NBC/WSJ poll: Obama increases lead

From NBC's Mark Murray
Fueled in part by the candidates' responses to the current economic crisis -- as well as their performances at the first debates -- Obama has increased his national lead over McCain, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Obama is ahead of McCain by six points, 49-43 percent, which equals his biggest lead in this poll. Two weeks ago, the Democratic nominee held a two-point advantage over his Republican counterpart, 48-46 percent.

Voters, the survey finds, believe Obama responded to the crisis more effectively than McCain did. Thirty-four percent say they felt more reassured by Obama's approach, versus 29 percent who said they felt less reassured. That's compared with just 25 percent who were reassured by McCain's response, versus 38 percent who were less reassured.

The poll also comes after the first presidential and vice-presidential debates. While analysts and pundits might disagree over the performances, the survey finds that there was a clear winner among voters: Obama-Biden. By a 50-29 percent margin, respondents say Obama and Biden bested their GOP opponents at the debates.

In particular, Biden saw his poll numbers rise after his debate against Alaska Palin. Two weeks ago, 64 percent said that the Delaware senator was qualified to be president if the need arises. The number has now jumped to 74 percent. By comparison, just 41 believe that Palin is qualified to be president, which is virtually unchanged from the last survey.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this election really is not going to be close.

"just 41% believe that Palin is qualified to be president, which is virtually unchanged from the last survey."

What is surprising is that even that many think she has what it takes to do the job.

In particular, Biden saw his poll numbers rise after his debate against Alaska Palin.

My my, what an interesting name; "Alaska Palin".  :)

And McCain sank today in state polls. Obama got his biggest leads yet in North Carolina (+6%) and Virginia (+12%). He is also ahead by 7% in Florida and by 6% in Colorado. Full roundup: http://campaigndiaries.com/2008/10/06/gop-sinks-in-coastal-south/
If only Obama had agreed to a dozen town hall meetings with McCain ........
Count me as one of those independents who have changed their mind about McCain. I used to like him and planned to vote for him. No more. He has proven himself to be erratic and downright scary at times in his behavior, most notably his antics of the past two weeks -- the quasi suspension of his campaign, his not looking at Obama during the debate and the infamous cold handshake with Obama at the floor of the senate. Meanwhile, Obama has been calm and composed under much pressure - that's the kind of president I want and this country needs!
Obama will be our next president. What a relief!
McCain is fundamentally wrong!!

Sarah, stop being a winking, lipstick smiling, cheesecake. If you must be so defiant attacking Obama with Ayers et al, the fact that the economic is in turmoil; demands old certainties and prejudices will reverse those trends. Republicans like you using Ayers, Rev Wright, Acorn, is nothing more than a CLANDESTINE WILLIE HORTON ATTACK. Take a gander at the newspapers. It’s the economy; stupid girl. Also a gander in a US history book while you’re at it will show you a Doug Wilder effect. We (the people) are not ignoramUS.

McCain/ Palin are equivalent to X (xy) =>0.

No way
No how
No McCain/ Palin
Nobody but Obama/Biden

YES WE CAN!!! If McCain thinks increasing the negativity and standing by while his supporters call Obama a terrorist will get him elected, I have a bridge to nowhere to sell him in Alaska!!!
McCain and Palin are the real RADICALS and TERRORISTS and we voters are saying no to Senator ERRATIC and Governor CLUELESS aka THE DUMB & DUMBER tag team.
(MSNBC make sure you post this; you are always refusing to post my comments)!!
Many of us regular people never understood why the pundits thought Palin did well in the debate.  She never answered the questions--that was the point of a debate.  Anyone who took high school debate knew she would have failed miserably.
I can't wait for the Republican comments on this board how you, Chuck, are being biased for reporting that a poll came out with Obama on top.
Nice poll numbers and what an electoral map advantage going into the debate! Do you think McCain will look at Obama tomorrow night??? Obama will be smooth, steady and stately. McCain... well, I only hope he gets cranky, mean and even more erratic.
Victory is at the doorstep but don't ever underestimate your opponent.  That never works out well.

Palin has zero credibility.  How about the fact that she sleeps with somone who wnats to devide the country.  McCain will get crucified by this at the debate.
These Bush/McCain/Rove tactics make me sick. It looks like the American people are sick of it too.
McLame,
Keep up the the smear attacks!!! It looks like it is really working for you!! Or should I say, The rest of us!
Go Obama!
A 45 minute survey read verbatim in a monolougue during dinnertime.

The Do Not Call List does not apply to political polling, after all politicans made the law.
As the Great Jackie Gleason used to say: "HOW SWEET IT IS!!""

--Nothing, repeat, NOTHING that those two corrupt fools do or say will keep people from doing the right thing this time.

How dare that woman falsely attack Obama when she is currently ignoring a subpeona!?!?!?  How many average hockey moms or "joe six packs" get to ignore subpeonas without landing in jail??  Dontcha know(wink, wink)

Obama has probably raised a million bucks today alone in response to her mouth!!

No surprise there.  McCain has no plans to talk about or analyze.  You might as well have the election today and get it over with.  It’s Obama / Bidden.

No puedo esperar para ver la fusión de McCain mañana por la noche. Él miraba como él iba a soplar un fusible en las entrevistas hoy en la televisión. Un qué hombre feo - adentro y hacia fuera.
The American people see through the McNasty and the first American Idol VP candidate and give debate victories to Obama and Biden. Good for them. Instead of picking someone because they're attractive or "seem like me" the people chose (at least in this poll) the more competent, experienced, and knowledgable candidates. Maybe we've learned our lesson after W.
I'm not sure how anyone can think that Palin is ready to be president. McCain must think we're stupid.

Governor Palin, we know Hillary Clinton and you are no Hillary Clinton!

Please return to Alaska.
I have always giving the Republican party credit for (right or wrong) knowing how to run a campaign and how to steal an election. I have also (but was not going to vote for him)recognized John McCain as a hero mainly because i lost two relatives and two best friends in the Viet Nam War. But after the smear campaign that they have recently started against Obama I take it back, and esp. for you McCain. I do not expect a hero to resort to these type of tactics and esp. with you tied to the Keating 5 and you were not 8 yeras old, get my meaning. And you empty Pale Palin do you really want to go there with associations after you delivered a speech at the successionist party get together in Alsaka and your husband Todd being a card carrying member, plus there is still that abuse of power thing you haven't explained and continue to cover up. Who is ever running your campaign so far is doing a cracker jack job for you.
What's to discuss?
Nice. Although, this is no time to let our guard down.  The scariest thing of all is the potential openings in the supreme court, and what a McCain administration could REALLY mean.
VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE VOTE... DON'T TAKE IT FOR GRANTED.

Boris and Natasha are trying to distract America. Don't let Dipstick/Lipstick change the subject. It's not about character -- IT IS ABOUT LOSING POLL NUMBERS. McCain has the snarky pitbull out doing his dirty work for him -- Palin's his kind of woman -- all lip, no real thoughts. When he wants her opinion, he gives it to her.

Let's NOT let the Republicans do what they did in 2000 and 2004. Sure, they are going to try to steal the election, but we can stop them.

YES, WE CAN!!!

Let's make it an Obama/Biden LANDSLIDE!
Confidence in Joe Biden?  I have one question about this man that so many Democrats "trust".  Why did he say in the primaries that Obama was "not ready to lead". He said it more than once...even when a follow-up question came to him to confirm it.  How do you say that with clarity one minute and campaign for the same guy the next?  How do you trust a person who self-contradicts himself like that?

Also, in the VP debate he defended Obama saying that Obama never said he'd meet with the dictator of Iran without pre-conditions.  Really?  Another contradiction or lie.... Mr. Biden himself criticized Mr. Obama on this point in 2007 at the National Press Club: "Would I make a blanket commitment to meet unconditionally with the leaders of each of those countries within the first year I was elected President? Absolutely, positively no."

This is the same Joe Biden busted on more than 1 occasion for plagiarism and lying about his grades.  The same Joe Biden who comes off as "Mr. regular guy" and yet whose mansion was secured due to his inside relationships with banking leaders and whose annual Am-trak expenses are way out of line when compared with other Delaware congressmen who take Am-Trak to Washington.

This is the same guy everyone trusts so much?
Things are beginning to look pretty grim for the McCain campaign.  The shift of the country's attention to the economy, a topic which traditionally favors Democrats, has clearly added momentum to Obama's success in the polls.  One area where McCain is still holding on is foreign policy -- specifically, his support of the troop surge and success it seems to have promoted in Iraq.  Obama is stuck in a bit of tight spot on this: refusing to acknowledge its success paints him as a defeatist, acknowledging plays to McCain's favor.  Nevertheless, I think there is a rebuttal that Obama can use that would nullify this advantage for McCain forever (and give Obama some great soundbites in the process).  Check out the article below for some ideas on this:

PLEASE COME SEE WHY, IF YOU LIVE IN S.W. FLORIDA. THERE WILL BE A COMMUNITY GATHERING WITH JOE BIDEN, THIS WEDNESDAY OCT. 8TH. AT FLORIDA GULF COAST UNIV., ESTERO, FL. 5:30 P.M., FOR MORE INFO. CALL 239-466-9900
It still saddens me that such a large number of people feel she is ready to be president. If John Sydney McCain III would release ALL of his medical records and we had them looked over by impartial professionals, then we would know exactly what the likelihood of having Sarah Palin take over is. It scares me that such an erratic man with such a radical woman at his side is still polling at over 40%. Some people in this country truly are not paying attention. But with only 29 days to go, I hope that reality slaps them in the face real soon.
BASCIALLY GETS DOWN TO THE WOMENS VOTE.  SEEMS LIKE THE FAR LEFT WOMEN HATE PALIN. OBAMA DOES PAL AROUND WITH TERROSISTS AND SHADY CHARACTER.  JUST BECAUSE SHE DOESNT OWN BLACK TOYS MAKES HER AN ENEMY TO ALL THAT DO. SICKOS
I am just an average guy, out of work with a good deal of time to spend online right now. I just can not believe how openly MSNBC and NBC in general are really out of touch with reality.

It seems to me that you are so pro Obama as to be laughable.  My feeling is that the common folk, like me are not going to vote for this guy for a number of reasons. Spending is a big one. (Bush was out of control but he is a piker in comparison to what Obama has in mind) What about the economy?  I know you point the blame toward the Bush policies but it seems to me it goes back to the Great Society (thats worked out nicely hasn't it), Carter with his only successful legislative action and Clinton with his subsequent action on Fanny Mae. Obama's crowd did nothing to slow it down or stop it, rather guys like Dodd, Schumer, Franks used the system to pound out more contributions, sweet realestate deals and generally act like mobsters.

How does the editorial board at NBC and MSNBC look in the mirror each day?   It's sad really. Scary and sad but we can all pray that regular guys like me are seeing past you propoganda and brain washing.  It's not wrong to be on the other side of any issue but you are not beings newsworthy, you are puppets to some lesser known master.
Way to go voters.
The republicans gave us no credit for intelligence
and continue with the swiftboating, dirty tactics.
We realize they have no accomplishments to run
on as they have almost destroyed our country.
Keep up the good work Barack/Joe.
ENOUGH!!

I watched Gov. Palin today, go on and on about Barack Obama. Then I went to my doctor's office and CNN (sorry) was on in the waiting room, and I see
Sen. McCain bouncing around at some rally, talking about...Barack Obama. These two, in front of two forums of voters, spent most of their time talking about...BARACK OBAMA. Sen. Clinton did that when she temporarily ran out of things to say.
OUT OF GAS, OUT OF IDEAS, NOTHING LEFT.
Look for the gap to widen as McCain continues his baseless campaign of lies, and after tomorrow night's debate.

Obama/Biden '08!

http://jawillie.blog.com
You know what..I am glad.  Obama is a good human being-I truly believe this with all my heart
John McCain is sounding more and more desperate everyday. In Florida this morning, Palin spoke about Ayers and not the economy. Does the GOP know that the market FELL again today? Who is running their campaign? Clueless people like Tucker Bounds?
Chuck Todd: you have GOT to be KIDDING.  Your "commentary" tonight on Hardball was a JOKE.   McCAin is being graded on a negative curve?  Palin is being graded on a negative curve?   Did you WATCH the Palin debate?  I thought I was watching Tucker Bounds.
I just read the article in Rolling Stone that will be published 10/16/2008.  It was very revealing regarding the true John McCain. Very good article. Shows how self serving the man really is! I can see it in his mannerism and hear it in his tone. My husband, who was undecided until this weekend on who to vote for, picked up on it also.  So now we are both Obama supporters.
Obama is winning! that's all I can say
Go Obama
I'm not surprised by any of these information. I live in NC and the Obama enthusiasm is amazing. He's bringing crowds of 15,000+. I'm sad to see John McCain doing some of the things he's doing. This is not the campaign he wanted to run and his campaign will do him in. He should have chosen Lieberman and tried to pull some Democrats his way. But, it's really over for him now. I'm ready for a change and I have faith in Obama's leadership. His campaign has been FLAWLESS and drama-free. McCain is flailing.
to the GOP trolls  take comfort in the fact that Obama is under 50% in this poll, unlike others polls.
and that he is leading by 6 instead of 7 or 8 which is customary. Calling a sitting US-senator terrorist makes you unpatriotic scum.
sarah, now look what you've done, he he he he he.

go home to Wasilla and roam around the woods in a wolf costume.
Ok world I apologize for voting republican and voting for Bush, twice…. I will not however be snowed under again. No more flag waving BS, no character assassinations, no swift boats, not this time. You went to those wells over and over and I am sick of it.

Besides I have actually read most of Lincolns’ speeches and writings and  I have to honestly admit that Oboma speaks and writes at the same level. Go ahead and say I drank the cool aid. In those days there was no shortage of mean and ignorant  folk who hated Lincoln as well Just as many died hating FDR.

I haven’t drank any cool aid, I can think for myself while you ,my past friend are lost in the hate and fear of your own stupidity.  Stay as bigot if you must but be brave enough to say so.

Here is how I see it…

McCain, a bad drunk and lousy pilot. A coward in Vietnam, a fool and pet to Keating, throughout his life a below grade mind. Traitor to his wife and family, lousy husband, lousy father, lousy senator and now lastly a traitor to America in service to his ambition.

Palin, a fool and generic dirtball politician, tax cheat, vindictive and mean in every way. On the run from her own Alaska government subpoenas….

To those of you who can actually go out day after day repeating the lies on TV and in public, well you are lower then the two political hacks you work for. You are stupid and easily bought.

To the press allowing lie after lie to be repeated without challenge, to give lie after lie airtime, you are worse cowards then the creeps working for McCain Palin. You claim principles but have none. You are lost, sold to corporate entities and shill for them like a bunch of Nazi propagandists

Women love her? Well check out this site. 170k female citizens and what they think of her…

Loved in Alaska? Read this…

McCain a hero? A great man? Educate yourself and read this…

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/make_believe_maverick_the_real_john_mccain

I will not know for years if Obama is a great man or what he will or can do, helps us. But I am old enough to know that going with another mean, unprincipled greedy old politician is just doing the same thing over again. Not this time, no way, no how.

Signed,

An ex republican, a citizen
If Senator McCain picked Palin as his VP, who would he pick for Secretary of State... Larry the Cable Guy?
After reviewing the data in your NBC News/WSJ Survey,

Obama/Biden lead McCain/Palin by 47% to 42% in their quest for the Presidency.

This is not at all surprising, since of the 658 people polled on 10/4-5/08 ----------------

44% were either Democrats, or Democratically leaning
   Independents
   VS
36% Republicans and Republican leaning Independents.

If you have more Democrats being polled, Obama will
win just about every time.

GREAT!

I hope that McCains numbers drop through the floor with his latest attacks!

I guess if you don't have any solutions (that anyone is buying), you do anything you can to try and win.   Country first???   Looks like McCain first to me!!

Makes me sick!
It's not surprising Barack Obama is pulling
ahead in the polls. John McCain looks like he
has NO CLUE about anything right now. Obama
looks like the experienced one and McCain is
 looking like a political novice.
Obama is ahead and he will stay that way. The sleaze coming out of the McCain campaign is ugly and dirty. And contrary to what Peggy Noonan says it does matter. When this kind of dirt comes from the second on the list it speaks of the entire ticket.
