Palin, a female Giuliani?

In Alaska, everyone now knows, Sarah Palin is treated like a treasure. Even if her popularity has dwindled a bit in the last few weeks as the Alaskans wonder if their government has been taken over by the McCain campaign, the governor's ratings are still sky-high. That  means that some of those who oppose her often do so in secret, especially when the flood of reporters came to town in September.

“She has the ability to make men stupid,” one woman active in Republican politics told me.

Her comment seemed as good as any at explaining McCain's vice presidential candidate. And of course this woman was one of a minority in Alaska: those who despise Sarah Palin. For the truth is quite clear, after I spent three weeks in Alaska, Palin inspires love and loyalty on the one hand, and fear and hatred on the other. She is, above all, divisive.

In some ways, as I interviewed Alaskans about her, it became clear that she seemed to have the attributes of another politician I had once covered, thousands of miles away. She could be seen as a female version of the younger Rudolph Giuliani. It seemed almost fitting that he introduced her at the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis, his flashing charisma a buildup to her own. They are counterweights to each other.

Even her remarkable political ascent seems to parallel his. She and McCain lose no opportunity to point to the way she took on the “good ol' boy” network of the Republican Party. And so she did, launching an assault on ethics violations by the Chairman of Alaska's Republican Party.

Giuliani too, who made his mark as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, had once clashed with the New York Republican Party. In the 80s he was known to have tense relations with then Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, then seen as the power broker of the Republican Party. The public learned, apparently from Giuliani's office, that D'Amato had interceded on behalf of known Mafia figures Paul Castellano and Vincent "The Chin" Gigante. And in 1994, Giuliani even endorsed a Democrat for governor instead of D'Amato's chosen pick.

For Palin, as she ran for governor, it was her rejection of the state's Republicans that helped her achieve her stature as a politician who soared above party lines. Her most important enemies in Alaska were the entrenched Republicans

Like Giuliani, she is surrounded by a team of fanatically loyal operatives. Giuliani had Christina Lategano and Randy Mastro. Mastro has stayed with him for more than 20 years, a remora fish that would never leave. Palin, though, has her Meg Stapleton, who does daily briefings for her, attacking those who have slighted her in Alaska. She has her political aides like Frank Bailey, or her administrative aide Ivy Frye, who emailed her, “You're so awesome.”

Also like Giuliani, Palin seems to have a vindictive side. I remember how Giuliani, back as mayor of New York, used to enforce his will on those who slighted him. The New York Times ran an article this year recalling how, when former mayors Dinkins and Koch critiqued then-Mayor Giuliani, their official portraits were quickly removed from public view in City Hall.

Once when a driver in The Bronx exposed Mayor Giuliani to ridicule by uncovering a police red light trap near the Bronx Zoo, the NYPD put the man in cuffs on a 13-year-old traffic warrant.

“Mr. Schillaci was posing as an altruistic whistle-blower,” Mayor Giuliani weighed in. “Maybe he's dishonest enough to lie about police officers.”

Sarah Palin, of course, seems to settle a score with a vengeance.

“She carries a grudge,” as one official in Alaska put it.

It was this that seemed to drive her and her gubernatorial administration as they pushed to end the career of a state trooper who had a clashed with the Palin family during a custody battle with Palin's sister.

Yep. You're either with her - or else she is against you. All those folks in Alaska have to DEAL with her when she returns. For self preservation, they will be exceedingly cautious with their voices.
"as they pushed to end the career"?? Did I miss the results of the investigation? I thought those were just allegations, not facts of anykind?
Palin should be asked what FDIC is.  I am guessing that will throw her off. She has no intellectual curiosity at all... How can this imbecile be the leader of the free world.
I'm so pleased that we may have someone who is a 72year old's heartbeat away from the presidency who is vindictive, holds a grudge, punishes her enemies, took six years to get through college, can't answer a question with an intelligible response, and would not support the values of most of the hockey/baseball/soccer/football moms I know.  The population of the county I live in is half the population of Alaska so I'm not impressed by her "executive experience".  As for her popularity in Alaska, that must be why 1400 people came out for an anti Sarah rally in Anchorage.
I do not endorse any political party and I always vote for the person(s) I deem best qualified for the office(s) they are elected to fill. I am a registered voter but the party affiliate does not matter to me. I have been reading, watching and listening to nearly everything political on both sides of this campaign.
I was praying that Sen. Obama would not choose Sen. Clinton as his running mate because the Clinton's have way too much "baggage". I was pleased with the choice of Sen. Biden. Then I watched to see who Sen. McCain would choose as his running mate. I was in shock when his choice was revealed. I wanted someone really qualified to assume the position of the Presidency if something - old age, assassin, stroke, Alzheimer's - prevented McCain from completing his term.
I am not happy with Gov. Sarah Palin. She says that it's time to have an ordinary citizen in the office of VP or even President. I don't want someone in office who is an ordinary citizen, soccer Mom, Joe Six-Pack, etc. I know a lot of people but I can't think of one I would want as Pres. if McCain was elected and died - or had a stroke. With the current  condition of our country, our declining position in the world view, and the shaky world economy, we absolutely cannot have someone so inexperienced who may get called upon to assume the presidency!
Gov. Sarah Palin has stated she didn't blink when Sen. McCain asked her to be his running mate. She said "Yes!" Palin reminds me of a young girl who is so in love with the idea of being asked, engaged, and having a big wedding that the girl gets divorced soon after the big wedding because marriage was hard and not what she expected.  Palin is in love with the asking, the campaigning, the prestige and fame.  But running the country is hard and not what she is equipped to handle. And I am not at all pleased with McCain's erratic judgment in choosing Palin, voting with Bush - including the Iraq war - 90% of the time, suspending his campaign, wanting to skip the debate, lying so blatantly about his own and Obama's records, etc.  I do not want someone so erratic in the office of the presidency.
That's a stretch.  I don't even like Giuliani (and I'm a New Yorker) but you've gotta back up the comparison with a bit more than that... You begin with Giuliani's experience as a prosecutor which was the basis for a lot of his intraparty squabbles.  As far as I can tell, from interviews with Alaskan Republican like state Sen. Lyda Green, Palin's clashes are because she basically used people when it was convenient then stabbed them in the back when it wasn't.  It's a huge stretch to compare her to Giuliani, whose clashes came because of his prosecutorial work, not just because of his political stair-stepping and back-stabbing.
Checkout my piece on Youth Voter Registration.  For every 100 registered voters aged 18-24, the democrats accrue a 9 vote advantage.

A writer from The Nation is live-blogging the debate tonight.

I'm trying to pass this around because, if action meets the talk, it looks like a number of conservatives are descending on his blog tonight.

If it helps, he's going to award Powell's gift cards for good comments.

Yep, it's Rudy in drag.

Sounds great to me.

If I ever need someone to "off" an antagonist, I'll be sure to give her a call.

She makes me stupid.

First Read, this story comes across as a cheap hatchet job that should be beneath you.  I'm an independent, with no axe to grind for Palin or any other candidate.  But this is an unbalanced story that even has overtones of meanness. I mean, I don't know Mr.Mastro at all, but in calling him a remora fish Mr. Roston equates  "fanatical loyalty" to being a bloodsucking parasite. I always thought loyalty in politics, and employment, was a good thing. Silly me.

Sounds great to me.

No, I think she resembles Cheney more.  She charms everyone on stage, but has hidden agendas (Palin first, not "Country first").  This is why I won't vote for McCain/Palin.  With the nation and world in such a complicate mess, they are not qualified to take on the huge task of P & VP.  An old ex-POW and hocky mom.  This ain't Hollywood, and this ain't the time for more cartoons!  I thought we all wanted Bush/Cheney out of the white house!!!!
Great.  Sounds like the kind of person who would invade a country and spend tens of billions because "he {Saddam} tried to kill my dad."
Domenico, good piece. She definitely knows how to use a knife it seams. But for crying out loud, she can not converse intelligently on anything pertinent to the job. Even if she got into a discussion on her supposed strong subject, energy, she'd likely drift off topic. I wonder what Boone Pickens thinks of her energy credentials?

Mr 911 just needs to go away, I'm afraid his mouth opens before his brain is engaged.
Sarah Palin comes across as brash and a know it all...which we all know by now if it isn't written down for her....well, she knows absolutely nothing!!!
Try as she may Sarah Palin is not engaged enough on all the issues that come with holding the office of VP.
Do we need a female version of Rudi Mr 911....I think not....they may both be great for the Republican base
but that is where it stops.
America doesn't need "mouthpieces or talking heads"
they want action and leadership....sadly lacking here I'm afraid.

I'm going to be watching for the hidden earphone (you know, hair down, boxy, but stylish jacket) especially if she gives any lucid answers.
It is interesting how quickly information can be put together on someone. I like your comparisons but feel Sara is her own women. From what I can gather of her, short of the one sided interviews and comments  the media makes, I for one am impressed. She is exactly what we need. Someone who doesn't have all the connections and obligations. We need a business manager more then we need a spokesmen. Smooth talk is cheap an really hasn't made much difference in the past.   30 year political career. What? and we need more of that?
just like giuliani, but stupid. for Christ's sake he was a prodigy and was made the US Attorney for the Southern district of New York at a relatively young age. She is just like GWB- but not quite as bright. yeah he used to be popular in Texas too. And Sarah Palin is already less popular in AK than she was in August. what the 3 of them have in common is the Authoritarian instinct. 'Nuff said.
VIVA RUDY! Rudy Giuliani would have been a better VP than Palin on ANYDAY OF THE WEEK!
How can this imbecile be the leader of the free world.

Unfortunately we have been exposed to dubya's stupidity for 8 years.  Stupidity becomes relative with that kind of exposure.  Can we recover?
The recent comments by Gov. Palin about her being a "Joe Six Pack" type candidate for VP are disturbing; mainly because we've had "Joe Six Pack" as PRESIDENT the last 8 years and that hasn't worked too well for us.
McCain may have voted with Bush 90+% of the time, but it's Palin who REMINDS me of him; painful to watch, and hard to swallow that he is in such a position of power and responsibility.  I see the Giuliani comparison, but she’s more like W. to me.

side note: Giuliani and Palin do both have alleged improprieties concerning their dealings with their respective police forces though.

Here we go with the Obama Robin Hood tax increase.
I don't think that just b/c she can speak coherently means that she is answering the questions. She keeps averting the questions and if she says "reform" one more time and I am going to throw up in my mouth!
Palin---vindictive, childish former "beauty" queen---Is NOT qualified in any shape or form to be VP---Honey, you are NO Hillary Clinton.....

And thank god she is NOT!
