The Boss and Obama's 'Promised Land'

Posted: Sunday, October 05, 2008 3:02 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC's Cat Corrigan and Abby Livingston
PHILADELPHIA -- Bruce Springsteen hit the streets of Philadelphia with a mission yesterday: to elect Barack Obama. The Obama team estimated that 50,000 people showed up to see the Boss's free concert in the heart of the City of Brotherly Love. A native son of neighboring New Jersey, Springsteen's songs and message were targeted to Pennsylvania's working men and women.

Just hours before the concert, Obama staffers hastily broke down a platform of risers set up for network cameras because they obscured the view of the people in the streets. When Springsteen climbed onstage, he came sans E-Street Band, and was clad in jeans and a plain plaid shirt.

His set kicked off with "Promised Land," a song he performed during John Kerry's 2004 presidential run.  He later followed up with the Kerry theme song, "No Surrender." In a nod to his 2004 performances, he said, "I tried this four years ago. This time we're winning."

Mid-concert, Springsteen pulled out written remarks he had prepared for the event. His speech was as much an homage to Obama as it was a scathing critique of the Bush administration, which he called "a disaster."

He continued, "I've spent 35 years writing about America and its people and the meaning of the American promise. A promise handed down right here in this city. Our everyday citizens have justifiably lost faith in its meaning."

With that flourish, he launched into his de facto theme song for Obama, "The Rising."  The tune, originally written for the firefighters who died in the World Trade Center, has taken on an evangelical pro-Obama interpretation in the campaign. Springsteen sang and preached the Obama gospel, performing a solemn and rare acoustic version of the song.

To finish the uncharacteristically short set, Springsteen strummed his guitar to the crowd chants of "Yes we can!" which then morphed into Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land."

As Springsteen walked off the stage, he said, "It's up to you now."

With Election Day a month away and voting registration in Pennsylvania ending on Monday, the gathering was as much about political tactics and registering voters as it was about musical inspiration. The number of volunteers with clipboards prowling the event for unregistered voters sometimes seemed to rival the number of unregistered voters themselves. Leading up to the Springsteen appearance, appeals were made to text message the campaign, the same tactic used at Obama's acceptance nomination speech at Invesco Field to give the Obama team a built-in database of phone numbers to use in the final days of the Colorado campaign.

Fabulous, I love Springsteen. He is a true American hero deserving of his timeless popularity.

I wish the republicans would listen to his message.
Politics is always more about timing than about the net benefit or net harm in policy. The prime objective is to maximize the amount of benefit before the next election or the president’s exit and the amount of harm that is delayed until after that time. Bush’s economic rescue package was no exception.
I was at that rally to check out "The Boss" and to observe the number of people in the audience.  I was particularly impressed with the amount of young people in the audience, and the diversity.  I saw young faces, old faces, blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, gays, straights, etc.  Pretty much every ethinc group was represented in the crowd.  This is a crowd you'd never see at a McCain/Palin rally because these are the people they DON'T care about.  These are the people that the GOP despises because they don't represent their ideology.  Obama doesn't represent their ideology, which is why they, particularly John McCain, are AFRAID OF HIM!  It's not really because of his race per se, but of what it represents.  It represents an end to the status quo of old white men running this country, and they're simply not ready to give up that power.  That's why we're going to see more attacks, lies, and distortions from the McCain/Palin campaign.  Stay strong PA.  Obama has us in his corner, but if we're going to keep PA blue, we need to hold fast to the ideas that Obama represent.  An idea of unity and prosperity for ALL Americans, not just the ones who vote for him.  This is America's best hope for change, and to paraphrase Ms. Obama, for the first time in a long time, I'm proud of my country.

Obama/Biden '08!

Get out your kleenex and hankies folks!!! This is an AMAZING speech by AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer Richard Trumka who offers this moving defense of Obama against racial attacks. It is about 7 minutes long. Please pass it along. You will choke on tears with pride:

BO/JOE 08!
The people gotta know about their freedoms..the republicans have made a mockery of them for years.
It's the hope of all Americans to vote out the rumor mongers and war mongers ..

We need Obama/Biden even more now..
PS
Palin was in San Francisco today...?
Was she picking up any newspapers?..
I'm sick and tired of references to Obama being compared to a religious or evangelical figure.NO ONE in Obama's campaign claims that to be even partially true, nor have I heard even ONE supporter claim that they support all his policies. It is a label by his opponents and satirists, and does not belong in a news column, paper or show.
Obama's next ad...I hope!

I think you can tell from Springsteen's songs that he understands the everyday working man and woman -- not just in New Jersey or Pennsylvania or Ohio or Michigan, but all across this country.

He's the boss! Thank you Bruce, for your efforts now and in the past. YES WE CAN.
---------------

Americans everywhere are realizing that folksy BS is just BS... it's the economy, McStupid!

Oh.. and as Maureen Dowd said recently: True Mavericks don brand themselves...
Obama should get John Mellencamp to perform a free concert in Indiana.  Lets turn that state blue!
McThuselah is toast.  Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, Nevada, Michigan, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Missouri, Indiana, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Delaware, Oregon, California, Washington, D.C, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, and Hawaii are all going to be in Obama's Electoral corner this November 4th.  McFog will go down in history for running one of the worst campaigns ever. McSenile's erratic behavior shows we can't trust him with the remote control to the television, let alone the Button and the Launch Codes. By picking a Moose Shooting MILF as his running mate, McAlzheimers has solidified the notion that he is truly McInsane. He should retire with his 2nd wife (the blond Morticia) to one of his 13 McMansions via one of his 27 McForeign Cars and howl at clouds.
America: This is the question for you: Do we want leaders who are everyday folks, or do we want leaders who understand everyday folks?

I need empathy from our leaders and we want them to relate to Joe Six Pack.

That said, I don't want my next door neighbor Joe Six Pack, who is knee deep in credit card debt to be my President. Nor do I want Gov.Palin to be my President, unless she can demonstrate she is not allergic to complex issues.

Presidency is not a game that any Joe Six Pack can handle. I do want my President to fight for the Joe Six Pack. Understand the difference before you vote.
Thank you Bruce Springsteen.  You're right, it's "about America and its people and the meaning of the American promise. A promise handed down right [there] in [that] city...." And, our everyday citizens have justifiably lost faith in its meaning.  That's why Obama says "Hope not Fear."
this is becoming a big joke, this election year is unbelieveable,,this a mockery to the great presidents you would think obama is god not a man and if this man is involved with ayers and all these others who have made assaults on america, then we americans not the media need to think this through, what are we doing this is not history this, this man is being put in office by who no because if hillary 18 million and he had 18 million  and thats with the media blackballing her ,i think the american people now need to put a stop to this before its a done deal,i do not want a man as president that knows the people he knows, ayres and both paster, don't listen to these people get on the internet check it out for yourselves, listen to hannity and lou dobbs, oraily, listen to these not cnn or msnbc, people a least give these people the benifit of dout before you put obama in office, something is wrong this time at least think about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
