Obama slams McCain with jobs report

Posted: Friday, October 03, 2008 1:39 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
ABINGTON, Pa. -- Barack Obama applauded his running mate’s performance in last night’s debate, saying that the "Scranton boy done good" and contrasting his rival's positions in the debate with the latest job numbers.

In a speech before some 6,000 people gathered at a windy high school football stadium in a Philadelphia suburb, Obama mentioned a “noteworthy” moment from the St. Louis match up between Biden and Sarah Palin: when the governor said the Democrats’ economic policy would kill jobs.

“I wonder if she turned on the news this morning, because it was just reported that America has experienced its ninth straight month of job loss,” he said.

America has lost more than three quarters of a million jobs since January, and Obama is hoping to convince concerned voters that a vote for his ticket is a vote for more jobs. He said his economic policies would create millions of new jobs, including five million in clean energy technology and two million in infrastructure. He repeated a common attack line that he and Biden use to cast McCain as out of touch, saying that only two weeks ago the Arizona senator was still saying the fundamentals of the economy were strong.

”When Sen. McCain and his running mate talk about job killing, that’s something they know a thing or two about, because the policies they’ve supported and are supporting are killing jobs in America every single day," he said.

"I am here to tell you that we cannot afford four more years of this,” he added. “We need to do what we did in the 1990s and create millions of new jobs and not lose them. We need to do what we did in the 1990s and make sure people’s incomes are going up and not down. We need to do what a guy named Bill Clinton did in the 1990s and put people first again.”

The Republican National Committee responded in a statement calling Obama's economic plan "dangerous."

"Unlike John McCain, Barack Obama thinks the answer to our nation’s struggling economy is to kill job creation with higher taxes and oppose competitive tax rates that would keep jobs here in America," said RNC spokeswoman Amber Wilkerson. "As our nation faces an economic crisis, America’s middle class deserves a President who will implement real reform in Washington and lead our economy back on track – not Barack Obama’s dangerous proposals that will obstruct job creation and grow the size of Washington’s bureaucracy

Today, Obama continued to paint McCain as a deregulator who was trying to change his stripes, even comparing him to Civil Rights leader and former Democratic presidential candidate Jesse Jackson. For 26 years, McCain has been for deregulation and tax cuts for the rich, Obama said.

”He hasn’t been getting tough on CEOs. He hasn’t been getting tough on Wall Street, so suddenly a crisis comes and the polls change and suddenly he’s out there talking like Jesse Jackson,” he said. “Come on. It shows how out of touch he really is.”

After the event, Obama was headed home to Chicago to celebrate his 16th wedding anniversary before hitting the trail again Saturday in Virginia. He plans to spend several days, starting tomorrow evening, in Asheville, NC, preparing for the next presidential debate.

Right on Barack!!!!!!!!!!  Enjoy your anniversary!!!
Joe did GREAT last night.

Obama/Biden 08
Looking through McCain's response here...hold on a second...still looking...still looking...

THERE IT IS!  "Higher taxes"!

I knew the lie would appear somewhere!

Raising taxes is what we need to do! And Obama is just the man to do it!!
When I get in office, I'll raise taxes. And if businesses don't start to hire people, I'll raise them again.
You go Obama! Republicans, especially John McCain should look at our economy today and think about their policies. Trickle down has been proven now to be ineffective. The last 8 years have been their testing ground and the evidence in in. We need change!!
McHopeless!  Nothing changes . . . oh except your poll numbers.  They are going DOWN!!  You are going DOWN!!  How does the GOP try in anyway to blame the Democrats for this financial meltdown and this abhorrent job loss.  Yeah, they been in charge in the congress anyway for about two years one problem: in the senate right now they've just been about even with Joe Stab-In-The-Back-berman helping the GOP filibuster almost every piece of worthwhile piece of legislation to come out of the house!  So yes you're at fault McInsane!  As Chris Matthews says: You can't run from what you are!  Stop trying to not wear the uniform of the Republicans!  That is what you are!
its nice to have a candidate that tells you how jobs will be created, and has ideas to put in place to improve the standing of the citizens of this country.

McCain talks about job creation, but has no plans or examples.  thats the difference between these candidates.
Heckuva job Georgie and Johnny!  Way to lose 750,000 jobs this year with your Voo Doo Tinkle Down economics that have left us regular Americans all wet from the wrong Golden Shower.  Yeah we're going to thank you properly this November 4th by getting rid of the self serving repugnant ones in the White House and Congress.

Only Obama/Biden will protect the jobs of middle class Americans.  Only they will bring the blue collar good paying unionized manufacturing jobs back by getting rid of the neocon tax cuts for shipping jobs to China and giving real American companies tax breaks to create jobs here.  Only they will end the "Darth" Cheney tax loophole of putting corporations like Halliburton offshore in order to evade paying their fair share of corporate taxes.

Go Obama/Biden 08/12!
Good substantive speech once again Barrack. As usual your team comes up with facts, solutions and substance.

Keep hammering those points. Just stay focused, substantive and factual. It resonates more to people. After 8 years of being lied to, we've had enough.

McCain would probably steal a couple of ideas, please be quick to call them on it.

DON'T LET THIS ELECTION BE STOLEN ONCE AGAIN. We can't afford it anymore.
Why does the GOP and McCain continue on this raise taxes & spending rage?  It's not true.  So I ask myself, why doesn't Obama counterattack this?  Also, why doesn't he start attacking his 'reform' line?  Joe Biden debunked the Maverick line last night, let's him them hard on reform.

Holding my breath until the Obama landlslide victory on Nov 4.
Is "dangerous" the only adjective the Republicans know?
Remember the last populist we elected, Jimmy Carter? Did you like waiting in lines for gas? Did you like double digit inflation and double digit interest on your mortgage? Did you like being lectured by the POTUS about how rotten you were for being upset with him? Get ready for more of the same if Obama gets elected.
I have a question for all of you who think Obama will kill jobs?  What is the average revenue/income for SMALL businesses?  I think we need clarity from the McCain camp as to what they define as a small business.. I am quit sure it is much different than Obama's definition..Because guess what I own a SMALL business and my revenue/income is NOT over $250k a year down here in revenue challenged northern Mississippi.. so under Obama's plan I would get a tax increase.. sounds good to me..I might even get a tax break...
McFalin are out of touch. It will all be over on Nov. 5 and she can go back to Alaska and hunt whatever and he can go to the home.
What I have noticed about Obama is that he is planning on coming home strong.  You would think he would be worn out, but his rhetoric is much more forceful.  That is what needs to be done to win.  I hope on Tuesday when McCain goes on and on about him not understanding, that he let’s go and explains (with respect) that he clearly understands, but vehemently disagrees.
...but Republicans know how to create jobs...they said it, it must be true.  Wow, which party was at the helm when 750,000 jobs were lost this year?

They are saying a lot of things other than what I've witnessed for the past 8 years (counting the first 'W' election campaign, cuz' if you'll recall, he said he was a uniter, not a divider. - he's not real strong with the math and the calculator, if you know what I mean.)

McCain says he knows how to 'win wars' - he's saving that little secret for after the election.  Funny, nothing in his resume supports that he knows how to win wars.  He knows how to pound rhetoric about it, though.  Boy howdy - (wink).

I feel safer just thinking about how safe they tell me I am.  My retirement plan, so secure, they told me so.
No more TAX and SPEND Republicans! No more Republican BIG GOVERNMENT!
OBAMA/BIDEN 08
The unemployment figures are critical and they
do not include people whose unemployment has
run out!
Mccain/Bush policies have almost destroyed our
country.
ENOUGH!!
I can always tell people that don't listen.. Barrack Obama said that he will give a tax BREAK and remove the capital gains tax for STARTUP SMALL BUSINESSES.. I am not the smartest guy in the world but it seems like that would help create jobs and promote the GROWTH of SMALL businesses..
Obama/Biden are so clear in how they want to lead the country. Every time a pundit says "we don't have enough details" I feel like punching the TV/computer. All plans have to be appropriate to the time they are implemented. At least Obama is telling us. Unlike McShame/"Sarah Wants a Cracker".
I am happy that My senator voted NO also my reps.Only Levin sucked up to Bush.
The McChicken Campaign and the RNC have become so predictable and pathetic in their responses that the least they could do is try to inject a little humor by adding "Take That!" ot all of them!
BH Obama said:  Tha his economic policies would create millions of new jobs, including five million in clean energy technology and two million in infrastructure.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ahh, government jobs! But for every job the government creates, it destroys three private sector jobs. Private sector jobs that actually produce something the people want. "Clean Engergy Technologies" sounds good, but that's all research with any benefits from it, if there are any benefits, years and decades away from now.
Get ready for a bigger sucking sound, if that's even possible, coming from Washington DC.
MCcain has lied about being Miss congeniality award in Senate. Actually he has won it twice. Seriously check it out
Russia used to have full employment too. The government made you work in the fields else you didn't get your daily government rations of watered down soup and stale bread.
I promise that you all will be happy!! Vote for me!!!
The Republican National Committee responded in a statement calling Obama's economic plan "dangerous."
get real, the last two weeks have been dangerous, you out of touch, stupid republican. if barack does half as bad as you guys have the last 8 years, then this counrty will be better off!!!
on the lighter side,
Obama was headed home to Chicago to celebrate his
16th wedding anniversary, OK BARACK you do know its 16 years not 15 as you said last week, keith O had you as a worse person because you got that wrong. i know i know its seems like it was yesterday!!!
i hope michelle did not bop you in the head for that one!! i know my wife did when i got that wrong.
Remember when polticans in power ran on their party's record not away from it.
It's clear that McCain is in "running scared" mode.  He has voted consistently against all bills regarding minimum wage adjustments and new monies for job creation.  This week the dirty attack adds will be amped up to a new level.  His talking points seem to finally be falling on deaf ears - the American public is tired of Bush/McCain economic policy and on November 4th, with an Obama/Biden win, they will be put to rest forever.  Obama/Biden 08' to save our country!
When I get in office, I'll raise taxes. And if businesses don't start to hire people, I'll raise them again.
BHO Chicago (Sent Friday, October 03, 2008 2:08 PM)
Please tell us all how many businesses you've started and run sucessfully? Thought so.
Way to go Sen. Obama!  We have steadily lost jobs over the past 8 years and with McCain/Palin it will only get worse.  McCain is NOT the same man he was before. His only objective now is the presidency and he doesn't care how he gets there or how many Americans he steps on doing it. Country first.. it's just a slogan, and if I hear the word 'maverick' again I think I'm going to puke.
I can always tell people that don't listen.. Barrack Obama said that he will give a tax BREAK and remove the capital gains tax for STARTUP SMALL BUSINESSES.. I am not the smartest guy in the world but it seems like that would help create jobs and promote the GROWTH of SMALL businesses..
Todd, NC (Sent Friday, October 03, 2008 2:18 PM)
You got one thing right Todd, you're not the smartest guy in the world. Startups are notorious for not making any money, and thus don't pay takes anyway. Established businesses, the businesses that employ lots of people and that make products that people want, they'll be the ones that pay the high taxes Obama wants them to pay. Those businesses of course will pass those taxes on to their consumers by raising their prices, or ship the jobs overseas.
Just think of how many peope will lose their jobs while Obama is negotiating with the terroirist, and we're attacked again.
No more Charge and Spend Republicans.  It's time we start paying as we go.  Isn't it ironic that all it took for the "fiscally conservative"  house members to vote for the bailout was a little more PORK?
Stop whining about McSame and the economy...it is fundamentally sound you bunch of whiners.
Symore Gunns...how conveinient to leave out the true last populist President, Bill Clinton. I beleive he created astranomical economic prosperity and jobs.
