will shine and Palin will show her total lack of knowledge. I don't want to drink with a VP.  I want them to be smarter than me to make the hard decisions it takes to run a country!  So, on another subject!

While none of the Obama supporters are getting over-confident, we are all pleased that Americans are finally seeing what we've seen.  I started to look at Obama after I read his first book, "Dreams of my Father". What a writer and what a life!  He's not one of the priviledged.  His father was a very poor Kenyan and his mother and grand-parents from working class white Kansas stock.  Being bi-racial in America is not easy but he never whined about it--he just kept keeping on....And isn't that THE AMERICAN STORY? As a white woman, 64 and an ex-UAW member, I urge my working class buddies of both sexes and all races to take a good look at this most remarkable guy. Change we can beleive is Obama.
We don't want folksy or Joe 6 pack in the administration.  Frankly, I want someone who is smarter than I and that is not Sarah Palin.
I sincerly hope that Sarah Palin has a GREAT debate. Why? Because it is not necessary for her to embarrass herself for Joe Biden to win the debate.

As a mother of two daughters, I empathize with the enormous amount of pressure on Gov. Palin to do well. For the sake of her kids and her family, I hope she rises to the occasion and does them all proud.

Just as Barack Obama won his debate without John McCain making a complete fool of himself, I wish the same for Sarah Palin. This is not about humiliating Sarah Palin - this is about moving Americ forward - and I still think the best team to do that is Obama /Biden.

Here's hoping we have a GREAT VP Debate tonight - America needs some good news!
Don't be surprised if the "FIRE ALARM IS PULLED" during the debate tonight! (straight from the bush campaign red book)

politicaladattacks.blogspot.com
Could Palin looking dumb be a hoax? I just can't believe a person could be picked for the second highest position in the country and be this dumb. If it is truly a hoax, then it will be the biggest hoax since George W. Bush thought to be qualified for President.
I do not like Sarah Palin and would never vote for McCain with her on the ticket. I don't think she is qualified to be VP and he is way too old and out of touch. But I have to say am starting to feel sorry for her.  The crazy right wingers pumped her up and actually made her think she is qualified to be VP.  Then they stick her out there and her lack of knowledge is showing.  We are in too much trouble in this country to vote for someone we feel comfortable having a beer with.  Look what the last 8 years have done.

Vote for intelligence in the White House, vote Obama/BIden '08
Palin will hold her own in the debate. The issue is whether Biden blows his cool. He's a hothead who has commited one recent gaffe after another and mis-speaks with regularity. His tongue often gets in the way of his eye tooth and he can't see what he is saying. He's a liberal fanatic, self-absorbed just like The Obama Trauma.
Joe Biden better do well in this debate ... he's been preparing for 36 years!
Watching Joe Biden explain Roe vs Wade, actually helped me understand the legal reasoning behind that ruling for the first time. What a contrast to Sarah's answer:"culture of life, uh, states should decide the issue, uh I'm, pro-life." I never appreciated Biden's intelligence and education as much as I have since Sarah came on the scene.

Palin will do great in the debate.  She will get off a few "CANNED & REHERSED" ZINGERS with her shrill voice, smile and try to charm the TV cameras; and the pugnants will say she hit  home run.

The public will say W.T.F.  If this the person they want to ram down our collective throats to be the replacement president of the COUNTRY?!?!?  Oh NO!!!!

This is serious stuff!

You can like her, but deep in your heart,

you know she is not ready...

BUT NEITHER IS Mr. McGOO.

I like her-but won't vote for her!

If Bill Clinton can get by running this country with his wife as VP, then McCain can only do better, especially with Sarah Palin's experience in energy, a topic that both Obama and Biden know absolutely nothing about.
All you need is a laugh track to play after every one of Palin's answers tonight, and you'll have a show better than most scripted sitcoms!
So if John has some money or owns some house like the rest of us then I guess he must be feeling some of the same things we are like the value of his homes going down and his 401 k Sarah is going to kick some butt Biden can't find is way out of a paper bag. What yr did tv come out who was president in 1929 biden wake up demons. What color is obama again white mama right then is he really going to be the first african american.
Palin is an  idiot.  The answers she gives are worse than the ones I used to give on a high school essay exam when I didn't know the answer..
She is also a compulsive liar.  She's classic.  Watch her eyes. When she's getting ready to hatch a whopper, she looks up to her left.
Tonight should be entertaining.  If Gwen Ifill (who McLame and the boys are already trying to discredit) doesn't dumb-down the questions, it will be a lot of fun watching Palin tap dance.
McCaribou in the headlights... WATCH OUT... Disaster Ahead
Palin is NOT CUTE with her snarky, sarcastic "slice like a knife" remarks.

These are serious times in our country and we, the voters, want a qualified VP.   Palin is NOT QUALIFIED --- no matter how cute and folksy she is tonight.

VOTERS ARE NOT STUPID ---- they will see through her.

Joe Biden, with or without his 'gaffes' is a class act --- experienced, extremely knowledgeable and charming!      GO JOE!

OBAMA/BIDEN '08 -- leadership you can TRUST !!

Palin sliced and diced the more experienced, data-driven legislator and another foe during some two dozen debates in Alaska's 2006 gubernatorial race. She did it not with sharp discourses on policy, but with the same talent she's shown since becoming the Republican veep choice - a folksy tone, delivered in meandering, run-on sentences that mostly kill the clock but occasionally slice like a knife, Halcro says.

Hmmmm - sounds like a style that worked during a change election in Alaska, but I don't think it is gonna impress the citizens of the U.S. or convince them that you should be VP.  Stories about your kids are all well and good and a meandering folksy tone can sometimes be endearing, but we are in the midst of a financial crisis.   I really don't care about the fact the your kids like stove-top stuffing and you hate the high gas prices as much as the rest of us.  What's your plan? or at the very least can you recite Mcsame's plan without going off in ten different directions?
I believe we'll see a completely different Palin at the debate. I think Palin's been pulling a fooly on us all this time. Her gibberish is so nonsensicle that it has to be a gimmick designed to lead us all down the wrong path. It's all got to be part of McCain's gambling penchant for drama to get people talking about him again. C'mon, it can't be real!!!
I don't see the debates like you in pundit land.Palin has shown no ability to think on her feet, the deer in the headlights may have worked in alaska, but people in the lower 48 look at it as weakness, being able to memorize talking points will not do,what is she going to do write them on the back of her hand,it sure seem like she was reading talking points during the Curic interview, she kept looking down and reading the talking points like from crib notes. What bs about struggling to have enough to by a car,I did notice in the interview she did at her home that what they had tied to the dock was not a car,not a boat ,not a jet ski,but there was a Float plane tied up.You see once the horse Sh*ts its hard to get it back inside.
I hope Joe Biden does great tonight, he deserves to be VP.  The folksy, Mayberry RFD mentality only goes so far with people that want a serious candidate for political office that will be a good second in command and help the president make good decisions for the next four years.
I am consistently angered that she is running for an office historically held by men who were all treated like they were running for an office that requires knowledge, ability and thick skin to take the jabs. Yet I keep hearing that Joe Biden must take it easy on her. Isn't this a double standard.
If Palin can just play Caribou Barbie and deliver scripted answers she'll come out looking good.  That's why the Right is working so hard to game the refs by smearing Gwen Ifill.  They know their candidate can't handle a follow up question without getting that deer in the headlights look and wandering aimlessly.  If Sarah comes out looking good it will only be because she's been allowed to debate on her terms.
I still am amazed at all the personal attacks on everything about Sarah Palin. Her family, her religion, her love of outdoors, her performance as governor(which even in this article residents of the state still overwhelmingly feel she has done well at)

Let's contrast these attacks to your responses on other attacks:

Her family- when the right attacked Michelle Obama for changing her tune about being proud of her country , well what she said was just all out of context, she did not change it because it hurt the poll numbers(hmm wonder if she goes back to hating her country if Obama loses)

Her religion-I really dont care about a candidate's religious preferences, if she has one fine,if not fine .Unless the religion calls for the extermination of America or it's citizens vs When the stories about Obama and Wright started being a daily topic- well what we then heard is he is denouncing that pastor, never really listened to any of his anti america diatribes, and no he did not denounce him just because of the uproar

Her enjoying fishing and hunting -ok you got me there, that should be objected to, you see nobody is going to call Obama and outdoorsman

The Bridge to Nowhere- I don't even care if she still supports it, sounds like what a local elected official would do, try to get funds to maybe put some of her state residents to work, hmm sounds like the same kind of thing a "community organizer" might try to do.

Yes she hasnt been campaigning all her life so does not have a ready answer to all the questions. Barack Obama basically has been cramming for the past how many years? since he was in the Illinois senate?

The magic wand- no she doesnt have the magic wand like obama so she can't fix all our problems by waving it and saying "PRESTO, CHANGEO'

If you werent so worried that every voter outside the ultra left would be able to connect with this woman you would not be trying to destroy her as vigorously as you are
Could Palin looking dumb be a hoax? I just can't believe a person could be picked for the second highest position in the country and be this dumb. If it is truly a hoax, then it will be the biggest hoax since George W. Bush thought to be qualified for President.

I've considered this possibility...that she's playing possum.

Sorry, but this is a presidential campaign and it's no time for games.

Governor Palin's base of knowledge may be perfect for governing the state of Alaska but I'm afraid that when it comes to the issues facing this country she's in way over her head.
She won't be allowed to just stand there and repeat the same tired lies and lines from her campaign...you know where she was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it but she kept the money and wasted it somewhere else in Alaska...and could we get her mooseburger recipe too?
This debate tonight is most likely a non-event.

Palin will stick to her talking points. Republicans will say, "see, she's not an idiot." Democrats will say, "see, she has to stick to her talking points."

There, I've written all the lines you pundits will need for later tonight.

The only real drama here is whether we'll see the strong debate performance that Biden routinely turned in during the primaries, or we'll see Biden wander off his concise talking points and potentially into a typical Biden-talking-too-much thing.
I do not think that Sarah will perform badly tonight.  Too much rehearsal has occurred.  She will stick to the talking points given her and throw in a jab or two that will be subtle and the audience will find amusing and enjoy.  However, how can anyone in their right mind think, after seeing her solo interviews with just three media personalities on National networks, or feel that she can think on her feet and step up to deal with foreign relationships with people who can think on their feet, are far more educated and who actually have paid attention to all the crisis situations in the world?  Joe SixPack in or near the White House scares me particularly now with so many problems created by and for the Bush administration whose leader was another Joe Six Pack!  I don't want the world to think we are all so stupid that we can buy a canned performance from a convention, out on the stump prepared lines/lies and at a one time very well prepped debate over daily thinking on your feet! When SNL does not even have to change the lines from her minimal interviews, it is bad!  She will be very well prepared by her handlers tonight but that is no excuse to put this inexperienced, under educated, extremist, unethical woman anywhere near the White House especially since the head of her ticket has health issues and is the oldest nominee to run for president ever.
As a woman, I have character issues, concerns, with Sarah Palin.  Why did she say yes to McCain?  Everyone knows the intense scrutiny nation pols get.  Did she only see the up side to this VP bid?  I don't think she calculated the cost to her family.  She has a high-school aged daughter who is pregnant and a 6-7 month old special needs newborn.  I've had to make some difficult career decisions based on the needs of my family.  But I always put my family first.  In my eyes she has not.  She has allowed old white republicans to cloister her, subjugate her, for their purposes.  How is this pushing the equal rights issue forward?  How on earth can any woman view this as a glass ceiling breaker?  I don't get it!
Ohhhhh...i'm so skierred! Here come da'Baracuda!!

She is preparring right now to "WOW" us all with her extensive knowledge and understanding of foreign affiars and complicated economic policy. Everyone grab your bongs (you'll need a few good hits to keep laughing through the tears) and get seated right in front of the TV -- all glassy-eyed. Let them eat cake!! Give us our very own Queen Sarah and let her flap her mindless trap.

It is safe to say that Sarah Baracuda will have her teeth filed to sharp points tonight, compliments of her RNC handlers. Too bad her brain isn't as sharp, but she will get in a zinger or two....that's what is important, right MSNBC??? Getting in a zinger on Joe Biden??? Yeah, that is what you folks consider important.

And tomorrow..."some" of you pundits will be talking about these "zingers", ignoring how stupid the woman sounds overall. Yes I can see it now...sweet lil' Sarah will draw the little pundits like flies to buttermilk -- hanging on her every zinger!

She will stand up there and smile mindlessly, and give us some snarky platitudes and irrelevant dribble about how she reads "all the publications that have been put in front of her" (Highlights Magazine and Reader's Digest), and knows so much about foreign policy because she lives across the "street" from Russia -- where that old Pooti-Poot might start "rearing his head".

In case you missed it, the term "rearing his head" is an overused Biblical reference describing the appearance of the Devil or some Demon. This type of reference tells me allot about what this woman has on her small mind. She does not think in rational terms, but in religious nonsensical terms; Good vs Eeeeeeevil. If elected, with the Old Fart's blessing, Baracuda might even help start a religious wars...starting with the Great Demon Putti-Poot across the street! Cheney would be proud of his protege'!

If Joe Biden showed up in drag, would that even the playing field in the minds of these pundits who scream sexism everytime a difficult question gets asked of dear lil' Sarah?

So disgusted with what you folks consider to be "news".

I think it's one thing to have an opponet give you a gotcha moment, albeit when you do it to yourself and ask for more signifies that one of the tools in the shed is dull.

NEED THE COMMERICALS START ALREADY!
"She did it not with sharp discourses on policy, but with the same talent she's shown since becoming the Republican veep choice - a folksy tone, delivered in meandering, run-on sentences that mostly kill the clock..."

Oh yeah, good luck trying to get by the american people with that kind of performance.  In Alaska she was a big fish in a very little pond.  Well, it's the big pond now, lady, and you are not up to it.  I can't quite see all the senior citizens who just lost 30% of their retirement portfolios giving a cr@p about her folksy tone or her little zingers.  Give the american people credit for knowing a bs artist when they see one.
I'm more worried about Joe than Sarah. I love Joe Biden but my God, he screws up like every time he opens his mouth. I don't know about tonight. I can't watch. It's like watching two runaway trains collide and waiting to see which one goes off the track. Sarah the Barracuda or Biden the Bulldog?
I DON'T WANT A POTENTIAL CLASS CLOWN NOR A GOV. THAT'S IN CLASS LEARN AS YOU GO!  THAT'S THE MISTAKE.
palin reminds me of my first wife, good looking but dumber than a rock.
Joe better bring this up somehow--so much for McCain/Palin and their BS earmarks!

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/24/palin.road.to.nowhere/index.html
If Palin reaches back into her Alaskan debate performances without a clear grasp of the current and future national issues, she will lose the debate.  Plain and simple.  America's has got some real and crucial issues to deal with over the next 4 to 8 years from the economy to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

If Palin trys appears to folksy and "average Joe", speaking in generalities, while Biden answers more directly and authoritatively, Palin will be done.
"Gov. Palin's debate style may work at a state level but her lack of knowledge on the national stage will be very apparent." gramma4obama

Thanks for summing this contest up so well,  gramma4obama.
----
It seems unlikely that Palin will be able to "folksy" her way through the debate tonight, but that does remain to be seen. Remember the lesson from the 1st McCain/Obama debate. No matter what the punditry says, it's the polls and more than them, the vote count that matters. With just over one month til the election day and early voting already underway in key states, we will see the reality soon enough.

Go Joe!
