Obama camp: McCain health plan 'a disaster'

Posted: Monday, October 06, 2008 3:17 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones

The Obama campaign kept the focus on healthcare Monday, this time seeking to draw attention to an article in today's Wall Street Journal that outlined how John McCain’s proposals would cut funding for Medicare and Medicaid in order to keep his plan budget-neutral.

The Journal reported that McCain would cut Medicare and Medicaid funding by $1.3 trillion dollars over the next decade --  based on estimates by independent analysts -- and use those savings to fund tax credits to help people purchase health coverage. The paper said the campaign had not given a specific figure for the cuts, but did not dispute the analysts' estimate.

Two battleground state surrogates, former Florida Sen. Bob Graham and Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, hosted the call. Both states have large populations of elderly voters.

Medicare and Medicaid serve seniors, the disabled and the poor. Graham said McCain’s plan would be disastrous for the oldest, the poorest and the sickest Americans, and would hurt state budgets.

“This plan would be a disaster. It would cut Medicare and Medicaid by over 20 percent over the next 10 years. It would dramatically reduce quality of health care for older Americans and the poorest and sickest of Americans, while at the same time adding to the burden of state governments,” he said. “Under Medicaid there is  a set of benefits that are legally required of the state to provide. If the federal government reduces its level of support then that is just more of a burden that states – which are already in an extremely overextended basis – will have to pick up.”

Casey said some 2.2 million older Pennsylvanians served by Medicare and 1 million children served by Medicaid would be adversely affected by McCain’s proposal.

“What this health care plan indicates is that John McCain is out of touch with what Americans are going through. People are struggling as they never have before with this economy,” he said. “You have to wonder about what John McCain and his running mate, what their priorities are for America. Privatizing Social Security, gutting Medicare, deregulating health care is not putting country first, it’s putting radical, misguided, reckless ideology ahead of the interests of your country and ahead of the interests of families in America, especially older citizens and very vulnerable Americans.”

Monday’s conference call came on the heels of a weekend during which the senator repeatedly bashed McCain on the stump for health care proposals he said could spell the end of the country’s employer-based health care system and could leave many Americans unable to afford coverage.

Graham said Obama would try to improve the employee-based health care system rather than “blowing it up” as McCain would do, while Casey said McCain’s plan to tax employer-provided health benefits showed he was “not living in the real world” and said he would “like to see John McCain survive without his government-provided health insurance.”

A focus on the economy has helped Obama to gain support in several states and put his rival on the defensive even in solidly Republican states that George Bush won in the last two elections, places like Florida and North Carolina.  Now the Democratic nominee is seeking to expand his discussion of pocketbook issues to health care, arguing that reform of the system is necessary to shore up the economy and help businesses compete.

Typical Republican health care.
"Graham said Obama would try to improve the employee-based health care system rather than “blowing it up” as McCain would do ..."
--Patching the existing system really isn't going to solve the problem, either.  I would encourage people to look at options outside of the Democrat or Republican parties on this issue of healthcare and their political solutions.  There are good ideas out there.  And that's all I have to say.
CHECK MATE! LOL...Suck it Pawlenty and the other guy from Florida on MTP.
Oops, not MTP...ABC with George.
This is really disastrous for health care in the country - a good part employer provided. With a health care plan like that, no wonder McCain and Palin are focusing on guilt by association.

Obama and Ayers are not friends by any account without bias, Dumplin. A young man gets a chance to chair a board he takes it - he doesnt ask if any other member had a bad past. That is the job of the foundation - and the law since felons can not serve on board (in this case, not Obama's doing but Ayers was never convicted of anything). No one goes to an interview at Google or any job that advances their career and asks if any colleague they serve with has a past. That is why McCain was also friends with Gordon Liddy a confessed bomber.

Now Palin attending Alaskan Independence Party (AIP) whose objective is secession and her husband being a registered member, and giving speeches at their convention as recently as 2006. That is a direct association not guilt by association. McCain being censured by congress on his role in Keating 5. That is direct association.
Uh, let me guess:

McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds thinks Senator Obama is wrong, and doesn't have the judgement, character and experience America needs?

Go back to the well you unoriginal, overpaid parrot.

And take your canidate and his under investigation running mate with you.

Obama '08
Issues Issues Issues: Thanks Senator Barack Hussein Obama. Yeah I can spell your whole name, and it doesn't bother me one bit that your middle name is Hussein. In fact, I can't wait to call you PRESIDENT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA.
Health care?! Who cares about health care? I want to hear Simple Sarah talk about how he goes bowling with OBL on Tuesday nights.
Today, even elderly, wealthy Republicans are losing money hand over fist.  McOld is now crusty...toast.  Watch the poll numbers after tomorrow's debate. Wait until about Thursday or Friday, McCain could lose an additional 5 points and there is no way he will recover. Why? The economy will stay "south" through the election.

My sense is we are in for a DEPRESSION as bad as the one in 1929. How low could the DOW go?  My guess is it will bottom out around 875.  Thank you George W Bush, John McCain, Phil Gramm, Pathetic Palin, and all those no regulation republicans.
I am glad the Obama/Biden campaign is focused on the issues.  At least they are able to talk about the issues and solutions intelligently whil all McBush and Six Pack can do is throw slime.  They have no solutions.  In fact, perhaps together they have one brain.
Senator Obama must also be aware of the next ABC Style Debate on NBC which will be moderated by Tom Brokaw this Tuesday. If Senator Obama has been paying attention lately he will notice a strong Republican Bias coming from Tom Brokaw which can’t be denied.

He better come prepared because I have a strange feeling we are going to see another Gotcha Debate.

And if Obama sees Brokaw going down that road he needs to call him out on it fiercely and forcefully.
Health care is by no means the only thing JMc is out of touch with.
This is outrageous!  How can anyone honestly feel good about voting for the McCain ticket?  Are they not understanding the direct impact?  Help me understand how anyone can vote for this ticket!!
This is an issue where Obama should be pounding McCain.  Giving $5000 credit so people can purchase their own insurance;  where does the go, who gets rich...the insurance company!  Another republican idea which throws money at a problem instead of looking for the solution.

The issue is NOT people having insurance as much as insurance companies not allowing necessary medicines and necessary care.  Insurance companies are calling the shots not the doctors.  Why give insurance companies more money...unless you have insurance lobbiest in your pocket?
Definitely showing that they can MULTI-TASK, Strike back on the BS and hit them with real issues all at the same time.  Gee if McCain or Palin could carry a theme for more than one day maybe they could work up to this level of organization by the next election (you know Johnny Mac will be back after all he HAS to be president).
see now its Medicare and Medicaid next it will be Social Security, remember he said it was on the table!! can we believe he would increase SS benifets, remember he is for a smaller government. there is nothen left to cut from welfare, and we know he will increase military spending, so the only thing he can do is cut Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid.
its reagen all over again!!!
Even the fact checkers say this is true...just more of the same polices we have lived thru for the past 8 years.. Enough Is Enough
McCain wants to cut these programs to "keep his plan budget-neutral"? What does that mean?  And why is it OK to cut these necessary health care plans while giving big oil tax breaks?

My husband and I have parents who rely on these programs.  I definitely do not want to see the benefits cut, especially at a time when their retirement accounts are taking a beating due to the falling stock market!!

McCain/Palin are out of touch with real Americans!

Vote Obama/Biden!
Obama continues to focus on our problems (economy, jobs, healthcare, and retirement savings).

McCain/Palin's plan...sling mud in every direction.
That's the ticket Obama. Repsond to the Palin / McCain attacks by slamming McCain on the issues. How McCain wants to pivatize Social Security (great idea whenthe private market is failing), and how his Health Care plan will hurt seniors as well as knock thousands of Americans off of their currnet health care plans, etc. etc.
Cut funding for MEDICARE and MEDICAID, what does he care?!, he's got his covered, on all fronts!

His "Socialized military benefits" and/or the Beer Baroness directly, fund his medical care.

McBush, give the people a clear look at your medical history (mental/PTSD), if you want to proudly wear the POW/HERO title.  McBush only gave a select few a cursury look at a few redacted pages of the medical record (no cameras, no notes to be taken). Be proud to show how you have suffered physically and MENTALLY.
And, while you're at it McBush, let's have a good look at that military record, which you also will not fully release!  Shades of your mentor, W.

MSNBC, keep the pressure on them both!

McBush/Palin make my head hurt!!!!!
John McCain: "The economy is fundamentally sound . . ."

The stock market took a major hit today . . . AGAIN.

And McCain wants to make it even harder for people to "buy" health insurance and cut medicare/medicaid. They can't even afford to keep their houses! Pay for gas! Pay for heating fuel! Buy groceries! Send their kids to college!

McCain is out to lunch and his VP is serving up baloney!
Media - do your JOB!  We demand to know all the FACTS/TRUTH about obama and his radical "friends" GOV Palin - keep up the good work - we need to know before it's too late to save our country.

VOTE McCain/Palin - we can TRUST them.
Both of my parents are currently dependent on Medicare and Medicaid (we're not rich like the McCains), and I'm 10 years away from going on Medicare myself, so I understand what a HUGE ISSUE reducing the already meager coverage would be to most Americans (those of us in the bottom 95%). Just because John McCain doesn't have to worry about HIS family's health insurance doesn't mean there aren't a whole lotta Americans who worry about theirs.

McCain's healthcare plan is bad enough, but Mr Straight Talk couldn't even tell us this was how he was going to pay for it, we had to find out via the fact checkers. Although, to be fair, he's said for years that he wants to reduce the "entitlements," so I shouldn't be surprised. Clearly he's never met anyone who depends on these programs to live; either that or he's a heartless b-----d (take your pick).
I hope those who read this will send it to everyone they know that is trying to exist on medicare payments.
I work for a company that provides wonderful services to those on Medicaid... mostly children.  We are financially hurting right now and can't imagine what would happen to services if McCain's health plan ever came to fruition.   Not to mention the over 5000 jobs that this would impact as well.
Obama is a FRAUD - the DNC picked this guy and pushed him thru.  Both Bill & Hillary Clinton tried to tell us the Truth - but were called Racist.
We need the Truth!
McPain is at it again.   When is the reality check going to come?  He's clueless, reckless and stupid.

I see a landslide coming!

These proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid in John McCain's health plan are very serious. They would affect so many millions of the most vulnerable Americans. My mother had to go onto Medicaid in her last years, and it was a Godsend. It is unconscionable that John McCain would "balance" his health care plan on this. Please, fellow voters, take these things into account when you're deciding who to support for President. These issues really matter.
His health care plan is like a swindle and then to add injury to pain he'll trash social security.  Also, McCain wasn't very specific about cuts and delays due the economic slide we're in...I wouldn't bet against this very same bad health care plan.  What luck!  He wouldn't have to deal with its' failure.  I'm a recently reformed republican and vet nearing retirement and I'm voting for Obama and if you aren't making over $130,000. a year and haven't got a good chunk put away you're nuts to vote McCain.
Good call. Stay focused on the issues that matter to voters.

In the first place, McCain campaign do not want to provide us healthcare. On top of it, they want to tax my employer paid health benefit. This is getting ridiculous.
Why is no one pointing out a big danger in McCain's health care plan? That is, if people like me (who have diabetes and high blood pressure) are given $5,000 to go out and find their own insurance plan, they will either be outright denied, and thus left without insurance coverage at all, or can only use the $5,000 as a down payment on a $20,000 to $30,000 insurance plan.

This would play right into the insurance companies' hands so that they could choose to provide coverage only to the people with the least risk.
I think the government should look into 'double dipping'.  How is it a man who is a Senator, and draws a good salary, also receives retirement benefits from the US Navy, and Social Security?  Not to speak of his retirement benefits when he is not re-elected.

I would like to see Social Security go back to it's origination - to help people in low income jobs, who couldn't put money away for retirement, actually be able to quit working in their golden years!

I have an Aunt & Uncle whose yearly earnings from their farm are in the $200,000 to $400,000 range, yet they both draw full social security.  They don't need it, but they take it...

I read today on one of the financial websites that 1% of Taxpayers earn 23% of the income - the last time that happened was 1929, and we know what happened then...

Capitalism is great when it works - but it needs regulation...  There should be caps...
I was wondering when Obama would bring this up. Cutting medicare and medicaid will work real well in fl and pa. Way to go McCain. Not. I mean does the McCain camp think or just come up with nonsense to say that they have an idea. How is cutting medicare and medicaid helping the middle class? It does not make sense. This is the worst run campaingn I ever seen.
Perfect timing McCain--kick us while we're down.  My 401K has tanked and now I can look forward to cuts to my medicare benefits.  You are HEARTLESS!!!
Yes, well this will be front and center in the debate, along with the fact McCain is taxing our employer provided healthcare.
Time to throw the crooks and criminals out.  Take your Barbie doll collection and go on another one of your Keating 5 financed vacations McCain, this is no country for old men and no time for your slimy politics.
it's amazing multi-task.. obama hits mcain back with keating 5 post a video, focuses on the econmy and blast mcain on a real issue health care. all in a day's work. let me think mcain would need to suspend his campaign then respond then punder then lie, then changes the subject off the economy...well that takes care of week 1...you get the point mcain more of the same and pretty darn inefficient....
I can hardly wait to watch KO and RM tonight.  They have enough to lay into McCain for 4 hours.
i swear mccain's trying to alienate every voting base he has left.
But Palin can use her Maverick super powers to keep us all healthy, can't she? So we won't need dog gone health insurance, ya got that, ya?
John McCain "DUTY HONOR COUNTRY " will you be proud
of yourself after this campaign?
Keep going Obama team.  You have to be diligent on attacking every bad plan they are putting out to America.  John McCain and Sarah Palin think we are stupid.  It is so insulting.  And no Sarah, here in the Mid-west we do know how to speak proper English.
Are you going to loose on Nov 4th----you betcha!!!

Obama/Smokin Joe 08
How does Obama plan to provide all the services he is proposing?  By RAISING TAXES.  the government can NOT be everything for evrybody.  I have worked my entire adult life - currently 55 - and I don't see how I will ever be able to retire if I have to continue working just to pay my tax bill.
Oh Neo-Con McShame, grandma just found out that there is no shame to you game.  The dogs just ran out the house and the cat's ran underneath the bed.  Old McShame, when grandma ain't happy, there is no-body happy.  Old grandpa just went outside to pick the last of the choke-cherries......grandma just said she hopes you jump on your bike and the seat falls off.....I better go help grandpa.........LOL......
To "cut Medicare and Medicaid funding by $1.3 trillion dollars over the next decade"...looks like McCain will keep the good old "don't get sick" healthcare plan breathing at our lungs' expense.
Let's be pro- active this time. Call NBC and tell them we want a fair debate. We won't accept a replay of George Stupidopolos and Charlie does not get it Gibson.
It is questionable to be attacking Obama solely on who he knows.  What the Obama campaign is doing is good that is is talking about policies and plans for the future.  I like to see that.
To guess what moderator.................

Tom Brokaw along with JMc....are cranky old guys who have the obvious mentality that Obama's Campaign could not miss. I feel certain that BO will be equal to debating both of them if necessary. This will not be the finest hour for either of them and they should have hung it up when they were at the top of their game.
I'm just so tired of the Obama fanatics tell us what we can, and what we can't talk about. Listen Obamanuts, the press did absolutely nothing to vet out Obama and his shady past. That leaves it to the candidates to take it upon themselves to do the job. Obama is a product from the Chicago Machine, the most corrupt bunch of pols this country has ever seen. There is a lot of dirt on this Obama character that the press refuses to talk about because they're too busy trying to (unsuccessfully) find stuff on Palin. So quit your whining and for once listen, you might learn something.

Well you seem to know since you fancy yourself such a smart guy. Please enlighten us? Tell us all about the dirt you have uncovered on Obama. Please tell us about all the awful things and fill us in on where you got your facts.
Why don't you shut up and learn something yourself Chad? Why don't we talk policy? You start. Lay out for me why you support McCain's economic plan for America. Tell me what you like about his foriegn and domestic policies. In fact why cant just one of you ignorant, sarcastic right wingers talk civics just one freakin' time? You blah blah blah all day long about gotcha national enquirer bull s**t. You rattle off sarcastic little one liners with no substance. You guys never ever state one thing about McCain's vision for America's future that you support. Have any one of you actually read his economic and domestic proposals if he were to be President? I have several times and I would be happy to have the conversation with you Chad. You, full moon, Ken and anybody else who wants to join in. Let's start a discussion.

So I'll ask again. Let's start with the economy. The ball is in your court.
